Here is the Goodreads synopsis

After a long and heartbreaking journey to Dimitri’s birthplace in Siberia, Rose Hathaway has finally returned to St. Vladimir’s—and to her best friend, Lissa Dragomir. It's graduation, and the girls can’t wait for their real lives outside of the Academy’s cold iron gates to finally begin. But even with the intrigue and excitement of court life looming, Rose’s heart still aches for Dimitri. He's out there, somewhere.

She failed to kill him when she had the chance, and now her worst fears are about to come true. Dimitri has tasted her blood, and she knows in her heart that he is hunting her. And if Rose won't join him, he won't rest until he's silenced her...forever.

But Rose can't forget what she learned on her journey—whispers of a magic too impossible and terrifying to comprehend. A magic inextricably tied to Lissa that could hold the answer to all of Rose's prayers, but not without devastating consequences. Now Rose will have to decide what—and who—matters most to her. In the end, is true love really worth the price?

*****Potential spoilers for previous books*********

I sat down to write this review knowing it would be a tricky one to talk about without giving much away. I may reference things that have happened in the previous books so if you haven’t read them, read at your own risk.

Richelle Mead has written a series that is addictive, filled with passion, friendship and complex characters.

The writing in this book was on par with the rest of the series. Fans of the others will quickly read through this instalment as well.

This book felt like saying goodbye. We’re saying goodbye to the Academy as our beloved characters gear up for graduation. We are saying goodbye to their childhood, and they are becoming adults. It gives this book (and the book before it) a much different feel than the earlier books in the series.

Rose is different is this book. She’s quite obsessed with finding out how to cure a Stigori (if it can be done). I sympathized with her longing to free Dimitri. I totally got it. She is quite reckless in her obsession. In some ways it felt like she was taking steps back from her progress, however, there are moments where she makes the more “grown up” choice. Rose really has blossomed into a fantastic guardian, and it’s been amazing got read her character progression.

If I didn’t love Dimitri so much I would feel horrible for Adrian. He’s hurt by Rose’s determination to help Dimitri. He feels the unresolved feelings lingering in Rose. You can’t help but hope he meets another girl that will distract him from Rose, as she is clearly in no position to be moving on.

Most of this book deals with Rose's journey to deal with Dimitri. The court politics I so enjoyed in the previous novels also comes into play.

The stakes are higher now than when they were in high school. It’s not just being removed from school anymore, and that makes for a more dangerous feel. You’re aware that there could be serious consequences for the actions many characters take. It leads up into our cliff hanger. There are different sorts of cliff hangers. Some leave you heartbroken, others leave you screaming, others leave you with your mouth open. This offers the kind of cliff hanger that shocks you. I am so glad I have Last Sacrifice ready to go because I don’t think I can wait very long to read it.

Waiting on Wednesday...Bloodrose

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Bloodrose by Andrea Cremer

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Calla has always welcomed war. But now that the final battle is upon her, there’s more at stake than fighting. There’s saving Ren, even if it incurs Shay’s wrath. There’s keeping Ansel safe, even if he’s been branded a traitor. There’s proving herself as the pack’s alpha, facing unnamable horrors, and ridding the world of the Keepers’ magic once and for all. And then there’s deciding what to do when the war ends. If Calla makes it out alive, that is.

In the final installment of the Nightshade trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Andrea Cremer creates a novel with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat until its final pages. A dynamic end to this breathtaking trilogy.

I have read the first two books in this series, and I am dying to see how it's going to end.

Gift Ideas for the Bookish People On Your List

The holidays are right around the corner. I thought I would create a list of gift ideas for the book lovers on your list.

I am sure we've all been there. You know your friend/family member/etc is a book nerd. The problem is you don't know which books they need, and you've usually gotten them gift cards so you're looking for something else. This is what my list will be. Since getting Noah Shaw is not a possibility, these are all things that I would love to get as a book lover (*hint hint*).

1. A Book from Books By You

Ok, Ok, I know I said NO BOOKS. However, this is one that they can't get in stores. It's special, and is perfect for that book lover who has always wanted to be the star of their own novel. You provide them with the details and you have a customized gift that anyone would love.

They have many choices, for all age groups. They even have a great Classics section that will make you the star in Pride and Prejudice!! Who hasn't wanted to be Elizabeth Bennett! *squee*

If you want to play around with samples, and get more information just visit www.booksbyyou.com.

2. A Reading Journal

If your purchasing for a book reviewer, and they happen to take notes while reading, this is perfect. You can find them a lot of places, but a simple notebook works well too, and that way you can match the cover to their tastes.

3.Book Cover Poster

There are some gorgeous book covers out there. If you happen to know a personal favourite of the recipient you couldn't go wrong with this. This maybe a little harder to find. I would maybe suggest finding out who took the image (if possible) and seeing if you could purchase it directly from them.

4. Book Tote

I am constantly carrying around books. A great tote would be nice. A personalized tote would be even better. Put their favourite cover on it, a favourite quote, have it reference their favourite character.

