Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Welcome to New York City's Upper East Side, where my friends and I live, go to school, play, and sleep-sometimes with each other. It's a luxe life, but someone's got to live it . . . until they die.

So begins Gossip Girl, Psycho Killer, a re-imagined and expanded slasher edition of the first groundbreaking Gossip Girl novel, featuring all new grisly scenes and over-the-top gore by #1 New York Times bestselling author Cecily von Ziegesar.

Just as in the original story, Serena returns from boarding school hoping to make amends with her BFF Blair Waldorf--things just haven't been the same since Nate Archibald came between them. But here's where our dark tale takes a turn: Serena decides that the only way for her to make things right with Blair is to eliminate Nate. If that means killing him, well, c'est la vie. Her attempted murder doesn't go unnoticed by Blair, however, who isn't about to let Serena kill whoever she wants-not when there's Cyrus Rose and Chuck Bass and Titi Coates and everyone else who's ever irritated Blair to get rid of first . . . .

American Psycho's Patrick Bateman has met his match in Manhattan's newest, most fabulous trendsetting serial killers, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen.

When I was looking for a Halloween review I kept coming back to this cover. It’s eye catching and makes you pause. The contrast between the young, beautiful girls laughing and all that blood the covers them is a striking image.

If you can’t handle gore, this isn’t the book for you. However, if you enjoy your gore with a perfect wardrobe, lattes and French manicures this book was made for you.

When I read the back of the book and saw the following quotes I knew exactly what I was in for, and I couldn’t wait!

Delicious - Hannibal Lecter

I literally tore thorough this book - Freddy Krueger

The only thing I’m taking to summer camp - Jason

Gossip Girl Psycho Killer blends what fans of the books (and series) love about them with some highly tongue - in - cheek horror aspects. The murders are quite graphic, but they always have an “over the top” feel that keeps it campy and fun. The novel never takes itself too seriously and as a result provides a quick, entertaining read. The snappy dialogue, Upper East Side scheming and backstabbing (in this case literally) are all there.

The central plot to the story is very similar to the original first Gossip Girl book - Serena moves back to New York after taking off to go to boarding school. Instead of trying to get back into her best friend Blair’s good graces the usual way Serena decides killing is the answer. The differences in the book are mostly to add in the quite large body count, and a few choice phrases that up the campy factor.

What I liked most about the book was that it delivered exactly what you expected it to. The cover, the synopsis let you know exactly what to expect. I got a kick out of Blair and Serena trying to out do each other murder wise and both looking fabulous while doing it.

Cecily von Ziegesar’s writing is quite humorous to begin with, and it really shines in this type of story. She is able to turn your stomach one moment and laugh the next. If you’ve read her previous books you’ll be happy to know her writing style hasn’t changed.

Fans of Gossip Girl will get a kick out of this fun, gory read. Just be forward…you may never look at Blair or Serena (or a pair of high heel shoes) the same way again.

Happy Halloween!

Things I am Obsessed With....This Week Anyways

I decided to do a new weekly blog post. The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact I will be doing it myself every Saturday (yes, I am aware it's Sunday today).

So this week my obsessions are:

BOOKS

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

I just finished this book the other day. I LOVE both the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series and this book is Cassandra Clare's best one yet. I am so excited to talk about it when it's released!

The cover of Gilt by Katherine Longshore

Um, do you see the gorgeousness??! Seriously. Swoon. It's stunning. The synopsis takes my breath away too! I have been obsessed. So obsessed that it will become my icon sometime next week. See my WoW post for this week for more.

The UK cover of Until I Die by Amy Plum

The Die For Me cover was so pretty. This is even more stunning. I am hoping the North American cover is just as stunning and can't wait to see it.

TV

Jeremy and Anna from The Vampire Diaries

One of my favourite, if not my favourite, couples on Vampire Diaries. Anna got to visit Jeremy in this week's episode even though she died last season, and I got a little emotional. Ok, so maybe a lot emotional. They are adorable together, and I am so sad we can't keep Anna forever. Steven R McQueen and Malese Jow have amazing chemistry.

MOVIES

Character Posters for The Hunger Games movie

I am sure everyone has seen them. They are awesome. They give me hope that our beloved story will come alive on the big screen in a way that makes us happy. PEETA!! <3 The trailer for My Week With Marilyn

Michelle Williams has already given me goosebumps in this brief glimpse. Taking on an icon like Marilyn Monroe would not be easy, and Michelle totally nails it (at least in the trailer). So excited to see this one.

OTHER

Vacation

I am off for the next week from work and have been looking forward to it all week. I am going to Toronto on Nov 1 and will be there for a couple days. My friend Maria and I are going to relax, and maybe have dinner at Moroco Chocolat.

In My Mailbox

This is a weekly meme hosted by the awesome Kristi at The Story Siren. It gives us a chance to showcase the books we got during the week.

I have one book to show this week, but I have heard so so much about it from the awesome Shannon at Harper Collins Canada and Savvy Reader.

The Single Girl's To-Do List by Lindsey Kelk (goodreads)

It sounds adorable, and cute! Exactly what I need after some heavier stuff. I am going to Toronto in a few days and Anna Dressed in Blood and this one are coming with me.

What books did you get this week? Leave me a comment and I will check it out.

