Waiting on Wednesday...Until I Die

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Until I Die by Amy Plum

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Kate and Vincent have overcome the odds and at last they are together in Paris, the city of lights and love.
As their romance deepens there’s one question they can’t ignore: How are they supposed to be together if Vincent can’t resist sacrificing himself to save others? Although Vincent promises that he’ll do whatever it takes to lead a normal life with Kate, will that mean letting innocent people die? When a new and surprising enemy reveals itself, Kate realizes that even more may be at stake—and that Vincent’s immortality is in jeopardy.
In Die for Me, Amy Plum created a captivating paranormal mythology with immortal revenants and a lush Paris setting. Until I Die is poised to thrill readers with more heart-pounding suspense, spellbinding romance, and a cliff-hanger ending that will leave them desperate for the third and final novel in the series.

I LOVED Die For Me. I am super excited to continue Kate and Vincent's story. Such a romantic setting, and this sounds like it'll have some great action too.

Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Everneath by Brodi Ashton
Release Date – January 24, 2012

My Rating- 8/10
**Obtained from the fantastic Christy**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.

She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...
I love Greek mythology. I especially love the tale of Hades and Persephone. This twist on that tale is well written, and intriguing. The mythology built in this novel may be based on old tales, but Brodi Ashton puts her own unique twist on it, and it’s captivating.

I loved that Brodi Ashton wasted no time jumping into the story. There was no build up to when the story started and it really worked in this case. I was fully immersed in the story right from the first few pages. I felt without the build up Brodi was able to focus on the plot and just get into the heart of the story.

Nikki is not just going to sit there and go quietly back to the Everneath when her 6 months is up. She fights, and actually does something about it. She could complain and just be miserable, but she fights. It was great to see. Nikki is actually a pretty great character. My only complaint is that she never took the time to ask or listen to others. She sees something, or hears something and jumps to conclusions and acts on the information. I get that she was hurting, but a lot of the issues she is currently facing are because she acted rashly.

Jack…sigh. Jack is one of the most perfect YA guys ever. Supportive, understanding, and forgiving. He is there for Nikki in every way that she needs him to be. He doesn’t react badly to any of the craziness going on. Their relationship was pretty touching, and sweet. You can’t help but want them together. He is totally a guy worth fighting for.

I wanted to like Cole. I always love the bad boy. I wanted to root for him as well as Jack. I mean obviously he was going to be sexy and he can play the guitar. Sadly, Jack stole the show. I think it’s because I am not sure where Cole really stands when it comes to Nikki. I never could tell if he wanted her or was just using her. I am hoping book two clears this up because I am fully supportive of crushing on the bad boy.

As this is book one in a series I was expecting a cliffhanger of some sort. I got one that made me scream, and immediately want to grab for the second book. I am looking forward to see what comes next for Nikki, Jack and Cole, and I just hope the wait doesn't feel like 100 years.

In My Mailbox

This is a weekly meme hosted by the awesome Kristi at The Story Siren. It gives us a chance to showcase the books we got during the week.

The amazing Christy sent me a package that I got this week. It featured two books I was dying to read. Thank you so much Christy!

Everneath by Brodi Ashton (goodreads)*
Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver (goodreads)

*Everneath is not pictured as I left it at my sister's house. I already read it, and the review will be going up on Monday. I am pretty much almost done Pandemonium as well and words can not describe how awesome it is.

I received one egalley this week:

When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle (goodreads)

This is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet but with a twist. It sounds really good though. *not pictured as it does not have a cover yet

I won a novel from RandomHouse:

Fallen in Love by Lauren Kate (goodreads)

I am excited to hear about the other characters in this story. Roland and Arriane's stories especially intrigue me.

Lastly I purchased one novel this week:

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey (goodreads).

This hardcover was on sale for $4.99 at my local Chapters, so I had to grab it! I've heard wonderful things about it and can't wait to read it.

Happy reading everyone!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

Born Wicked

I just finished reading this and the only word that comes to mind is  - WOW! This book has me dying for book two and I can't wait to share my review. You'll want to pick this one up when it's released in February.

TV

Ferris Bueller 2012

I LOVE Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's one of my go to movies when I am sick and don't want to get out ofbed. I literally squealed when I saw this preview for a TV commercial (YES, a preview for a commercial) that shows Matthew Broderick saying a twist on one of  his iconic lines from the movie which is followed by the even more iconic music. The full ad will air during the SuperBowl and is apparently for Honda.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Ok, my nostalgia factor is high today. I spent the day watching Buffy videos on Youtube and especially videos of the musical episode. Also, let's not forget the mostly SILENT episode that still gives me chills. It reminded me of how amazing, ground breaking, and well written it was. Joss Whedon is nothing short of genius and Sarah Michelle Gellar remains my idol and girl crush.

If you haven't watched Buffy ever, PLEASE do. You are missing out on one of the greatest TV shows EVER! Season 2 is my favourite - heartbreaking, romantic, and filled with jaw droppings twists.

