Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Divided by time. Ignited by a spark.

Kansas, 2065. Adri has secured a slot as a Colonist—one of the lucky few handpicked to live on Mars. But weeks before launch, she discovers the journal of a girl who lived in her house over a hundred years ago, and is immediately drawn into the mystery surrounding her fate. While Adri knows she must focus on the mission ahead, she becomes captivated by a life that’s been lost in time…and how it might be inextricably tied to her own.

Oklahoma, 1934. Amidst the fear and uncertainty of the Dust Bowl, Catherine fantasizes about her family’s farmhand, and longs for the immortality promised by a professor at a traveling show called the Electric. But as her family’s situation becomes more dire—and the suffocating dust threatens her sister’s life—Catherine must find the courage to sacrifice everything she loves in order to save the one person she loves most.

England, 1919. In the recovery following the First World War, Lenore struggles with her grief for her brother, a fallen British soldier, and plans to sail to America in pursuit of a childhood friend. But even if she makes it that far, will her friend be the person she remembers, and the one who can bring her back to herself?

While their stories spans thousands of miles and multiple generations, Lenore, Catherine, and Adri’s fates are entwined.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I picked up Midnight At The Electric. The synopsis really doesn't tell you much about the story with it giving you the minimalist of details. All I really knew was that it consisted of three stories set in different time periods that interconnect. I am so glad this is all I knew as this is a story that needs to be experienced and felt.

This is Jodi Lynn Anderson at her best. It's romantic, poignant, thought provoking and exquisitely written. It has that breathtaking prose that readers have come to expect from this author. It's filled with lush descriptions, wonderful character development, and unraveled at just the right pace. It's the type of story you want to savor, but end up devouring because you're transported into the story and need to keep reading.

There are really three main characters to this story. Adri, the closed off woman who keeps people at arms length. Catherine, the dreamer who wants the best for her family. Lenore, the grieving woman who wants adventure. They all have distinct voices that make them come to life. Each of them have self contained journeys that could be fascinating stories all on their own, but create something even more magical when woven together. The most impressive thing is how each character is allowed her own agency and story. It is handled so well, and I really enjoyed getting to know each of them.

Along with three main characters comes three unique settings for each of them. The futuristic world Adri lives in. The post First World War London that Lenore is navigating. The storm ridden Oklahoma of the 1930s that Catherine calls home. Each of these is vividly painted with the lush descriptions that are found within these pages. The settings truly do come to life and they are the perfect backdrop for this story.

The three stories end up interconnecting rather beautifully. While some of the connections are immediately clear, others unravel slowly and end up being a pleasant surprise. This story really is one of connections. It focuses on the connections we share, and how those don't necessarily stop mattering when we die.

This is, in my opinion, the most romantic novel Jodi Lynn Anderson has written. It's done with her classic flair of bittersweetness, but the relationships are some of my absolute favourites. From slowly building tension, to literal sparks when people touch, there is something special about how the love stories are written and how captivating they are. It mirrors the theme of the novel, and makes each of the stories engrossing. It's not just romantic love that gets to shine. The love between family members and friends also gets it's chance at the spotlight and is equally well crafted. The bonds of sisterhood that thrum this story are some of my favourite elements, especially as it looks at sisterhood as not just being those who are blood related.

A lovely story about the ties that bond us together, what we leave behind after we die, and way our stories interconnect. This happens to now be my second favourite Jodi Lynn Anderson novel, after Tiger Lily, and I am sure it'll be one I read again and again. I urge anyone who loves having their heart punched and healed in equal measure pick this well crafted story.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews)

Lots of exciting things arrived this week! After Book Expo I am drowning in amazing books to read and am having a hard time deciding what to read next. This week's arrivals have only added to that particular problem.

First up, I have a pre-order that arrived a little early. Jodi Lynn Anderson is one of my most favourite authors so I was thrilled to have this hard cover in my hands a little early.

Midnight At The Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson (goodreads)

I also had two new Funko Pops arrive. I had pre-ordered some of the Mr Robot ones, and was super excited to have some of them arrive.

Elliott and Darlene look amazing! I am just waiting for Mr Robot himself to arrive.

I was spoiled by Harper Collins Canada this week with the arrival of some very exciting fall season reads.

Waiting On Wednesday .... Midnight At The Electric

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick is Midnight At The Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Kansas, 2065 Adri has been handpicked to live on Mars.

But as her family’s situation becomes more dire -- and the suffocating dust threatens her sister’s life -- Catherine must find the courage to sacrifice everything she loves in order to save the one person she loves most.

But even if she makes it that far, will her friend be the person she remembers, and the one who can bring her back to herself?

While their stories spans thousands of miles and multiple generations, Lenore, Catherine, and Adri’s fates are entwined in ways both heartbreaking and hopeful.
I was surprised to discover that I had not included this as a Waiting On Wednesday pick. Jodi Lynn Anderson is one of my most favourite writers and I am so excited that she has a new young adult novel coming out.

This comes out this summer so it is not even that long of a wait, and I am eager to devour my ARC as soon as I have a break in my reading schedule.

Expected release date - June 13, 2017

2017 Most Anticipated - Midnight At The Electric

You discover your favourite author has a new book coming out. You're filled with excitement right? You immediately want to pre-order it and curse the number of days that stretch between you and what is sure to be your next obsession.

Combine that excitement with the thrill of getting to interview that author about their new book. Trust me, it pretty much looks a lot like this gif...

Getting a new Jodi Lynn Anderson novel in 2017 is a huge deal for me. I have majorly loved her previous novels and am confident this new one will be just as amazing.

Just check out this Goodreads synopsis and tell me you don't immediately want to read this!

