Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOKS

Harry Potter short stories

As per Entertainment Weekly J.K. Rowling is gifting the Harry Potter fandom with TWELVE short stories for Christmas. As per the article, at least one of them will feature Draco Malfoy. I am SO there. Now if she'd only write a Marauders prequel...

You'll be able to read these stories starting December 12th on Pottermore.

OTHER

Lyric Print Art

I found these on some Buzzfeed list and checked out the Etsy store, Letters By Linds, that these are from. I LOVE them. They are amazing and I would totally hang one in my house.

I would use "Darling, I am a nightmare dressed like a daydream" I think. You can visit this amazing Etsy shop and she does custom orders.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

A few borrowed books this week and some ebooks for review!

Endless by Jessica Shirvington (Goodreads)
Incarnate by Jodi Meadows (Goodreads)
Onyx by Jennifer L Armentrout (Goodreads)

I also snagged this via ebook after the news broke

The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (AKA JK ROWLING!!!!) (Goodreads)

So if you missed the news JK Rowling has written a crime novel under a pen name that released in April of this year. It was announced late Saturday (or that's when I stumbled upon the news) that she is indeed the writer. I can't wait to read this.

I am also going to be part of the Endless blog tour. Super excited to read this as I've enjoyed the previous installments of this series. Huge thank you to Sourcebooks for the chance to review.

Big thank you to Ciara (from Lost At Midnight) for lending me Incarnate and Onyx. After Obsidian, I am dying to read Onyx and will hopefully be starting it soon.

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling

Publisher Website –  Little, Brown and Company
Publisher Social Media -  Twitter
Pages -503 pages
My Rating- 4/5
**Provided by publisher for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.
Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.
Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?
When it was announced that JK Rowling was going to release another book I, like most people, immediately freaked out. My thoughts quickly turned to what an adult novel by JK Rowling might be like. The Casual Vacancy is a unflinchingly real, sometimes darkly funny, and well written novel that showcases why JK Rowling is a true talent.

Those looking for magic and wizards might be disappointed, however this novel is one clearly written by Rowling. The writing is pitch perfect for the genre, and similarities in how the story unravels can be found in both. Rowling’s talent is that she can write and make us care. We cared about Harry, Hermoine and Ron, and ultimately we come to care about the town of Pagford, The Fields, and it’s residents.

The characters in this novel are fully fleshed out. They are achingly real, and raw. They are as deeply rich and complex as real people. People are flawed, and sometimes messy. Rowling’s ability to observe and recreate this in her novels so vividly stunned me. This story is one completely about the characters, rather than the plot.

Using the characters and plot Rowling is willing to shine an uncomfortable light on society. The reader will most likely identify with someone or something in the novel, admitted or not. I can see this novel making people squirm due to it’s unflinching honesty about people and the ways in which we hurt ourselves and others. Some readers may find it too grounded in the realities of life. This novel doesn't shy away from the dark aspects of life, just as it celebrates the things worth living for at the same time. A novel that deals with rape, drug use, child neglect, and yet also has gossip fueled housewives, declarations of love, and humour.

The writing is strongest when focusing on the teen aged characters. The wrenching portrayal of a teenager spiraling deeper into depression and self harm is especially effective.  Each of the teenagers stay with you long after you've read the final pages.

The ending, while very sad, is fitting. It shows that life moves on in the face of unbearable loss. The Casual Vacancy may present itself as a dark comedy but it really is a character driven look at society. The truth behind the notion that what goes on behind closed doors is hidden from the rest of society is examined. It’s these hidden truths that Rowling has put front and center by tearing off the curtains and allowing us to peek into the windows.

Lots of goodies in the mail this week! I truly felt spoiled with mail this week.

Weekly Obsessions....

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

J.K. Rowling to publish new book

My twitter feed pretty much exploded when the news was released. I may have let out a squeal while at work. I love that we know pretty much nothing other than a few basics and the world pretty much went crazy. I am excited to see how J.K. Rowling tackles an adult novel. I am thrilled it's coming out later THIS year.

the cover of Ten by Gretchen McNeil

How creepy is this cover? How awesome is it at the same time? I love the little tag line as well - Ten teens. Three days. One killer. Chills right?! The Goodreads synopsis sounds excellent as well!

cover of Glass Heart by Amy Garvey

I really enjoyed Cold Kiss. This is the stunning cover for the sequel. Seriously...LOVE! I bet the hardcover is going to be shiny and quite pretty. No synopsis is released yet, but you can add it on Goodreads.

Ann Aguirre new book trilogy

If you read Enclave (or read my review) perhaps you'll be as excited as I am. This trilogy is described as Doctor Faustus meets Mean Girls in this edgy paranormal revenge trilogy set in a dark world of secret societies, twisted bargains, and forbidden love.

The three books are called Mortal Beauty, Dire Charm and Dead Lovely. Super excited as it sounds amazing. The only downside? Waiting until 2014 when Mortal Beauty is released.

TV

Once Upon A Time

Alice in Wonderland is coming to Storybrooke! We are going to meet the Mad Hatter! They've also teased that we will find out who the Big Bad Wolf is, and that Belle will be back. This show really is amazing, and I am thrilled that we are getting the Alice in Wonderland characters. Still on my wishlist are the Peter Pan characters, and a certain mermaid!

