Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Witches are real. They're descendants of the Olympian gods. And now, five teen witches gifted with elemental powers must fight to stop a war against the Titans.

When Nicole Cassidy moves from sunny Georgia to gloomy New England, the last thing she expects is to learn that her homeroom is a cover for a secret coven of witches. Even more surprisingly ... she's apparently a witch herself. Despite doubts about her newfound abilities, Nicole is welcomed into this ancient circle of witches and is bedazzled by their powers--and, to her dismay, by Blake--the school's notorious bad-boy.

Girls who get close to Blake wind up hurt. His girlfriend Danielle will do anything to keep them away, even if she must resort to using dark magic. But the chemistry between Blake and Nicole is undeniable, and despite wanting to protect Nicole from Danielle's wrath, he finds it impossible to keep his distance.

When the Olympian Comet shoots through the sky for the first time in three thousand years, Nicole, Blake, Danielle, and two others in their homeroom are gifted with mysterious powers over the elements. But the comet has another effect--it opens the portal to the prison world that has contained the Titans for centuries. After an ancient monster escapes and attacks Nicole and Blake, it's up to them and the others to follow the clues from a cryptic prophecy so that they can save their town ... and possibly the world.
Michelle Madow is quickly becoming an author whose novels I grab when I want a fun read. I know that her novels will be an entertaining, fast paced read.. Elementals continued this tradition. This mix of Greek and witch mythology, while not feeling entirely new,  is reminiscent of a CW television show complete with romance, action and beautiful teenagers.

This novel will instantly feel recognizable to those who have read a variety of YA novels. It utilizes the popular tropes that many use while combining them in a truly fun way. This has a blend of action, adventure, romance and mythology that works to create an incredibly addictive read. The familiar feeling made it easier to connect with the story and it's characters. It felt comfortable and because of that getting lost in the story was effortless.

Nicole is the fish out of water character who discovers that she holds special powers. She embodies a lot of traits that come along with this character trope. Michelle infuses her with enough personality to make her stand out on her own though. She is a nice blend of confident and unsure. Her natural abilities are explained in a believable way that are part of the plot.

The romance, as hinted in the synopsis, is a bit of a triangle. It also has some cheating involved in it. Nicole is conflicted about what is happening and feels guilty for every moment her and Blake spend together. There is a sort of destined feeling to Nicole and Blake's interactions, but I hope the romance is expanded in the following sequels. I want a little more insight into what draws them together, and not just because of looks. The problem with action heavy novels is that sometimes the development of relationships like this is not as prevalent. I hope to see a deepening of the connections between the characters going forward, romantic or otherwise.

Danielle, so far, has been a pretty one dimensional character. The classic mean girl who hates girls who even dare to just look at her boyfriend. However, Michelle took this type of character in her Secret Diamond Sisters series and added layers to her. She made her more complex and something other than just the cliché mean girl. I anticipate that Danielle will be given the same treatment.

With much of the story set up being done in this first novel, I hope the characters are the focus of the second. We're comfortable with the world they inhabit and the magic that flows through them, but I want to know more about them. This novel felt like the start of a much bigger story, and I eager to see where it takes these characters next.

A story that weaves witch mythology and Greek mythology with some tropes we all know well. It's a promising start to what could be a fun, entertaining series. I look forward to seeing how the characters and plot progress in the upcoming sequels.

The final cover showcases Peyton and matches the first two perfectly while capturing exactly what I imagined Peyton would look like. It's totally my favourite out of the three (if I had to pick).

It keeps that fun, flirty vibe and plenty of Las Vegas appeal. I cannot wait to read this one and find out what is next for the Diamond sisters.

Here is a sneak peek of a sexy scene from the book to entice you! Just remember though... “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas ... but that doesn’t matter when you live there.”

PEYTON DIAMOND SNEAK PEEK

“Which lovely Diamond sister are you?” he asked, his lips close to her ear.

“How do you know I’m one of the Diamond sisters?” She leaned back and looked up at him, trying to sound mysterious. Word sure did travel fast around here.

“Lucky guess.” He ran his thumb down her back, and she shivered at his touch. “Actually, I saw you walk in with Adrian earlier. Sort of gave it away.”

“Oh,” she said, although she was happy he’d noticed her. “I’m Peyton.”

“Peyton,” he repeated. “Pretty name. I like it.”

“Thanks.” She had never had anyone tell her that before. “And you are...”

“Oliver,” he answered with a haughtiness that made her think he assumed most people already knew his name. “Oliver Prescott.”

“Nice to meet you, Oliver,” she said, smiling seductively up at him—the same look she’d given Jackson earlier. But unlike with Jackson, it made Oliver move closer to her. The music changed to a remix of a popular song, and she wound her arms tighter around him. “Your girlfriend didn’t look happy that you left her to dance with me.”

“Girlfriend?” Oliver laughed. “Madison’s just a friend.”