5. Munchies/Snacks/etc

Does your book lover drink wine, tea or something similar while reading? Do they like to go sit in Starbucks (or other) to read? Purchasing them a gift card/box of tea/bottle of wine/etc would be much appreciated.

6. Christmas Ornaments

If you can find an ornament that suits their favourite book, or a book ornament.

Of course you can always get the gift card, or even some books. Here are some titles I recommend for this holiday season

1. Shatter Me By Tahreh Mafi
2. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
3. Delirium by Lauren Oliver
4. Any Cassandra Clare book
5. The Hunger Games Trilogy

Happy Shopping and leave your own gift suggestions in the comments

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Catherine Vernon has been stranded in London for the summer-no friends, no ex-boyfriend Adam the Scum (good riddance!), and absolutely nothing to do but blog about her misery to her friends back home. Desperate for something-anything-to do in London while her (s)mother's off researching boring historical things, Cat starts reading the 1815 diary of Katherine Percival her mom gives her-and finds the similarities between their lives to be oddly close. But where Katherine has the whirls of the society, the parties and the gossip over who is engaged to who, Cat's only got some really excellent English chocolate. Then she meets William Percival-the uber-hot descendant of Katherine-and things start looking up . .

Falling in Love With English Boys has everything you could want - romance, humour, chocolate, and swoony love interests.

The telling of the story is unique in that it’s told through two different perspectives via blog and diary entries. The author uses blog entries for our modern Cat, and diary entries for Katherine. I thought this was really unique, and gave it a fun feel. The historical aspect to Katherine’s diary entries was a pleasant surprise. The mention of poets (Lord Byron), the war, and proper behaviour were fascinating.

I could see people having issues with the style of writing. Cat uses a lot of slang, and spells words differently. The text messages she puts in her blog posts are an example. It felt natural to her character though, so it worked for me. I had to laugh at her calling her Mom (S)mother.

The two main characters Cat and Katherine were both likeable enough. They both had a spark, a sense of humour and were different enough from each other that the two different narratives did not get confusing. I enjoyed the new friends Cat meets in London. They were fun, helped bring Cat out of her shell a bit, and the type of girls you would want to befriend yourself.

The parallels between Cat and Katherine’s story are often apparent. It made sense to have their journeys entwine. History and the present collide to provide a cute, sigh inducing ending to the story.

Is the plot a little predictable? Yes. Is it heavy on the romance? Yes. It’s one of those fun, make you happy books that doesn’t take it self seriously. It’s something you wish could happen. I want to go to England and meet my own cute English guy now.

You’ll want to read this one eating your favourite British chocolate (I recommend a Curly Wurly) and drinking a nice cup of tea. You’ll be wishing you had your own English boy to fall in love with.

In My Mailbox!

This is a weekly meme hosted by the awesome Kristi at The Story Siren. It gives us a chance to showcase the books we got during the week.

I had a pretty awesome book week. I have quite a few new additions to my bookshelf!

Revived by Cat Patrick (goodreads)

A HUGE thank you to Hachette Group Canada for this! I am so excited to read it! I have a few books that are coming out in spring 2012 that I want to read NOW, but am also wanting to save them so they count for the Debut Author Reading Challenge I am taking part in. ;)

Cinder by Marissa Meyer (goodreads) NOT PICTURED

A HUGE thank you to the publisher & NetGalley for the egalley I have waiting to be read. Again, this comes out in January, so I might wait and read it right on Jan 1st! I have to double check when the galley expires.

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand (goodreads)

Brodie at Eleusinian Mysteries mentioned this one. Something to do with hot cowboys....

Either way I was tempted enough to purchase it from Book Depository and it came (finally) this week. I am super excited to read it. It's going to be part of an Angel Theme week I am planning for April (right around my birthday).

Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick (goodreads)
Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl (goodreads)
Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl (goodreads)

I purchased the three of these while at Chapters this week. I have been meaning to read all of them and now that I have them I am hoping to fit them into my review schedule. Super excited for all 3!

What books did you get this week? Leave me a comment and I will check it out.

Happy reading everyone!

My Obsessions....for the week anyways

The awesome Kelly at KellyVison started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

So this week my obsessions are:

TV

Curiosity - Titanic episode

This TV show is on Discovery Channel and I happened to catch the Titanic episode. Riveting. I was fully engrossed for two hours. If you are at all interested in Titanic and it's haunting fate you should check it out. It goes nicely with Claudia Grey's Fateful.

MOVIES

My Week With Marilyn

I went to see this yesterday and I am totally in love with Michelle Williams performance. She's perfect. Fragile, sexy, haunted, yet so charming and lovely. She even nailed the way Marilyn walked. The other performances were good too, but Michelle stands out.

I am wanting to get my hands on the book now so that I can read it.

OTHER

Vacation

I have this coming week off of work! Today is my last shift until Monday Dec 5! I don't have anything planned other than reading, visiting my adorable nieces, and doing so much needed reorganizing of my books. It's going to be nice to relax, and not do anything!

