As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last

A memoir is a hard thing to critique. It is someone's experiences in their own words. It makes commenting on the events in the novel difficult. I went into Spare with no real set expectations. I wanted to read it out of a sense of curiosity but also to learn about the young boy I remember watching walk behind his mother's coffin when I was a teenager.

I imagine that lnowing you were the 'spare' would come with its own set of baggage and issues. I cannot imagine knowing as a child that you were the 'less important' one compared to your sibling. Harry was definitely aware of this from a young age and it was something that was even discussed by his family. It is something that lingered for me as I read even though for Harry it was something that always just was. It was a fact that he just always knew.

The fact that a ghostwriter was used for this is not a secret. They were pretty forthcoming that Harry did not write this by himself. The writing is, however, a highlight. It is very well written and well paced. It feels natural so that the reader becomes engrossed in the story. It makes the reader feel that the story is being told to us rather than us reading it ourselves.

The most prevailing thing I took away from this book is a complete distain for the reporters, paparazzi, and others who took a traumatic event in a young child's life and made it a spectator sport. Harry despises all of them and it is easy to see why. The culture that is cultivated around him led to hardship for not just Harry but those around him. His previous girlfriends were stalked and harassed for simply daring to date him. The impact on others of him being the Prince is what struck me the most. It made connecting with people harder in a lot of ways. Everythig he did was scrutinized. His grief and private struggles were made public for everyone to comment on. The mistakes that were made when he was younger were put under a harsh spotlight.

Ownership is something that, for me, ran through this novel. Harry made some mistakes as a young man. He will be the first to admit those mistakes. There is definitely some ownership of those mistakes and his role in them. He is, however, also quick to point out the role others played in these mistakes. I do think time and experience has made Harry see these events more clearly but I do think he is still growing and learning.

The last part of the book detailing how cruel everyone was to Megan was heartbreaking. Harry shares enough while recognizing that part of it is not his story to tell. There are many examples of how awful people were to Megan but that this cruelty extended to bringing their infant son into it is inexcusable. Those who may have wondered why they left England will not after finishing this book. Harry did the right thing for his wife and they did what was best for their family.

If you have any interest in the British monarchy I would recommend this book. If you are at all curious about Harry and Megan I definitely recommend this book. It is a vulnerable, if one sided, look at the life of a young man who grew up in the public eye and wanted to tell his story in his words.
Kathyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10868261850875209066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7440155126902938632.post-84277234523359334492023-02-15T13:23:00.001-08:002023-02-15T13:23:04.936-08:00Waiting on Wednesday ... Former child stars reunite to uncover the tragedy that ended their show -and discover the secret of its enigmatic host -in this dark supernatural thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Hide.

Thirty years after a tragic accident shut down production of the classic children's program Mister Magic, the five surviving cast members have done their best to move on. But just as generations of cultishly devoted fans still cling to the lessons they learned from the show, the cast, known as the Circle of Friends, have spent their lives searching for the happiness they felt while they were on it. The friend-ship. The feeling of belonging. And the protection of Mister Magic

But with no surviving video of the show, no evidence of who directed or produced it, and no records of who-or what the beloved host actually was, memories are all the former Circle of Friends has.

Then, a twist of fate brings the castmates back together at the remote desert filming compound that feels like it's been waiting for them all this time. Even though they haven't seen each other for years, they understand one another better than anyone has since.

After all, they're the only ones who hold the secret of that circle, the mystery of the magic man in his infinitely black cape, and, maybe, the answers to what really happened on that deadly last day. But as the Circle of Friends reclaim parts of their past, they begin to wonder: Are they here by choice, or have they been lured into a trap?

I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every week.

It has been a long while since I've posted one of these so I am doing one now. Hoping to have them be weekly on Fridays again as of next week.

The is basically the Daisy Jones and the Six edition because we got so much news about the upcoming television show recently.

TV/MOVIES

Daisy Jones and the Six Trailer

The trailer was recently released for this very anticipated adaptation. It not only looks amazing but we get to hear a snippet of music as well.

That's right.... It'll be a monthly post and focus on the new movies I most want to see that month. I am excited to see what movies you are excited for as well.

Here is what I am excited for in February:

1. Knock at the Cabin

Release Date: February 3

This movie piqued my interest when I heard it was based off a well reviewed novel by Paul Tremblay. It has an intriguing premise and I like many of the cast.

This seems like an impossible choice - save your family or save the entire world. I hear the book has a divisive ending so I am curious to see if they change it for the movie.

2. Magic Mike's Last Dance

Release Date: February 10

I really enjoyed the first two movies in this trilogy and am excited that it is going to be set in a new location.