“Good.” Peyton had dated many guys, but the ones with girlfriends were out of the question. She refused to risk getting hurt, or make an enemy in the wrong place.

“Do I seem like the type of guy who would tell my girlfriend to disappear while I danced with another girl?” He looked amused, but Peyton believed he was serious.

“Going off the few minutes I’ve known you...?” She quirked an eyebrow. “It never hurts to check. But I believe you.”

“And you would trust me that easily?”

“Mainly because Madison doesn’t look like the sort of girl who would allow a boyfriend of hers to do that,” Peyton said.

“You sure got that right.” He trailed a finger down her arm, like he was taking in every inch of her. Peyton reveled in his touch. The back of his neck was moist with sweat, and she ran her fingers through his hair, enjoying the silkiness of it.

“Do you live in the hotel, too?” she asked.

“Not at the Diamond,” he replied. “I live across the street at the Gates. My father owns it, along with a few other hotels on the Strip.”

“Does that mean your family is in competition with mine?”

“Not in competition, he said, pulling her closer. “But our father’s businesses aren’t important right now.”

“No,” Peyton breathed. “They’re not.”

All-access doesn't mean no problems.

But making a place for themselves at their exclusive new Las Vegas private school is throwing them any number of gold-plated curves. Savannah's YouTube stardom turns into a Sweet Sixteen reality show extravaganza—with complimentary enemies on the side. Sisterhood, first crushes, and scandalous secrets explode in book two of Michelle Madow's riveting series, The Secret Diamond Sisters.
The Secret Diamond Sisters was a fun, flirty, drama filled read that I enjoy immensely. Diamonds in the Rough is everything I loved about the first novel, only more. Everything was heightened. The romances were steamier. The secrets even more devastating. The consequences even more crushing. I've mentioned previously that this novel is begging to be made into a CW television show, and this sequel cemented that feeling.

This series is blending a city known for it's decadence with the type of drama that makes CW television shows so addictive. The fast paced speed in which bombshells are dropped and secrets unravel will leave a feeling of whiplash. Each time you think there is nothing else to be unveiled, Michelle tosses another element into the mix. She tortures her characters without mercy and the readers are the ones to benefit.

The first book was, I felt, much lighter in tone. The Diamond sisters were dealing with huge issues, but it came off as more fun and flirty. This book, however, is like a wrecking ball. Plenty of secrets are revealed by the end of this novel. Earth shattering ones that will forever change the people involved. This novel's overall tone is one of changes. Quite a few of the characters experience growth, and surprisingly it's the ones you may not expect. Prepare to have everything you thought you knew about these characters to be turned upside down. I found myself sympathizing with characters I didn't expect to, swooning over guys who I didn't like the first time around, and disliking some of the decisions other characters made. It's a wild roller coaster ride, and none of the characters end the novel untouched by the events that take place.

The romances are heating up and each of the Diamond sisters has a guy or two that has caught their attention. None of the potential romances have gone the way I unexpected them to. The romance aspect of the story is one of the strongest elements in Michelle's writing. She creates unhurried, realistic connections. It never feels like an insta-love situation or that things are progressing too quickly.

The fallout from this book will still be felt into the final installment. There is a rather delightful, if cutesy, aspect to Savannah's storyline that I am praying continues to be explored. The impact of one of this novel's biggest reveals has yet to be truly explored, and that has set up the third novel to be quite the scandal filled installment.

Boasting juicier secrets, more extravagant luxury, and higher stakes consequences, Michelle Madow has delivered a sequel that will truly satisfy fans of this series. They will eagerly devour this in one sitting and breathlessly wait for the final book. Michelle Madow has shown that in her world of decadently sinful Las Vegas nothing is as it seems, and all bets are off.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

There was plenty of squealing at my mailbox this week. Two books that I've been anticipating made their way to me this week. One is a retelling of a classic tale, and the other is the second novel in a sexy, scandal filled series.

Diamonds In The Rough by Michelle Madow (goodreads)
Winterspell by Claire Legrand (goodreads)

A huge thank you to Harlequin Teen and Simon and Schuster USA for these two books.

I also was approved for an e-galley of an amazing collection of short stories. All these amazing authors, and edited by Stephanie Perkins?! Obviously, I needed it! I am really excited to read it, and I hope to get to it as soon as the weather gets a little cooler. It feels like a book to enjoy with some hot chocolate.

My True Love Gave To My By Various (goodreads)

A big thank you to St Martin's Griffin, and Netgalley for the chance to review this.

What books made their way into your mailbox this week?

Happy weekend, and happy reading!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week. Some amazing movie trailers this week!

BOOK

Cover of Diamonds In The Rough by Michelle Madow

I ended up really liking The Secret Diamond Sisters and I am very excited to get my hands on this sequel. I love the cover.  It's totally fun and captures both the scandalous and sexy qualities of the novel.

