Here is the Goodreads synopsis
For as long as she can remember, Gwendolyn Allister has never had a place to call home—all because her mother believes that monsters are hunting them. Now these delusions have brought them to London, far from the life Gwen had finally started to build for herself. The only saving grace is her best friend, Olivia, who’s coming with them for the summer.

But when Gwen and Olivia are kidnapped by shadowy creatures and taken to a world of flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey, Gwen realizes her mom might have been sane all along.

The world Gwen finds herself in is called Neverland, yet it’s nothing like the stories. Here, good and evil lose their meaning and memories slip like water through her fingers. As Gwen struggles to remember where she came from and find a way home, she must choose between trusting the charming fairy-tale hero who says all the right things and the roguish young pirate who promises to keep her safe.

With time running out and her enemies closing in, Gwen is forced to face the truths she’s been hiding from all along. But will she be able to save Neverland without losing herself?
The easiest way to get me to read something is to entice me with the promise of Peter Pan. Unhooked easily made my most anticipated of 2016 as soon as I read the synopsis. I was happy to find that while there was much for this Peter Pan fangirl to love, the story ultimately works on it's own. Offering up roguish pirates, yesterday villains and brilliant world building, Unhooked will have you spellbound from page one.

The popular twist of Peter being a much darker character is used here, but Hook is not painted as a hero either. They are both hiding dark secrets and are willing to lie to get what they want. As a result both Gwen and the reader are unsure of who to trust. I appreciated that there was no romanticizing of abusive behaviour within these pages, and that certain actions were painted in the light that they should have been. Neither guy is given a free pass, but one is decidedly way more horrible than the other. Lisa Maxwell also, wisely, never has one of the guys treat the love interest horribly which is something that happens (and is forgiven) all too often in other novels.

The romance is going to be one of the favourite elements for a lot of readers. I, personally, found it pretty swoon worthy and not overpowering to the story. The love triangle that is hinted as in the synopsis is barely a whisper within the pages of the story so those who avoid love triangles need not worry when picking up this title.

The setting of Neverland is vibrant, and as rich as I would have hoped. Neverland is almost a character itself, and Lisa Maxwell brings her version to life with her vivid descrptions. She creates an ever changing, stunning, deadly, beautiful land for her characters to inhabit and it only adds to this novel's charms. This may not be the Neverland we're used to,but it's none the less magical. It is a setting that holds it's owns secrets and these secrets are the heart of the novel.

A novel that, while inspired by Peter Pan, fully stands on it's own. It uses the Peter Pan legend, as well as pulling from other mythology, to create a story that is uniquely it's own. While I would be hesitant to call this a retelling, it certainly is inspired by the classic tale, and fans will delight in the homage Lisa Maxwell has paid to the source material. It offers it's own kind of magic within it's pages, and that certainly makes it worth the read.

Unhooked Blog Tour - Interview

Those who have visited my blog previously are already aware of my Peter Pan obsession. Obviously, any book that pulls inspiration from Peter Pan is going to be high on my must read list. Lisa Maxwell's UNHOOKED obviously caught my attention when I read the blurb and I am thrilled to be part of the blog tour to help celebrate it's upcoming release.

Here is a little about the book (in case it's not already on your radar)...
Title: UNHOOKED
Author: Lisa Maxwell
Release Date: February 2, 2016
Pages: 352
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Formats: Hardcover & eBook

From “talented wordsmith” (Publishers Weekly) Lisa Maxwell comes a lush, atmospheric fantasy novel filled with twists and turns about a girl who is kidnapped and brought to an island inhabited by fairies, a roguish ship captain, and bloodthirsty beasts.