Happy reading everyone!

Friday Hops!

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q: If you could have dinner with your favorite book character, who would you eat with and what would you serve?

I would want to have dinner with Noah Shaw from The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. As for what I would serve...hmm....

I am more interested in dessert. It would totally be strawberries with chocolate and some champagne.

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted by Crazy for Books. It's a great way to meet new people and friends around the blogworld!

Q - “What is your favorite Halloween costume?
Even if you don’t celebrate, what kinds of costumes do you like?”

I would like to dress up as Anne Boleyn one year. I love the dresses from the 1920's as well (the little flapper dresses are cute).

Happy weekend and Happy reading!

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Every flame begins with a spark.

Ashline Wilde is having a rough sophomore year. She’s struggling to find her place as the only Polynesian girl in school, her boyfriend just cheated on her, and now her runaway sister, Eve, has decided to barge back into her life. When Eve’s violent behavior escalates and she does the unthinkable, Ash transfers to a remote private school nestled in California’s redwoods, hoping to put the tragedy behind her. But her fresh start at Blackwood Academy doesn’t go as planned. Just as Ash is beginning to enjoy the perks of her new school—being captain of the tennis team, a steamy romance with a hot, local park ranger—Ash discovers that a group of gods and goddesses have mysteriously enrolled at Blackwood…and she’s one of them. To make matters worse, Eve has resurfaced to haunt Ash, and she’s got some strange abilities of her own. With a war between the gods looming over campus, Ash must master the new fire smoldering within before she clashes with her sister one more time… And when warm and cold fronts collide, there’s guaranteed to be a storm.

I picked this up as everyone who has read it seemed to have really enjoyed it.

The novel starts with a fight between Ashline and a girl in her school. Immediately, I know what I was in store for. Karsten Knight sets the tone and feel of the entire story right from the first page. Those who have issues with violence and fighting may object, as there is plenty throughout the novel. Ashline is beating up a girl for hooking up with her boyfriend. I had to chuckle a bit, because I knew this would make some people angry. However, it is EXACTLY what happens. The guy cheats and his girlfriend takes it out on the girl he cheated with instead of her boyfriend. If you look at Greek mythology it is filled with examples of Goddesses taking revenge on the woman who caught the eye of her husband. Sadly, it happens.

The writing is full of action and mystery. We learn things as Ashline does for the most part and we really learn only what Ashline knows.

Ashline was a character that I had a harder time relating to. It might be because I am so different from her. She's quick tempered, some what aggressive, and athletic. I found myself liking a lot of the secondary characters though.

The love story in this novel is more "lust at first sight" than love. It's better than the insta-love of other novels, but Colt gave me the creepies. I always got the impression he knew more about Ashline than he was letting on.

The mythology is interesting. I especially liked the glimpse we got into the other gods/goddesses. I just wish we had learned more about the backgrounds, abilities and who these characters were. I am hoping that the next books dive into more of the characters, and allows us to really get to know them.

Overall this was a book that was just ok for me. I enjoyed some aspects, and was frustrated at others. I do think this might be one of those books that is better when looked at as part of the entire series and am curious to see what will happen next.

Waiting on Wednesday... Gilt by Katherine Longshore

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Gilt by Katherine Longshore.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

In the Tudor age, ambition, power and charismatic allure are essential and Catherine Howard has plenty of all three. Not to mention her loyal best friend, Kitty Tylney, to help cover her tracks. Kitty, the abandoned youngest daughter of minor aristocracy, owes everything to Cat – where she is, what she is, even who she is. Friend, flirt, and self-proclaimed Queen of Misrule, Cat reigns supreme in a loyal court of girls under the none-too-watchful eye of the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk.

When Cat worms her way into the heart of Henry VIII and becomes Queen of England, Kitty is thrown into the intoxicating Tudor Court. It’s a world of glittering jewels and elegant costumes, of gossip and deception. As the Queen’s right-hand-woman, Kitty goes from the girl nobody noticed to being caught between two men – the object of her affection and the object of her desire.

But the atmosphere of the court turns from dazzling to deadly, and Kitty is forced to learn the difference between trust and loyalty, love and lust, secrets and treason. And to accept the consequences when some lessons are learned too late

I am a sucker for anything having to do with the Tudor era, and am especially facinated by Henry and his wives. Anne Boleyn is my favourite, but Catherine Howard is intriguing as well. This sounds AMAZING. I am dying to read it. Also, that cover...swoon. It's gorgeous.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

It's 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. They both know that the next day, after college graduation, they must go their separate ways. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another. As the years go by, Dex and Em begin to lead separate lives—lives very different from the people they once dreamed they'd become. And yet, unable to let go of that special something that grabbed onto them that first night, an extraordinary relationship develops between the two.
Over twenty years, snapshots of that relationship are revealed on the same day—July 15th—of each year. Dex and Em face squabbles and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.

The premise of this novel intrigued me right from reading the synopsis. Checking in with two people on one specific day over a span of 20 years. I got to thinking about what it would show about me if I were to do that with my life, and what story it would tell. It was interesting to see Dexter and Emma as hopeful 20 somethings, disillusioned 30 somethings, and somewhat settled 40 somethings.

