It's time to begin unveiling which titles I am REALLY looking forward to in 2014. Today's title is a sequel that has been on my wishlist since I read the first book!
Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd
Here is the awesome sounding synopsis (spoilers for The Madman's Daughter)
To defeat the darkness, she must first embrace it.Megan has stopped by to do a Question and Answer about the book, and her own pick for a 2014 release that is not be missed! I want to thank her for taking part and hope you guys are just as excited for this Frankenstein inspired novel.
Months have passed since Juliet Moreau returned to civilization after escaping her father's island—and the secrets she left behind. Now, back in London once more, she is rebuilding the life she once knew and trying to forget Dr. Moreau’s horrific legacy—though someone, or something, hasn’t forgotten her.
As people close to Juliet fall victim one by one to a murderer who leaves a macabre calling card of three clawlike slashes, Juliet fears one of her father’s creations may have also escaped the island. She is determined to find the killer before Scotland Yard does, though it means awakening sides of herself she had thought long banished, and facing loves from her past she never expected to see again.
As Juliet strives to stop a killer while searching for a serum to cure her own worsening illness, she finds herself once more in the midst of a world of scandal and danger. Her heart torn in two, past bubbling to the surface, life threatened by an obsessive killer—Juliet will be lucky to escape alive.
With inspiration from Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this is a tantalizing mystery about the hidden natures of those we love and how far we’ll go to save them from themselves.
1 Describe Her Dark Curiosity in 3 words
MYSTERIOUS, DEADLY, ROMANTIC
2 What originally drew you to The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and inspired you to incorporate it's themes into your trilogy?
It happened quite organically, luckily. At the end of THE MADMAN'S DAUGHTER, one character already has a sort of split personality situation going on that reminded me of Jekyll & Hyde, so it was very natural for the story to continue using that inspiration. I also liked that Jekyll & Hyde dealt with similar ideas and themes as the first book: dark science, the dangers of scientific exploration, and dual natures.
3 Now that you've published one book, what did you find different about the process of getting the second one ready for publication?
It's so much easier the second time around! The first time, I didn't know what to expect. I had no idea what lots of publishing terms meant. Reading reviews was an emotional roller coaster. I had no idea how much marketing and publicity I should be doing. But for the second book, I feel so much calmer, and I can really sit back and enjoy interacting with readers.
4 Are you able to share a secret about one of the characters, the world, something that inspired something about the world/characters?
One of the characters in HER DARK CURIOSITY is named after my best friend. I asked her permission beforehand. She was very excited, even when I told her the character was probably going to die horrifically, but that it was nothing personal :)
5 What 2014 release are you most excited for?
I'm very excited for Alexa Duncan's SALVAGE. It's a YA feminist scifi that explores big themes and is beautifully written.
Stayed tuned for a giveaway to go up for your chance to win one of the books on my list.
Her Dark Curiosity will be in stores January 28, 2014. In the meantime if you want to find out more about Her Dark Curiosity you can visit the author's website, the publisher website, or Goodreads.
