New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews)

Had some pretty exciting goodies make their way into my mailbox this week.

First up is the finale to one of the most addictive series I've read! I love The Royals series and am so excited to have Twisted Palace in my hands so I can find out how it ends.

Twisted Palace by Erin Watt (goodreads)

I have the best friends pretty much ever, and was gifted this next item by one of them.

If you have followed this blog at all, you'll know how excited I was when Kim (from Pingwing's Bookshelf) gifted me this. She got it in one of her Owlcrate boxes and passed it along to me. I love it and will totally be wearing it this winter.

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

First I am fully warning that there are WALKING DEAD SPOILERS BELOW!! Read at your own risk. It does spoil who Negan killed in the season premiere.

There have been lots of cover reveals and other exciting things happening!  The Harper Collins covers have especially been amazing.

BOOK

Cover for Dividing Eden by Joelle Charbonneau (goodreads)

Look at this amazing and eye catching cover!

I think that perhaps the same cover designer who did the Red Queen covers worked on this one. I love the simplistic but eye catching design and cannot wait to read this one. It sounds amazing.

Cover for Erin Watt's When It's Real (goodreads)

It is no secret that I love Erin Watt's The Royals series. I was thrilled to find out that another book would be coming out next year and this one involved a pop star and a regular girl pretending to date.

Isn't this cover AMAZING?! I love sparklers and everything about this book's premise. 2017 has amazing sounding reads coming up and I cannot wait.

OTHER

Steven Yeun on the cover of Entertainment Weekly

Obviously there are spoilers in this -- I let you know at the top of the post -- but I had to post this simply because I loved Glenn. He was my favourite character, but I knew it was going to go down the way it did when Negan and Lucille showed up.

This cover also happens to to be the first time an Asian male has had a solo EW cover which is awesome.

I am going to miss Glenn. I am going to miss the bright spot Maggie and Glenn were in the zombie apocalypse.

I am excited to get my copy because I cannot wait to see what Steven says about saying goodbye to a show he was part of for 6-ish years.

What are you obsessed with this week?

American Horror Story: Roanoke - Chapter 7

This week's episode of American Horror Story was so brutal, bloody and insane that we are all pretty much Sidney in this gif by the end of it ...

I was left with an overall feeling of 'what is even happening?!' and I loved it. We were told that there would be plenty of deaths, after all there is only one survivor, I just did not expect it to come with so many jaw dropping moments. Oh, and my fave makes his season six debut in this episode!

We start the episode with Sidney and his crew watching events unfold from their production trailer. Sidney is particularly excited about the fight between Dominic and Matt. Good to know he's still trash.

One of Sidney's assistants asks about Diana and they are concerned that they cannot reach her. Sidney is pretty flippant about the whole thing and brushes the assistant off. She goes outside just as another crew member notices Rory get stabbed on the monitors. Sidney is about to take a closer look when he hears Alyssa (the assistant who went outside) scream. Sidney goes outside to investigate and whatever he sees makes him yell for the other crew member to bring the camera. Turns out that Alyssa was stabbed and Sidney seems to be more interested in filming it than actually helping. Agnes rushes out of the bushes and stabs Sidney. Perhaps Sidney should have looked harder for her when he was warned, just saying. Agnes turns on the camera guy stabbing him as well and takes off with the camera. That is THREE deaths and we're not even 5 minutes into the show. I am totally going to keep an running tally just for fun.

Back at the house Audrey is attempting to locate Rory. Nobody believes the whole 'R is for Rory' thing. Monet snaps that perhaps they shouldn't try to scare Audrey, Rory is her husband after all. They all agree to go searching for him. Audrey snaps at Lee and asks if Lee intends to film her the entire time. Lee admits she is because she wants a record of what actually happened, not what Sidney makes everyone think happened.

Dominic calls for everyone to come because he's found something. The 'something' is a pool of blood where Rory was attacked. They all agree it is real blood. It's not corn syrup as Dominic quips (he's done enough slasher films to know). Audrey realizes that Sidney must have put Rory up to this before he left for his screen test. We cut to an interview with Audrey in one of those confessional booths you see on reality TV shows. She is crying about how she was silly to have thought it would have worked, and that the age gap must have been too much for them to overcome. Poor Audrey.

Agnes has taken the camera and set up her own sort of confessional booth. She is arguing with herself about whether the life choices she has been making, mainly murder, are the best choices. She wavers between being devastated for the death of Alyssa and the viewpoint of the Butcher that Alyssa needed to die. It's a powerful scene, and one that shows that Agnes really is mentally unstable. It's not a ruse. It's not some kind of possession. The proof of this comes when the lights go out on their own and there being a bunch of the stick figure things that the colonist love to leave behind when Agnes finally gets them back on.

Back at the house, Dominic decides he needs to talk to Shelby. He seems to be interested in pursuing at relationship with her. He reminds her of the very good sexytimes that they had. Shelby calls him an asshole just as Matt walks in. Matt misreads the situation and tells Dominic he can have Shelby if he wants. Matt is no longer interested.

In a confessional Dominic admits he wants to be the 'bad boy' of the house. He did his research and knows that the villain of the group gets the most screen time. He is happy to play the jerk even if he does have feelings for Shelby. Screen time matters more.

Shelby has run upstairs because she is understandably upset. Her marriage is over. I would be a mess. Shelby sees a camera on her bed that wasn't there before and that is when Agnes shows herself. Shelby attempts to reason with Agnes, but gets cut with the cleaver for her trouble. Shelby, realizing she is about to die, ensures she is recording everything so that everyone knows who killed her. Dominic rushes in just as Agnes is about to land the killing blow and tackles her to the ground. He goes to comfort Shelby and Agnes makes her escape.