What are you obsessed with this week?

Friday Hops!

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q: It’s Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. so we want to know what you are Thankful for – blogging related of course! Who has helped you out along the way? What books are you thankful for reading?

There are so many wonderful bloggers that I could say thank you to.

Christy from The Reader Bee (@thereaderbee)

Brodie from Eleusinian Mysteries (@peacelovevegan)

Evie from Bookish (@SeoEvie)

Michele from Just A Lil' Lost (@justalillost)

Ashley from The Bookish Brunette (@bookbrunette)

All of these ladies are awesome! They are not only amazing reviewers but love books as much as I do. They have also cheered me up on a crappy day (most likely without even knowing it). If you aren't following their blogs already you are missing out.

I would also like to thank the awesome Kelly from Kelly Vision (@khager). Not only did she provide me with an awesome weekly post, but talking about books with her is a lot of fun. She's also read books because of my suggestion - totally humbling yet awesome.

TGIF at GReads! is a weekly blog hop hosted by Ginger from GReads

Q When You're Not Reading: What occupies your time when your nose isn't stuck in a book?

I am a travel agent for a large bank here in Canada and that takes up most of my non reading time. I do also spend time with friends, and family. I go to the movies quite a bit, and do love some TV shows. I also write letters to people all over the world in my spare time. I still love getting fun stuff in the mail rather than just bills.

Happy weekend and Happy reading!

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

When Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemies, she's certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer, one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack and the man she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive.

I never really considered myself a “werewolf” story fan. I usually don't get into them as much as other novels. I have a few that I enjoyed and mostly they are very character oriented and involve other mythology. This series is no exception. I love it. I was hooked after Nightshade and Wolfsbane has left me eager for more.

The writing is perfectly paced. There is enough action, romance, twists, reveals and betrayals to keep you turning the pages. The story continues from Nightshade perfectly. You never feel confused or lost. You never just have to accept things as being part of the story. Andrea explains it all through her storytelling and characters. The one thing that is missing from the novel however is Ren! I wanted more Ren. He was seriously lacking in this novel and I have my fingers crossed we get to see more of him in the next one.

I really like the politics that exist within the packs. I especially like the under current of how the females are treated. Calla defies this and it’s great to see. Calla has these amazing moments where she is strong and totally the alpha she’s supposed to be. There are other times that I want smack her upside the head and ask her what she is doing. I am dying for her to make a choice between Ren and Shay. There was a lot of back and forth in this novel and I am hoping she makes her choice in Bloodrose.

The secondary characters, and heavy mythology are what keep me interested in this series. Bryn, Mason, Ethan, Connor, Adne, Nev, Ansel, and Sabine all had fantastic moments. I loved meeting the new characters and getting to know more about the ones we previously met.

There were twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and a few that will have a serious impact in the next novel. I am especially looking forward to seeing how Ren reacts to everything. There was some mythology teased with Ansel that I am curious about and hope it’s discussed further.

For fans of Nightshade this offers the chance to revisit beloved characters, meet some great new ones and gives you an intriguing, engaging story. It has an intense ending that will leave you wishing you could reach for Bloodrose right away. I am excited to see what happens next for Calla and her pack.

Waiting on Wednesday...The Selection by Kiera Cass

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is The Selection by Kiera Cass

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

This has been teased as being Cinderella meets The Bachelor. Totally my kind of book. I am curious as to what kind of "competition" the girls have to take part in. I also am hopeful that Prince Maxon will be quite swoon worthy. The cover is so pretty. I am just excited for what sounds like a different spin on this type of novel.

Saving June by Hannah Harrington
Release Date – November 22, 2011

My Rating- 8/10
**obtained from Book Expo America and the publisher for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

When her older sister commits suicide and her divorcing parents decide to divide the ashes, Harper Scott takes her sister's urn to the one place June always wanted to go: California. On the road with her best friend, plus an intriguing guy with a mysterious connection to June, Harper discovers truths about her sister, herself and life.

Harper Scott’s life has been turned upside down. Her sister June has committed suicide. Her mother is dealing with June’s death by drinking, her father is more emotionally distant than ever, and Harper’s overbearing Aunt has taken to coming around more. Harper’s parents announce plans to split June’s ashes and Harper decides to take them to California to scatter in the ocean instead.

Thus begins a road trip that is filled with tears, laughs, surprises, fights, crushes, protests and lots of music. Harper is joined by her best friend Laney and a friend of June’s named Jake.

I really related to the characters. I felt the connections between the three of them. The banter and dialogue was perfect and didn’t feel awkward. It read like real teenagers talking.

It might be because I have had friends like Laney but I really enjoyed her. Reckless, impulsive, a little destructive, but so loyal, kind and outgoing. It might be because I could see a little of myself in Harper that I enjoyed her most of all.

This novel asks the question “how well do you really know someone?”. Harper looked at her sister as having her life totally together, as the perfect older sibling she could never live up to. It was a shock to find out that maybe she didn’t know June as well as she thought she did. It shows that appearances can be deceiving and you never know what is going on underneath.