I was hooked by the writing style. It’s funny, charming, heart wrenching and real. You feel like you’ve become friends with both Dexter and Emma, and it’s because you’ve gotten to know them so well. The book was much funnier than I was expecting.

Emma is the type of girl I would be friends with. She’s a little lost, not really sure who she is and what she wants to be. Her journey over those 20 years is to find herself, and come into her own. It’s a journey so many young 20 somethings take when fresh out of college. She was relatable, likeable, and you wanted her to succeed. She is caring, and a true friend to Dexter. She sees things in him that he doesn’t see in himself.

This brings us to broken, heartbreaking Dexter. I spent half the book wanting to kiss him, and the other half wanting to smack him. Dexter is the type of guy that my younger self would have fallen for head first (who am I kidding, I still would). There is a letter that Dexter writes Emma early on in the book, that honestly made me swoon. He, unfortunately, is a big mess. Borderline alcoholic, unreliable, and honestly a little selfish. When he is involved and caring he’s wonderful. He does love people in his life, and he tries to show it. He does not think he is worth much, and is easily influenced by others opinions. Emma makes him want to be a better person (most of the time, when they are talking to each other). The thing with Dexter is you end up wanting to take care of him.

The ending of the book made me want to throw it across the room. I loved the book, but the ending…sigh. I honestly wished for any other ending. It wrecked me. The true significance of the date - July 15- is revealed and it’s heartbreaking, and devastating. I understand why so many people are angry about it.

One Day is one of those novels in which the characters truly come alive, and leap off the page. I will never forget getting to know Dex and Em (or Em and Dex) and wish it could have had a happier ending.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

My name—my True Name—is Ashallayn'darkmyr Tallyn.
I am the last remaining son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. And I am dead to her.
My fall began, as many stories do, with a girl…

It’s always hard to say goodbye. As readers we come to love characters, especially if part of a series. I discovered this wonderful series a little late, but ended up loving it just the same. I had a feeling reading this would be bitter sweet, and I was right.

This book does have a different feel than the others in this series. It’s told from Ash’s point of view, and his character truly comes alive. The ice prince is more vulnerable and we learn a lot about him. I love that even though we know quite about Ash (and Puck) that there are still things to learn.

Julie’s writing, as always, is action packed, engrossing and so vivid. She manages to capture the voice of Ash and make him fully come alive. She blends humour, with heart stopping action perfectly. The world she has built is simply enchanting and so fully described that you feel as if you are in the NeverNever.

Our favourite characters are back. Puck is his sarcastic, fun self. The interaction between Puck and Ash was some of my favourite in the novel. Grim is one of my favourite characters. Our last glimpse of Grim in this novel is perfect for the final book in this series. We are introduced to a few new characters during Ash’s story. I really enjoyed The Wolf. He and Grim made me a laugh a few times.

The only thing I could say was missing was Meghan. I missed her. I wanted to find out what was going on with her. I liked her in the previous novels, but was surprised to find how much I missed having her point of view.

Be prepared to laugh, gasp, sit on the edge of your seat, and even cry as you follow Ash along his path. All of the characters have you wishing for some form of happily ever after for them, and it’s because of this that you are so invested. Ash’s journey and decisions are not easy, and as a result this story packs an emotional punch.

The Iron Knight was the best ending possible for these characters. I am hopeful that this is just a “see you later” rather than a permanent goodbye. I have a feeling we may see some of our favourite characters again in spin offs that Julie may have planned. I will be most happy to welcome them back.

Until I Die by Amy Plum Cover Awesomeness

As most of you know I loved Amy Plum's first book Die For Me. LOVED. It had such a gorgeous cover too.

The cover for the second novel in this series was just released and, if possible, is even more stunning.

The colour scheme is my favourite. I love the blues and purples. So pretty.

It's going to be a long wait until May when it's release and we can see this gorgeousness in hard cover. However, if you're like me and can't wait to read it, you may want to check out Amy's website for an amazing contest.

In My Mailbox

This is a weekly meme hosted by the awesome Kristi at The Story Siren. It gives us a chance to showcase the books we got during the week.

I had an epic book week. I got three books in total.

The first book was one that I won in a Goodreads contest. I was so excited when it showed up I scared my cat. She ran and hid under my bed. I was a little excited.

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare (Goodreads)

I have already started reading it, and it's perfection. I am loving it so far, and Magnus Bane is forever my favourite

A huge thank you to Simon and Schuster Canada for the contest.

I also got two books from the library. My stupid camera is not working right now so you will have to settle for cover pictures from Goodreads.

Anna Dressed in Blood By Kendare Blake (Goodreads)
Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead (Goodreads)

I have heard nothing but amazing things about Anna Dressed in Blood. It is going to be my next read after Clockwork Prince, and it'll fit perfectly with Halloween.

I am loving the Vampire Academy series, and can not wait to dive into this one.

What books did you get this week? Leave me a comment and I will check it out.

Happy reading everyone!

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Rose's fate to kill the person she loves most? It's springtime at St. Vladimir's Academy, and Rose Hathaway is this close to graduation. Since Mason's death, Rose hasn't been feeling quite right. She has dark flashbacks in the middle of practice, can't concentrate in class, and has terrifying dreams about Lissa. But Rose has an even bigger secret .... She's in love with Dimitri. And this time, it's way more than a crush. Then Strigoi target the academy in the deadliest attack in Moroi history, and Dimitri is taken. Rose must protect Lissa at all costs, but keeping her best friend safe could mean losing Dimitri forever...

