**SPOILERS FOR PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THE SERIES**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
In the second book of the suspenseful Unrivaled trilogy from #1 New York Times bestselling author Alyson Noel, Layla, Aster and Tommy have to unearth Hollywood it-girl Madison Brooks’ secrets before one of them takes the fall for her disappearance and murder.

Layla Harrison has finally found herself in the middle of a celebrity story worth reporting. Aster Amirpour’s name is in every tabloid—even if it isn’t the good kind of publicity she hoped for. Tommy Phillips is inches away from getting the girl of his dreams, which may be harder than scoring a VIP ticket to an Unrivaled nightclub.

But Layla, Aster and Tommy never imagined it would be because they’re entangled in the disappearance of Madison Brooks—a story that’s blinded the world like a starlet blinded by the flash of a paparazzi camera.
Now, Layla is receiving mysterious messages from an anonymous source, Aster’s looming murder trial is so huge even her parents’ lawyer can’t save her, Tommy is retracing his steps as the last person Madison saw alive, and Layla’s ex Mateo finds himself lured into the fold.
You can dig up dirt about celebrities that the tabloids miss if you search long enough. But when Layla, Aster, and Tommy team up with an unsuspecting insider to unearth the truth, they’ll find that some secrets are best kept in the grave.
The Beautiful Idols series normally has everything I would want in a book. A cast of beautiful characters. A mystery at its core. A Hollywood setting. While all of this is found within this novel it, sadly, ended up just being an okay read for me.

This novel is pure escapism and offers up the kind of plot that is normally found in CW television shows and other sudsy offerings. I could easily see it as a television show with its edgy vibe, and mystery hook. This novel has another thing in common with those television shows - it has the potential of solely banking on that hook to keep people interested and not going deep enough into the story when it should. As a result of this,  it is a novel that is great fun while reading, but just as easily forgotten after you've finished.

This sequel is all about offering up more than the previous installment. More romantic entanglements, more drama, more danger. The plot points may not seem overly realistic, but this is meant to be over the top. It is meant to be heightened. The downside to this style of storytelling is that it can often lead to a feeling of disconnect. The characters have to draw you in and keep you attached if the story is not relatable, at least for me, and the characters do not do that for me. I don't feel connected to any of them even I am interested in a few of them. This style of writing is more plot driven than character driven and that often doesn't work for me.

I am still invested in the mystery surrounding Madison's disappearance and what really happened to her. After Aster's arrest in the first novel I was happy to see this particular plot point make progress in this sequel. It is the storyline that is keeping me coming back to this series and it is the most thought out element of the story in my opinion. I am hopeful that many of the side story arcs will eventually merge to become important to the larger story. It may prompt me to change my mind about the series overall if the end reveal is nuanced enough.

The characters are all classic teen show tropes. They are beautiful people doing questionable things who are put in outrageous situations. This means there is plenty of potential for romance. The romances are for the most part secondary to the main mystery. There is a potential love square happening which, in my opinion, has the potential to be the most interesting of the relationships that are being explored.

Perhaps my biggest concern is the fact that I don't feel the tension tightening. There isn't that sense of impending dread. I should feel like I cannot trust any of the characters and that anyone could be responsible for what happened to Madison and everything that followed. Sadly, I just don't feel that sense of urgency.

Fans of novels that are reminiscent of Pretty Little Liars will probably love this series. It is filled with high octane drama, and outlandish plot lines. I think this novel does what it is rather well, and those who appreciate that kind of novel are the target audience. I'll most like check out the third novel out of sheer curiosity but I am not has invested in the outcome of the series as I perhaps should be.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Everyone wants to be someone.

Layla Harrison wants to leave her beach-bum days for digs behind a reporter’s desk. Aster Amirpour wants to scream at the next casting director who tells her “we need ethnic but not your kind of ethnic.” Tommy Phillips dreams of buying a twelve-string guitar and using it to shred his way back into his famous absentee dad’s life.

But Madison Brooks took destiny and made it her bitch a long time ago.

She’s Hollywood’s hottest starlet, and the things she did to become the name on everyone’s lips are merely a stain on the pavement, ground beneath her Louboutin heel.

