The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

Publisher Website - Raincoast Books
Publisher Social Media - Twitter
Pages -  384 pages
My Rating - 4/5
**received for an honest review**

**quotes take from an advance reader copy of this novel**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.

Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?

Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be – whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.

What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.
Early on in The Love Interest we're treated to this quote ...
"A particularly important young woman has shown signs that she’s ready to select a partner, so two of you have to be sent in right away. We’re looking for a boy-next-door Nice and a mysterious, tortured-soul Bad.”

"Aren’t they always?"
I feel this perfectly sets up what you can expect from this novel. It's filled with tropes. It exists because of tropes, but it also decimates them. It twists them, and makes a strong commentary about them at the same time. This satire-ish novel is smart, creative, and undeniably different.

The story may feel familiar. Two boys. One girl. An epic love triangle with the highest stakes possible. That is not all this novel is though. It read as both a love letter to the tropes we're so familiar with in young adult novels, and as something setting out to create its own path. Cale Dietrich has created something not just unique but fun to read. The humour and warmth within the pages are matched only by its cleverness and I was hooked right from the first chapter.

Our narrator, Caden, may feel like a trope at times, but that is because he should. He is meant to point out the class young adult love interest character and be an homage to them. He, however, does end up becoming a character all on his own. Great care is taken to ensure that Cale isn't just one thing. He's not simply a "Nice" and he 's not quite a "Bad" either. He's a complex character that are a mix of different wants, needs, and emotions. It may sound strange, but it makes you question what the love interests in plenty of young adult novels actually want. We often do not get their point of view so they remain mysterious, but this makes you want to scratch that surface and get to know those characters better.

The stakes are high in this novel, and the reader is never allowed to forget that. Death is the consequences of stepping out of line, and that remains true until the final pages of the novel. I appreciated that the danger felt real while I was reading. Actions are not without consequences and that is a relief. Often there isn't a price for freedom in these novels, and in this case there is which felt more authentic.

The romance in this novel is tentative and starts out as a sort of friendship. It is built a little more slowly, which actually contrasts the "instalove" type of narrative the guy are supposed to be having with Juliet. This is something that builds as they spend time together and get to know each other. I came to care about all of these characters, and much like Caden, found myself surprised by it. It sneaks up on you, much like Caden's feelings for Dyl sneak up on him.

There is a quote that stood out to me while I was reading. One that I feel sums up not only the theme of the novel but as feels like the entire point the story is striving to make
Even though I had been through hell, even though I've been told I'm worthless my whole life, even though I'm gay, even though the world wants me to bow down and accept that who I am makes me insignificant, the following is true:

"I'm the protagonist, fucker!"
It shows gay characters as something other than the sidekick. It allows them to see themselves as the protagonist of their own story. We all should be the protagonist in our own stories, and this novel loudly embraces that fact. It also announces a shift from Caden thinking he is just a part of Juliet's story. He considered his feelings unimportant because it was HER story. This is him claiming his narrative for himself. He is deeming his wants and needs as important and that is the heart of this story.

I recommend The Love Interest if you're looking for something thrilling, entirely unique, and something that both embraces and dismantles common young adult tropes. Cale Dietrich has marked himself as a new young adult voice to watch with this novel, and I cannot wait to read what he writes next.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews)

Lots of exciting things arrived in my mailbox this week. Two books I am VERY excited about and some yummy treats.

First up, Raincoast Books sent me this book which made me squeal and most likely annoy my neighbours, but I am sure you won't blame me.

The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord (goodreads)

Next up is another book from Raincoast Books. I am also squealed when I received this one. It sounds amazing! I cannot wait to see how it twists the usual tropes and creates something really unique.

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich (goodreads)

A huge thank you to Raincoast Books for both of these. I have already read the Emery Lord book and trust me, you want to pre-order this!

Lastly, my friend Kelly is amazing. She sent me some Oreo cookies that you cannot get here in Canada, as well as some fancy peanut butter (that is also not available here in Canada). Both are delicious and I am pretty sure this is my new favourite peanut butter. (Thank you, Kelly!)

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

2017 Most Anticipated - The Love Interest

Next up on my 2017 Most Anticipated list is story in which a girl meets boy. Girl also meets another boy. The boys, to nobody's surprise, end up competing for her affections. You're probably thinking this sounds pretty similar to a lot of other young adult novels out there. Well....

Buffy pun for the win, but in all honesty you would be mistaken in believing that because Cale Dietrich's The Love Interest twists those familiar tropes into something that sounds entirely unique.

Here is the  Goodreads synopsis which shows that there definitely more than meets the eye to this story (in more ways than one).

A spy school?! Where love interests are trained? Not at all what you thought, right? You have to be kind of freaking out a bit because I for sure am. And, if you read between the lines of that synopsis, it definitely hints that there are other surprises that take this story in an even more intriguing direction.

I got Cale to dish on all things The Love Interest. He shares a lot of fun secrets, and also proves he is beyond awesome. I mean, he used a Kristen Bell gif. Automatic cool points.

1 What gif do you feel represents The Love Interest?

First of all, I just want to say this is my first interview and this is like the perfect first question to be asked! I’ve thought about it a lot, and I think it’s this one:

2 If someone were to make a signature drink in honour of your book, what might be included?

Tough one! I think maybe coffee – because in the book, Caden gets a job at Starbucks, mainly because the girl he must woo is obsessed with coffee. She totally got this trait from me, I think coffee is the best thing ever. Plus, on top of that, I drank a lot of it while writing TLI. So if it was a cocktail it’d probably be something with Kahlua. If it was non –alcoholic it’d be a Frappuccino.