The first movie was a mix of fun and serious. The second focused on the fun. I am curious to see what the third one focuses on (it seems to be fun based on the trailer). I am also hoping that some of the other guys in the previous two movies make cameos at least.

What are you most excited to see this month? February always feels longer than it actually is. It seems like it takes double the amount of time January does. I always get impatient for winter to be over and for the snow to go away. The extra long feel to January through March does not help.

Since February is (technically) a shorter month I have a smaller to be read list. There is also one show that I am the most excited for compared to rhe other.

1. Daisy Jones and the Six

This is my most anticipated show. I loved Taylor Jenkins Reid's novel that this is based on and the casting is perfect. I am obsessed with the fact that this fictional band technically exists now and I cannot wait to have the album in my hands. I am counting down the days to March 3.

2. Succession

This is one of my favourite shows on television right now. The acting is incredible and the writing is always sharp. I cannot wait to see the fallout from the events of the season three finale.

3. Love and Death

I am intrigued by the cast in this one. It has Jesse Plemmons, Lily Rabe, and Elizabeth Olsen, among others. It details the murder of Betty Gore by Candy Montgomery.

4. Ted Lasso

This is another show that I cannot wait to see the fallout from the previous season. This show is so wholesome and charming. It is a show that leaves you with a smile - at least normally.

What shows are you most looking forward to seeing this year? These, for me, include the possibility that every upcoming book, movie, or television could be amazing. It is the potential that leaves me excited. With this in mind I decided to create a list of movies that I am most looking forward to seeing this year. These movies do not have trailers and some only have the vaguiest of synopsis but something about them has intrigued me.

These are in no particular order and release dates/year are subject to change.

1. Saltburn

This is the second full length feature from director Emerald Fennell. She made my 'will watch anything from this director' list with Promising Young Woman and I cannot wait to see what she does with Saltburn. Not much is known about the plot except that it focuses on a rich family and is about obsession. It has Roseamund Pike and Barry Keoghan in the cast which only increases my excitement.

2. Challengers

Luca Guadagnino directs it and I will automatically watch it. I have really enjoyed his last few movies and this one sounds equally great. It stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O' Conner is a story about two tennis players, a rivalry, and what sounds like a bit of a love triangle.

3. May December

This stars Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Carles Melton. It focuses on a married couple whose relationship was tabloid fodder as she was his teacher when they got together. An actress comes into their lives to do research for a film about them. This intrusion coincides with the husband grappling with being an empty nester in his late 30s as their children graduate high-school and begin to get ready for college. It sounds like this will cause him to reexamine the relationship and the events of his youth.

4. Fair Play

This has been called an erotic/corporate thriller that revolves around a woman's promotion at her company sends her partner on a downward spiral that threatens to unravel their engagement. It stars Pheobe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich. I miss erotic thrillers so I am excited to see if this will mean a comeback.

5. Nosferatu

Bill Skarsgard is starring in this remake of the classic vampire tale. It is all about obsession and horror and I cannot wait.

6. Oppenheimer

Cillian Murphy and Christopher Nolan teaming up again was reason enough to see it but Cillian Murphy getting the spotlight was an even bigger reason. This is the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb.

7. Renefield

This is a Dracula story told from the perspective of his familiar/servant. I was sold on it thanks to the fantastic trailer and that the cast includes Nicholas Hoult and Nicholas Cage. It looks both hilarious and scary.

8. Flowers of the Killer Moon

This is based on real events and a bestselling book. This true crime story is set in the 1920s and tells the story of the murder of some Osage tribe members. The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Jesse Plemmons and should be in consideration come Oscar time.

9. Barbie

This is perhaps the movie I am most curious about. We do not have any real plot details but the fact that Greta Gerwig is involved is enough to get me excited and Margot Robbie looks amazing as Barbie.

I am going to leave it as 9 picks. I am sure there will be many more that I add throughout the year.

What movies are you looking forward to in 2023? Let me know in the comments.
Kathyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10868261850875209066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7440155126902938632.post-53067078295180269282023-01-19T07:00:00.001-08:002023-01-24T21:41:10.366-08:00Waiting on Wednesday ... Their sexual excitement depended on domination and humiliation, and as their relationship progressed they played out increasingly dangerous and elaborate variations on that pattern. By the end, Elizabeth had relinquished all control over her body—and her mind.