Apparently the best person to assist Shelby in her medical crisis is Audrey because she had played a nurse once. Dominic and Matt are snipping at each other about who is helping more, so I am sure that is very relaxing for Shelby. Dominic screams at the Sidney (via the camera, obviously) to send an ambulance.  The boys resume arguing about who is going to go attempt to find the production trailer to get help. Neither guy wants to leave Shelby. Lee and Monet are over the guys and their pissing contest so they offer to go. Monet mostly offers because she doesn't trust Lee to actually come back with help. Lee shows that she is carrying a gun and is admits that she is fine with shooting Agnes. Audrey pleads for no more bloodshed and reminds everyone of the secret tunnel that can lead them out. Audrey joins them on their quest to find Sidney (and help). The tunnel is creepy and unsettling. They run into what appears to be the real Edward Mott who does not want company and chases them out of the tunnel as Lee shoots at him.

Meanwhile, Matt is being very sweet with Shelby. They have a rational talk about how the house drove them apart before the cheating or anything else happened. Shelby really wants to try to get back what they had. You cannot help but root for them to work it out.

Audrey realizes that the blood moon is rising and wants to go back. Monet wants to push forward. They finally make it to the production trailer only to find everyone dead. Audrey does not handle this well, at all.

They attempt to find a phone, attempt to start the car and other incredibly smart things but none of them work. Just as they are discussing what to do next, Agnes runs out of the woods. Lee shoots her and they run. They notice the colonists walking up to the house and so they hide. Their hiding spot also happens to be where Rory's body was strung up in the trees. Poor Audrey has his blood drip on her. As if your husband dying was not traumatic enough.

While they are giving Audrey a moment to mourn a group of guys come up and start cattle-prodding everyone. Turns out the Polks are real and Finn Wittrock is playing one of them!

It was literally two seconds (which is the gif above) but it was enough for me to confirm it was Finn. His name is, apparently, Jether Polk. I look forward to seeing more of him in the upcoming episodes (even if they have done their best to make him look unattractive). I am pretty sure there is not going to be any swooning happening (like there was with Tristan and Valentino) but I anticipate his character is going to be all kinds of fascinating (and messed up).

Back at the house, Matt wakes up in the middle of night. He walks, trance like, down into the basement of the house. Dominic follows him and sees Matt having sex with Scathach and so he goes to wake Shelby so she can see it for herself. Shelby, naturally, is not happy about any of this. She takes a crowbar and beats on Scathach. Matt is not thrilled by this turn of events. Turns out he only came back to the house because of Scathach. He loves her. Shelby snaps. She wails on Matt with the crowbar until his head is completely bashed in.  My jaw dropped. I did not expect this turn of events, and Lily Rabe nails this scene. That, also, brings our body count up to 4. Dominic convinces her to give him the crowbar as Shelby completely breaks down. He wants her to turn herself in and points out that there are camers all over the house. He has got a great point, she cannot exactly hide what happened.

The Polks take the women back to their homestead. Turns out the whole cannibal thing was also not a lie because they immediately start to prepare Lee's leg. They rub peanut oil and seasoning onto the leg. They are basically tenderizing it. *shudder* They cut Lee's leg and she screams. I am going to have nightmares forever. They torture Audrey and Monet by forcing them to eat pieces of Lee's leg. We don't know if Lee is alive but I am assuming she is at this point. The entire scene was horrific and hard to watch.

Agnes, who has cauterized her own wound and dug out the bullet, comes back to the house and yells about how they have no claim to the land. She is basically behaving as if she is the Butcher. The real Butcher does not take kindly to being impersonated I gather because she walks up with the other colonists at this point and uses her cleaver on Agnes. This brings our death total to 5 for this bloody, insane episode.

We've lost some big names, and characters already and the death toll is only going to rise. We'll be left with one survivor by the time the tenth episode ends. I predict it'll be one of the women currently with the Polks as one of them could, potentially, get away.

I am, obviously, happy that Finn is back (even if I am being deprived of my usual eye candy). I cannot wait to see how that entire storyline unravels. It is the most shudder inducing one, at least for me.

Only three episodes left for this season! It's flown by.

Until next week .... don't go back to the house you were terrorized in. Only bad things can happen.

Title: GLITTER
Author: Aprilynne Pike
Pub. Date: October 25, 2016
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers
Pages: 384
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Find it: Amazon, Barnes And Noble, iBooks, Goodreads

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike comes a truly original new novel—Breaking Bad meets Marie Antoinette in a near-future world where the residents of Versailles live like it’s the eighteenth century and an almost-queen turns to drug dealing to save her own life.

Outside the palace of Versailles, it’s modern day. Inside, the people dress, eat, and act like it’s the eighteenth century—with the added bonus of technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it’s about to become a very beautiful prison.

When Danica witnesses an act of murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play . . . blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace gates.

Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money than she ever dreamed.
But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to keep. And the most dangerous secret—falling for a drug dealer outside the palace walls—is one risk she has to take.
I am so excited to share this Q and A that I did with Aprilynne. It's fun and teases the novel perfectly (in my opinion). She offers up with a Glitter inspired drink might look like, as well as some insight into writing the novel.

Twitter pitch Glitter (140 characters or less)

Oooh! This is fun! Hmmmm….

In a futuristic society that mimics the past, a 17yo turns to dealing a designer drug to save herself. Breaking Bad meets Marie Antoinette.

If Glitter were to have a signature drink what would be included?

Absinthe. Really, really expensive absinthe, (also known as La Fée Verte, the Green Faerie) in a crystal goblet with a custom platinum absinthe spoon. One of history’s most magical drinks in the most expensive possible container. 

What was your favourite discovery you made while researching this novel?

I loved finding out about the Hameau de la Reine, which is in the complex of the Palace of Versailles. Marie Antoinette thought the plight of the peasants was rather quaint and simple and wanted to have a place where her life could be as easy and worry-free. *koff* So she built a fake farm! It had a water wheel and a cottage, and she had chickens and lambs. Oh! And she would dress up in her idea ofpeasant clothes and have, essentially, stay-cations there with her children. Ah, royalty.