MOVIE

The Hunger Games movie tickets

I have mine! Do you have yours? They are apparently selling out quickly. Super excited to watch this with one of my best friends, and my sister.

What are you obsessed with this week? Let me know in the comments.

Saying Goodbye to Harry.... It All Ends

Tonight at midnight I will be watching the final Harry Potter movie. It's been over a decade since the first Harry Potter movie was released in theatres. It's hard to believe that we will be saying goodbye. It feels more like a goodbye than when the books ended as there were still movies to look forward to.

I am posting this before the movie as I have a feeling I will be in no shape to tackle this after I've watched it.

This video is a a brief gimpse at some of the last days on the Harry Potter set....

Daniel Radcliffe standing on the chair giving his speech - *DIES*. I was a bawling mess after. The whole thing is bittersweet for us and you can tell it is for the cast as well. The shot of Daniel, Emma and Rupert hugging after Dan's speech is my favourite thing about the video. You can tell they became really close.

Here is an amazing video with a lot of the cast offering a one word description of their Harry Potter experience....

Rupert Grint kills me. He's adorable and hilarious. Emma Watson's "it's got to be magical doesn't it?" makes me tear up. I chuckled at Matthew Lewis' "it's alright" comment. This whole video made me weepy. I can't believe we are saying goodbye to so many beloved characters.

The books were such a huge thing to me. I would go to midnight release parties, drive all my friends (and co-workers) crazy with theories, and devour them so quickly that I didn't have anyone to talk about them with.

Thank you JK Rowling for providing us with an exquisite literary experience that will continue to encourge everyone to read for years to come. Thank you Harry for always being there to save the day. Thank you Daniel, Rupert and Emma for bringing to life the trio, and thank you to the entire cast and crew for some of my favourite movie magic moments.

Excuse me while I go cry.... haha

Female Characters that Rock…

I have noticed a trend that male characters in novels (YA novels in particular) get a lot of love. I myself have book crushes. I totally get it. Boys in books are hot.I felt that their female equivalents often get overlooked though. There are some amazing female characters out there totally worthy of having a girl crush on.

I sat down and decided to come up with a list of female characters that I felt broke the mould. Characters that made me want to stand up and cheer. Female characters that I felt had something more to offer. I just wanted to do my part to showcase some of these amazing, well written and developed characters that do not get enough attention.

I am going to include why I put them on this list. Not everyone will agree with me (of course) but I welcome hearing about the female characters you do admire and why!

Here are a few I could come up with (in no particular order) -

Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games Series) - I don’t think any list of this sort can be complete without her on it. She is not only physically tough and capable but mentally as well. She proves time and time again that she is no pawn to be used to further anyone’s agenda. Her cunning, and strength not only keep her family alive but help make her a formidable contender in the Hunger Games. I find her bond to her family just as impressive and a sign of her strength. I love that she isn’t all about boys either. The choice for her between Peeta and Gale was secondary. It was welcome and refreshing.

Hermoine Granger (Harry Potter Series) - I love J.K. Rowling for showing that girls who read can be sexy. Hermoine loves school and loves to read. She prides herself on being one of the best in her year. She wants to excel. I would have loved someone like her to be in the books I read while in Gr 8. There is so many other things I love about her though. She is loyal, level headed and quick to assist Harry whenever he needs it. I love that she doesn’t let her feelings for Ron take over and make her incapable of rational thinking or blind to the bigger picture. I like a girl who can stick up for herself and Hermoine does that fantastically.

Kate Beaumont Mercier (Die For Me) - Kate is just your average girl. She is someone I could see being friends with. She does do something that made me want to hug Amy Plum for creating her though - She doesn't immediately fall for Vincent. She doesn’t just declare her undying love for him the second they meet. In the YA Paranormal romance genre it is so common for the female character to be blindly in love with the vampire/werewolf/etc and to not even flinch when she finds out. This was a welcome and unique change. Vincent has to win Kate over. It felt more like what a sensible person would do and for this I love Kate. Kate also has a strength in her that is a quiet strength. The way she deals with her parents death and other obstacles is amazing to read.

Isabelle Lightwood (Mortal Instruments series) - Tough, sexy, and complex. Isabelle Lightwood is physically capable of protecting herself and other people who might need it. I love that she is protective of herself when it comes to the matters of heart. I like that she doesn’t “need” a boyfriend. She had this vulnerability that is under her tough exterior that you just can’t help but love. The love and respect she has for her family and friends is another thing I adore about her. Plus, any girl that can use a whip has my respect!

There are just a few of the girls that I think rock. What do you think? Which female characters make your list?

Trailers and Posters..

The trailer for Kelley Armstrong's new book The Gathering was released. I enjoyed her previous YA series so I am looking forward to reading this one.

It's pretty awesome and the end left me curious as to what happened!

They also released the trailer for Gayle Forman's Where She Went. I loved If I Stay and am looking forward to reading this one when it's released.

I am a huge Harry Potter fan. Love the series and the movies. The last movie(sniff)is coming out later this summer and they released an amazing poster for it.

Amazing right? I am so excited and yet sad for this movie to come out. It's going to be so bittersweet.