With a cool detachment that makes the experiences and sensations she describes all the more frightening in their intensity, Elizabeth McNeill deftly unfolds her story and invites you into the mesmerizing and shocking world of Nine and a Half Weeks—a world you won't soon forget

This review deserves (and needs) to start with a trigger warning. 9 and a Half Weeks is the story of an abusive relationship. It is physically, mentally, and sexually abusive. It is a complicated, complex relationship but an abusive nonetheless. It is told through the prism of the woman who lived it and that lends it a lens that is interesting and biased.

There is something to the matter of fact way that this story is told that lingers with me. We get the sense that Elizabeth was still grappling with the impact that this relationship had on her while writing this novel. It has both the tone of someone deep in the throws of a toxic relationship that they see as something else entirely and someone with the benefit of hindsight. It is called a 'cool detachment' in the synopsis and this feels like the perfect description for the tone of this book.

There is a romantic thrill to the early stages and this relationship and that is sharply contrasted with the later abuse that occurs. Her lover pushes boundaries in a way she finds sexy and a little dangerous in the beginning. She, at first, likes it. It doesn't take long for those inches he takes to become miles. The abuse doesn't register as such as first because part of her likes giving up control and it creates this hazy, blurry existence for her that quickly spirals out of control.

The most fascinating part to me was reading how this woman was eased into accepting things she would not have normally accepted. It feels like Stockholm Syndrome brought on by sex and exhilaration. It was a short relationship, lasting just a little over two months, but it is one that definitely left a lasting emotional scar on her. It is a defining experience that I cannot imagine did not permanently change her.

The breaking point, when it comes, is just as swift as the beginning. The author says that she believes she could have ended up dead and I believed that in the end. The way things were progressing could only have led down a path that was dangerous to not only Elizabeth but others.

Those looking for the erotic read promised in the synopsis may want to look elsewhere. It gets pretty unsexy fairly quickly as it quickly escalates to abusive. The sex scenes are tinged with a sense of dread. It is not so much sexy as it is voyeuristic. The reader knows the wreckage is coming but can't look away. I have not seen the movie made from this book but I cannot imagine it remains sexy for very long either.

I think this novel showcases just how rapidly you can get caught up in something that is damaging and absuive. It adeptly highlights that anyone can find themselves in a situation like this even if they think otherwise. It definitely will be triggering for some, but I found the honesty and vulnerability that Elizabeth shared in her story to be the core of this novel.
Kathyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10868261850875209066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7440155126902938632.post-58545874978155638992023-01-13T06:51:00.000-08:002023-01-13T06:51:11.683-08:00Waiting on Wednesday ...

Back in 2004, The Daydreams had it all: a cast of innocent-seeming teenagers acting and singing their hearts out, amazing ratings, and a will-they-or-won't-they romance that steamed up fan fiction forums. Then, during the live season two finale, it all imploded, leaving everyone scrambling to understand why.

Afterward, the four stars went down very different paths. Kat is now a lawyer in Washington, DC. Liana is the bored wife of a famous athlete. Noah, the show's golden boy, emerged unscathed and is poised to become a household name. And Summer, the object of Noah's fictional (and maybe real-life) affections, is the cautionary tale.

Since I majorly fell behind last year I am starting these monthly the lists/recaps from scratch.

January also has a hint of promise about it. The entire year an unknown question mark that could become anything. I decided to take that notion and make this year all about joy. My reading challenge is about books that make me happy and that is what I want to focus on as I start the reading year. I forsee lots of light romance reads in my future as that is what I feel like embracing.

I have picked a few books to read this month and I hope to finish all of them before Feburay.

Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner

9 and a Half Weeks by Elizabeth McNeill

Six Ways to Write a Love Letter by Jackson Pearce

American Queen by Sierra Simone

Real Easy by Marie Rutkoski *ebook*

I am also including two books I have not gotten yet as they come out TOMORROW.

Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo

Spare by Prince Harry

I have included the first book in my Hollywood reading challenge. It'll be a monthly post and focus on the new movies I most want to see that month. A Man Called Otto

Release Date: January 6 (limited) / January 13 (wide)

This is not only a remake of a Swedish movie but it is adapted from a book titled A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. It has Tom Hanks playing a curmudgeonly man who learns to live again. It looks sweet and worth watching in this typically slower month.

I have heard good things from early screenings and it has piqued my interest enough to be the only movie releasing this month that I plan on seeing in theatres.

The only other thing I will be going to see will be any potential Oscar movies I haven't seen yet.

What are you most excited to see this month? I normally do #PopCultureResolutions but I have decided to switch it up this year.

2022 was not a great year for me in a lot of ways so I have decided to make embracing joy my them for 2023. This means actively choosing what makes me happy and putting my energy towards things that will help me be happier.

I also wanted something that was a little bit more low key for me to work towards.