If you could travel to anywhere, in any time period, when and where would you want travel

This feels like a total cop-out, but it would have been true if you had asked me before Glitter too! I would really love to visit 17-18 th Century France! It was an amazing time for the wealthy—extravagance, high fashion, incredible food—though admittedly a really awful time for the many, many poor. Thus the French Revolution. But I would just love to visit the Palace of Versailles in the … oh, mid-1700s.

Is there a song you listened to while writing Glitter or a song you used for inspiration?

I typically find a new musical to listen to over and over again with each new book I write, but for Glitter I ended up keeping the same one as for my last book, Earthrise, and that is Matilda, the Musical. I think I’ve kept this one longer than some of my others because Tim Minchin is such a talented but also intricate lyricist. I am constantly finding new nuance and meaning and internal rhyme when I listen to the words. Also, the song Quiet might be the most impactful song of my adult life. I seriously feel like he wrote it just for me. I have been known to put just that one song on repeat—especially during revisions—and listen to it for hours.

A huge thank you to Aprilynne for taking the time to answer these questions for me.

As part of the blog tour there is a giveaway where you could win one of three copies of Glitter! Enter using the Rafflecopter form below. The giveaway is US ONLY.

Waiting On Wednesday ..... Dividing Eden

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Dividing Eden by Joelle Charbonneau

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
A sweeping fantasy, by the bestselling author of The Testing, about two royal siblings forced to compete for the crown.

Twins Carys and Andreus were never destined to rule Eden. With their older brother next in line to inherit the throne, the future of the kingdom was secure.

But appearances—and rivals—can be deceiving. When Eden’s king and crown prince are killed by assassins, Eden desperately needs a monarch, but the line of succession is no longer clear. With a ruling council scheming to gain power, Carys and Andreus are faced with only one option: to take part in a Trial of Succession that will determine which one of them is worthy of ruling the kingdom.

As sister and brother, Carys and Andreus have always kept each other safe—from their secrets, from the court, and from the monsters lurking in the mountains beyond the kingdom’s wall. But the Trial of Succession will test the bonds of trust and family.

With their country and their hearts divided, Carys and Andreus will discover exactly what each will do to win the crown. How long before suspicion takes hold and the thirst for power leads to the ultimate betrayal?
Not only does this book have a STUNNING cover but it also has one of my favourite hooks in a novel - sibling relationships. Two siblings who are thrown into a competition for a throne neither thought they would inherit. I am already desperate for this book and it doesn't come out until summer of next year!

Expected release date - June 6, 2017

The Graces by Laure Eve

The Graces by Laure Eve
Release Date - September 6, 2016
Publisher Website - Abrams
Publisher Social Media - Twitter
Pages - 336 pages
My Rating - 4.5/5
**received from publisher for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Everyone loves the Graces.

Fenrin Grace is larger than life, almost mythical. He’s the school Pan, seducing girls without really meaning to. He’s biding his time until someone special comes along. Someone different, who will make him wonder how he got along all this time without her. Someone like me.

Fenrin’s twin, Thalia, is a willowy beauty with rippling, honey-colored hair. Wherever she goes, Thalia leaves behind a band of followers who want to emulate her. She casts spells over everyone she encounters, just like Fenrin—even if they both deny it.

Then there’s Summer. She’s the youngest Grace, and the only one who admits she’s really a witch. Summer is dark on the outside—with jet-black hair and kohl-rimmed eyes—and on the inside. It was inevitable that she’d find me, the new girl—a loner with secrets lurking under the surface.

I am River. I am not a Grace. But I’ll do anything to become one.
There are some books that you read at the exact right time. It's exactly the book you're in the mood for, and has all the elements that work for you wrapped up in a pretty package. This just happened to be the case with The Graces. A book that is filled with magic, unflinching characters, and a seductive quality that entices you ever closer, even as the darkness seeps into every aspect of the story.

All of the characters are varying shades of grey. Part of their allure comes from this moral ambiguity. The darkness of the characters is part of what draws you to them. As the story progresses the darkness consumes and intensifies. The story definitely twists into directions I never saw coming, and plenty of that has to do with the author's ability to allow her characters to be flawed. To allow them to do selfish things. To allow them to do the wrong thing for the wrong reasons. She allows them gut reactions and that makes them feel all the more real. These may not be characters that you want to befriend but they are fascinating.

The magic in this novel is always just out of reach. The reader, much like the main character, is left questioning whether the Graces are truly witches. The spells, and magic used is grounded in nature, and feels very common place. It adds a touch of realism to it and adds another layer to the novel. Combined with the gentle and more obscure effects the magic produces it becomes easy to question everything. The exploration of this magic, and the consequences of actions taken if it is indeed real, are the crux of this series, and I cannot wait for it to be explored more in further installments.

Another them is longing and desperation and the the lengths that it can drive someone to. The longing of the characters is palpable. The need is ferocious and all encompassing. The sometimes conflicting nature of these desires is a driving pulse of the story and one that is adeptly woven into the story. These characters do not have hopes and desires that are any different from the ones we ourselves have had. They just have a more dangerous way of dealing with these emotions.

The tone of the story reminded me of The Craft. It's message of what power can do if ran unchecked and the addictive quality that magic holds is something reflected within these pages. There is something addictive about the Graces themselves. Their looks, easy charm, and the mystery that surrounds them add to their allure. This surface allure is like the magic within these pages. It seems like something breathtaking and wonderful, until the messy reality sets in. The Graces are more than just their outside appearances and this truth is reflected within many other elements of the story.