That is, until Layla, Aster, and Tommy find themselves with a VIP invite to the glamorous and gritty world of Los Angeles’s nightlife and lured into a high-stakes competition where Madison Brooks is the target. Just as their hopes begin to gleam like stars through the California smog, Madison Brooks goes missing. . . . And all of their hopes are blacked out in the haze of their lies.

Unrivaled is #1 New York Times bestselling author Alyson Noël’s first book in a thrilling suspense trilogy about how our most desperate dreams can become our darkest nightmares.
People call Los Angeles the city of dreams. There is always the possibility that those dreams can turn into a nightmare and Unrivaled relishes all the darkness that can be found in the California sunshine. Drugs, disappearances, lies, and a seedy club world take centre stage in this new series where even those with the purist intentions can be corrupted.

A competition with a huge prize draws different people, for various reasons. The characters that inhabit Alyson Noel's newest novel are all very different from each other. The voices of each are instantly recognizable. They each stand out on their own. Sometimes, especially in stories of this nature, the narration can sound the same or character chapters can blend together to the point that the reader is not sure who is who. This is not the case here. The characters may all have a similar goal but their motivations and personalities are so clearly expressed that the multiple viewpoint works rather well in this case. This may not be a character driven story, its plot is the driving force, but the characters are established enough that it allows this story choice to work.

The characters are all willing to do whatever they need to in order to get ahead. At times they are ruthless. There is so much blackmail, potential murder, and manipulation happening that it's easy to not like any of these characters. The fact that Alyson Noel makes you invest in them, even just a little, means she balances them. She lets you understand their characters enough to understand the choices they make and that makes all the difference.

The mystery that propels this story is only just beginning in this opening chapter of the story. We open with a splashy beginning where Madison disappears, but flashback to the time leading up to her disappearance. It ensures that the still will hold plenty of twists along the way as the story unravels the truth of what happened. The opening does get you interested, and the rest of the story manages to reveal just enough to keep you hooked. This is definitely a case where the answers that are given only lead to more questions, but

This type of book is the type that is enjoyable when you're in the mood for it. It is a fun, engrossing read that is perfect to read after a much heavier book. It's writing is easily digested and it's storyline is tantalizing enough to ensure the pages will fly by. It may not appeal to everyone, but it's target market, which are those who loved Gossip Girl and pretty much any other CW show, will undoubtedly enjoy the ride. It's the type of book that you know exactly what you're getting when you sit down to read it. It delivers exactly what it promises, and that should be kept in mind before reading. Your expectations could easily dictate your enjoyment in this case.

Unrivaled offers up soapy, sudsy fun that is tailor made for those who miss the Gossip Girl television show. It offers up betrayals, drama, glamour, and sin in the city of angels. It captures that CW tone and feel naturally, and would be right at home as a television show on that network. This is the book for you if you're looking for a summer read that offers plenty of flash, but maybe not a whole lot of substance under it's slick veneer.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOK

Cover for The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee (goodreads)

I am unsure if this is the actual cover. I've seen it around the internet but nothing officially announced anywhere. Either way, I love this cover. It perfectly captures the synopsis and that splash of red catches your eye. This is one I am highly anticipating in 2017!

Cover of Unrivaled by Alyson Noel (goodreads)

There is something extremely eye catching about the gold dipped strawberry. The synopsis also sounds great. I hope this series is fun, sexy and as exciting as I am anticipating.

TV/MOVIE

The Royal We movie adapation

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that movie rights for The Royal We have been snapped up. Lauren Graham and Mae Witman are teaming up to produce and Lauren Graham will be writing the script. Mae Witman is in talks to star. This news has me so incredibly happy as I loved this book so much. I am hoping that the extra attention will make the Freddie centric companion novel more of a possibility.

OTHER

BEA and ALA 2016

This is about when my BEA excitement kicks in and I am obsessed with it for the next few months. I am so lucky to be attending both BEA and ALA this year. I have flights booked, hotels (mostly) reserved, and am just waiting to obtain my passes for each of the events. It'll be my first time going to ALA (and have been told that I will love it) so I am very excited. ALA is hosted in Orlando this year and I am so excited to spend a day at Disney World and have drinks with Kelly (from Kellyvision) and see a bunch of other bloggers. Getting to see everyone is my favourite part of events like this so let me know if you're attending either one!

What are you obsessed with this week?