After finished Shadow Kiss I wanted to scream. I want to cry and scream some more. Not only did I not have book four available to read immediately, but my heart had just been shattered.

If you’ve read this book you’ll know exactly what I am talking about. Richelle basically rips your heart out….you love it, but it hurts just the same. This storyline set ups what I am sure is a intense journey for our favourite Dhampir. It was a moment that will change EVERYTHING for the next few books.

The writing in this novel is as good as the previous two. Action paced, and full of emotion. You become invested in these characters and the outcome of their story.

Christian really grew on me during this book. I liked him well enough in the previous books, but I adore him after this book. He and Rose make one bad ass team. The whole “Moroi should be able to fight” debate intrigues me. I think Christian shows what a Moroi can do and what they could bring to the battle against the Strigoi.

Rose is more fragile in this book. We see what Mason’s death has done to her, and we learn a great deal more about what being Shadow Kissed means for Rose. We also start to look at what being a guardian means to Rose, and what she is willing to sacrifice for her job. She is maturing quite a bit, but there is still that rebellious, quick witted girl I liked from the first books.

I enjoy Adrian’s character a lot as well. He is funny, and keeps Rose on her toes. She’s meant to be with Dimitri, but I enjoy their interactions. I hope that he and Lissa learn more about their magic and what exactly they can do.

Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series keeps getting better with each book. I am so invested in these characters, and the storylines that Richelle has created. If you haven’t read any of these books yet, do so immediately.

Winners!!

I had a few contest that have now ended and figured it was time to announce some winners. Sorry for the delay, things have been crazy!

Waiting on Wednesday...Goddess Interrupted

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Goddess Interrupted by Aimee Carter

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Kate Winters has won immortality.

But if she wants a life in the Underworld with Henry, she’ll have to fight for it.

Becoming immortal wasn’t supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she’s as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he’s becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate’s coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Henry’s first wife, Persephone.

After the first book in this series, The Goddess Test, I've been dying to read more. I can not wait for more Henry! Swoon. I am curious about Persephone, and all the drama she will bring. I also love the covers of these books, so pretty.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Love conquers all, so they say. But can Cupid’s arrow pierce the hearts of the living and the dead—or rather, the undead? Can a proper young Victorian lady find true love in the arms of a dashing zombie?

The year is 2195. The place is New Victoria—a high-tech nation modeled on the manners, mores, and fashions of an antique era. A teenager in high society, Nora Dearly is far more interested in military history and her country’s political unrest than in tea parties and debutante balls. But after her beloved parents die, Nora is left at the mercy of her domineering aunt, a social-climbing spendthrift who has squandered the family fortune and now plans to marry her niece off for money. For Nora, no fate could be more horrible—until she’s nearly kidnapped by an army of walking corpses.

But fate is just getting started with Nora. Catapulted from her world of drawing-room civility, she’s suddenly gunning down ravenous zombies alongside mysterious black-clad commandos and confronting “The Laz,” a fatal virus that raises the dead—and hell along with them. Hardly ideal circumstances. Then Nora meets Bram Griswold, a young soldier who is brave, handsome, noble . . . and dead. But as is the case with the rest of his special undead unit, luck and modern science have enabled Bram to hold on to his mind, his manners, and his body parts. And when his bond of trust with Nora turns to tenderness, there’s no turning back. Eventually, they know, the disease will win, separating the star-crossed lovers forever. But until then, beating or not, their hearts will have what they desire.

In Dearly, Departed, romance meets walking-dead thriller, spawning a madly imaginative novel of rip-roaring adventure, spine-tingling suspense, and macabre comedy that forever redefines the concept of undying love.

Ever think you would fall in love with a zombie? I never thought I would. Lia Habel has managed to make me do just that with her fun, intense debut novel.

Lia Habel’s writing is addictive. She hooks you right from the beginning and keeps you invested to the very last page. She has incredible descriptive narrative that helps with her world building. The world Lia’s created is so complex, and complete. It’s easy to imagine it. I loved that society decided to go back to a simpler time in some ways when they were rebuilding. It gave the story a little something extra and I enjoyed learning about New Victoria. This novel has it’s funny moments, it’s touching moments, moments that will scare you and others that will make you sigh.

The characters were interesting. Nora, a young high society lady who is more comfortable studying military history than preparing for parties. I loved her. She was funny, had fire, and I adored that she was short (like me!). She gave the impression of being delicate in looks, but was someone that was capable of taking care of herself and others. She is also someone who is willing to get to know someone before making decisions about them.

Her love interest Bran Griswold is infected with a virus that causes it’s victims to come back as “zombies”. With help from doctors, and modern science he is able to live a pretty decent life. Bram is a soldier, and can only be described as a gentleman. He’s so gentle, and understanding. He gets why Nora might be apprehensive and tries to make he feel at ease. He is the type of guy you will swoon over. I can already tell you I will be bawling when it comes time to say goodbye to him (hopefully some cure can be found). I just loved how his and Nora’s relationship progressed without it happening too fast. She learned to trust him, and THEN she fell for him. The lock game made me chuckle!