The writing will have you laughing, crying, and experiencing many emotions in between. It flows well, and really allows you to connect with the characters.

We say goodbye to these characters on a hopeful and satisfying note. You feel ok leaving these characters when the story ends. You’re not left with any lingering questions, and while they may not be completely happy they are at least better off than when we met them.

The play lists at the back of the novel are a perfect touch. It made me want to go and listen to so many of these songs. Music was such a driving force in this novel that having the play lists just added something extra to the experience.

If you are a looking for a touching, realistic and bittersweet story this will certainly satisfy. I hope more people pick it up as I haven’t heard anyone talk about it much. It’s one I recommend.

Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler

Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler
Release Date – November 22, 2011
Publisher Website– Razorbill/Penguin
Publisher Social Media - Twitter
Pages - 356 pages
My Rating- 8/10
**obtained from Book Expo America and the publisher for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

It's 1996, and less than half of all American high school students have ever used the Internet.

Emma just got her first computer and an America Online CD-ROM.

Josh is her best friend. They power up and log on--and discover themselves on Facebook, fifteen years in the future.

Everybody wonders what their Destiny will be. Josh and Emma are about to find out.

This novel takes place in 1996. I would have been around the same age as Josh and Emma at that time the story takes place. This would make me around the same age as the future selves that they see on Facebook (roughly 15 years into the future). I could easily recall that time period of my life, and this book brought back so many memories.

I believe that people who were teenagers around this time frame will especially enjoy this novel. It’s filled with nostalgia, memories, and does so in a clever fun way. The 90’s pop culture references were fantastic. The novel has a lot of really funny moments. Emma and Josh’s reactions to Facebook and status updates are especially funny. The meshing of the 90’s with current pop culture ( think Glee, Harry Potter, among others) and you have some great comedic moments.

Emma and Josh are typical teenagers. They are likeable enough characters, but neither one really stands out. They help the reader wonder what they would do if they were able to catch a glimpse of their own futures as a result. I think it works for this story because of the nature of the plot. I do like that the friendship between Emma and Josh seemed very natural.

A lot of the novel deals with whether or not seeing your future is a good thing, and what ripples the littlest change could make to a path you’ve already started down. The novel reinforces choice, and behaviour as powerful factors in what happens to us. It shows us that nothing is ever determined and that the littlest action can have a huge reaction to later events.

This novel is a quick, light hearted read that will leave you smiling and a little nostalgic if you were born in the 90’s. The thing I really took away from the novel, however, is that while it’s wonderful to plan for the future, make sure to live in the present. You might just miss something wonderful that is right in front of you.

In My Mailbox

This is a weekly meme hosted by the awesome Kristi at The Story Siren. It gives us a chance to showcase the books we got during the week.

I had a pretty awesome book week. I got a book that I have been really excited about.

I have three books that I got this week

Immortal City by Scott Speer (goodreads)
Everblue by Brenda Pandos (goodreads)
Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer(goodreads)

Pretty sure I *might* have mentioned Immortal City before. It sounds awesome. I may have did a little happy dance when it showed up in my mailbox. Saving this until Jan when it'll count towards my Debut Author Challenge is going to be HARD. A huge thank you to the lovely ladies at Penguin Canada for sending this along.

I won from the lovely Evie @ Bookish the copy of Everblue. The author shipped this and it's signed. She also included an awesome bookmark. I am super excited to start this one.

I had been on a waiting list for what seems like forever to get Wolfsbane, but now I have it. I am hoping to dive into it soon.

I have been super excited about Gilt by Katherine Longshore. I have some amazing stuff planned for the release, and Katherine was kind enough to send me some GORGEOUS bookmarks for the event I am planning. They are stunning! I am sad these photos do not do them justice.

What books did you get this week? Leave me a comment and I will check it out.

Happy reading everyone!

My Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

So this week my obsessions are:

BOOKS

The cover for Immortal City by Scott Speer

I love this cover so much more than the cover on the ARCs. This cover seems like it fits so much better with the story. I love the palm trees in the background, and the hot angel with the arm tattoo doesn't hurt either!

MOVIES

The Hunger Games movie trailer

Anyone that follows me on Twitter could guess this would be on here. I love our brief glimpse of Cinna! <3! Jennifer looks great as Katniss (that scene where she volunteers - PERFECT). I totally get chills when the countdown starts, and they all start running. My heart starts to race, and I am on the edge of my seat. It's going to be intense. I am so looking forward to this movie. Can it be March already?!

What are you obsessed with this week?

Friday Hops!

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q. Letter to Santa: Tell Santa what books you want for Christmas!

WOW! What don't I want Santa to bring might be the easier question.

Here are just some of the ones on my list

-Clockwork Prince - Cassandra Clare
-Anna Dressed in Blood - Kendare Blake (do not have my own copy yet)
-The Single Girl's To-Do List by Lindsey Kelk (do not have my own copy yet)
-and too many 2012 releases to count (if only Santa had a time machine to make that happen)

TGIF at GReads! is a weekly blog hop hosted by Ginger from GReads

Q. Giving Thanks: Which books are you most thankful for receiving from other bloggers, friends, family members, or publishers?