TV

Bates Motel

Three episodes away from the end of season 2 and I am HOOKED. Freddie Highmore is doing amazing things with the complexity of Norman Bates. Vera Farmiga adds layers to Norma that I didn't think would be there. The show, and the cast, are only getting better with each episode. I am both anticipating and dreading the finale. They normally have a killer twist/cliffhanger, but the wait for season three is going to be excruciating.

OTHER

Trailer for Gone Girl

Gone Girl is one of the top books I've read since I've started blogging. The debate over the ending aside, the twist in this book is one of the single best twists I've EVER read. Ben Affleck (whom I didn't like for Nick when he was first cast) really surprised me in the trailer. The scene where he smiles while getting his picture taken next to Amy's missing poster? That IS Nick. It's a solid trailer, and shows promise as I can already pick up a few things from the book that I hoped would make it into the movie.

Trailer for If I Stay

The second they started playing Say Something I started crying. It's beautiful, and perfect. It already has me feeling the emotions I had while reading the book. Adam's line "I'm still here and I'm crazy in love with you. Please...stay'. Ugly crying right there. I have a feeling I'll be a mess while watching this one in theatres.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Savannah. Courtney. Peyton.

The three sisters grew up not knowing their father and not quite catching a break. But it looks like their luck is about to change when they find out the secret identity of their long-lost dad—a billionaire Las Vegas hotel owner who wants them to come live in a gorgeous penthouse hotel suite. Suddenly the Strip's most exclusive clubs are all-access, and with an unlimited credit card each, it should be easier than ever to fit right in. But in a town full of secrets and illusion, fitting in is nothing compared to finding out the truth about their past
Do you miss Gossip Girl? If so, meet The Diamond Sisters. This is a fun decadent look at life on the Las Vegas strip when it's filled with money, scandalous secrets, and lies. It's said that what happens in Vegas stays there, but like the book reminds us - this doesn't happen when you live there.

The point of view rotates between the three sisters, and surprisingly, mean girl-ish Madison. I felt that each girl had a distinct personality, so it was quite easy to distinguish who was narrating the chapter. Savannah who is sheltered, protected and a little naive. Peyton who headstrong, angry and a wild child. Courtney is the 'good girl' who is always responsible and rather spend her time studying (or reading a book). Madison oozes venom and is a classic high school mean girl (so basically she's delightfully awful). It was fun getting to follow these girls throughout the story and see how each progressed.

The sisters each react quite differently to being thrust into this new lifestyle. Peyton wants nothing to do with their father, and isn't afraid to show it. Savannah is thrilled, and can't wait to become part of their new world. Courtney is more cautious, but willing to hear their father out before deciding anything. I could I could relate to Courtney the most (the studious book worm who maybe wants to go a bit wild) but found myself caring about all three sisters. Each of the sister's get into their own brand of trouble, and each decision they make remains totally in character for them.

The secrets begin to unravel and it becomes clear that each potential half truth only leads to more secrets. The plot itself is light, and filled with the outlandish twists and turns you would expect. It's part of the fun, and it fits completely within the world the author has developed. It becomes evident though, that the characters are the focal point of the novel. The author effortlessly makes you care about these girls, and what happens to them. Through out the twists, turns, drama, and romance, it's the characters that keep the book grounded, and engaging.

This setting of Las Vegas is exactly what I've been looking for from a book set in this city. It's the lavish, indulgent, lifestyle that is the stuff of day dreams for most people. The book also captures the more normal side to Vegas however. We get ultra exclusive nightclubs, and black American Express cards, right along side rousing karaoke bars. It ignited my travel and had my day dreaming about my own trip to Las Vegas. It made me fall not only in love with the characters, but Vegas itself.

A sinfully decadent setting, a Gossip Girl vibe, and enough secrets to keep you burning through the pages. The Secret Diamond Sisters is flirty, fun, and tailor made to be a show on the CW network. It'll may even make you eager to have your own scandal filled adventure on the Las Vegas strip!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

The cover of The Secret Diamond Sisters by Michelle Madow (Goodreads)

I have been dying for a fun, sexy novel set in Las Vegas. I've read a few and they haven't lived up expectations. I think this cover is super fun, and I HOPE that it's finally a Vegas set novel that conjures up The Strip perfectly.

The cover of Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige (Goodreads)

This novel's synopsis has left me pining for this novel in the WORST way. The cover is fun, not what I expected at all though. This one is HIGH on my wishlist, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

The cover of The One by Kiera Cass (Goodreads)

Eeeep! So immediately I thought 'AMERICA IS IN A WEDDING DRESS'. This may not be true, but the cover certainly wants us to THINK that. I am pretty excited to find out how this story ends, and for the more intriguing aspects of this story to take centre stage.

TV/MOVIE

Once Upon A Time Season 3 Premiere

THIS SUNDAY! Peter Pan! Tinkerbell! Ariel! Neverland! I am beyond excited for this season. It's no secret that I LOVE Peter Pan. It's been a favourite since I was a kid, and I am loving the bits I've seen of THIS version.

So what are you obsessed with this week?