The other characters are just as well developed and charming. The bad guys are ones you really love to hate, but still very well developed. I am looking forward to getting to know each of them more. Nora’s best friend Pamela was one of my favourites. I kept picturing this proper lady in full gown rushing a zombie with her parasol. Bad ass, and awesome. Chas, a female zombie who is a soldier with Bram, is also awesome. She loves giving people a make over, but can shoot a gun with the best of them. I found the women to be really powerful, and that was awesome to read.

Lia Habel has made me want to fall for a dashing zombie, and has left me anxious for the follow up book in this series. If you’re looking for beauty, and something unique in your next zombie book than this is one you should pick up!

Boys seem intoxicated just from looking at her. His own family becomes stricter than ever. And Tristan has to fight his own urge to protect her, to be near her no matter the consequences….

I wanted to read this book as soon as a I read the synopsis and saw this gorgeous cover. I am happy to say that Crave was an interesting, quick paced read.

The characters were likeable. It’s easy to feel for Savannah. This poor girl has been ditched by her best friends and doesn’t really know why. She is treated like a freak by her classmates, but has a great group of friends. She seemed like every other high school girl. She seemed like someone you knew.

Tristan is the “golden boy”. Similar to most sport playing high school “superstars” that we may remember from high school . This one just happens to have a sweet side, and is part of the Clann. He seems to have it easy but struggles with living up to his parents expectations of him, and doing what he wants vs. what they want.

The secondary characters, especially Savannah’s friend Anne were even better. I loved how supportive and caring Anne was. She was willing to help out Savannah even without having all the facts. Emily, Tristan’s sister, intrigued me. I can‘t wait to see more of her in the next books. She was powerful, and seemed to be very capable of running the Clann. She was my favourite character in the book, and I wished she was in it more.

The two different narrations made it easier to get to know Savannah and Tristan. I felt more invested in them as a couple. The great thing is that their relationship does not feel forced or instant at all. They have known and liked each other since they were kids. They got pretend married when they were younger. It was nice to see a history and a past that could help explain the feelings they were having for each other.

The Clann and the reasons why Tristan and Savannah are forced apart are interesting and developed well. The writing is easy to follow, and keeps your interest. The only thing I could mention is that it often felt predictable. I knew early on what was going to happen, and what the outcome would be. I like a book that keeps me on my toes and doesn’t feel like a formula was used (even if one is used).

The ending was a little abrupt and if this was not a series I would not have been satisfied with it. However, there are more books to come, and I am curious to see what Melissa Darnell has in store for us.

Friday Hops!

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q: If you could have characters from a book meet and form an epic storyline with characters from a TV series, which characters would you choose and why?

Hmmm....Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast and the vampires from Twilight. I would get a chuckle out of Buffy telling off some of the Cullens. I would love to see what Buffy thinks of the Cullens and what some of the Cullen ladies think of Angel and/or Spike.

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted Crazy for Books. It's a great way to meet new people and friends around the blogworld!

Q- “What is your favorite spooky book (i.e. mystery/suspense, thriller, ghost story, etc.)?”

Hmmm...I am not really sure. I don't really scare easily and find real life stories much more terrifying. I think the author that has scared me most is Stephen King and mostly because I read him when I was much younger. Pet Cemetery was one of the few books I recall upsetting me when I was younger.

Happy weekend and Happy reading!

Crossing Age Groups - Multi Talented Authors

I think we can all agree that it takes a special kind of author to write for multiple age groups. They have to understand people pretty well to write believable characters in multiple age categories, and have a knack for knowing what works for the intended audience.

There are some authors that do it, and do it so well that they make it look effortless. Here is a list of some of my favourites

1. Lauren Oliver

Her YA series Delirium is heartbreaking and wonderfully written. It makes you feel. Her middle grade novel Liesl and Po is equally well written. She's able to invoke emotions and make you feel, regardless of age group.

2. Sara Shepard

Her fun, twisty YA series Pretty Little Liars serves up delicious twists and reveals; something her adult novel Everything We Ever Wanted also does.

3. Kelley Armstrong

Her world building is amazing, and so rich. She transports the readers of both her Otherworld series, and both of her YA series into them. Combine that with cliff hangers, and plot twists and it's no wonder everyone is hooked.

4. Ann Brashares

Ann has written the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants series. A touching tale of friendship and growing up. She took those characters and had them age with her readers writing an adult novel. It was just as touching, complex and moving as her teen books.

5. Suzanne Collins

Her YA series The Hunger Games is unique, heart pounding and addictive. Her middle grade series Underland is just as unique, and shows her talent in a different way.

Here are some authors whose current work has me dying to see what they would do outside of the current age group they write for. All of these authors have developed well defined characters, complex plots and intriguing storylines that not only appeal to the age category they are written for, but readers of all ages.

1. Cassandra Clare
2. Veronica Roth
3. Alice Sebold
4. Tabitha Suzuma
5. JK Rowling

These are just some of my favourites authors who have managed to cross age groups(and some of the ones who I hope eventually do). What do you think? Have I left anyone out?