Everything about this sounds incredible and I am sure it is going to be filled with the kind of beautiful writing Jodi Lynn Anderson is known for. I am especially excited for the cover to officially be revealed!

As mentioned, Jodi has also kindly taken the time to answer a few questions about her book. The fact that I got to do this will never cease to amaze me.

1. Could you please provide a Twitter pitch for Midnight At The Electric (140 characters or less)?   A mystery tracing 3 lives through 3 different time periods intertwined by electricity and a very old tortoise 2. If someone were to make a signature drink in honour of your book, what might be included? Whiskey, elderberry syrup, and club soda   3. If you could travel to anywhere, in any time period, when and where would you want travel? I’m into the Dark Ages right now and the imagery of that time -- the darkening of Rome, and how Christianity crept toward the Celts. Only I wouldn’t want to go as a person – more like, a cloud looking down on everything. I’d like to see it but would hate to be there because, you know, swords.   4. What 2017 release are you most anticipating? Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed.   5. One of the things we know about this novel is it features three different eras. What kind of research (if any) did you do for this novel as a result? I read quite a bit. Most notably The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan -- which is this gorgeous, yank-your-heart-out look at the people who lived through the Dust Bowl. Another standout was The Case for Mars by Robert Zubrin, which totally changed how I think about colonizing Mars (the book makes such a compelling case for it being realistic, and very much in our grasp).   6. Do you have a personal favourite out of the three eras included in the novel? The idea for the book began with the Dust Bowl -- with a picture in my head of Catherine Godspeed standing by a bare tree in her dusty yard, stripped of just about everything. That was the driving force behind the story for me – the optimism and the big mistakes and the fear and the stark, scary beauty of something so enormous as those storms. I think in a way it’s the lynchpin that pulls the other stories together.   7. If not too spoilery, can you share the first line of Midnight At The Electric? Does the epigraph count? Because I love it and I think it says a lot about the story. It’s from a Woody Guthrie song about the Dust Bowl: “Sweethearts sat in the dark, and sparked.”

Tiger Lily is one of my favourite Jodi Lynn Anderson's books, so I felt this gif was warranted. There is also something magical about not only about her writing but the characters she creates as well. It is like a little bit of pixie dust has been sprinkled on all of her books so it doubly fit.

I love the idea of three stories from various time periods being interconnected and I cannot wait to discover what their connection is. I anticipate that it'll tear my heart out like her previous books but make it thankful that it did.

Midnight At The Electric is scheduled for release on June 13, 2017! Just in time for my summer reading list and a blissful reading day at the park.

It is available for pre-order from your favourite retailer right now, and I highly recommend doing so.

You can also follow Jodi on Twitter, visit her website, and the publisher website for all the details about Midnight At The Electric (including the official cover reveal when it happens).

Be sure to stop by tomorrow to find out the next book that made this year's list!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Small Weekly Obsessions post this week. As the holidays come closer there are less announcements happening but there are a few exciting things that were revealed.

BOOK

Cover for Midnight At The Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson (goodreads)

I have not seen this cover officially announced, but it is all over the place now. It's up on all the retail sites and Goodreads so I figured I could share at this point. It may change, but I really hope it doesn't. I love the whimsical, almost magical realism, feel to the cover. It has edge while still being softly romantic.

Jodi Lynn Anderson is one of my favourite authors so I am entirely sure that the words inside will be just as beautiful as this cover. I am all set to pre-order a hardcover of this and cannot wait to read it.

TV/MOVIE

Fifty Shades Darker Trailer #2

I know. I know. People are probably judging me for the fact that I want to see this. Don't care though. This second trailer has some pretty sexy looking scenes and Anastasia's lipstick game at the masquerade is on point. Seriously, I am totally coveting it. If anyone knows the shade and brand Dakota Johnson's wearing in the movie let me know in the comments, please!

Fifty Shades Darker movie poster

Along with the trailer a new poster was released and, once again, I am mostly obsessed with the lipstick colour! This sequel looks to be darker than the first one which could be interesting.

I am going to spend way too much time trying to figure out what shade/brand this lipstick is though in the next few months. *need*

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

My computer decided to stop working last week so this blog was a little disjointed. It is in the process of being fixed and everything should be back to normal next week. In the meantime, please bare with me while I attempt to keep the blog as on track as possible.

With that, here are my Weekly Obsessions!

BOOK

Midnight At The Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson (goodreads)

Jodi Lynn Anderson is one of my all time favourite authors. I fell in love with her writing in Tiger Lily and have eagerly devoured everything she's written since. Not much is known about this new book other than its brief teaser synopsis ...
Featuring three women from three different eras in history who are connected by their past.
I wonder if the Electric is a nightclub or something. I cannot wait to find out! This one is high on my spring/summer wishlist and I am eagerly looking forward to a cover.

The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer (goodreads)

I am not even going to pretend I wasn't excited to see the announcement that Stephenie Meyer had a new book releasing this fall. I was surprised, however, to hear it was an adult novel. I enjoyed The Host quite a bit and am curious to see what she'll do with a thriller.

While I was she was writing a new YA I will happily check this out once it is released. Anyone else as surprised as I was by the announcement? I love when authors are able to stealthily prepare a novel for release!

The Whole Thing Together By Ann Brashares (goodreads)

I am a huge Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants fan. I am dying for them to make the last book into a movie. It should come as no surprise that I was excited when I saw that Ann Brashares has a new book releasing in 2017. It has a very summer vibe so the fact that it is releasing in April makes it a good summer read.

It sounds like this has the potential to be heartbreaking (and anyone who read the Sisterhood books knows exactly what I am talking about) and I am going to keep that in mind and maybe not read it in public due to the high probability of crying.

What are you obsessed with this week?