And I've just made myself want to watch the entire series AGAIN...

My Blogiversary

This happens to be today! My little blog is a whole year old. It feels like I just started (but some days it really does feel like I've been a blogger for years). I am having a little giveaway to celebrate, and I just wanted to thank you all again for following, and basically being awesome.

A special shout out to Brodie, Christy, Kelly, and Evie for being amazing and so welcoming in my first year.

Friday Hops!

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q: Which book genre do you avoid at all costs and why?

I tend to avoid science fiction (more so aliens, etc). I just don't really have an interest. I have read the odd ScFi book that I enjoyed, but otherwise it's not for me. Westerns is a genre I have the same issue with.

TGIF at GReads! is a weekly blog hop hosted by Ginger from GReads

Q: Where do your books that you read come from? The bookstore? The library? Do you prefer to own a book, or have it on loan?

I purchase books and also use the library heavily. I tend to purchase anything that I REALLY want and others I get from the library first and will purchase if it ends up being awesome. I love that the library gives you chance to try so many different genres, and go a little out of your comfort zone.

Happy weekend and Happy reading!

Waiting on Wednesday...Dreamless

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Dreamless by Josephine Angelini

*SPOILERS FOR STARCROSSED! Go read that first!*

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
As the only Scion that can enter Hades at will, Helen descends to the Underworld in search of a way to overcome the Furies and end the cycle of revenge that has cursed the Scions. But she’s running out of time. Each descent weakens her both in mind and spirit. A mysterious stranger might be her only salvation, but the price may be her love for Lucas Delos.
As an unforgettable love triangle emerges, Josephine Angelini’s compelling saga becomes ever more intricate and spellbinding. The eagerly awaited sequel to the internationally bestselling Starcrossed, Dreamless delivers with a huge emotional impact that will leave readers satisfied—and longing for more.

I really enjoyed Starcrossed and am looking forward to reading more about Lucas and Helen. Love triangle huh? Well, he'll have to be pretty awesome to compare to Lucas.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Dr. Luke Findley is on the midnight shift in the emergency room when the police bring in a young woman. Few strangers come to this remote town in northernmost Maine in the winter, and this stranger is accused of a bizarre crime: killing a man and leaving his body in the Great North Woods. The young woman, Lanny, tells the doctor that she and the man in the woods lived in this town at its founding two hundred years ago, until fate sentenced them to an eternity of unhappiness until they atone for their sins.

The man in the woods is Jonathan, son of the town's founder, and the love of Lanny's life. After Lanny commits a terrible sin in the hope of claiming Jonathan for her own, she's banished from town and sent to Boston to serve her penance. In Boston, she falls in with a beguiling yet frightening man, Adair, who has otherworldly powers, including the ability to confer immortality. His world is one of unknown sensual pleasures and seemingly limitless power, but at what price?

Adair wants to add Jonathan to the collection of treacherous courtiers who do his bidding (but for unknown ends) and sends Lanny back to Maine to collect him. It seems like the answer to Lanny's deepest desire—to be with Jonathan forever—but once Jonathan has joined Adair's pack of immortals, she sees that Adair is not what he seems and his intentions toward Jonathan are far worse than she imagined. And now it is up to her to save her beloved—and herself—from a terrible fate designed to last for all eternity.

The Taker is a story of the power of love to corrupt, to drive us to do terrible things in its name, and the courage it takes to sacrifice in the name of love and ultimately be worthy of absolution.
The Taker is unlike anything I’ve read recently. A intriguing read filled with love, sex, greed, and betrayal. It offers the reader a glimpse at what love can do, and how it can even destroy.

The writing is quite well done. The pace is great, and it does keep your interest. The talent is evident in with this being her first novel.

The Taker really is the story of Lanny, and her life. As I was reading it almost felt like she was telling Luke her life story, the way you would if you were going to pass away. I often felt sorry for her. She was in love with a man who while he loved her in return, could never fully commit to her. She was tortured physically, emotionally, and often berated herself for things she did. Her quest to be absolved of her sins (real and imagined) was heartbreaking, because she truly seemed like someone caught up in circumstances she didn’t really understand. A lot of what she did was out of love for Jonathan and to protect (and possess) him.

Adair is the type of villain that chills your blood. The constant tip toeing around him, and treacherous court like atmosphere made you fear for everyone. He was not above killing when he was angry and staying in his good graces was not easy.

Jonathan, a man so beautiful he would captivate anyone, sadly did not have much else to make me like him. He was fickle, often infuriatingly selfish, and Lanny’s love for him was truly heartbreaking. Love can drive you to extremes, and when given and taken away at whim can drive a person mad. Jonathan never really commits to anyone, and Lanny’s unflinching love for him was one of the few good things about him.