Waiting on Wednesday...Why We Broke Up

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler, with art by Maira Kalman

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

I'm telling you why we broke up, Ed. I'm writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened.

Min Green and Ed Slaterton are breaking up, so Min is writing Ed a letter and giving him a box. Inside the box is why they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and every other item collected over the course of a giddy, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item after item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a girlfriend, will be dumped.

This sounds so interesting. I've wanted to read it since Book Expo when they had a display set up. You had to write down your own "Why We Broke Up story" and could stick it to the wall. It sounds like a book that has the potential to be funny, and sweet, and maybe a little sad too.

Expected release date - Dec 27, 2011

Everything We Ever Wanted by Sara Shepard

Everything We Ever Wanted by Sara Shepard
Release Date – October 11, 2011
Publisher – HarperCollins
Publisher Social Media - Twitter
Pages - 352 pages
My Rating- 8/10
**obtained from the publisher for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Sara Shepard, the bestselling author of Pretty Little Liars, delivers a powerful novel of family dreams, lies, and delusions. Everything We Ever Wanted begins with a phone call with allegations that rock an upper crust Philadelphia family to its very foundations, unlocking years of secrets and scandals that expose the serious flaws in outwardly perfect lives. A moving, intelligent, and unforgettable novel, Shepard’s Everything We Ever Wanted is exceptional contemporary women’s fiction that will be embraced by book clubs everywhere.

Sara Shepard is best known for her YA adult series Pretty Little Liars. When given the opportunity to read an adult novel by her I was very excited to do so. I think it takes something special to be able to write in multiple genres and for multiple categories.

We’ve all wanted things, and all hoped for things. What if you got everything you wanted? We have all also had preconceived expectations of what those things we want will be like. What if it ended up being nothing like what you expected it to be? This intense novel spotlights that and could make some people uncomfortable as a result.

The matriarch of the Bates-McAllister family, Sylvie, seems to have a perfect life; A good family, and a private school that her grandfather funded and built. However her husband has recently passed away and her adoptive son is now involved in a scandal at the school. We quickly learn that Sylvie’s perfect life has been unravelling for awhile, or maybe it was never as perfect as it appeared.

Her adopted son Scott is accused of encouraging hazing rituals on the sports team he coaches and seems to not grasp the consequences of his actions. Charles, the biological son of Sylvie and her late husband, is married to Joanna and has a new house in the suburbs. It’s what he feels he wants, and should have.

The theme of never being satisfied, or always wanting something different when we get what we had originally wanted is explored in each character. Sylvie wants closure on old family secrets, she wants the family she wished she had, and for things to be different. Joanna wants more than the life she has. She daydreamed about the Bates-McAllisters when she was younger and the reality was different than what she wanted. Her character always seemed restless and unhappy. Charles knows he is unhappy, even though he has what he thinks he wants. He knows Joanna is unhappy but can’t quite figure out what is bothering her. Scott has felt out of place in the family for quite a while and it’s something that got more pronounced as the years went on. He was always looking for something more, something he felt was missing.

The characters, instead of talking to each other, often make assumptions. They never really get to know the ‘real’ person and try to have people fit into who they think they are. They seem very real as a result.

The thing I love in writing is characters and Sara has created these flawed, realistic characters. The writing flowed well, and kept me turning the pages. There were enough twists and surprises to keep my entertained.

The story does not tie up nicely, and a lot is left unanswered. It mirrors real life where not everything is wrapped up perfectly, and not everything ends up happily resolved. If you are looking for a novel with flawed characters that just might make you look at yourself, I would recommend this book to you.

Tris and Izzie by Mette Ivie Harrison

Tris and Izzie by Mette Ivie Harrison
Release Date – October 11, 2011
Publisher – Egmont USA
Pages - 272 pages
My Rating- 5/10
**obtained from Book Expo America for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

A modern retelling of the German fairytale "Tristan and Isolde", Tris and Izzie is about a young witch named Izzie who is dating Mark King, the captain of the basketball team and thinks her life is going swimmingly well. Until -- she makes a love potion for her best friend Brangane and then ends up taking it herself accidentally, and falling in love with Tristan, the new guy at school.

I am a huge fan of the Tristan and Isolde tale, and was very excited when I heard about this book. It has such a gorgeous cover, and I was quite looking forward to reading it. Sadly, the thing that make Tristan and Isolde great ends up being lost in this modern retelling.

The characters kept me at a distance. I had a hard time connecting to any of them. Our main characters Izzie was self centered most of the time. She couldn’t see what was right in front of her, and did not really take others into consideration. Her best friend, Branna, is in love with her boyfriend. I found Branna not very likeable as a result of the way it was handled. Izzie’s boyfriend Mark is OK, but we don’t really get to know much about him. Tris is under developed. I just found something lacking character wise that kept me from caring about them.

The love connections between the characters did not ring true for me. I did not get swept into an epic romance, and even with the help of love potions did not feel Tris and Izzie as a forever love. It felt rushed (even more rushed after a plot reveal) and very “insta-love”. I think maybe if the characters had been more prominent it might have come across differently.

This leads to my biggest issue- the fantasy elements. They are fine and certainly well explored. Fans of fantasy will appreciate these elements. I feel that more emphasis was put on that than the characters though and it hurt the story.