Well I am always super thankful for any ARCs I happen to be sent. I always feel nervous, anxious, and not well after I send a request (haha, yes I am a nerd). I just feel weird about it.

I am also thankful for any books that I have gotten that have a personal message written in them. I have had a few friends send me books with little notes written in them and it always makes me smile.

Happy weekend and Happy reading!

The Single Girl’s To-Do List by Lindsey Kelk

The Single Girl’s To-Do List by Lindsey Kelk
Release Date – May 11, 2011
Publisher Website – Harper Collins
Publisher Social Media - Twitter/Facebook/SavvyReader
Pages - 335 pages
My Rating- 8/10
**obtained from Book Expo America and HarperCollins for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Rachel Summers loves a to-do list:

• Boyfriend
• Flat
• Great job

NOT on the list:

• Being dumped

Best friends Emelie and Matthew ride to her rescue with an entirely new kind of list – The Single Girl’s To-Do List. Rachel doesn’t know it, but it will take her on all kinds of wild adventures – and get her in some romantic pickles too. And then it won't be a case of what but who she decides to tick off…

• Mr. bendy yoga instructor
• Mr. teenage sweetheart
• Mr. persistent ex
• Mr. deeply unsuitable

The Single Girl’s To-Do List gives Rachel the perfect heartbreak cure – and proves love is out there if you’re willing to take a chance.

I would like to start this review by thanking Ms Kelk for making me laugh so hard that I am pretty sure the bus full of people who witnessed it think I am crazy. This is just a fun, enjoyable read that will keep you turning the pages.

Lindsey Kelk’s writing is perfect for this genre. She has a quirky, fun British humour that will leave you giggling throughout the novel. She has just the right balance of humour, sexiness, and genuinely likable characters that it’s a perfect “chick lit” read.

This story starts out in a way that many girls can sympathize with - our heroine Rachel Summers is dumped. Dumped by her insensitive boyfriend and she promptly turns to her best friends for comfort. Rather than let Rachel mope they decide she should celebrate being single. Rachel has a thing for lists, and the Single Girl’s To - Do List is born.

The romance in this book was quite enjoyable. I got caught up in the chemistry between Rachel and the different guys that come into the picture. I did call early on who she would be interested in. It was fun to see her work it out, and wait with bated breath to see if they would finally get together.

Those scared that the romantic aspect of the plot will take over the novel - not to worry. The emphasis in this book is on loving yourself, and doing things for YOU! Do what makes you happy, and the relationship stuff will follow. The list of the title is a way for Rachel to get to know herself, and following her on that journey is the really charming part of the story.

I really liked Rachel. She’s such a typical girl. I mean that in the best way. She seemed average, normal, like someone you could actually know. This made character come alive. You were rooting for her in the way that you’ve rooted for Bridget Jones, Rebecca Bloomwood, or Rachel White. I loved that she was short, as I am barely 5’0. Every time she referred to herself as a “short arse” I couldn’t help but chuckle, because I could relate.

Rachel’s best friends Emelie and Matthew are the best friends every girl wants to have. They are supportive, they care about her, and genuine friendship comes through in the writing. I loved that they helped her through some of the items on the list.

If you are looking for a lighter read after something heavy, this is the perfect option. Smart, silly, sexy and enjoyable. It’s the perfect book to enjoy with a Cosmo, and maybe you’ll create your own to-do list.

Waiting on Wednesday...Immortal City by Scott Speer

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Immortal City by Scott Speer

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He’s days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone’s obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect—everyone except for Madison Montgomery.

Maddy’s the one girl in Angel City who doesn’t breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn’t recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson’s scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi—and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels’ wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it’s up to Maddy to save Jackson.

Not only is this book released on my birthday, but it sounds awesome. I am both repulsed by, and intrigued by the angel wings on the Walk of Fame. The cover is hot! The guy, the arm tattoo - seriously DROOL!

Expected release date - April 3, 2012

Super Powers

If you read my review of Shatter Me yesterday you know that the main character Juliette has a power, a gift if you will.

I thought it might be fun to ask some bloggers, authors, and other industry people what super power they wish they could have. I received a lot of great answers. Thank you so much ladies for taking the time to be apart of this!

Amy Plum - author of Die For Me (Amy's Twitter)

I know I should say “healing touch,” “cause world peace with a wave of my hand,” or even “rescue people from preternatural death” like my revenants do.

But selfishly, I would choose flying. I have dreamt about it hundreds of times. I know exactly how it feels, where in my body the momentum starts. I must have been a bird in a past life.