This novel explores decadence, and debauchery. There is talk of sex, drugs, intimate parties with exclusive guest lists, and even sexual torture. It may shock some, and this is most certainly a novel for adults. The way love and sex were often used as a means to torture, to me, almost represented the power of love. It can heal, and destroy in equal measure; both are represented here.

The ending was abrupt. This is book one of a trilogy and I was expecting a cliffhanger, but this left me turning the last page looking for more.  I am curious to see where the author will take this story.

This is a hard book for me to sum up. I was left with an over all feeling of wanting more. The writing talent was there, and it might have been that the characters were ones I could not really connect to. The story itself is interesting, and well developed however, and that was enough to keep my interest.

Book Boyfriends!

It's time for another post highlighting some of those delicious boys in books that make us swoon. Here are six that I am swooning over now.

Noah Shaw

Where you can find him - The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Why he is swoon worthy - His British accent comes to mind. Oh, and the fact that he's gorgeous, has a 'bad boy' attitude, and enough charm to captivate ANYONE.

Favourite Quote -

“What would you do if I kissed you right now?"

I stared at his beautiful face and his beautiful mouth and I wanted nothing more than to taste it. "I would kiss you back.”

Cricket Bell

Where you can find him - Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

Why he is swoon worthy - He's sweet, caring, and adorakably cute. He's the type of guy that will give his girl the stars and the moon. His willingness to wait for Lola makes everyone swoon.

Favourite Quote -

“Once upon a time, there was a girl who talked to the moon. And she was mysterious and she was perfect, in that way that girls who talk to moons are. In the house next door, there lived a boy. And the boy watched the girl grow more and more perfect, more and more beautiful with each passing year. He watched her watch the moon. And he began to wonder if the moon would help him unravel the mystery of the beautiful girl. So the boy looked into the sky. But he couldn't concentrate on the moon. He was too distracted by the stars. And it didn't matter how many songs or poems had already been written about them, because whenever he thought about the girl, the stars shone brighter. As if she were the one keeping them illuminated.

One day, the boy had to move away. He couldn't bring the girl with him, so he brought the stars. When he'd look out his window at night, he would start with one. One star. And the boy would make a wish on it, and the wish would be her name.

At the sound of her name, a second star would appear. And then he'd wish her name again, and the stars would double into four. And four became eight, and eight became sixteen, and so on, in the greatest mathematical equation the universe had ever seen. And by the time an hour had passed, the sky would be filled with so many stars that it would wake the neighbors. People wondered who'd turned on the floodlights.

The boy did. By thinking about the girl.”

Four

Where you can find him - Divergent by Veronica Roth

Why he is swoon worthy - A little rough and capable of taking care of himself. The hottest thing about him is that he doesn't handle Tris with kid gloves. He wants to push her and have her take care of herself, yet he can be protective too.

Favourite Quote -

"My first instinct is to push you until you break, just to see how hard I have to press." he says, his fingers squeezing at the word break. My body tenses at the edge in his voice, so I am coiled as tight as a spring, and I forget to breathe.

His dark eyes lifting to mine, he adds, "But I resist it."

"Why..." I swallow hard. "Why is that your first instinct?"

"Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up. I've seen it. It's fascinating." He releases me but doesn't pull away, his hand grazing my jaw, my neck. "Sometimes I just want to see it again. Want to see you awake.”

Vincent Delacroix

Where you can find him - Die For Me by Amy Plum

Why he is swoon worthy - He speaks French. Enough said right? If that didn't tempt you he also happens to be incredibly romantic, and protective.

Favourite Quote-

“I have to warn you that my bedroom isn't the best place to stage an assault on me. It's where I'm at my weakest, with my bed a mere twenty feet away.”

Bram Griswold

Where you can find him - Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel

Why he is swoon worthy - He's a true gentleman, and happens to be a soldier too! He's caring, patient and incredibly sweet with Nora.

Favourite Quote-

"The fact that she made this beeline for me both warmed my soul and made me want to turn around, walk out the door, and find a cliff to fling myself off of.”

Etienne St Clair

Where you can find him - Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Why he is swoon worthy - His sense of humour, the accent, his ability to be both adorable and frustrating at the same time. There's also his willingness to overcome his fears for the one he loves.

Favourite Quote -

“I'm a little distracted by this English French American Boy Masterpiece.”  *Ok, so he doesn't say it, but it's about him.*

I am looking forward to meeting a whole new batch of sexy book hotties with the 2012 releases, and meeting back up with some favourites as well.

Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

Stacey Jay's awesome news

I may have mentioned how excited I am about fairytales. Once Upon A Time, Cinder, and other amazing retellings are bringing them back in a major way. Imagine my excitement when I read this on Stacey Jay's blog
"Stacey Jay's futuristic retelling of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, to Michelle Poploff at Delacorte, in a very nice deal, in a two-book deal, by Ginger Clark at Curtis Brown."
Stacey goes on to give some more details, and this sounds awesome. I enjoyed Juliet Immortal so I am curious to see what she will do with Beauty and the Beast. She also teased us with a news of a Romeo Redeemed cover (she calls it YUMMY). VERY EXCITED!