The Graces is touched with the darkness of The Craft and the kind of grounded magic that makes you want to believe. Laure Eve has crafted a darkly seductive tale of magic, friendship and the allure of the unobtainable. I will breathlessly await the second novel in this addictive new series, and whatever Laure Eve writes after.

Just an egalley to share this week, but it is one that I am VERY excited about as I've loved the previous books in this adorable series. I am thrilled to be able to read the finale and cannot wait to see what Libby's own Hollywood ending entails.

A Night In With Grace Kelly by Lucy Holliday (goodreads)

A huge thank you to Edelweiss and Harper Collins for the chance to read and review this!

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Just a small Weekly Obsessions post this week.

BOOK

Cover of Dreamfall by Amy Plum (goodreads)

A creepy sounding premise deserves a creepy cover to go with and and Amy Plum's new book certainly delivers an unsettling cover.

It is a cover that is perfect for a novel that is described as part Flatliners, and part Nightmare On Elm Street. I cannot wait to read this but in the meantime I'll settle for enjoying this stunning cover.

OTHER

Beauty and the Beast Society6 Design

This is found in Evie Seo's Society6 shop. Her designs are always lovely but this one is simply stunning.

You can view more of her amazing design over at Society6, but I predict many will be purchasing something with this particular design on it.

What are you obsessed with this week?

American Horror Story: Roanoke - Chapter 6

This was teased as the episode in which everything changes. The episode with the big twist that turned what you thought you were watching into something else. Most people thought we were going behind the camera and in a way we were, and also were not.

The big twist? We're getting a glimpse at the behind the scenes stuff, but it is also so much more.

Before I get to recapping one of the stand out episodes of American Horror Story, I need to provide a cast list of sorts. We're meeting the actors who played Shelby, Matt, Lee, etc in the 'documentary' and it could make for a complicated recap. Having a cast list will ensure anyone reading this can reference who is who at anytime.

The Cast

Shelby Miller  -- Lily Rabe
Matt Miller -- Andre Holland
Lee Harris  -- Adina Porter
Audrey Tindall (who played Shelby in the show) -- Sarah Paulson
Dominic Banks (who played Matt in the show) -- Cuba Gooding Jr
Monet Tumusiime (who played Lee in the show) -- Angela Bassett
Agnes Mary Winstead (who played The Butcher in show) -- Kathy Bates
Rory Monahan (who played Edward Mott in the show) -- Evan Peters

Okay, with that handy cast list out of the way, let's dive into what I felt was the most ambitious episode of American Horror Story to date.

After finishing up Matt and Shelby's tale of horror last week I knew the show would be going into a different direction.

We open with a text screen (black screen with white wording) letting us know that 'My Roanoke Nightmare' was a hit show. It beat out all the competition (including The Walking Dead) and the network was eager for a follow up series.

With this news, we meet the producer behind the camera. None other than Cheyenne Jackson who is playing Sidney James. Sidney is sick, morally questionable and kind of slimy (and by kind of I mean waaaaay slimy).

He is walking through the network office to a business meeting and tells his camera people to keep filming no matter what anyone says (including himself). The executives are less than thrilled to see the camera but Sidney is not backing down. He pitches his new idea - he wants to take the real people (aka Matt, Shelby, Lee) and the actors who played them back to the Roanoke house calling it 'Return To Roanoke: Three Days In Hell' as it'll be over the period of the blood moon. This whole pitch is a little meta with Sidney talking about the hit ratings, multiple Entertainment Weekly covers, and all the success the show has had. They could be talking about American Horror Story itself.

Naturally the executives are skeptical about him wanting to capture ghosts on camera. Sidney scoffs and says he wants to capture the cast's reaction to what they believe are ghosts. The executives also express concerns about the fact that a large part of the audience was not satisfied that Mason's murder was never solved, and many of them feel Lee got away with murder. They inquire if the house can even be obtained to shoot on location, to which Sidney replies that he owns it now. He purchased it from Matt and Shelby to shoot the reenactments. They also, smartly, question if Matt, Shelby and Lee will want to go back. Sidney obviously tells them what they want to hear because next thing we know he's walking out and telling his assistant that he has a 13 episode deal. She hisses that he'll have to give them back because Shelby is not interested.

Turns out Shelby is willing  to meet though and agrees to an interview. Her and Matt have separated. One of the biggest reasons was reliving everything they went through again for the show. Another reason is that Shelby had an affair with Dominic Banks (the actor who played Matt in the show ... aka Cuba Gooding Jr).

Her and Dominic were caught together by a tabloid type show and Matt was, understandably, not happy. I think that is a little bit of the pot calling the kettle black though because Matt did have sex with Scathach. As soon as the affair (or in Shelby's words a 'stupid weekend') is brought up Shelby wants to end the interview. She admits that she was lonely, and Matt was ignoring her so she settled for the cheap imitation. She agrees to do the show if Matt comes too. So she's legit doing this for her marriage and that's all. Good to know because I was wondering why she would go back there. She wants to be able to talk to Matt and work things out, and they can do that if they are locked up together in the house. Sidney tells her that the fans just want her and Matt to have a happy ending. Before she agrees to be on the show again she makes him promise that Dominic will not be there. Sidney promises but is obviously a lying liar because we find out that Dominic is already signed.

Set up has begun on the house and we see that Sidney is not taking anything to chance. He's had his team set up 'fake' scares (exploding sinks, windows that explode, cabinets that open by themselves, and a fireplace that ignites on its own). Sidney's assistant, Diana, is less than impressed with this. She calls Sidney out on his fake scare nonsense and stresses that the first season was so popular because it felt real. Sidney does not care about real. He cares about getting Lee to admit she killed Mason. He figures if there is enough stress and pressure that she'll confess.