The writing itself is simple. It might work well for younger pre-teens though. The plot felt obvious and at times a little scattered. I sometimes felt like there were parts that didn’t flow right.

I really wanted to fall in love with this book, as much as I fell in love with it’s gorgeous cover, sadly that just didn’t happen. It might be a better fit for younger pre-teens however.

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q.If you could pick one character in a book, movie or television show to swap places with, who would it be?

Mara Dyer. Getting to make out with Noah Shaw would not be the worst thing in the world. Also, Mara is awesome.

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted by Crazy For Books. It's a great way to meet new people and friends around the blogworld!

Question - “It’s time to spread some love beyond the borders of the Book Blogger Hop! This week, we aren’t answering a question. We are spotlighting our fellow bloggers. Find your favorite(s) author interview(s), guest post(s), book review(s), or bookish article(s) that ANOTHER BOOK BLOGGER featured on their site recently and tell us why you love it/them! As an additional challenge, find your favorite one of EACH of the categories above and spotlight all 4 (interview, guest post, review, article).”

The first blog I want to highlight is Eleusinian Mysteries. The fantastic Brodie's reviews are always so well written. She honestly makes me wish I had written them because they are amazing. She's also sweet, and a huge Harry Potter fan. If you are not following her, do so. My favourite review is her Lola and the Boy Next Door review.

Second blog is The Reader Bee. The awesomely cool Christy is not only a talented reviewer, but one of the nicest bloggers I've had the pleasure to talk to. She is always willing to help out a fellow blogger. Follow her if you don't already. The review I really like is her review of The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter.

The last blog is The Bookish Brunette. Ashley is hilarious, and pretty much an epic Zombie Queen. Her video blogs are fun, and funny. She's a fantastic reviewer and is also totally sweet. Follow her already! I decided to highlight her video review for the Paranormals series. It sounds so awesome and I can't wait to read them.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion . . . she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit -- more sparkly, more fun, more wild -- the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.

When Cricket -- a gifted inventor -- steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

If you read my highly gushing review of Anna and the French Kiss, or follow me on Twitter you can imagine how excited I was to finally get my hands on Lola and the Boy Next Door. I had very high expectations for this novel. I expected to swoon, to fall in love, to laugh, and most of all I wanted it to feel real. I wanted Lola to be someone I could be friends with like I felt when I met Anna. I wanted to see if Cricket could top Etienne in the hotness scale. I am happy to say that Lola was all that and more. Everything about this book was PERFECTION. The characters, the setting, and the feeling it invokes are all things that make this novel magical.

Our adorable heroine Lola is someone that I wish I was friends with in school. She wants to wear a Marie Antoinette style dress to her school’s dance which is amazing. She lives to dress up, and loves sparkles. She’s sweet, but flawed. Her family background isn’t perfect, but yet you can feel how much she loves her family (especially her fathers) and how much they love her in return. She has a fantastic best friend who is supportive and whom she’s supportive of as well.

Her two fathers were fantastic. They were present, and involved. They actually take the time to punish Lola and ask her what is going on when they notice things. They are involved enough to notice. It was refreshing.

Cricket. Swoon. Did he surpass Etienne? Almost (Etienne has that accent working for him). Cricket is the type of boy you should want to be with. He’s sweet, shy, awkward and adorable. He writes mystery words on his hands, and wears coloured rubber bands. He’s the type of boy that will give a girl the stars and the moon because he loves her.

Lola's boyfriend Max is sort of the dream of every girl at some point. I've dated plenty of guys like Max. The thing is guys like that are usually trouble. Max is this older, sexy guy who happens to be in a band. I like that this wasn't so much as triangle as Lola realizing that she was falling out of (or never actually in) love with one guy as she is falling hard for another. It shows perfectly that sometimes you don't know what love is until you're actually in it.

Stephanie’s talent is that she’s able to make her novels sensual, and sexy without there being anything graphic in them. It’s all about the build up, the tease to the kiss that you know is coming. Stephanie has you breathless waiting for the moment and when it happens you’re almost as light headed as the characters.

Anna and Etienne are in this book. They are not huge characters, but I was reminded in the brief time of why I fell in love with Etienne and why I wanted to be best friends with Anna. Stephanie has these characters that seem so real, and that stay with you much longer than the time it takes to read the book.

This novel has many quotes that I could chose to highlight, but there is one that sums up everything thing I love about the book, the boy and the girl:

“Once upon a time, there was a girl who talked to the moon. And she was mysterious and she was perfect, in that way that girls who talk to moons are. In the house next door, there lived a boy. And the boy watched the girl grow more and more perfect, more and more beautiful with each passing year. He watched her watch the moon. And he began to wonder if the moon would help him unravel the mystery of the beautiful girl. So the boy looked into the sky. But he couldn't concentrate on the moon. He was too distracted by the stars. And it didn't matter how many songs or poems had already been written about them, because whenever he thought about the girl, the stars shone brighter. As if she were the one keeping them illuminated.

One day, the boy had to move away. He couldn't bring the girl with him, so he brought the stars. When he'd look out his window at night, he would start with one. One star. And the boy would make a wish on it, and the wish would be her name.

