Best of 2013

Top Ten Books of 2013!

We're getting close to the end of the year, and I am officially taking it easy on the blog for the rest of 2013. Kicking off Christmas week I am going to put up my list of the top ten books I read in 2013. This was hard, really hard.

There is a mix of YA, and adult on here. It was a good year for both genres. I've indicated which titles are adult. Each of the books link to my review (if posted).

Katherine Longshore brings Anne Boleyn to life effortlessly. Her voice stayed in my head long after I had finished the novel, and Katherine's brilliant writing only improves with each novel. She creates a sympathetic, yet still driven portrait of the doomed queen. Fans of Anne Boleyn will relish this one, and newcomers to the Tudor court will find much to enjoy as well. It's sexy, scandalous, and heart pulling.

A mind warp at it's finest. You'll feel like you're in one of Cordova's 'night films yourself as you question everything. This novel dares to question belief, perception, and reality. Does believing in something make it reality? It's thought provoking ending will make you want to read the novel again.

Victoria Schwab blurs the lines between good, evil and creates something in between. Vicious wants to make you question mortality, and your definition of the 'anti-hero'. Needless to say, she succeeds. Vicious is not only thrilling, taunt, and addictive, but it's brilliantly written. I, personally, was left wanting to beg her for more. You won't soon forget Victor or Eli after reading this one.

An intoxicating duology that ends with a fantastic finale. Bethany has created a world that is rich, characters that will immediately grab you, and has ended the series in the most fitting way. It's decadent, dangerous, and yet there is a little light of hope, which is exactly the message of her story. Araby grows leaps and bounds and remains one of my favourite female protagonists.

After finishing Tampa I felt two things - shock and disbelief. A provocative, controversial novel whose main character, Celeste, is someone you will never forget. Alissa takes what could have been a disaster, and creates something thought provoking, and brilliantly written. It made me want to discuss it with everyone, but it also made me want to warn them (and I think that's exactly what Alissa was going for).

** Tampa is REALLY adult. It is not intended for the younger readers**

Another debut novelist who impressed me with her writing. The world building is fantastic, and Paige is a character I am going to love seeing evolve and change throughout the novel. An impressive set up to what appears to be an amazing series. If you're looking for the next series to get obsessed with, this just might be it.

7 Cress by Marissa Meyer

I don't want to say to much, as this one is not on shelves yet. I will say that I fell in love with Cress (both the book and the character). Marissa Meyer's third novel has set up what is going to be one spectacular finale. The writing is just as engaging as the previous novels, and the plot is tight. This is a series where you can tell the author has planned, and plotted and is weaving everything together. I am so excited to watch everyone fall in love with Cress once it's released, she's truly wonderful.

Willem may just be my favourite male voice. He's exactly what I imagined while reading Just One Day, except even more so. He's just as swoony, just as complicated, and just as infuriating as you would anticipate after reading Allyson's story. This novel completes her story in a way that you won't be able to imagine one without the other. They are two sides of the same coin, and Gayle's writing shines as she brings Willem to life.

I loved Born Wicked. It was everything I wanted out of a witch novel. Star Cursed only improved on an already fantastic story. Jessica Spotswood's writing is impressive, and her characters are rich. The stage is set for the installment to this series, and the stakes just keep getting higher. A heart ripping ending, mixed with delightful characters, made this one an easy choice for this life. If you haven't checked out this series - do it immediately.

I cried my way through a large portion of this novel. Leonard Peacock's head is not a pleasant place to be, but there is no denying that Leonard's story MUST be told. Matthew Quick creates sympathy in a character who, at first, may seem undeserving. As you unravel Leonard's secret you quickly come to feel his pain. Matthew Quick has creates a timeless story that will crush your heart, and yet give you a little ray of hope as well.

Any of these titles make your top ten this year? Will you be adding any to your reading list in 2014? Let me know in the comments (link me your top ten if you've posted yours!).

Night Film by Marisha Pessl

Night Film by Marisha Pessl
Release Date – August 20, 2013
Publisher Website -  Random House
Publisher Social Media -  Twitter
Pages -  624 pages
My Rating- 5/5
**obtained for review from publisher**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Brilliant, haunting, breathtakingly suspenseful, Night Film is a superb literary thriller by The New York Times bestselling author of the blockbuster debut Special Topics in Calamity Physics.

On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova—a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than thirty years.

For McGrath, another death connected to this seemingly cursed family dynasty seems more than just a coincidence. Though much has been written about Cordova’s dark and unsettling films, very little is known about the man himself.

