Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOKS

Cover of Tonight The Streets Are Ours by Leila Sales

I love the title font! It's really cute. The colour scheme is really pretty. It sounds like a fun book, and there is something incredibly romantic about spending an entire night with someone exploring some place together. It reminds me of Before Sunrise which is one of my favourite movies....ever.

TV/MOVIE

The Fall

Jamie Dornan stunned me with how amazing he is in this TV show. He's charming, creepy, and unsettling all at once. If you haven't seen the first season it's available on Netflix to binge watch the short (5 episodes) season. The second season has only just started and I am already obsessed again.

The Fall by Bethany Griffin

The Fall by Bethany Griffin

Publisher Website - Harper Collins
Publisher Social Media - Twitter/Facebook/SavvyReader/Frenzy
Pages -  400 pages
My Rating - 5/5
**received in exchange for an honest review from the publisher**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Madeline Usher is doomed.

She has spent her life fighting fate, and she thought she was succeeding. Until she woke up in a coffin.

Ushers die young. Ushers are cursed. Ushers can never leave their house, a house that haunts and is haunted, a house that almost seems to have a mind of its own. Madeline’s life—revealed through short bursts of memory—has hinged around her desperate plan to escape, to save herself and her brother. Her only chance lies in destroying the house.

In the end, can Madeline keep her own sanity and bring the house down? The Fall is a literary psychological thriller, reimagining Edgar Allan Poe’s classic The Fall of the House of Usher.
From the moment you open up The Fall and read Madeline's harrowing awakening inside a coffin you immediately know what you're in for. The tone, pacing and feel of the novel is laid out in one breathless, dizzying scene. Bethany Griffin has woven together a increasingly unsettling story that from start to finish leaves you fearful of the walls around you.

Every aspect of the novel from the writing style, characters, and pacing all combine to create the tone. The disjointed narration of the story only adds to the unease felt while reading. Each chapter is a different point in Madeline's life, checking in at various ages during her time at the house of Usher. This allows us to see a distorted progression of Madeline's decline, and keeps the tension tight. We know how this story is going to end (with Madeline buried alive) but taking the journey to get the whys and hows is made all the more unsettling by this narration choice.

It's hard to talk about Madeline as a character. She progresses as she ages and changes. The young girl is not the same as the young woman she becomes. A characteristic that remains constant, however, is how she doesn't just sit back. She does not want to be passive and let things happen to her. She doesn't want to be the victim. She wants to fight back. She has a strength to her that, even as her mental state is dwindling, never really leaves her.

A narrator like Madeline is, unsurprisingly, one of my favourites. She's unreliable. Her mental state is growing more and more unbalanced as the story progresses. The teasing thoughts of how much to believe, and how much is real is never far from the reader's mind. We are only seeing her version of events, and no matter how much you want to fight it, there is also that little nagging feeling of 'what if'. On the other side of this, the curse is explored fully, and we see the allure, and effect it had on people. We see everyone from the doctors, Roderick, and others succumb to the twisted desires of the house.

The closed in, claustrophobic feeling that seeps into every page is only heightened by the limited setting. There is the house, and the surrounding area that we get to explore. We see nothing outside of them, as Madeline sees nothing outside of them. It's repetitiveness only adds to the feeling that everything is closing in on Madeline, and by extension, the reader.

A novel that begs to be read with the lights on, and in open spaces, The Fall left me feeling claustrophobic. Bethany Griffin shows that she is the queen of capturing mood and atmosphere in her writing. This is one not to be missed this Halloween season, as it provides chills, thrills, and delicious writing.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

I've had an insane book week this week, and I am so excited about everything.

First up, I went to an advance screening of If I Stay and they had a trivia giveaway. One of the bags was some If I Stay swag, and it's all really cute!

It's a tank top, a luggage tag and little notebook. Very cute. I loved the movie. It was exactly what I wanted it to be. Mirelle Enos was my favourite part of the movie, but Jamie Blackley as Adam was pretty prefect!

I had to wait to get my copy of Isla and the Happily Ever After because I pre-ordered one of those signed copies that came with special goodies. The closest place to me was Toronto, and I happened to be going there anyways, so I picked it up at the same time.

Isla and the Happily Ever After (goodreads)

The book, an awesome tote bag, three cute buttons, and some stickers! I am happily reading this right now and wanting to hug the book it's so cute.

I also got a few amazing sounding books from Harper Collins Canada

The Fall by Bethany Griffin (goodreads)
The Death Of Us by Alice Kuipers (goodreads)
Us by David Nicholls (goodreads)

I love Bethany's other books, so I am excited to read The Fall. The Death Of Us is one that Harper Canada has been talking about quite a bit. I read One Day by David Nicholls, and have been eager to see what he would release next.

Lastly, I also got one of the most awesome buttons EVER!

That cover, right? So stunning. A big thank you to Harper Collins for the books, and the amazing
button!

What books made their way into your mailbox this week?

Happy weekend, and happy reading!

Waiting on Wednesday ....... The Fall

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is The Fall by Bethany Griffin

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

It's no secret that I loved Bethany's previous novels. I loved her twist on Edgar Allan Poe's Masque of the Red Death, and cannot wait to see what she'll do with his The Fall of the House of Usher. This one sounds creepy, unsettling, and just a little bit twisty.

It's subject matter, and release date are going to make it a perfect Halloween read!

Expected release date - October 7, 2014

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week. It's heavy on the pretty covers because it's cover reveal time!

BOOKS

This was the week of cover reveals because Harper unveiled almost all of their Fall 2014 title's covers.