TV

Vampire Diaries

This photo makes me all kinds of happy. I love Stefan and Elena together, and this season has been rough. This looks like a step in the right direction though and I am dying to see the episode this comes from.

Revenge

I've loved this show since the beginning, but I am swooning over this weeks episode where the adorable Daniel proposes to our devious (and slightly crazy) heroine Emily (err...Amanda). It was a sweet proposal with the rain and sweet words and all. I also LOVE Nolan. His snark is amazing. If you haven't checked out this fun, deliciously soapy show you really should!

Friday Hops!

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q: What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get your hands on any particular book?

I guess going to the midnight release party for Harry Potter. Nothing like being surrounded by a huge group of people who are just as excited as you are. You go home and stay up all night reading...I miss Harry!

TGIF at GReads! is a weekly blog hop hosted by Ginger from GReads

Q: Which book from the last 10 you've read would you recommend to a friend?

Hmm...I had it narrowed down to 2 books. This Dark Endeavour by Kenneth Oppel or Gilt by Katherine Longshore. I loved both of them for different reasons.

Happy weekend and Happy reading!

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Can there truly be love after death?

Drifting in the dark waters of a mysterious river, the only thing Amelia knows for sure is that she's dead. With no recollection of her past life—or her actual death—she's trapped alone in a nightmarish existence. All of this changes when she tries to rescue a boy, Joshua, from drowning in her river. As a ghost, she can do nothing but will him to live. Yet in an unforgettable moment of connection, she helps him survive.

Amelia and Joshua grow ever closer as they begin to uncover the strange circumstances of her death and the secrets of the dark river that held her captive for so long. But even while they struggle to keep their bond hidden from the living world, a frightening spirit named Eli is doing everything in his power to destroy their newfound happiness and drag Amelia back into the ghost world . . . forever.

Thrilling and evocative, with moments of pure pleasure, Hereafter is a sensation you won't want to miss.
We meet Amelia as she is reliving her death. Her drowning in a river is chillingly described.. It’s horrifying, intense and immediately draws you into the story. Hereafter keeps you drawn in and makes you fall for it’s heroine.

The writing’s pace was maybe a little on the slower side, but the story and characters kept my interest. The characters are what really stand out in the novel, especially Amelia.

Amelia, the ghost who just wants answers, won me over almost immediately.  She doesn’t remember much of her life or death. She’s protective of those she loves, forgiving, and determined. She really struggles with who she was, who she currently is as a ghost and what that means for her future. Most teenagers (and former teenagers) can relate to this. When you hit that cusp of adulthood you really do start to think about what you were like, who you are now, and what you want to be in the future. Amelia’s worries are of a most spooky variety as she wonders what her ghost nature is and what she is meant to be doing.

Joshua..swoon! He is up there on my book boyfriend list. He is really sweet. His connection with Amelia is  a little quick, it’s more of a bond made during intense circumstances so I was ok with it. It grows into more, and you really want them to be together. The actual heat and sparks between them is deliciously sexy.

Eli is another ghost who is determined to have Amelia for himself. He's super possessive, and does not care what he has to do in order to make Amelia his. He is so wonderfully complex. Usually villains of this nature tend to be very one dimensional but Eli is anything but usual. He is evil, but there is a sadness there. Underneath it all he has his own twisted reasons for doing everything,. At times you (and Amelia) start to feel a little sorry for him…right up until he does something awful again.

Those who scream at cliffhanger endings will be happy to know that while Tara leaves enough plot unresolved to make you want to grab for the sequel the ending provides enough resolution. It's an ending that while not suitable ending to Amelia and Joshua’s story is more than satisfying as an ending to part one of it.

Waiting on Wednesday...Kill Me Softly

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Mirabelle’s past is shrouded in secrecy, from her parents’ tragic deaths to her guardians’ half-truths about why she can’t return to her birthplace, Beau Rivage. Desperate to see the town, Mira runs away a week before her sixteenth birthday—and discovers a world she never could have imagined.
In Beau Rivage, nothing is what it seems—the strangely pale girl with a morbid interest in apples, the obnoxious playboy who’s a beast to everyone he meets, and the chivalrous guy who has a thing for damsels in distress. Here, fairy tales come to life, curses are awakened, and ancient stories are played out again and again.
But fairy tales aren’t pretty things, and they don’t always end in happily ever after. Mira has a role to play, a fairy-tale destiny to embrace or resist. As she struggles to take control of her fate, Mira is drawn into the lives of two brothers with fairy-tale curses of their own ... brothers who share a dark secret. And she’ll find that love, just like fairy tales, can have sharp edges and hidden thorns.
Fairy tales are the new hot thing, and I LOVE it. The references in the synopsis to so many fairy tales has me super excited. The cover is quite pretty as well. Why is it not April already?!