Driven by revenge, curiosity, and a need for the truth, McGrath, with the aid of two strangers, is drawn deeper and deeper into Cordova’s eerie, hypnotic world.

The last time he got close to exposing the director, McGrath lost his marriage and his career. This time he might lose even more.

Night Film, the gorgeously written, spellbinding new novel by the dazzlingly inventive Marisha Pessl, will hold you in suspense until you turn the final page.
Soverign. Deadly. Perfect. These words that are the motto of Cordova's biggest fans could also describe Marisha Pessl's second novel. A novel that starts out unraveling the mystery behind a beautiful woman's death, and quickly leads you into the darkness. Perception is in the eye of the beholder, and the truth may not exist. It's a hard novel to review because so much of it is a spoiler. This experience is best enjoyed untainted, and I am going to aim to do just that with my review.

Marisha Pessl's writing is nearly flawless. The unraveling of this taunt, mind trippy thriller is kept a fever pitch, and as a result the 600+  pages fly by. The infusion of media throughout the novel immerses the reader into the story in a unique way. It makes the experience more authentic, and is cleverly done. This is a book that wants to wrap you in itself, and leave you in pieces on the other side. Marisha expertly maneuvers the reader through this in such a way that you become not only immersed, but obsessed.

Scott McGrath is a mess, and that's before the story even really starts. Obsession, perception, and faith flow through this novel, and it's a defining characteristic of it’s main character.  Scott acts as a mirror for the reader because he‘s just as desperate to uncover the truth. He becomes single minded in his pursuit of what he deems the truth behind Cordova, and Ashley's death. The mystery of the director captivates even more than the mystery of Ashley. It's not hard to see why the infamous, mysterious director has such a pull for his fanatics, and Scott himself.

Choices and perception haunt this novel. Faith, and what you believe are such strong forces. It's characters, and the reader, are forced to confront what it means to make a choice based upon something you believe in so fully. Does the way you perceive something validate the choices you make? Does believing something make it true? Scott, and likewise the reader have to struggle with this. It asks you to reconcile the belief that two (or more) realities can exist side by side. That for some their reality can be an absolute, even if different from the reality others can see. It's a novel that makes you question your stance on everything. It gets into your head, and messes with it in the most delicious way possible, because you end up begging it to.  It leaves you gasping, disoriented and sifting through the murkiness for the smallest grain of truth only to realize how futile that really is. It's like a rabbit hole that inexplicably leads nowhere.

The secondary characters are just as mystifying as the rest of the novel. Nora and Hopper are both the type of characters that are created for the movie screen. The novel reads like a movie, and these two characters are going to provide a juicy, delicious role for some young actors. They read like characters straight out of one of Cordova's movies and have motives of their own.

This novel, as the Cordovites favourite saying goes, is sovereign, deadly, and perfect. A second novel that establishes Marisha Pessl as not only a fantastic writer, but someone who deserves to be on your auto buy list, regardless of the subject matter. Trying to unravel the enigma that is Cordova is the perfect way to spend the last dying days of summer.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

A small but amazing book haul this week. I got one book, but it's a fantastic one.

Random House Canada sent me a lovely, gorgeous hardcover of Night Film by Marisha Pessl (Goodreads). I love this hardcover. The lettering catches the light and shimmers. It's really pretty. I've read this novel, and it's amazing, so I am quite happy to have a finished copy for my collection.

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

My Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Night Film Trailer

So, Night Film is one of my favourite reads of 2013 (so far anyways) and they just released the trailer for it. Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive, so it can be found on their website. It's creepy, and intense...exactly like the book. #SovereignDeadlyPerfect.

cover of Marissa Meyer's Cress

DYING! LOVE! LOVE! I love fairytales, and this cover is PERFECTION. It matches the other amazing covers in this series, and *bounces* it's Rapunzel! We also got a synopsis, and WHY DO I NOT HAVE THIS BOOK YET!

2014 Books

I am working on an end of the year thing that is going to be AMAZING! I can't wait to share. It's going to focus on the 2014 titles I am most excited for, and I've already started getting things in order.

MOVIE/TV

Gone Girl movie casting

Amy has been cast! Rosamund Pike will star opposite Ben Affleck in what should be a pretty good movie. I am cautiously optimistic about the casting so far. There are a few other roles I can't wait to see who gets cast for (mainly Nick's sister) and am looking forward to the first trailer/stills/etc.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie

I am loving all the footage, and details that have been released so far. We are not less than a month to release and I can't wait to see it. I am sad that it appears my city is not doing midnight showings.