I kept all this in mind and decided to read 12 books (one a month) that are Hollywood set or Hollywood adjacent in some way. Yesterday I shared my top five reads of 2022 and today I am sharing my favourite movies and television.

These are in no particular order (as that would be impossible).

This is going to be a mix of newer releases and old as the only criteria I had for making this list was that it was a new watch for me this year.

Here are my favourite movies of 2022:

1. It also means looking forward to what the new year may bring. This week will be filled with both as I talk about what I loved in books, movies, and TV this year and talk about what I am anticipating next year. Today, I am going to detail my top reads five of 2022 before moving on to what I can not wait for in 2023.

I'll also have a post going up tomorrow with my favourite in movies and television for the year.

My reading definitely suffered in 2022. The year, on the whole, was not a great one for me in any sense. My lack of reading is why there are only five choices this year. I can not wait to dive into 2023 and all it has to offer.

These are not in any particular order as that would have been a even harder choice to make.

My Top Five Books of 2022:

1. Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe

2. I'm The Girl by Courtney Summers

3. A Merry Little Meet Cute by Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone

4. Fable by Adrienne Young

5. She Said by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey

What books did you love this year? Any on my list make your list as well? What books did I miss this year that I absolutely have to make time for in 2023? Let me know in the comments.
Kathyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10868261850875209066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7440155126902938632.post-743890795268530712022-12-14T18:03:00.003-08:002022-12-15T09:32:37.210-08:00#2023MostAnticpiated - The Last Tale of the Flower Bride

My #2023MostAnticipated event continues with a book that sounds magical and also happens to be the adult debut of a beloved young adult author.

The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi is next to be featured from my list and it is certainly an intriguing sounding read. It'll be a monthly post and focus on the new movies I most want to see that month. I am excited to see what movies you are excited for as well.

Here is what I am excited for in December:

1.Spoiler Alert

Release Date: December 9

This is the movie adaptation of the memoir by Michael Ausiello. It looks incredibly sad - definitely going to need tissues as the trailer made me cry.

I have heard good things from early screenings and it has only made me more excited.

2. Babylon

Release Date: December 23

I tend to like Damien Chazelle's movies and am fascinated by 1920s Hollywood. I was pretty much obsessed with the idea of Babylon since it was announced.

It has a star filled cast and, while it has mixed reviews, I personally think I will love it.

3. I Wanna Dance With Somebody

Release Date: December 23

Biopic tend to do well with the Oscars. This one looks like a worthy watch there is no denying it will have great music.

Naomi Ackie is playing Whitney and she looks fantastic. She may not be singing (not many have that voice) but it seems everything else is there.

Those are the movies I am most excited to see. I am going to include one other movie that I have already seen and that I cannot wait for everyone else to see.

1. Women Talking

Release Date: December 25

This is based on a book and it is such a good adaptation. The plot revolves around a group of women discussing the ramifications of sexual abuse in their community.

The cast is incredible and it feels both timeless and timely. I cannot recommend it enough.

What are you most excited to see this month? Let me know in the comments.
Kathyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10868261850875209066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7440155126902938632.post-28064268575016850562022-12-02T04:35:00.000-08:002022-12-02T04:35:35.706-08:00#2023MostAnticipated - Bad Blood

My #2023MostAnticipated event continues with a book that mixes vampires with family drama. Katee Rose is living the dream as America's number one pop star, caught in a whirlwind of sold-out concerts, screaming fans, and constant tabloid coverage. Everyone wants to know everything about her and her boyfriend, Ryan LaNeve, the hottest member of adored boy band CrushZone. Katee loves to perform but hates the impossible demands of stardom. Maybe that's why she finds herself in the arms of another CrushZone member, Cal Kirby. Quiet, serious Cal, who's always been a good friend to Katee, is suddenly Cal with the smoldering eyes and very good hands. One unforgettable night is all it takes to blow up Katee's relationship with Ryan, her career, her whole life...

Now. Kathleen Rosenberg is okay with her ordinary existence, and leaving her pop star image in the past. That is, until Cal Kirby shows up with the opportunity of her dreams--a starring role in the Broadway show he's directing and a chance to perform the way she's always wanted. The two haven't spoken since the joint destruction of their careers, and each of them blames the other, making their reunion a tense battle of wits and egos. Katee reluctantly agrees to the musical, as long as she keeps her guard up around Cal. But rehearsals are long, those eyes still smolder, and those hands are still very good. Despite everything, Katee can't deny the chemistry between them. Is it ever a good idea to reignite old flames? Especially if you've been burned in the past?

Once More with Feeling releases May 30, 2023.