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
In search of adventure, twenty-nine-year-old Conor Grennan traded his day job for a year-long trip around the globe, a journey that began with a three-month stint volunteering at the Little Princes Children’s Home, an orphanage in war-torn Nepal. Conor was initially reluctant to volunteer, unsure whether he had the proper skill, or enough passion, to get involved in a developing country in the middle of a civil war. But he was soon overcome by the herd of rambunctious, resilient children who would challenge and reward him in a way that he had never imagined. When Conor learned the unthinkable truth about their situation, he was stunned: The children were not orphans at all. Child traffickers were promising families in remote villages to protect their children from the civil war—for a huge fee—by taking them to safety. They would then abandon the children far from home, in the chaos of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. For Conor, what began as a footloose adventure becomes a commitment to reunite the children he had grown to love with their families, but this would be no small task. He would risk his life on a journey through the legendary mountains of Nepal, facing the dangers of a bloody civil war and a debilitating injury. Waiting for Conor back in Kathmandu, and hopeful he would make it out before being trapped in by snow, was the woman who would eventually become his wife and share his life’s work. Little Princes is a true story of families and children, and what one person is capable of when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. At turns tragic, joyful, and hilarious, Little Princes is a testament to the power of faith and the ability of love to carry us beyond our wildest expectations.
This type of book is one that I might not have picked up on my own. It was a selection for my book club and it ended up really surprising me.

It’s the true story of a man who decided to take a year off  travelling the world. In order to make the year off sound more legitimate he was going to start off with a 3 month volunteer stint at an orphanage in Nepal. Once there he found himself touched by the sweet boys and girls who lived in the Little Princes Children’s Home, and came to find out the heart breaking truth - these children were not orphans after all. They had been taken by child traffickers who had promised the safety of these children to their parents for a fee. The reality was that these children were often abandoned in less than ideal lodgings and often were not taken care of properly.

Connor’s desire to help is really awe inspiring. It’s made all the more impressive by the fact that Connor admits his intention was to help find 7 particular children he felt he had failed. It was to ease his own guilt at first. This sums up Connor perfectly - honest, caring and relatable.  This story will undoubtedly cause comparisons to Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. I found Connor to be much more relatable than Greg. I feel that Connor provide much more personal details and that we sort of got to know him. I commend both guys for what they have done (and continue to do) but I found Connor to be more reliable and down to earth. There is something refreshing about the fact that Connor admits he did the volunteer part as he felt it would appear “exciting and impressive”.

This “memoir” even provided a little bit of romance as we see Connor fall in love with his now wife Liz via internet communication and visits. His descriptions of how he was feeling when they first met were adorable, and help relieve a bit of the tension and sadness from the rest of the book.

The novel ends up an hopeful note, but letting you know there is still much work to be done. The goal is to have these children rejoin their parents and become apart of their communities. The process is ongoing, and child trafficking continues to be an issue.

This novel opened my eyes to something I was otherwise unaware of. The story of these young children will surely touch your heart as well. If you wish to learn more about Connor Grennan and his charity you can visit the Next Generation Nepal website for more details.

Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine — despite the scans that showed significant brain damage. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she's far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can't control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it?
Then Delaney meets Troy Varga, who recently emerged from a coma with similar abilities. At first she's reassured to find someone who understands the strangeness of her new existence, but Delaney soon discovers that Troy's motives aren't quite what she thought. Is their gift a miracle, a freak of nature-or something much more frightening?
If you were given another chance at life what would you want to do with it? Would you waste it? Live life to the fullest? What about those who were suffering, would you want to help them? And if so how?

Megan Miranda has written a deeply thought provoking, well written, intense read. It was one of those books that was mysterious, and did not follow a predictable plot. It kept me guessing, and that is really refreshing.

Delaney was pretty much a mess. She’s died, been in a coma and is having to adjust all over again. She’s basically trying to keep her head above water when everyone and everything around her is trying to pull her back in. She has guilt for what her accident has done to her best friend and her parents who are literally falling apart. She can barely take time for herself to adjust because she’s too busy dealing with everyone else.

Decker is a character that I rooted for, even if I did want to punch him a lot of the time. He’s upset about his role in the accident, and carries a lot of guilt. The problem is that a lot of people don’t know how to interact with Delaney since the accident, and Decker is one of them. She needs him and he pushes away from her.

The reactions of her parents, Decker and others felt really real. How do you react to someone who has went through what Delaney went through, especially if you are feeling partly responsible?

Troy enters the picture and he’s mysterious, intense, and he can relate to Delaney. He has gone through something so similar to her, and the bond is pretty instant. However, this is where the story starts to dive into the darker aspects.