The Killing

This season of The Killing is my favourite of the three so far. I am loving Linden and Holder so much, and them together is even better. Holder makes me chuckle almost every episode. SO FUNNY. The last episode  had some of the best performances and Peter Sarsgaard gave me chills. He was so good in that episode, especially those final minutes.

So what are you obsessed with this week?

Best of 2013.... so far

Hard to believe it's already 6 months until 2013. It's officially the half way point to the end of the year and time to check in and see what the best books I've read this year... so far at least. I've linked to my reviews if you want to know more about what I thought of each of these novels (or have indicated when a review is forthcoming in cases where reviews are not yet posted).

The top 10 in no particular order...

1 Tarnish by Katherine Longshore
A book that reads more like an autobiography than fiction. Anne Boleyn's voice leaps off the page, and creates one of the best characters I've read this year. A different approach as this novel focuses on her life rather than her untimely death.
2 Dance of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin
Lush descriptions, hot romance, and flaw characters come together to create one of my favourite of the year. A perfect ending to Araby's story that leaves you with just enough light in the darkness to say goodbye to these characters who are all too easy to become attached to.
3 Night Film by Marisha Pessl
Hands down one of the most well written novels I've read. The mystery of Ashley Cordova's death will haunt you, as will Stanislas Cordova himself. The question 'Who is Cordova' haunted me as much as it plagues our main character. This novel is sovereign, deadly and almost perfect. *review to come in the Autumn*
4 Golden Boy by Abigail Tarttelin
A novel that is beautiful and heart wrenching. It questions gender, and it's relevance to who we are. It's characters are ones that you'll remember long after you've finished this brilliant debut novel. Wonderfully written, and executed, this novel is one I urge everyone to pick it. It surprised me in the best possible way.
5 Star Cursed by Jessica Spotswood
Jessica Spotswood delivered a sequel that more that lives up to the first installment of the series. Filled with sibling rivalry, magic, romance, and ending in a heart crushing climax that will leave you breathless for the final novel. It's avoids the normal hindrances found in sequels and delivers something magical.
6 Before I Go To Sleep by S.J Watson
Thrilling, scary and disjointing. A novel told from the perspective of a character who is the definition of an unreliable narrator. SJ Watson has taken an already alarming premise and made it as sinister as possible. A novel that doesn't let go until all the secrets have been unraveled in the shocking ending.
7 Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare
An emotional ending to a trilogy that may just be superior to the author's Mortal Instruments. Saying goodbye to beloved characters is never easy but this ending provides everything I could have wanted. Closure, emotional payoff, and brilliant connecting between the two already interconnected series.
8 Reboot by Amy Tintera
A novel that surprised me with how much I fell in love with it. It's a fascinating look at what makes us human. Sweet romance, mixed with incredible action scenes, it's a novel that is as dark as it is beautiful. If this one flew under your radar, be sure to pick it up. It'll surprise you.
9 The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
A novel filled with brilliant world building. Paige's world is complex, and so fully fleshed out that my excitement over what is to come is almost as great as my love for the first installment to this series. A captivating character in Paige, and some intriguing plot developments make me think this is a series, and writer, to watch. *review to come in the August*
10 Game by Barry Lyga
The follow up to I Hunt Killers is everything it's predecessor was, and more. Jazz remains as chilling as he is charming. The stakes are as high as ever, and Barry Lyga's twisted story unfolds at a perfect pace, making the novel impossible to put down.
I can't wait to see which of these will make it to the final list of top ten books of the year come the end of December. What is the best book you've read so far this year? Let me know in the comments.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Night Film by Marisha Pessl

Just finished this late last night, and words cannot even describe how good it is. The writing, the plot, the way everything unfolds. I will not say too much (want to save it for my review) but this book is going to be on a lot of beaches come it's August release date.

Cover of Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd

I thought The Madman's Daughter had a pretty cover, but Her Dark Curiosity has outdone even that. It's the dress, the London backdrop, and the way the model stands out against everything. It automatically catches your eye. Needless to say after reading the INTRIGUING synopsis I am dying to get my hands on this book.

Cover of Perfect Lies by Kiersten White

The sequel to Mind Games has a cover that matches, and is also awesome. I loved the Mind Games cover, and this one is equally eye catching. The synopsis was also released, and it sounds like it'll be an exciting conclusion to this duology.