Lindsay at Me on Books (Lindsay's Twitter)

There are so many powers to choose from. I'd be cool to have some kind of ability over plants, like I could make them grow and trap bad guys in thick vines or huge rosebushes. I've always liked plants, not necessarily flowers but plants, and I think I'd like to have the ability to control them and make them grow as much as I wanted. Plus, I could make a killing as a landscaper. ;)

Christy at The Reader Bee (Christy's Twitter)

If I could choose any power, I would probably choose Earth Manipulation. I would mostly use this power for Good, to help plants and trees to grow faster. I'm a tree-hugger, so this power is right up my alley!

Lauren Oliver - Author of Delirium (Lauren's Twitter)

I wish I had the power to fly!

Michele at Just a Lil' Lost (Michele's Twitter)

I would love to be able to teleport. I hate how long it takes to get anywhere around the city by car or public transit. There's so many more things I could be doing if travel time was taken out of the equation. Something like Nightcrawler from X-Men. BAMF! I'm at work. BAMF! I'm in Europe. BAMF! I'm home. Love it. So efficient.

Shannon from The Savvy Reader(tweeting from @SavvyReader & @shanparsons)

This is such a tough question! Immediately, when trying to brainstorm a good power, I started scanning through the cast of Heroes and X-Men… Would I want to control the weather? Control people’s minds? Hmm… But, I think for me, the choice is obvious. I want to have the same power that Charlie, aka Jayma Mays, aka Emma Pillsburg, had in Heroes: the ability to memorize anything and everything, and be able to recall it instantly. Could you imagine, being able to read a book once, and instantly remember every fact, every word, for the rest of your life? Charlie knew all kinds of languages, had all kinds of self-taught skills, and was smart as a whip! I want that. I know this is kind of a nerdy power, and isn’t flashy at all, but that’s what I would want: to have a super amazing memory. Plus, then I could put my powers to good use by becoming a doctor or a scientist or a scientist-doctor. Also, I would obviously go on Jeopardy.

I’m not sure if I chose this superpower based on my love of reading, facts, Alex Trebek, or Jayma Mays. It could be a combination of all four. But that’s what I would choose.

Brodie at Eleusinian Mysteries (Brodie's Twitter)

I want to be greedy and say a super power that can absorb all others, so I could be a totally badass Superhero who can do everything at once. But then I'd probably go insane with so much power and become a villain. So I'll stick with time travel. How cool would it be to travel back through time and witness the amazing cultures we can only read about today? I'd love to visit Ancient Greece. And to see what earth is like in 100 or more years time. It would be such a fascinating power to use! Provided it comes with insurance in case I step on an ant in the past and wipe out the entire human race ;)

My own answer (My Twitter)

I wish I had the ability to understand and speak any language. It might seem boring but I think it could come in handy some day.

With that I ask you the same question. What super power would you most want to have? Leave it in the comments below.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Shatter Me Tahereh Mafi
Release Date – November 15, 2011

Pages - 342 pages
My Rating- 10/10

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a world as riveting as The Hunger Games and a superhero story as thrilling as The X-Men. Full of pulse-pounding romance, intoxicating villainy, and high-stakes choices, Shatter Me is a fresh and original dystopian novel—with a paranormal twist—that will leave readers anxiously awaiting its sequel.

It is fitting that this novel is called Shatter Me because that is exactly what it did. It shattered my expectations and shattered my heart.

Tahereh Mafi’s writing style is nothing short of awe inspiring. It’s different, so full of emotion and very lyrical. It engages your attention and emotions right from the beginning. I felt a whole range of emotions while reading this. I felt everything from wonder, fear, disgust, and hope. There’s a particularly gut wrenching scene involving a child that literally made me sick to my stomach. It’s a testament to the amazing writing that I felt these emotions so vividly.

Her characters are all wonderfully developed. They are rich, layered, complex characters that you can’t help but care about, even the evil ones.

Juliette’s story does not begin as a happy one. She’s been locked away for a murder she did not mean to commit. Juliette’s touch is powerful, and it was an accident. Her character has had to deal with a lot and it’s so heartbreaking. The most amazing thing is, even after all of this has happened, Juliette is kind, caring and quite strong. I am not sure I would be as strong as she is. You want to protect her, but honestly, she really doesn’t need it. She manages just fine.

Adam, the boy that steals Juliette’s heart. The back and forth, touch me/ don’t touch me between them is seriously smoking. I can’t fault Juliette for wanting to be touched after so long. I would crave any kind of connection if I had locked away as well. Add to this the fact that Adam is a hot boy who can touch her back, and it's easy to see how she falls for him. The relationship is intense, and moves quickly, but it never felt forced. You can feel the connection between these two.

The character of Warner is someone you’re going to love to hate, or maybe hate to love. I have to admit that he’s pretty hot. He is complex for this type of character. His backstory so developed. I am looking forward to reading more about him. I could see him being a temptation for Juliette. The novel focus on the struggle within her. Is her power a gift, a curse? Does it make her a monster, or something else? Can it be used for good as well as evil? Adam and Warner factor into this as she makes her way through her journey.

The ending is nothing short of heart stopping amazing. It sets the tone for the second book, and opens up a whole new world to Juliette. It’s one I can’t wait to explore.