At the sound of her name, a second star would appear. And then he'd wish her name again, and the stars would double into four. And four became eight, and eight became sixteen, and so on, in the greatest mathematical equation the universe had ever seen. And by the time an hour had passed, the sky would be filled with so many stars that it would wake the neighbors. People wondered who'd turned on the floodlights.

The boy did. By thinking about the girl.”

This book will leave you grinning, swooning, and wishing on stars for your very own Cricket Bell.

Waiting on Wednesday..The Catastrophic History of You and Me

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is The Catastrophic History of You and Me by Jess Rothenberg

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

BRIE'S LIFE ENDS AT SIXTEEN: Her boyfriend tells her he doesn't love her, and the news breaks her heart—literally.

But now that she's D&G (dead and gone), Brie is about to discover that love is way more complicated than she ever imagined. Back in Half Moon Bay, her family has begun to unravel. Her best friend has been keeping a secret about Jacob, the boy she loved and lost—and the truth behind his shattering betrayal. And then there's Patrick, Brie's mysterious new guide and resident Lost Soul . . . who just might hold the key to her forever after.

With Patrick's help, Brie will have to pass through the five stages of grief before she's ready to move on. But how do you begin again, when your heart is still in pieces?

This sounds like such a great premise. Who hasn't felt like they were dying of a broken heart?! It could end up being a really heart pulling, but sweet story.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

When Megan Rosenberg moves to Ireland, everything in her life seems to fall into place. After growing up in America, she's surprised to find herself feeling at home in her new school. She connects with a group of friends, and she is instantly drawn to darkly handsome Adam DeRís.
But Megan is about to discover that her feelings for Adam are tied to a fate that was sealed long ago—and that the passion and power that brought them together could be their ultimate destruction.

Leigh Fallon made me excited to read this book with one word - Ireland. I love Ireland, I love Irish guy and I loved the descriptions of it in this novel. Ireland really is gorgeous and it comes across in Leigh’s descriptions.

The writing itself is descriptive, well planned and it makes for a quick read. My only complaint - when it comes to the marks and how it all works the reader is given a lot of information and it can get confusing. The lineage and what is required from each parent for a marked one to be born is an example of this.

The characters are all very likeable. Megan is our main character. She’s moved around a lot as a result of her dad’s wanderlust. She is used to starting new schools, but is still nervous. She is pretty average until she meets the DiRis’ family, which is a welcome change. I really like that her father is present and interested in her life. It’s nice to see in YA books.

Adam and his family were a delight. I loved Aine. She’s spunky, very sweet, and I loved her bond with animals. Rian is hot tempered, intense and so intriguing. I can’t wait to learn more about him. Also, I realize Adam is the hottie of the book, but TOTALLY crushing on Rian. I liked the DiRis family more than Megan, and hope to learn more about each of them.

Megan’s best friend Caitlin was one of my favourites. I loved that she knew something was up and wasn’t going to back down until she got an answer. She expected Megan to tell her the truth and be a friend. Her and relationship with Killian provided some normalcy in the novel.

Adam and Megan’s love is a little bit quick to happen. However, I didn’t mind it because it can be explained by them having a pull to each other due to the marks. The characters even wonder if it’s real at first or if they feel the way they do because of the pull.

The marks themselves and the powers associated with them were quite interesting. I liked that each of them controlled an element. I think we've only scratched the surface of these powers, and what each of the marked ones can do.

A magical setting, some actual magic and some great chemistry that doesn’t feel too rushed makes Carrier of the Mark a fun debut.

My Rating- 6.5/10
**obtain at Book Expo America for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.

Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust...and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

Eve starts out very promising. Our main character discovers the harsh realities of what is facing her upon graduation, and it’s not “college level” learning like she has been told. The reality really is quite chilling and makes perfect sense for this type of society. Eve, of course, wants to get out. She escapes, but leaves her two friends behind. This is where my disconnect from the novel begins.

I couldn’t relate to the main character. She makes bad decision after bad decision. She is often the cause of trouble and issues for others. She was not capable of taking care of herself at all. I get that she had been sheltered but I found it really hard to like her.

Her friends Pip and Ruby were quite interesting and I would hope they make an appearance in the next books. A fellow student who also escapes is Arden. She’s fantastic. She’s much more capable, and quite interesting. I am hoping to see much more of Arden in the second and third book.

People who dislike insta-love in novels may have a tough time with this one. Caleb is the love interest and it happens pretty fast. It’s made all the more apparent how quickly it happens when you factor in Eve’s schooling. Eve and the other girls at her all girls school take classes that teach them not to trust men (boys, etc). They are told that men only want one thing basically and that they will hurt them. Eve is terrified of men. She should want to run the other way as a result, but as soon as Caleb saves her the romance begins.

It appears that everyone wants Eve. Caleb, Lief (another boy she meets along the way) and the mysterious “King”. The “King” is the person running things after the virus has killed most of the population and he sends people out to find Eve when she manages to escape. The “King” does provide some potential in that we don’t know much about him, but he does seems like a real threat.

The ending was quite interesting and I am curious to see where this will go. I am interested to read the next book as I feel the potential is there and hope that the secondary characters that I enjoyed are more prominent.

I think certain people will love Eve, As I mentioned, there is potential here, and a few interesting characters that made the book much more enjoyable. I just wish Eve had been one of them.