Cover of Defy by Sara B Larson

The premise of this one caught my attention. Just read the synopsis and you'll be pining too! I love that she disguises herself as a boy to be part of the Prince's guard. The love triangle mention has me a little leery, but if done well they can be a fantastic plot point. I love the mixture of rose with the sword imagery this title uses. It's a nod to the main character, and it's genre.

Cover of Manor of Secrets by Katherine Longshore

I have loved all of Katherine's previous novels, and I can't wait to get my hands on this one. It's been compared to Downton Abbey and I do love historical fiction, especially with a fantastic sounding synopsis. I think this is going to be a fun read.

TV

Primetime Emmy Awards pre-nomination voting

The ballots to determine who will be nominated at this year's Emmy Awards were made available this past week. I become obsessed with the actual nomination themselves, but this year the pre-nomination voting has caught my attention. There are so many amazing performances that deserved to be recognized. High up on that list for me is Freddie Highmore for his performance as Norman Bates in Bates Motel. He, surprisingly, was put forward in the supporting category. I do think this helps his chances of getting a nomination, but it's a weird choice as his role is pretty much the lead in the series. I can't wait until the official nominations are announced in July.

Waiting on Wednesday.... Night Film

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Night Film by Marisha Pessl

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
The critically acclaimed author of Special Topics in Calamity Physics, which People hailed as a "blockbuster debut," returns with a brilliant, breathtakingly suspenseful literary thriller, Night Film.

On a damp October night, beautiful, young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Her death is ruled a suicide, but veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding her death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of Ashley's father: cult horror film director Stanislas Cordova. Rumored to be shuttered away in a remote Adirondack estate, Cordova remains an enigma. Though much has been written about his unsettling films, very little is known about the man himself. With the help of two strangers, McGrath is slowly drawn into Cordova's eerie, hypnotic world as he pieces together the answers: What really happened to Ashley? Who is Cordova? And once we face our deepest fears-what lies on the other side?

Night Film, the gorgeously written, spellbinding new novel by the dazzlingly inventive Marisha Pessl, will hold you in suspense until you turn the final page.
So I have been pining for this since it first came to my attention. I LOVE the sound of this, and hope it's just as twisty and insane as it sounds. I think perhaps this might be the big adult hit of 2013. It comes out just in time to be the last summer beach read before September..... can not wait.

Expected release date August 20, 2013

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

I immediately read this upon it's release. It was everything I hoped it would be. Humourous, heartbreaking, and bittersweet. As sad as I am to say goodbye, I can not think of a more perfect ending to this story.

Night Film by Marisha Pessl

I can't even express how excited I am for this. Now that the cover has been officially released, it's making me even more excited. The marketing aspect of using twitter hash tags has become popular and this novel's use of #WhoIsCordova has me intrigued. More details can be found on the official website.

TV

Bates Motel

Creepy. Intense. Gripping. The pilot episode was both not what I was expecting, and yet so much more. Freddie Highmore is perfectly cast as a young Norman Bates, and Vera Farmiga is delightfully unsettling as his mother. There are just a few little glimpses of the Norman Bates we know from Psycho, and with just one episode I am officially invested.

OTHER

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries DVD Release/Kickstarter campaign

If you haven't watched The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, please DO SO IMMEDIATELY. You can start from the beginning easily on the official website. The DVD release was announced and with it a Kickstarter campaign. The goal has already been met, and I am still deciding what amount to pledge myself, but I think it's a fun way for fans for get involved.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Icons by Margaret Stohl book trailer

Intense. Also one of the more well done book trailers I've seen. I get that these are often done under a strict budget, but this one looks polished. It really tells me the tone of the book, and I am eager to pick this one up. Luckily I have a copy taunting me from my book closet. I hope to be able to pick it up soon.

Night Film by Marisha Pessl

(Copyright of Random House Canada via Instagram account)

While fangirling about Night Film by Marisha Pessl and how badly I want to read it I mentioned to Random House Canada via Twitter that I would love to see a cover. They sent me a link to their Instagram photo above. I can't wait to read it.

Cover for Fire With Fire by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian

I love that they used the same models, and that the covers match. Excited to see what happens, especially with Mary.

TV

Once Upon A Time Paleyfest panel

There is so much I LOVE about this entire panel. Each actor is delightful, and so funny. I have to say that Colin O'Donoghue's accent is incredibly sexy. Oh, and the titles of the last two episodes of the season? Totally made me freak out! I adore the Peter Pan story and can not wait to see what Once Upon A Time does with Neverland.