All of this is made even more amazing when you factor in that this is Tahereh Mafi‘s first novel. HER FIRST. I can‘t wait to see what she does with book two. Thank you Tahereh Mafi, for creating such an exquisitely beautiful written novel. This book really is a must read.

My Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVison started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

So this week my obsessions are:

First I must call attention to how awesome my blog looks right now. The amazingly awesome Evie from Bookish has provided me with a fantastic new look for the blog. I love it and I think it suits my blog perfectly.

BOOKS

The trailer for Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

This is a stunning book trailer. It suits the book perfectly. I've watched it too many times to count. I makes me want to pick the book up and read it again.

The entire Harper Collins summer catalog

Did you see it yet? Some of the most amazing sounding titles. We have Until I Die by Amy Plum, The Selection by Kiera Cass, Insurgent by Veronica Roth, and Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson just to name a few. There are so many hot titles coming out I am wanting to skip right past Christmas for them.

Movies

The trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman

While I am not thrilled with the choice of Kristen Stewart for this, I can't deny that this trailer is stunning. It's beautiful, yet dark at the same time. I am very excited for this movie now which I wasn't before.

TV

Plot twists and mid-season finales

I may not like having to wait until freaking January to catch back up with some of my favourite characters, but you've got to admit there is nothing like a cliff hanger! I love both Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle and both of them had an amazing ending for the holidays. I am dying to get back to Mystic Falls and Chance Harbour.

That's all for my obsessions this week. Tell me...what are you obsessed with?

Friday Hops!

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet new blogger friends. This weeks question is:

Q. In light of 11.11.11 and Veteran’s Day tell us about your favorite solider and how he or she is saving the world. Fictional or real life.

I don't really know anyone that has served in the military or anything like that. Instead I will just take this opportunity to say thank you to all the men and women who fight for our country (and other countries) each day.

TGIF at GReads! is a weekly blog hop hosted by Ginger from GReads

Q. Love-Hate Relationship: Which characters from a book do you love to hate?

I love to hate President Snow from the Hunger Games. Bellatrix from Harry Potter. I am sure there are others, but those two stand out for me

Happy weekend and Happy reading!

The Pledge by Kimberly Derting

The Pledge by Kimberly Derting
Release Date – November 15, 2011
Publisher – Simon and Schuster/Margaret K. McElderry

Pages - 320 pages
My Rating- 6.5/10
**obtained from the publisher’s GalleyGrab for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she's spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.

Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can't be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country's only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime

I had not read any of Kimberly Derting’s previous books so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. The Pledge is a dystopian novel where language is used to keep people in line with a caste system put in place by the ruling Queen.

I am a very character driven reader. It’s how I relate to books. For me, there is very little in the way of character development in this book. The emphasis is more on rapid paced plot than getting to know the characters. Anyone who needs their books to move quite quickly would enjoy this. The ending of the story feels a little disjointed with all the different points of view (I think we have 3 or 4 during the whole novel). I feel that it kept us from really getting to know the characters. The romance in the book seems a little flat, because I didn’t feel connected to the characters.

The pacing is very quick. Things are happening, and are happening fast. You almost get whiplash from the amount of secrets Charlaina is let in on. Nobody in this book is really what or whom they seem. It gets to the point that you are not really registering the flips and twists because it all happens so fast.

I did enjoy the different languages and the fact that it was illegal to speak or understand any language that you were not officially allowed to know. The Queen was cruel, and vicious, killing without mercy. I did fear for others, but never really felt afraid for any of our main characters.

There is some great dynamics, and characters that I wished I would have known more about. Charlaina’s sister Angelina is one of the ones I enjoyed and really wanted to know more about.

I did enjoy the emphasis on there being a Queen ruler. A king could not rule, and other countries would not trade, or communicate with Ludania (or any other country) if there was not a Queen ruler. It was nice to see a little spark of girl power.

This is a book that may seem better when part of the series. I just feel it doesn’t really stand on it’s own as I am still wishing to know who these characters are. There are some high points, and I do think others would enjoy it though.

Waiting on Wednesday....Bewitching by Alex Flinn

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Bewitching by Alex Flinn

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Kendra Hilferty, the witch who curses Kyle Kingsbury in Beastly, tells about her immortal existence-how she discovered she was a witch and the various ways she has used her powers to help people throughout the centuries. (Unfortunately her attempts have often backfired.) As it turns out, Kendra has actually had a hand in "Hansel and Gretel," "The Princess and the Pea," and "The Little Mermaid"-but these are not the fairy tales you think you know! Kendra's reminiscences are wrapped around a real-time version of "Cinderella," except the "ugly" stepsister is the good guy. With dark twists, hilarious turns, and unexpected endings, Bewitching is a contemporary read for fairy-tale lovers, fantasy fans, and anyone looking for more Alex Flinn.

This sounds really fun. I liked Kendra in Beastly so I am intrigued and want to find out more about her.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.