Sidney has a fit when the production trailers arrive because he wants nothing to interfere with the setting but his tantrum is interrupted by another crew member who calls him to come see something. The 'something' is a bunch of baby pigs left in a circle and covered in blood. Charming. They, at first, think it is the Polks but nobody has seen them, and nobody on the crew put the piglets there. *shudder*

We cut to Sidney interviewing Agnes (who played The Butcher in the show) about her life since the show has ended. Agnes seems lovely, and very sweet at first. It's revealed, however, that she had a mental breakdown after the show finished shooting. She chased people around downtown Hollywood with a cleaver as if she was really The Butcher (she also stole props from the show, including the pig's head). She claims she has gotten help and is on medication now. Sidney, however, wants none of it as he thinks she left the piglets for them. He serves her with a restraining order and tells her to stay away from the set. He explains that they only want 'real people' this time, prompting Agnes to quip "I am real". Sidney firmly tells her again that she'll never be on the show and leaves. Agnes immediately reacts by chasing them out and screaming at them in the accent she used as The Butcher. Diana asks if Sidney thinks the retraining order will keep her away to which Sidney quips that he hopes not. You are slimy, Sidney (but I love it).

Lee, being interviewed by ENews, admits she is doing to the show to clear her name. She knows what everyone is saying but she never killed her husband. Sidney happens to be watching the interview and inquires if they can be held responsible if Lee kills anyone else since they know she's guilty. He is assured by a lawyer that the liability clause on the contracts covers them. The lawyer is more concerned about Monet Tumusiime (who played Lee in the show). She is an alcoholic who has been in and out of rehab. This fact has been made clear to all involved in the show and therefore they cannot give her anything to drink. That would be worse for them than if Lee kills everyone, apparently. Sidney is not happy because 'alcohol is the secret sauce of reality shows' but the lawyer assures him that if Monet is an alcoholic she'll find something to drink without their help.

While this is going on they get a call that something bad has happened on the set. They rush over to find that one of the crew has decapitated themselves with a chainsaw. How does that even work? Gross. Gross. Gross. The incident is ruled an accident and it is left up to Sidney if they stop production (even just for the day for the crew) or if they continue. Sidney says they are going to proceed as if nothing has happened. Seriously, Sidney is pretty awful. Diana has had enough of this, and she's convinced this is the start of bad things happening on the set. She is obviously a believer and decides to take off. She quits basically. She speeds out of there in her car and uses her cell phone to make her own video before Sidney can make her look like 'a crazy bitch'. Diana sees what looks like the real Butcher (aka not Agnes) but decides she doesn't care to stop to find out who she is. Diana is smart. Sadly for Diana, however, just as she begins to drive away again the pigman grabs her from the backseat of the car. We're told by on screen text that the camera phone footage was found three months later, but Diana's body has never been found. Rest in peace, Diana. You were the voice of reason.

Next, we're introduced to Audrey Tindle who played Shelby on the show. She's British and lovely. We see that her and Rory (who played Edward Mott on the show) fell in love. There was a cute scene of him flirting with her and her being all flummoxed because he was flirting with her. Super cute. They also have a big announcement to make ...

THEY GOT MARRIED!! They are all kinds of adorable. I ship it.

Rory, it turns out, is a bit of an obnoxious frat boy type. Audrey does not seem to mind though. She's landed herself a hot, younger man who she cannot keep her hands off of (and he cannot keep his hands off her). The subtext that she puts up with his annoyingness because of said hotness and the good sex is definitely there. You go, Audrey. Get it, girl. During one of their makeout sessions Rory gets a call do to a screen test back in Hollywood. Audrey express that she has no doubts and trusts Rory to be on set for months at a time without her (with her expression obviously expressing doubts that he'll remain faithful). They go down to wait for Sidney so Rory can tell him that he's leaving. Rory catches something walking by the window (he's recording everything on his cell phone). They realize it is Agnes who smashes the window with her cleaver. In the commotion Shelby and Monet arrive. Audrey explains that Agnes has been torturing her in particular because she wants to steal the Saturn Award that Audrey won.

Sidney comes in telling them that he searched the grounds with no sign of Agnes. Audrey immediately clutches Rory and says she doesn't want to stay. He calms her and Shelby looks at them wistfully. She congratulates them on their marriage. This is when Matt and Lee arrive to the house. Neither are happy to see Shelby and there is a lot of tension.

Sidney confiscates their phones and gives them special phones that only allow for the camera to work. He wants them to film everything they see and do for the next three days (which will please Rory who does that already). He tells them that the fans want to see their side of things as they fell in love with the characters on the show.

Rory is quick to point out that they fell in love with Edward, too. Haha.

Sidney tries to assign bedroom assignments. He attempts to put Shelby and Matt in a room together and Matt is like 'I'll sleep in the basement, thanks'. Lee snaps and goes off on Shelby. Lee calls her out on calling the police, and everything just spirals from there. Lee, Shelby and Matt storm out and the actors treat it all like a big joke. Laughing and making jokes about it all (including the story the Miller's told of their time at the house).

Matt walks in as they are discussing this and asks when they came to do the reenactments. They admit it was summer. Matt tells them to look outside the window and points out that the blood moon is coming (aka, shit is about to get real).

Rory being Rory has to make a joke even as Matt is extremely serious. These actors have no clue what is coming for them.

At this point we're let in on the real twist of the season. The big reveal and it changes EVERYTHING about this season and what we're going to be watching for the next 4 episodes.

EXCEPT FOR ONE?! AHHHH! So we're going to be attempting to figure out the lone survivor for the next few episodes. This adds higher stakes than we've previously had. This also tells us that we're not watching current events unfold like I initially thought. We're watching the footage that was found as the show never actually aired.

Audrey and Rory are making out in the hot tub (with Rory filming as always) and she decides to go in to have a shower. Rory tells her that he'll join her in a minute.

