**received for honest review from the publisher**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
High school meets classic horror in this groundbreaking new series.

It was a dark and stormy night when Tor Frankenstein accidentally hit someone with her car. And killed him. But all is not lost--Tor, being the scientific genius she is, brings him back to life...

Thus begins a twisty, turn-y take on a familiar tale, set in the town of Hollow Pines, Texas, where high school is truly horrifying.
It's a dark and stormy night when Tor accidentally hits someone with her car, and brings him back to life. This recognizable setting and plot is giving new life with Chandler Baker's fresh spin on this classic tale. An atmospheric, enjoyable read that allows it's main character to be deeply flawed, and unapologetic for it.

Tor is the stand out in this novel. She's unapologetic for her faults, and her laser like focus. She is, at time, abrasive, and puts the science ahead of those around her. She may not endear herself to you, but she fascinates you. She's the type of character that makes you wish you could go a little deeper, and delve a little more into her psyche. The fact that her worldview skews a little darker, all in the name of science, and that she is willing to be a little ruthless to achieve her goals is my favourite part of the character. Chandler Baker lets the character be who Tor Frankenstein is supposed to be, and doesn't flinch away from the fact that she's flawed and, at times, uncaring. The twist of having the creator be female makes this story fresh, and Chandler didn't compromise the creator role and made Tor everything that character should be.

There is plenty of humour woven into this story and it offers as many laughs as it does chills. Adam, the young man Tor resurrects is the surprising cause of some of that humour. There is an endearing, child like quality to him at first that lends itself to some humour before things get scary. The rest come from Tor's sidekick and friend. He's the voice of reason who sometimes gets in over his head while helping out his friend. The humour is never without the darkness however, and that atmosphere and tone is always present in every single part of this story.

The chills in this story come more from being unsettled than truly terrified. There is plenty of gory descriptions to set you on edge, and some tension filled passages that will leave you clutching the book with white knuckles. This feels like a modern homage to the classic story that is well known for it's unsettling tone, and 'less is more' approach of scaring you. The novel offers up plenty of gory scenes, but also allows the reader's imagination to create the monster who haunts these pages. This, for me, is always more impactful as your imagination can always create something even more unsettling in my opinion.

This series, even after the first novel, reads like a show or a movie. It would make an incredible television series. I could see it being at home on the CW or Freeform networks. There is an edgy, current vibe that lends itself to a stylish TV show.

The next books will feature other classic horror tales revamped into more modern fare. I cannot wait to see the twist on Dracula in particular. Rumour has it that some of the side characters will step into the forefront for the 'companion' novels and the set up is certainly there.

Teen Frankenstein offers a fun, unsettling start to a new horror centric series. It's a novel that is entirely fun to read. It's a quick, enjoyable take on the Frankenstein tale, and one that Chandler Baker puts her own gory twist on. I eagerly await the second novel in this series set in a town where high school really is the stuff of nightmares.

2016 Most Anticipated - Teen Frankenstein

It probably comes as no surprise that I am into Frankenstein. I also will immediately devour any retellings that catch my attention. My next 2016 Most Anticipated selection takes the Gothic Horror classic and sets it in a highschool... and has a female in the role of creator. SIGN ME UP, IMMEDIATELY.

A female 'Victor'!! So excited by this. I cannot wait to see how delightfully scary this read is. I've already heard good things, but check out this amazing Goodreads synopsis

This is supposed to be the start of a series set in Hallow Pines, and filled with all the characters from classic Gothic Horror novels. I am impatiently waiting for her twist on Dracula!

Chandler kindly answered some questions about the book for me as part of the event.

1 Describe Teen Frankenstein using only three words.

I'll cheat and use a contraction: Who's the monster

2 If someone were to make a signature ice cream in honour of your book, what might be included?

It'd have to start with a mint Blue Bell base because--hello, Texas and green--and add some gummy worms because of...death.

3 Let us in on one secret about one of your characters, or the world they inhabit.

Bert is the name of my main character's car, a forest green Grand Marquis, and it's based off of my best friend in high school's car, also named Bert--we had a lot of great times driving around in that car and I knew I had to pay it homage.

4 Your novel is inspired by Frankenstein. What about the classic tale inspired you to write this particular story?

I knew I wanted to do a gender-flip. Maybe this is bad to say, but I really related to the ambition of Dr. Frankenstein in the original. It's my sense that we're more comfortable with men sacrificing for their art or career aspirations. It's okay for men to become rude, hermit, curmudgeons in the name of their art--I'd even argue it's a badge of honor (for better or worse). I related to the single-mindedness that I sometimes wish I could have over my writing. The main character, Tor, sees science as her art and pursues greatness in it unapologetically.

5 If you could travel to anywhere, in any time period, when and where would you want travel?

I'll go with the Midwest in the 1950s. It seems like a very cool time to be a teen--or maybe I'm just craving a soda shoppe milkshake.

6 What 2016 release are you most anticipating?

After the Woods by Kim Savage!

7. If not too spoilery, can you share the first line of Teen Frankenstein.

Yesterday I didn't win a Nobel Prize.

Same here, Tor. I did not win one either. My nieces would be ALL over that ice cream, and HECK YES to everything she said about being unapologetic about pursuing something.

Teen Frankenstein releases January 12, 2016 and can be pre-ordered right now from any retailer.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

Some amazing goodies made their way into my mailbox this week.