Delaney ends up with a unique side effect due to her brush with death. She can now sense death, and actually has physical symptoms when close to someone who is about to die. There are cases where someone dies while she is very close to them and she sees Troy in the area as well. The novel spends a lot of time teasing whether or not Troy and Delaney are causing the deaths. The real thought provoking part is Delaney desire to help those in pain. She wants to ease their suffering. Troy has one way of dealing with it, and you’re holding your breath waiting to see what Delaney will do.

Fracture is a darker read that asks you thought provoking questions. It leaves you with questions that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

Born Wicked Trailer

This trailer is awesome. It's made me want to read the book even more. What is it with witches and feathers though?!

This Dark Endeavour by Kenneth Oppel

I loved this novel. LOVED! It's full of action, angst, and a well done love triangle. I am dying to read Such Wicked Intent when it comes out this summer. If you missed it I have reviewed this one on the blog already.

Covers and synopsis for Between the Lines and Kill Me Softly

First up is Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer.

This not only has a pretty cover, but the  premise sounds amazing - hot guy from a book turns out to be a real teenage guy trapped in the book! Awesome right?! If you want to learn more, check out Goodreads for the details.

My fairytale obsession really is at an all time high right now. Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross could not have come at a better time! I am officially dying of want, and can't wait to read it. A young girl goes to find her parents graves only to find out she's Sleeping Beauty! The cover is stunning too! Again, Goodreads will give you more information if you wish.

OTHER

Book Expo America

You can pretty much expect me to have this on her quite a few times between now and the actual event. I purchased my pass and am all set to go! It feels much more "real" now that I have something purchased and confirmed.

Westjet Airlines

If you read my little "about me" blurb you know that I work as a travel agent. I recently won some tickets on Westjet Airlines to go anywhere they travel within North America. I am super excited as I have always wanted to go visit California. I have a friend who lives there, and there is quite a bit I want to see. Needless to say I am already planning it, even though it's not until the fall sometime.

Friday Hops!

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q: Many readers/bloggers are also big music fans. Tell us about a few of your favorite bands/singers that we should listen to in 2012.

This is horrible. I hardly keep up with current music. I love music, and listen to it all the time, but I pretty much listen to the same music. I am a huge 80's music girl. I especially love the "hair bands". Recently I've been listening to Adele. I've always liked Pink too.

I tend to write my reviews while listening to Taylor Swift...not sure what it is, but I love her.

TGIF at GReads! is a weekly blog hop hosted by Ginger from GReads

Q: Which books are at the top of your list to be read this year (new or old releases)?

WOW.....way too many. I am going to list 15 of my choices here. I could list way more though.

1. Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin
2. The Selection by Kiera Cass
3 Insurgent by Veronica Roth
4. Until I Die by Amy Plum
5. Dreamless by Josephine Angelini
6 Mara Dyer # 2 by Michelle Hodkin
7 Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake
8 Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock
9 Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver
10 Goddess Interrupted by Aimee Carter
11 Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson
12 Immortal City by Scott Speer
13 The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
14 City of Lost Souls/Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare
15 Fever by Lauren DeStefano

I would have included Gilt by Katherine Longshore, but I just recently read it.

Happy weekend and Happy reading!

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
When alchemist Sydney is ordered into hiding to protect the life of Moroi princess Jill Dragomir, the last place she expects to be sent is a human private school in Palm Springs, California. But at their new school, the drama is only just beginning.
Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Bloodlines explores all the friendship, romance, battles and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive - this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone's out for blood
I read all the Vampire Academy novels and followed Rose’s journey to the satisfying end. I was eager to pick up Bloodlines and see where this journey would take me.

The writing in this novel was on par with what you expect from Richelle. Her novels are engrossing and she makes you care about the characters. I this novel felt a little different than the Vampire Academy novels though. The plot twists were all pretty easy to figure out, especially because we know so much Sydney doesn’t.

Sydney is likeable enough most of the time, I just found it harder to connect with her than Rose. Her demeanour is suppose to keep people at arms length however, so that may have come from her character. I found her pretty judgemental at times, and I couldn’t relate to that. I mostly just missed Rose’s voice.

Adrian broke my heart in this novel. He’s still hurting after Rose. He is really sort of lost, and pretty much a mess. I enjoyed his friendship with Jill in this novel too. He is really sweet with her, and it brings out a side of Adrian that I really like.

I do love Adrian and Sydney’s chemistry though. She does something that nobody else has done before - she showed that she has faith in him. She expects more from him when others expect nothing. They use the whole “he’s Adrian” excuse for not expecting him to live up to his potential. Sydney pushes him to live up to it, and not for her, but for himself.

I am excited to learn about Eddie, and hope he is a large part of the next books. He was a character I really liked when we met him in Rose’s story, but he was always kept on the sidelines.

Getting to know more about Sydney’s “job” and how the alchemist stuff works was the high point of the novel. They group mentality that is pretty much programmed into them from a young age is a little scary though.

The ending of this totally makes me excited for the rest of the books . A certain someone shows up in the last few pages and that really got me wanting to read the next book.