Meanwhile we see Monet take a bottle of vodka out of her suitcase and begin drinking. No surprise there. It appears Monet and Lee have lots in common. Lee walks from her room to the kitchen and we see a burnt man walk by the camera behind her! She goes in the kitchen to cook and while she's distracted Shelby sneaks downstairs to talk to Matt. She attempts to convince him to leave the house with her. She wants to take off together, especially when he professes concerns about being back there. She almost convinces him until Dominic shows up at the door. Matt gets angry and attacks Dominic. All the noise from their fight brings Rory inside who breaks up the fight with the girls (and allows Evan Peters fangirls to be thankful for the shirtless scene and overall heroics their favourite gets to display). Shelby is pissed that Sidney lied. 'Fuck you, Sidney' is uttered by more than one character during this episode so that should tell you everything.

While all this is going on, Audrey gets out of the tub only to see the pigman in the bathroom mirror. She screams which sends Rory running. Audrey thinks it is someone Sidney hired to scare them and Rory is not having it. He passes his girl off to Dominic to take care of while he runs upstairs to catch the guy. He searches everywhere in the room and finds nobody. He is about to leave the room when he is attacked by the 'real' serial killer nurse sisters. They stab him multiple times and we have our first victim from the group. Poor fans of Evan Peters. They got him for two episodes before he died. I have a theory though that murder house rules apply and we'll be seeing Rory again.

Downstairs, Matt realizes something is different now. The word 'Murde' is no longer missing a letter.

because 'R is for Rory' as Matt points out to the group. The murder sisters have now finished their macabre tableau.

We end our episode here with plenty of excitement for next week. I have heard that both Finn Wittrock and Taissa Farmiga will be appearing on the show. My guess? Finn is playing the 'real' Edward Mott and Tassia is playing the real Scathach because we have not seen the real counterparts to either of those characters and I anticipate we will. Matt Bomer is also set to make an appearance and I'll place my bets on him being the 'real' Ambrose.

Ryan Murphy also revealed that Scathach is the first supreme. This is exciting because it ties this series to Coven BUT annoys me too. PUT IT IN THE SHOW, Ryan. If it is not in cannon than it never happened. Hopefully it is addressed on the show at some point.

This was an ambitious, twisty, fun episode of American Horror Story. One that made my investment in this season even stronger. I am delighted by both Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters' performances and cannot wait to see who the last one standing is. Anyone else totally okay if Sidney bites it?

Until next week .... don't make jokes about the blood moon. It leads to bad things. Ask Rory.

Waiting On Wed .... The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is The Gentleman's Guide To Vice And Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.

But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.

Witty, romantic, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is a sumptuous romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.
I love Eurotrip stories and this happens to sound like the best Eurotrip story ever. Pair this amazing sounding synopsis with that very swoony cover and you have an instantaneous "OMG! NEED IT NOW" reaction from pretty much everyone.

The wait for this is going to be rough though because it doesn't come out until June of next year. Join me in pining for Monty and Percy's story. We'll create a support group or something.

**spoilers for The Witch Hunter**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
“I think, in time, you’ll either be my greatest mistake or my greatest victory.”

Former witch hunter Elizabeth Grey is hiding within the magically protected village of Harrow, evading the price put on her head by Lord Blackwell, the usurper king of Anglia. Their last encounter left Blackwell ruined, but his thirst for power grows stronger every day. He’s readying for a war against those who would resist his rule—namely Elizabeth and the witches and wizards she now calls her allies.

Having lost her stigma, a magical source of protection and healing, Elizabeth’s strength is tested both physically and emotionally. War always means sacrifice, and as the lines between good and evil blur once more, Elizabeth must decide just how far she’ll go to save those she loves.
The Witch Hunter offered up a more quiet, historical feeling fantasy novel. I anticipated more of the same with its sequel. Instead, The King Slayer, offered a tension filled, action packed, blood drenched sequel that manages to retain all of what you loved about the first and more.

The title of this novel, much like the first, is a straight forward label for the main character. Elizabeth intends on being a king slayer. This sets up the plot of this novel, and much of Elizabeth's motivations. This sequel is filled with more political intrigue, strategic maneuvering and thrilling battle sequences. Anyone who wanted more action from the first novel will find that within these pages. These scenes, however, progress the story in very real ways. The story, including the battle sequences, is very character driven. The characters are all given their own motivations, and this ensures a complex set up leading into the final confrontation. Secret plans, double crosses, and hidden agendas all serve to make this novel a gripping one from start to finish.

Elizabeth is strong in her own way. She is weaker, physically at least, as she no longer has her stigma that there is a strength of character that shines through. She is willing to sacrifice everything, including her life, for those she cares about. She's an impressive heroine and one who remains steadfast when her entire life has been shifted. She's the type of character that you effortlessly care about simply because of her tenacity and inner strength.

The romance was one of my favourite parts of the book. It plays a quieter part of the story, but is also vital. It's not showy or filled with bold declarations but there is a underlying certainty that both of them would do anything for the other. It is not an easy romance. There are times where it is messy and intense. There are plenty of trials that they face but the relationship itself is one of the bright spots in the novel.

There is plenty of bloodshed in this, possible, finale. Virginia Boecker ensures that we don't feel relaxed within the story. Everyone is in danger, and the threat is very well. It ensures a taunt tension that only tightens as the ending approaches. Nobody leaves this novel unscathed and only ensures to create a feeling of high risk and consequences. It's the type of story that surprises you, makes your heart skip a beat, and at times leaves you on edge because you've come to care about these characters.

A satisfying ending to this story with enough of a opening for Elizabeth's story to continue if Virginia Boecker is so inclined. This is a story of consequences and actions. It is a story of coming to terms with having your world turned upside down, and the lengths someone will go to out of a feeling of responsibility and love. It is also a story of forging your own path to happiness and grabbing it for yourself. I am sure that I am not alone in waiting eagerly for whatever Virginia Boecker writes next.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Damaged. Deceptive. Dangerous. Darling. Are they labels or a warning? The answer could cost Sera everything.