Teen Frankenstein by Chandler Baker (goodreads)
Tell The Wind and Fire by Sarah Rees Brennan (goodreads)
Where Futures End by Parker Peevyhouse (goodreads)

A huge thank you to Penguin Random House (especially @RazorbillCA) and Raincoast Books for these! I am curious about Where Futures End so I was excited to get it. The other two are ones I have been highly anticipating so I am hoping to read them very soon.

What books made their way into your mailbox this week?

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

A small weekly obsessions this week. There were two amazing cover reveals that happened and those are what I am highlighting this week.

BOOK

cover reveal for Teen Frankenstein by Chandler Baker (goodreads)

This is the official cover, the ARC does have a VERY different one, but I love this one so much. It's simple, striking, and clever.

I think it works perfectly for a Frankenstein inspired novel on more than one level.

Cover reveal for Lee Kelly's A Criminal Magic (goodreads)

This novel combines prohibition with magic and that basically made it an automatic "MUST READ" addition to my to be read wishlist. However, this stunning cover has only cemented that desire.

Anyone else immediately want to have a fancy drink while reading this book? Cocktails may have to happen when  I get my hands on this one.

What are you obsessed with this week?

Raincoast Winter/Spring Blogger Preview

The lovely people at Raincoast Books recently held their annual winter/spring blogger preview and I was fortunate enough to be able to attend virtually via a special Google Hangout that they created for bloggers not in the Vancouver area.

They filled us in on a bunch of fantastic sounding releases but I am going to highlight just my top five that should be on your radar.

1 - Truthwitch by Susan Dennard (goodreads)

I feel everyone pretty much knows about this one already. The buzz it created at BEA was intense, and it's only rising! A unique twist on 'witches' and magic along with the potential for much swooning and shipping, all make this one a sure bet to be a huge release this winter.

2 - Tell The Wind And Fire by Sarah Rees Brennan (goodreads)

All I needed to be sold on this one was the description that described it as A Tale Of Two Cities with magic. The synopsis sounds amazing, the cover is stunning, and there is the potential for much heartbreak. I am eagerly anticipating getting my hands on this one.

3- Firsts by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn (goodreads)

This has been compared to the delightful movie Easy A. It sounds like this novel will have a lot to say about perception, rumours, and sex. It also is a bonus that the author is Canadian!

4- In Real Life by Jessica Love (goodreads)

A road trip to Vegas, the potential of friends turning into romance, and  the promise of DRAMA that comes along with meeting someone you met online pushed this book onto my wishlist.

5- Teen Frankenstein by Chandler Baker  (goodreads)

This was only mentioned in passing but it is one of my most anticipated books of 2016 so I had to include it. A girl accidentally kills the most popular boy in school, so she decides to bring him back to life! Love the sounds of this Frankenstein reimagining.

BONUS! - The Winner's Kiss by Marie Rutkoski (goodreads)

All I am going to say about this one is if you haven't heard The Winner's Curse, and The Winner's Crime you are missing out on an amazing series. Stunning writing, heartbreaking storylines, and a swoon worthy romance have made this one series ender I cannot wait to devour.

At the end there was plenty of talk of Marissa Meyer and how #WinterIsComing as well as a bit regarding the short story collection Stars Above. There was also a brief mention of Heartless which caused me to fangirl and squeal. I cannot wait for this book.

They also gave me a sweet shout out as I had asked Melissa to provide some details about Teen Frankenstein by Chandler Baker. I am VERY curious about this start to a new series and was thrilled to have them mention it because I had asked.

A huge thank you to all the lovely people at Raincoast for putting on the event!

What book from the five I highlighted are you most curious about/excited for? Let me know in the comments.

Waiting On Wednesday ....... Teen Frankenstein

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Teen Frankenstein by Chandler Baker

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Frankenstein has always been one of my favourite classic novels, for so many reasons. This adaptation intrigued me because the 'Victor' character is female! It also happens to be the start of a series that will adapt classic horror tales and have them all set in the town of Hollow Pines, Texas. This is basically YA Penny Dreadful and to that I say - yes, please.

Expected release date - January 12, 2016

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week. Short and sweet this week!

BOOKS

Cover of Mortal Danger by Ann Aguirre (goodreads)

REALLY different than what I anticipated. Based on the Goodreads synopsis I want this, immediately. It sounds awesome, and I do love this cover. It's simple, eye catching, and different than most of the covers out there.

High School Horror Story series by Chandler Baker

I am a sucker for anything that puts a twist on a classic tale. This deal that was recently announced via Entertainment Weekly immediately piqued my interest

Entertainment Weekly has the following blurb
The first book in the series, written by YA author Chandler Baker, will be called Teen Frankenstein and will hit shelves in Fall 2015. The High School Horror Story series will re-imagine classic literary monsters in a Paris, Texas high school. The first book will draw inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, told through the lens of a teenage girl who falls in love with the popular classmate she both accidentally kills and then brings back to life.
I pretty much want this immediately. It sounds like something I might end up LOVING if done right. I am also interested to see what other 'classic literary monsters' will feature.

OTHER

BEA

It is officially March, which means BEA is getting close! We're beginning to have a few signings details released and March generally is when things start to happen. I want it to be May! I am most looking forward to (outside of BEA) going to see Heathers, having Shake Shack, and exhausted nights chatting with my bookish people!

Need For Speed movie

I got to see an advance screening of this on Thursday. IT IS SO MUCH FUN! It's got some awesome car stunts. Aaron Paul is almost Steve McQueen-esque as a leading man. Side note - He wears a leather jacket incredibly well *swoon*. The 'love interest' in the story was sweet and not strictly used as eye candy. There was a lot I enjoyed about it. Most of all it's funny. Way funnier than I was expecting.

So what are you obsessed with this week?