Cover for Amy Ewing's The Jewel

It reminds me a lot of the covers for The Selection. However, the synopsis makes it sound like an ever darker world. I do love this cover though. It's really pretty.

Cover for Anna Carey's Blackbird

The premise for this sounds really intriguing. It's told in second person which, from all accounts, makes you fully immersed in this story. The cover is okay, but the tagline immediately has me saying "whoa!".

Cover for Caroline Pignat's Unspeakable

I always love underwater photos/art/etc and this is no exception. I think it's really pretty. The synopsis has me wanting to read this immediately though! It not only takes place in Canada, but has a heartbreaking romance at it's center. Totally intrigued.

Cover of Illusions of Fate by Kiersten White

Oh! I love this. It's beautiful. The mixture of magic with a touch of historical has me really intrigued. Plus Kiersten White mentioned there would be kissing. I enjoy kissing in books. Add it to your Goodreads if you haven't already.

Cover of Bethany Griffin's The Fall

I helped reveal this on this blog this week. However, I LOVE it. It captures the haunting, creepy vibe of the synopsis perfectly. Bethany's previous books are some of my favourites so I can't wait to get my hands on this one.

OTHER

Book Expo America

Tickets are purchased. Apartment is booked. Things are happening. Why is it not May yet? The big news that was announced is that Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, and Alan Cumming are the Master of Ceremonies for the annual breakfasts BEA hosts. This is obviously awesome! I am looking forward to the autographing schedule being released so I can attempt to plan my days.

So what are you obsessed with this week?

Cover Reveal..... The Fall by Bethany Griffin

Today I get to help reveal the cover for one of my most anticipated reads of 2014. I loved Bethany Griffin's previous series, and can not wait to get my hands on her new stand alone - The Fall, a retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of Usher.

Here's the synopsis to get you excited

Bethany is celebrating her cover unveiling with a giveaway! The prize is an Edgar Allan Poe Collection, and an Edgar Allen Poe Library candle.

In order to win, you'll have to email Bethany the answer to the following trivia question -
What sort of body of water (lake, stream, inlet- none of these are the answer, just examples!) stands before the house, creating an illusion that there are two unsettlingly horrible houses as the House of Usher is reflected.
Once you've found the answer, email it to info@bethanygriffin.com. You have until Feb 20th to submit your entry. Good luck.

Now, for the pretty! I LOVE this cover. It fits the synopsis perfectly, and it is certainly eye catching.

2014 Most Anticipated - The Fall

The next pick on my 2014 Most Anticipated list is a novel by one of my favourite authors. Bethany Griffin's next novel, The Fall, sounds amazing.

Just check out this Goodreads synopsis and you'll be as desperate to read it as I am

In the end, can Madeline keep her own sanity and bring the house down? The Fall is a literary psychological thriller, reimagining Edgar Allan Poe’s classic The Fall of the House of Usher.
Give me this now! RIGHT NOW! There is not a cover available yet, but needless to say, I WANT IT! I am very much looking forward to anything about this novel, and can not wait for 2014 to provide all the details.

Bethany kindly took the time to answer a few questions about the novel.

1 Please describe The Fall in 3 words

Creepy, Dark, gothic

2 Edgar Allen Poe seems to inspire you. What about this particular story inspired you to write The Fall?

The Fall of the House of Usher is my favorite Poe story. It starts with two pages of Poe's unnamed narrator getting the nerve to enter the house...and once inside, the twins with the terribly heightened senses, their madness and relationship...Madeline Usher has no voice in Poe's story. So, I wanted to give her a voice. Plus a dark haunted house, is my favorite sort of setting!

3 What do you think would happen if Araby Worth met Madeline Usher? (if such a thing were possible)

Because Madeline is cursed with a family malady that changes her consciousness, she probably wouldn't approve highly of Araby's use of drugs, but she would probably understand Araby's grief better than anyone, since Madeline is very close to her own twin brother, Roderick. They would probably have some basic understanding for one another, but their lives are so completely different that it might make it hard for them to truly communicate.

4 Are you able to share a secret about one of the characters, the world, something that inspired something about the world/characters?

Well, the most mysterious character is the house itself. It's connected to the family, "house of Usher" but also IS the House of Usher. A weird dichotomy. Madeline's big questions revolve around ...what does the house want, is it good or bad, is it looking out for her or holding her prisoner. Or could it be doing both?

5 What 2014 release are you looking forward to?

The Treatment by Suzanne Young.

A huge thank you to Bethany for taking the time to answer these questions. This title is one of the ones I am desperate to get my hands on as soon as possible.

If you want to learn more, check out the author's website, or the publisher's website for more information.

The Fall will be in stores Fall 2014. Pre-orders for this title are not available yet, but be sure to add it to your Goodreads so that you'll remember to pre-order when it becomes available.

Let me know in the comments what you think of the synopsis, or let me know if you've read Bethany's previous books. Also, check back soon for a contest where you could win one of my featured titles (be sure to pay attention to these Question and Answers as they'll help).

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Bethany Griffin's newest book

Bethany Griffin announced her newest novel, another Poe inspired tale, will be released this fall. The novel, titled The Fall, sounds amazing. It is based off of Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. Needless to say I will be diving into Poe's version immediately to see where Bethany's inspiration came from.

MOVIE/TV

HBO Documentaries

I've gotten into watching HBO documentaries. I watched Love, Marilyn and I thought it was fantastic. It captured her essence and everyone was wonderful in it. I decided to check out some more, and stumbled upon Paradise Lost. A sobering look at a horrific murder case, and a trail riddled with errors and inconsistencies. I am hoping to check out more as I am fascinated by the ones I've seen so far.

So what are you obsessed with this week?