For as long as she can remember, Gwendolyn Allister has never had a place to call home. Her mother believes they are being hunted by brutal monsters, and those delusions have brought them to London, far from the life Gwen had finally started to build for herself. Gwen’s only saving grace is that her best friend, Olivia, is with her for the summer.
But shortly after their arrival, the girls are kidnapped by shadowy creatures and dragged to a world of flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey. And Gwen begins to realize that maybe her mother isn’t so crazy after all…

Gwen discovers that this new world she inhabits is called Neverland, but it’s nothing like the Neverland you’ve heard about in stories. Here, good and evil lose their meaning and memories slip like water through your fingers. As Gwen struggles to remember where she came from and tries to find a way home, she must choose between trusting the charming fairy-tale hero who says all the right things and the captivating pirate who promises to keep her safe.

Caught in the ultimate battle between good and evil, with time running out and her enemies closing in, Gwen is forced to finally face the truths she’s been hiding from all along. But can she save Neverland without losing herself?
Amazing right? I can confirm that the book is as good as that synopsis sounds.

I got to interview Pan and he shared a little about his Neverland, and so much more!

1 Tell us something unique about your Neverland.

In your world, the stories make it seem like anyone can come to Neverland. Well, I suppose they can come, but staying is another thing altogether. Children do well enough here, because this world is a place for the wild, unruly desires of innocence. But once human children begin to get older… Let’s just say things get a bit fragile.

2 What is your favourite spot in all of Neverland?

My favourite place in all of Neverland is the falls. Its beauty is unparalleled, and there I feel most at home, most at peace.

3 What is one thing you would actually want people to know about you?

I’m not particularly interested in people knowing much of anything about me, but perhaps you can tell them this: I’ve fought long and hard to scrape out a place in this world, and there’s very little I wouldn’t do to protect it—especially when it comes to the likes of the Captain.

4 You're kind of a legend in my world. How do you feel about this?

Am I? Do tell… I quite like the idea, actually. Very much.

5 If you could have one person live in Neverland with you, who would it be?

What do you mean, one person? I can have whomever I like live with me here…for however long they last.

Thanks for stopping by Pan!

2016 Most Anticipated - Unhooked

The next 2016  Most Anticipated selection is one inspired by one of my favourite stories. It involves pirates, fairies and a boy who did not want to grow up.

This Goodreads synopsis makes it clear we're not dealing with Disney's Peter, or it's Neverland. This promises to be DARK, DARK, DARK!

While Peter as the villain is all the rage right now, I am hoping this offers up a unique twist on the tale, and the character. It certainly grabbed my attention and I cannot wait to read it.

Lisa answered a few questions about the book, shared some inspiration behind it, and offers a peek at the first line of the story!

1 Twitter pitch Unhooked (140 characters or less).

A stolen girl, a pirate w/ nothing left to lose, & a fairytale hero w/ a dark twist. Sometimes, there's nothing more dangerous than a story.

2 If someone were to make a signature drink in honour of your book, what might be included?

Absinthe

3 Let us in on one secret about one of your characters, or the world they inhabit.

I chose my MC’s last name, Allister, because it’s Gaelic for “defender of man."

4 Unhooked takes inspiration from Peter Pan. What about the classic tale inspired you to write this story?

Captain Hook— I wanted to write a pirate book, but I didn’t want to write a historical. I was tossing around different ideas when I came across Peter Pan, and once I actually read J.M. Barrie’s original novel, I was struck with just how wrong all of our popular versions of the story are. It’s a really dark story, and while Neverland is definitely fantastical, it’s also a scary place. I wanted to go back to that original sense—the danger mixed with the fantastic nature of the island.

5 If you could travel to anywhere, in any time period, when and where would you want travel?

1920s Paris. I want to hang out with Hem and the gang.

6 What 2016 release are you most anticipating?

Definitely THE RAVEN KING. Though I know she’s probably going to kill Gansey and break my heart.

7. If not too spoilery, can you share the first line of Unhooked.

Outside the rain-splattered window of the taxi, London looks like its dressed for a funeral

I agree. Neverland really does lend itself to a darker story! I cannot wait to see what Lisa does with all the characters and the setting. Here's hoping for a little romance as well.

Unhooked releases February 2, 2016 and can be pre-ordered right now from any retailer.