While it was fascinating to find out more about the alchemists and Adrian, it has a different feel than the Vampire Academy series, and it may take some getting used to.

Waiting on Wednesday...Sweet Evil

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences? This is life for sons and daughters of fallen angels in Sweet Evil.

Anna, a tender-hearted southern girl, was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage, and her will-power is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

A cross-country trip forces Anna and Kai to face the reality that hope and love are not options for their kind. When it's time for Anna to confront her demons, will she choose to embrace her halo or her horns?
Gorgeous cover, and that synopsis sounds amazing. Can't wait to learn more about the bad boy Kai, and Anna,

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Victor and Konrad are the twin brothers Frankenstein. They are nearly inseparable. Growing up, their lives are filled with imaginary adventures...until the day their adventures turn all too real.
They stumble upon The Dark Library, and secret books of alchemy and ancient remedies are discovered. Father forbids that they ever enter the room again, but this only peaks Victor's curiosity more. When Konrad falls gravely ill, Victor is not be satisfied with the various doctors his parents have called in to help. He is drawn back to The Dark Library where he uncovers an ancient formula for the Elixir of Life. Elizabeth, Henry, and Victor immediately set out to find assistance in a man who was once known for his alchemical works to help create the formula.
Determination and the unthinkable outcome of losing his brother spur Victor on in the quest for the three ingredients that will save Konrads life. After scaling the highest trees in the Strumwald, diving into the deepest lake caves, and sacrificing one’s own body part, the three fearless friends risk their lives to save another
I read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein years ago. I enjoyed it and my interest was piqued when I heard there was going to be a prequel set when Victor Frankenstein was a teenager.

The references to Shelley’s Frankenstein are apparent and done so well. The story absolutely fits into her created world and is just as engaging in it’s own right. The writing is well paced, and this book is really well written. You’ll be sucked in immediately. The story is action packed. I was holding my breath in some parts, because they were that tense.

Twins Victor and Konrad are as different personality wise as they are similar look wise. Konrad is more level headed, a strong student, and a gifted athlete. Victor however is a complex, highly emotional young man. He is more mischievous than his brother, and more likely to get into trouble. I found both of them very likeable.

The relationship between Victor and Konrad is so wonderfully developed. The author manages to create a bond that seems very real. The feelings Victor has of being inadequate when comparing himself to Konrad are very common in sibling relationships and the love he felt at the same time equally common. He would do anything for Konrad, but still strives to be better than him.

The whole notion of power, and what happens when people have it is teased throughout the novel. Victor pushes, and tests the boundaries of alchemy. Flushed with minor success he constantly wants more, creating dangerous situations. It really foreshadows the events in Frankenstein.

The love triangle that exists between Victor, Konrad and Elizabeth is one of the better triangles in YA. While the thought of a woman coming between two brothers is a hard one to stomach, this doesn’t feel wrong. Elizabeth is presented as a wonderfully complex, caring, strong, intelligent, and brave young woman. It is no wonder both boys love her. Each loves different parts of her - Konrad her “angelic” side and Victor her wild “animalistic” side. I enjoyed that while the relationships certainly progress and push forward the plot they were secondary to the action.

The last few pages will leave you crushed, and gasping for the sequel.  The story pretty much begs to be made into a movie, and I hope it happens. Those looking for a glimpse of what happened to cause Victor  to go down his dark path will enjoy this well written read.

Shine by Lauren Myracle

Shine by Lauren Myracle
Release Date – May 1, 2011
Publisher Website – Amulet
Publisher Social Media - Twitter
Pages - 350 pages
My Rating- 8/10
**Obtained from the library**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
When her best guy friend falls victim to a vicious hate crime, sixteen-year-old Cat sets out to discover who in her small town did it. Richly atmospheric, this daring mystery mines the secrets of a tightly knit Southern community and examines the strength of will it takes to go against everyone you know in the name of justice.
Against a backdrop of poverty, clannishness, drugs, and intolerance, Myracle has crafted a harrowing coming-of-age tale couched in a deeply intelligent mystery. Smart, fearless, and compassionate, this is an unforgettable work from a beloved author.
I was first drawn to this novel due to the similarities it has to Matthew Shepard and his story. I can remember the first time I heard about Matthew Shepard. His story really impacted me, and I have never forgotten it. This author was obviously touched by his story as well.

This book is one of those reads that will stay with you, make you ache, and cause you to think. You will think about your role in the world, and if you’ve made a difference. You’ll think of all those times you should have stood up for someone being bullied, or called someone on a remark you heard them make. You realize how each little incident hurts, and is part of a larger problem.

The story is intense, gut wrenching, and the author doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff. The writing is engrossing, and you’ll be sucked into the mystery of what happened the night Patrick was attacked.

The characters are all so wonderfully complex, flawed, and real. All of the characters are written in such a way that you feel like you really get to know them; even the minor characters.