Kendare Blake really has created something magical. This novel sucks you in and doesn’t let go until the very last fright. It’s spooky, heart wrenching, and funny all at various times. Her writing style is face paced, page turning and you’ll want to finish this one in one sitting.

Her characters are ones that you will fall in love with. I dare anyone to read it and not fall for Cas and Anna.

Cas Lowood is our main character. He’s snarly, confident, and I couldn’t get enough. His portrayal is a shining example of a male narrative done RIGHT. He was pitch perfect. I had no issues wanting to protect him. This boy who grew up too quickly after his father was murdered. This boy who wants to avenge his father, and maybe get through high school at the same time. He heartbreakingly pushes everyone away so they do not end up tangled in his intense lifestyle. His mom is present, and tries to help. They both realize though that some bumps and bruises are par for the course once he takes over the family legacy.

Anna’s story is heartbreaking. What happened to her is so horrific, so wrong, so tragic I wanted to reach into the pages and throttle those responsible for her death. This poor girl left in a white dress covered in blood (where she gets her nickname). As a ghost she is terrifying, nightmare inducing and bad ass. She’s all dark, twisty, and powerful., yet there is a softness underneath that is begging for redemption, for relief.

The book is blurbed as being a typical “Boy meets girl story” but with bite. The relationship that develops between Cas and Anna while intense, is actually rather sweet. I was rooting for them the entire time. It’s actually quite romantic and heartbreaking underneath all the scares.

Cas meets people in Thunder Bay that really complicate things. Not only is he having warm fuzzies for a murdering, intense ghost, but he has actual friends, something he tries not to have. He can’t push these people out. They are AWESOME! Thomas and Carmel. Sigh, I want to squish them and make them be together. The subtle chemistry between them is perfect for high school crushes and I love that they are so loyal to Cas. The two of them make the perfect Scooby Gang for Cas (please watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer if you don’t get that reference. Oh, and the series, not the movie!).

I think this may be one of my favourite 2011 releases this year. It’s touching, scary, and beautiful. I can’t wait to see what is next for Anna, and Cas.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Rose Hathaway's life will never be the same.

The recent attack on St. Vladimir's Academy devastated the entire Moroi world. Many are dead. And, for the few victims carried off by Strigoi, their fates are even worse. A rare tattoo now adorns Rose's neck, a mark that says she's killed far too many Strigoi to count. But only one victim matters . . . Dimitri Belikov. Rose must now choose one of two very different paths: honoring her life's vow to protect Lissa—her best friend and the last surviving Dragomir princess—or, dropping out of the Academy to strike out on her own and hunt down the man she loves. She'll have to go to the ends of the earth to find Dimitri and keep the promise he begged her to make. But the question is, when the time comes, will he want to be saved?

Now, with everything at stake—and worlds away from St. Vladimir's and her unguarded, vulnerable, and newly rebellious best friend—can Rose find the strength to destroy Dimitri? Or, will she sacrifice herself for a chance at eternal love?

****WARNING! SPOILERS FOR SHADOW KISS!!!! RUN AWAY IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT ****

After the cliffhanger in Shadow Kiss I was eager to dive into this next instalment of the Vampire Academy series. I was breathless waiting to see how Rose would deal with Dimitri being turned Strigoi.

This book had a different feel to the previous novels in the series. I am not sure if it’s Rose is different, or just a shift in writing style, but it felt different. I almost look at the first 3 as one part of the story, with the next three being more linked together. The writing style is still gripping, and you are compelled right from the first page.

Rose has left school, and is on a quest to keep her promise to Dimitri. They had both said that would not want to live as Strigoi and she wanted to make sure he didn’t. The Rose we meet in this book is understandably broken, but focused and a little reckless. After three books with these characters we’ve come to care for them, and it was rough seeing Rose so lost. She’s cut herself off from everyone, and keeps tabs on Lissa by using the bond they share.

Lissa was slightly less likeable in this novel. She was missing Rose a lot and did things that are out of character for her. The fact that Rose and Lissa are not together really changes the dynamic of the book, and not for the better. I hope they stick together in the next books, because they do need each other.

Christian, as always, remains awesome. Adrian is really growing on me. I am at the point that if Rose can’t have Dimitri Adrian will be a suitable second choice.

Which brings me to Dimitri. Sigh….If I didn’t love him already. This new, Strigoi Dimitri is hotter in a way. It breaks my heart that he is this way though. I can’t say too much about how much interaction he and Rose have, but their chemistry is palpable.

We are introduced to some new characters as well. Dimitri’s large family, some new friends in Mark and Oksana. I really liked Mark and Oksana and think Rose and Lissa would have a lot to learn from them. I also enjoyed Sydney.

There are plenty of heart breaking scenes in this novel. Rose telling Dimitri’s family what happened to him comes to mind.

The ending makes you anxious to read the next book. It shows how far Rose is willing to go for Dimitri and I am curious to know how it’ll play out.

This series is one that can not be missed. Rose is an amazing heroine, and taking this journey with her has been spellbinding.