Murder, justice, and revenge were so not a part of the plan when Sera set out on her senior camping trip. After all, hiking through the woods is supposed to be safe and uneventful.

Then one morning the group wakes up groggy, confused, and with words scrawled on their wrists: Damaged. Deceptive. Dangerous. Darling. Their supplies? Destroyed. Half their group? Gone. Their chaperone? Unconscious. Worst of all, they find four dolls acting out a murder—dolls dressed just like them.

Suddenly it's clear; they're being hunted. And with the only positive word on her wrist, Sera falls under suspicion…
One Was Lost is what you would get if The Breakfast Club were to be mixed with a horror movie. A group of teens who could not be more different end up being stalked on the woods. The premise immediately caught my attention and while this is book has a strong setting and atmosphere, I found myself not connecting with the characters and therefore the story.

The setting of this novel is well crafted. The claustrophobic feeling of the woods enclosing you is easily felt by the reader, along with the isolation. It is easy to see how terrifying and unsettling this would be and it ensured that I was in no hurry to go camping in the woods. There is something about being so secluded that can be peaceful and unsettling at the same time and this is captured with these pages. It is the strongest element of the story and it really helped create the perfect atmosphere for the plot of this story.

The characters, particularly the ones who get branded, are engaging enough to hold our interest and sympathy for the duration of the novel. We're given enough to ensure that these are not one dimensional characters. The author gives them each a bit of backstory, and they each have their own issues. Outside of the main group, the other characters are more of a footnote in the story due to the limited time we get to spend with them. One of the stronger elements of the characterization is that each of them is a plausible suspect for what is going on. That creates a stronger mystery which does unravel with a few interesting twists and turns to the story.

There is a good build up and tension that is steady throughout the novel. The pacing is fairly even until the end of the novel. Some of that tension is lost towards the ending, at least for me. This is where the story did not work for me. The latter half of the novel, and the motivation of the person responsible for the terrifying events felt uneven and rushed. We don't get much insight into who they are, and while we are given a why to wrap a bow around the story, it feels unfinished in some way. It felt like there should be more expansion on the events to really take the story to the next level. All of the characters did not feel as developed as I would have liked, and I wish the author had made this book a little longer in order to do so. The first half is great at creating the atmosphere that you want the ending to pack an ending that is equally satisfying and it just didn't quite come together for me in this case.

A read for those who prefer their chills and thrills without a paranormal twist. This is a book that will pair nicely with the autumn season and holds a lot of atmosphere. While I didn't love everything within these pages I do think it's a fun read that I predict many will enjoy.

Lots of exciting things arrived in my mailbox this week.

First up, my pre-order goodies from Bloomsbury for the Sarah J Maas books that were released recently. I love the notebook and the colouring pencils are a great idea!

Next up is a thank you gift from Raincoast Books for taking part in the Heartless blog tour! Check back later for more details on that tour and my stop!

Seriously, this mug is my new favourite. I love it immensely. A huge thank you to Raincoast Books (especially Melissa) for sending this along.

Lastly, I was looking for something to store my lipstick in and once I saw this I HAD to have it. It matches my Peter Pan one and is pretty much perfect for me.

What bookish items made their way into your mailbox this week?

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

American Horror Story: Roanoke - Chapter 5

Fangirls of Evan Peters can rejoice because their favourite FINALLY made his season six debut in this week's episode. His story line, in my opinion, was well worth the wait. It may, in fact, be the best part of this entire season.

Evan Peters' character ties directly back to the history of the house. Right to the beginning of its history in fact. Evan is not playing the pigman. He is also not the interviewer behind the scenes of this 'documentary'. Evan is, in fact, playing none other than Edward Mott ... at least in the dramatic reenactments. You may recall that we found out Edward Mott built the house and was the first person to go missing. He also happens to be the ancestor to Dandy Mott (who we met in season four/Freakshow).

We begin the episode with a history lesson. A historian is being interviewed and she is recounting what exactly happened to Edward. Edward was a rich art collector. The historian details that he had severe social anxiety which lead to him purchasing the land and building the house of horrors. The construction of the house was plagued with curious incidents and odd stories of seeing things, and items being moved.

We also learn that Edward left his wife and heir behind to be with his art ....

and his lover, Guinness (who also happens to be his servant)

There is something hot about the way Edward grabs his shirt to pull him in for a kiss. Just saying.

One make out session in a tub later, we begin to see how truly eccentric Edward is. It is not hard to see how Dandy could have come from this family line. Not at all. There is a madness that is just barely below the surface with Edward.

We quickly see that things began to go very wrong for Edward. First his beloved art was destroyed which made him VERY sad and angry. The servants are rounded up and he demands to know which one of them has done this. He screams and throws a temper tantrum There is a bit of Finn Wittrock's performance as Dandy in Evan Peters' Edward. I am instantly reminded of Dandy's 'I hate you, I hate you, I hate you' speech. It is reminiscent of a petulant child throwing a tantrum. After he smacks one servant across the face another tries to tell him that she saw a 'white woman and a young man' outside the house just before he screamed when finding the paintings. He accuses her of lying ('lies, lies, lies' he screams) and rounds all the servants up and puts them into the cellar like area that Elias eventually camps out in. He locks them in as punishment much to Guinness' dismay. Edward, however, will not be reasoned with or judged. He tells Guinness that he is nothing more than a servant (even if Edward does enjoy his tongue). The poor guy leaves insulted and Edward throws another tantrum yelling after him to not show is face again that night or Edward would kill him. Dandy definitely came from this family line.