When we meet Cat she has just come off a period of self imposed exile. Something horrible happened to her that made her withdraw from all her friends.  Her desire to get to the truth of what happened to Patrick is really inspiring. She sticks to what she believes and doesn’t back down even after being told to “let it be”. I found her courageous, strong willed, and caring. She was a mess, and not perfect, but you understand where she is coming from.

The little we get to learn about Patrick is mostly told via flashbacks/memories.  He seems like an outgoing, funny guy who is a fantastic friend. It makes what happened to him all the more heartbreaking.

When the secrets and lies are revealed, and the truth is revealed you are left feeling sad. The person responsible for Patrick may not come as a huge shock, but it is still crushing.

As dark as this novel is there ends up being moments of hope intermixed with the moments of despair. It shows you that even the darkest moments you can find the light. It ultimately ends on a hopeful note, and has a message that we should all carry with us.

This is a weekly meme hosted by the awesome Kristi at The Story Siren. It gives us a chance to showcase the books we got during the week.

I received one book from my friend this week. It was part of my Christmas gift. My camera battery needs to be charged so you'll have to settle for a picture of the cover from Goodreads.

I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You by Ally Carter (goodreads)

This sounds really fun. Looking forward to checking it out.

Happy reading everyone!

Obsessions...this week...

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

Cover of City of Lost Souls

So pretty! Seriously, it's so romantic, and the colour scheme is amazing. I am dying to read this book! I won't lie though...kinda wish Magnus Bane was on the cover. *fingers crossed for the next one*

Hemlock's love triangle

Ok, so if you follow Kathleen Peacock on twitter you may have seen her mention the love triangle in This Dark Endeavour by Kenneth Oppel. She mentioned how well done it is. I am reading This Dark Endeavour now and she is totally right. This has made me even more excited to read her debut novel Hemlock, because she obviously knows her love triangles (and her book has one according to the synopsis).

cover and synopsis for Masque of the Red Death

This was my Waiting on Wednesday pick but I love the synopsis so much and the cover is stunning I had to mention it again. If you haven't read the synopsis you really need to head over to Goodreads and do so. I can not wait for this book.

MOVIE

Tangled (Disney)

I might be the only person who hasn't seen this yet. I recently watched it with my three nieces and LOVED it. Such a cute movie. Mandy Moore is adorable as the voice of Rapunzel. I am going to go out and purchase it now because I loved it so much. You know it's bad when you are asking your nieces to watch it again! :)

OTHER

Fariytales

Between the awesomeness that is Cinder and Once Upon a Time fairytales are coming back in a big way. Retellings, reimagings, and the classics are all seeing a resurgence. I am thrilled, and can't wait to see what the rest of the books in Marissa Meyer's series has in store for us.

Follow Friday/Book Blogger Hop

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q: Go count the number of unread books sitting on your shelf. How many?

Um, I would say between 40-50 books are waiting for me to read them. Not too bad actually.

TGIF at GReads! is a weekly blog hop hosted by Ginger from GReads

Q: What are some of your reading goals for the new year?

Well completely my 2012 Reading Goal Challenge of 125 is one of them. Also the Debut Author Challenge. It is not totally book related, but I want to continue to become a better blogger as well.

Happy weekend and Happy reading!

Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

My Rating- 8/10

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

The astonishing final novel in Richelle Mead's epic series!

Murder. Love. Jealousy. And the ultimate sacrifice. Now, with Rose on trial for her life and Lissa first in line for the Royal Throne, nothing will ever be the same between them.
Saying goodbye to characters you love is always hard. You have come to care about them, and you want an ending that does the series you love justice. I was satisified with the ending in Last Sacrifice (for the most part).

I am sure everything I can say about Richelle’s writing has been said in my previous reviews. She draws you in, captivates you and makes you care about these characters. This novel amps up the risks and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Rose has grown and changed so much since the first book. I felt for the first time that she truly was Dimitri’s equal and was ready to be with him as such.  Her progression and transformation is one of my favourite parts of the novels. Is she perfect? Of course not, but that’s what makes her real.

I ended up feeling so sorry for Adrian. He is totally a casualty of Rose trying to fight her own feelings. I wasn’t too destroyed for him because I knew he was in the next series, so hopefully he gets his happily ever after in those.

Lissa actually surprised me in this novel. She took risks, stepped up and helped Rose. She truly became someone that I could see being Queen.

As for the ending, Rose’s story ends as perfectly as I could have hoped for. Her story seems wrapped up and I felt ok with saying goodbye. Her and Dimitri are amazing together, and I really like him.

I wish we would have had a clearer ending for a lot of the characters. Christian’s future happiness seems to not be guaranteed at the end of the book. It made me realize how much I had come to like his character because I wanted to leave his story with him in a good place.

While this may not have been my favourite out of the whole series, it was a decent ending to a fantastic series. I am looking forward to catching up with Adrian, and Sydney in the next series!