3 The entire premise of The Love Interest sounds incredibly unique. What was the spark that triggered you coming up with this amazing sounding premise?

Ahh thanks, that’s really nice of you to say! The idea that sparked it was basically “how cool would it be if there was a training academy that the dreamy love interests of YA books were all sent to”. I had that thought and remember thinking it was really weird and interesting so I just started writing it. It was one of those ideas that kept opening up interesting story threads, like the idea that the boys would be rivals, and that there would be specific classes (boy next door or bad boy) etc. It was really fun, and I just kept building on the idea and it very quickly became The Love Interest.

4 Name a song you listed to for inspiration while writing this novel

Music is a massive part of my writing process, and I generally spend a lot of time during the early drafts making a playlist so that I can listen to specific songs during specific scenes. So The Love Interest has an official playlist, one that sort of charts out the plot of the book. As for a particular song, I’m going to cheat a little and pick three, because I can’t choose between them.

Hold On by Twin Atlantic was the one I listened to most while drafting, and then Youth by Troye Sivan was the song I listened to nonstop while revising. Recently, during the final few rounds of edits, I’ve been listening to Hypnotic by Zella Day – I think it fits really well with the spy angle of the cover.

5 If you could travel to anywhere, in any time period, when and where would you want travel?

I’d probably choose like two hundred years in the future just to see what the future is like and to drive a flying car and all that. Or, you know, I’d choose to just go to Harry Potter land right now, because I spend about 99 percent of my time wanting to be at Harry Potter land.

6 What 2017 release are you most anticipating?

SO MANY! One of the best things about being in a debut group (The Swanky Seventeens) has been that I’ve been able to read a bunch of 2017 debuts early and so far, they’ve all been amazing. I have a Goodreads list (https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/20839164-cale-dietrich shelf=swanky-17s) of the ones I’ve read, and I think they’re totally all worth checking out. As for ones I haven’t read yet, there’s again, so many, but three I’m particularly hyped for are:

Caraval by Stephanie Garber: This sounds magical and epic and I’ve been so hyped for it for so long, so I can’t wait to get a copy.

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon: This is a romantic comedy, and I’m a total sucker for romcoms. Plus it’s diverse and ownvoices, which I really like. So this is absolutely one of the books I’m looking forward to most next year.

The Temptation of Adam by Dave Connis: This one is comp’d with THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, and I have been obsessed with that book since high school. So I need to read this one.

7 If not too spoilery, can you share the first line of The Love Interest?

It’s not spoilery at all, so I sure can! It’s: All four walls of my cell are mirrors.

I am honoured to have been your first interview, Cale. I completely agree, visiting the Harry Potter section of Universal Studios actually sounds like a fantastic idea!  This entire interview has made me even more desperate to get my hands on this novel. I have a feeling I am not alone in that need either.

The Love Interest releases May 16, 2017 so I recommend preordering to help with the wait for this one. It can be preordered from your favourite retailer.

You can also follow Cale on Twitter, and visit the publisher website for more details about The Love Interest as the release date grows closer.

Are you as intrigued by this novel's premise as I am? Do you love books that take what you think will happen and twist it into something else completely? Let me know in the comments.

Be sure to stop by tomorrow to find out the next book that made this year's list!

Waiting On Wednesday ... The Love Interest

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

This synopsis probably sounds familiar .... right up until that final line. It ensured that I would immediately want to read this. I am excited to learn more about this secret organization, and to meet this characters that already sounds so interesting. It's a long wait, but something tells me it'll be worth it.

Expected release date - May 16, 2017

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOK

Cover for The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich (goodreads)

This cover for this amazing sounding novel was released just the other day. and it is amazing.

If the cover doesn't make you want to immediately pick this one up, the Goodreads synopsis will. It twists the usual love triangle premise and adds spies, secrets and danger. I am pretty much dying to get my hands on this one.

TV/MOVIE

Fifty Shades Darker Trailer

Not even going to lie, I am excited to see this because of Jamie Dornan. I was one of the minority who actually didn't hate the first movie. I am not a fan of the books (mainly due to the writing) but was curious enough to go see the first movie.

The trailer for the sequel hints as some danger, has a really hot looking shower scene, and lots of grey clothing. I get not everyone is going to be excited about this, but I am not apologizing for my guilty pleasures, either.

I hope that Dakota Johnson is just as charming as she was in the first one. She really was the reason that the first movie be anywhere near enjoyable.

I also happen to love the movie poster as well.

I need to know what lipstick shade Dakota is wearing in this poster. It's fantastic.

American Horror Story Theme Revealed

After much speculation the theme for season 6 of American Horror Story was finally revealed.

If you are unfamiliar with Roanoke, just google it (or the phrase The Lost Colony) for a crash history course. It's basically a settlement that disappeared with nobody really knowing what happened. There are urban legends, and plenty of logical explanations as well, but I am excited to see American Horror Story's take on it. The first episode was unsettling and I predict this will have more of a season one vibe and tone to it. It felt like this season has the potential to be terrifying. My recap of episode one will go up Monday. I am hoping to have most of them up on Friday's but if I am already scheduled for something the date may move a bit.

What are you obsessed with this week?