Later that night while Edward tried to sleep he is attacked in his bed by the members of the colony. Edward is dragged out while screaming for them to let him go and that they are trespassing on his land. Tomasyn does her usual monologue that she owns the land and his blood will consecrate it (blah, blah, blah). They impale Edward with a very large stake and use it to put him into the fire. Guinness is the one who told people about what happened that night. He had run off during all of this and ended up in jail for killing Edward as nobody believed his story. Guinness also never told anyone about the servants who were locked up resulting in their deaths. We learn that the house remained in the Mott family trust for years thanks to the family money. The house went up for sale when the Mott family line ended when the last Mott died 1952 (Dandy shout out!). Madness definitely runs in this family.

Now that we've had a full backstory for what happened to Mr Mott, we now rejoin Matt and Shelby on the worst night of their lives. We join them right where we left off with them having just witnessed poor Cricket's death. Ambrose does the 'our land, spill your blood' speech this time. Matt and Shelby decided to make some smart life decisions and make a plan to leave. He is going to distract the mob and Shelby is going to run with Flora to the car. How Matt is going to join them is a mystery but that is not the point. The point is they actually have a plan. Sadly, Flora is snatched away from Shelby before they even make it downstairs by something that looks a lot like the girl from the Ring movies. They chase after Flora and eventually she is let go by the creature. However, they are herded by the past victims of Tomasyn's into the centre room. They decide to go into the basement instead where they are greeted by Edward who offers to help them escape. He shows them the tunnel he had built so that he could remove his art in an emergency. The tunnels lead them away from the house. They realize who their saviour is and that he is not alive. Death has not help Edward hang on to any sanity he did have. He is apparently angry that all of these souls have joined him when he just wants solitude. That means that murder house rules apply to this house as well. Nobody who dies on the property can leave, so all of Tomasyn's victims are bound there. This has to be because of the ritual she did with Scathach.

The walk through the tunnel sounds less than fun with gross smells and walls so thick with insects that their movements makes it appear the walls are moving. No, thank you. However, it is a small price to pay for safety and smart of them to actually follow.

Shout out to the effects team for some of the effects used her. Whenever light is cast over ghost Edward's face this is what happens...

Creepy but kind of perfect. It was unmissable, even if it was a subtle effect.

After exiting the tunnel, Edward decides to be a douche and not lead them to the road. He just abandons them with no light, food, or supplies in the middle of the woods. His last words to them make it very clear that he expects they will die in the woods, away from him, and they also make it clear he views this as a kindness. He calls dying in peace a trophy and a prize.

Shelby and Matt's night quickly keeps getting worse as they find themselves at the Polk farm. The locals from the auction are still not happy about the whole house thing (turns out they were just trying to keep the land empty for The Butcher) but they are extra not happy that the kids were taken away thanks to Matt and Shelby. They are captured and brought into a workshop of sorts. They find out that Elias was taken by the Polk's and kept alive so they could use him for meat. Yup, gross does not even begin to cover it. 'Momma' is the one who cuts off the body parts. Elias begs to be killed (and Shebly is crying during the interview at the memory). 'Momma' Polk comes in (who is played by Francis Conroy). She attempts to offer them food which any sane person would not accept. 'Momma' tries it herself and determines the meat is tainted, so she kills Elias. Matt offers to sign over the house to them, but the Polks have other plans. Turns out that they made a deal with The Butcher. They would bring people for her to sacrifice and since Tomasyn really wants Matt and Shelby, the Polks are happy to deliver.

Meanwhile, we finally learn what was happening with Lee since she got taken by the police. The police questioned her for 48 hours. She finally demands they let her go. She stresses that she is not strong enough to have killed her husband the way he was killed. In the interview she mentions that if you always tell the truth you don't have to remember the lie. We still don't know where she was for that missing time, but whatever. She leaves the police office to discover a whole bunch of messages from Matt that are not very coherent.

After Matt, Shelby and Flora were put into the Polk's truck they realize they have to escape. They wait  for the perfect moment and after scuffle (and some gun shots) manage to escape. They run into the woods to hide, and Matt ignores a call from Lee who is worried enough at this point to ask an officer for a ride.

'Momma' finds them and is angry that one of her sons died during their escape. As punishment she is going to ensure they will not run away again. She takes a sledgehammer to Shelby's foot ensuring that Matt won't run and that Shelby can't. They put everyone in the back of the truck again and Matt and Shelby soak in every last minute together that they can. Matt is being a good husband (which he normally is) and offering comfort to her. It's actually rather sweet.

They arrive at the house and the colonists are still outside with a fire burning. Tomasyn offers her own version of condolences to 'Momma' Polk on the death of her son. As soon as the Polks drive away the colonists grab Flora and prepare to sacrifice her. Lee arrives at this point with basically the best timing ever (even if the cop who drove her turns around and drives away instead of helping). Tomasyn starts her usual spiel about blood, concentrating the land and etc. However, it appears many of the colonists have had enough of all of the killing. Ambrose in particular is entirely over it. He yells at his mother, hits her over the head and drags her into the fire. Edward Mott frees the Millers and tells them to escape. The pigman goes after Flora before they get a chance to even get up. Lee chooses this moment to run the pigman over with a car and yells for them to get in. Matt, Shelby and Flora get into the car and they all drive off to safety with Tomasyn emerging from the fire to run after them.

We learn that life after their experience has not been easy for them. Shelby especially has had it rough. She has nightmares of Tomasyn coming and killing her with her cleaver that wake her up at night in a panic. No matter what she's tried, nothing has helped. Poor, Shelby.

Now that the Miller family is safe, and their story fully told,  the question becomes what is next for the show. Episode six is rumoured to be a big episode for this season and there has been a big twist teased. My guess? Now that the 'interviewer' (who is, without a doubt, Cheyenne Jackson) has heard this horrific tale, does he want to go to the house himself? I could see them doing exactly that and it being a very bad decision. We'll have to wait until next week to find out for sure, but it seems very likely that this is the direction the story is headed.

See you next week when everything changes!
