Here is the Goodreads synopsis
22 minutes separate Julia Vann’s before and after.

Before: Julia had a twin brother, a boyfriend, and a best friend.

After: She has a new identity, a new hometown, and memories of those twenty-two minutes that refuse to come into focus. At least, that’s what she tells the police.

Now that she’s Lucy Black, she's able to begin again. She's even getting used to the empty bedroom where her brother should be. And her fresh start has attracted the attention of one of the hottest guys in school, a boy who will do anything to protect her. But when someone much more dangerous also takes notice, Lucy's forced to confront the dark secrets she thought were safely left behind.

One thing is clear: The damage done can never be erased. It’s only just beginning. . . .
This has been called 'Gillian Flynn for the YA set'. It's a comparison that immediately lets you know what you're in for - a dark, twisted read that keeps you guessing. While Amanda Panitch certainly delivers a novel with unexpected twists she also offers up a engaging character study in Julia/Lucy and a deep look at the bonds that tie siblings together.

The choice of narrator is perfect for this type of novel. The subtle weaving and revealing of the plot through the narrators memories, and flashbacks worked incredibly well for this thriller like read. It's a strong choice, and that pays off in more ways than one by the end. There is a sense of foreboding that never quite abates as you turn the pages, however I think this may be a result of how the story feels entirely familiar. It's one we've read before. We've seen this done, even if Amanda puts who own twist on it. It's taught us to be on guard and that means less of spark when the match is lit. You'll be expecting it, but there is something thrilling about that to. It's the journey in this case, rather than the destination (even if the destination does have a few surprises in store).

The slower pacing of this novel works for the story being told. It allows the author to control the information and how quickly the reader gets it. You're fed just enough to get you hooked, and keep you baited. You're given enough to theorize even while the author is relishing the moment you'll have the rug pulled out from under you.

The sibling dynamic is centre stage in this plot. All of it revolves around their relationship, and the events leading up those crucial 22 minutes that changed everything. The truth behind what happened is much more complex than it seems at first glance. It's messy, dark, and exactly what is promised in the synopsis. Those 22 minutes and what happened during them is kept tantalizingly just out of reach until the exact moment it needs to be revealed, and is one of the more smartly woven together elements of the plot.

My only minor issue was that the ending feels much more vibrant, and explosive compared to the rest of the novel. While the story is paced out well, the last few chapters have a different feel than the rest of the novel. It's more gripping, and taunt. You can tell that these are the scenes Amanda Panitch was itching to write. You can see the characters burst through the writing in these pivotal moments in a way that is missing from the rest of the story.

A rollercoaster ride that picks up speed towards the end, and delivers one twist and turn after another. You may figure out the ending, but I promise the full impact of the twist will not be lost either way. A promising début from an author I hope to see much more from.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

A pretty exciting book week for me! I cannot wait to read some of the new books that made their way into my book closet.

Broken Hearts, Fences, and Other Things to Mend by Katie Finn (goodreads)
Maybe One Day by Melissa Kantor (goodreads)
Damage Done by Amanda Panitch (goodreads)
I Was Here by Gayle Forman (goodreads)

The first two books (Katie Finn and Melissa Cantor) are from Christy as part of my birthday present! Excited to read both of them. (Thank you, Christy!)

I received Damage Done at the two year anniversary of the bookclub I take part in at Chapters here in Ottawa! Very excited as this was one of my most anticipated reads of this year. (Thank you, Ciara)

Lastly, I have a copy of I Was Here by Gayle Forman that I was gifted from Meaghan (Thank you, Meaghan).

What books made their way into your mailbox this week?

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

Waiting On Wednesday ......... Damage Done

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Damage Done by Amanada Panitch

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

This book has been on my radar for a while and it's been called the YA Gone Girl, so I was (obviously) immediately intrigued. Luckily we don't have long to wait now before it's in stores.

Expected release date - July 21, 2015

2015 Most Anticipated ......... Damage Done

My next selection has been teased as a YA Gone Girl, which immediately made me desperate to read it. This should be unsurprising if you know me. It sounds both twisty and dark which is a perfect combination.

Just check out this Goodreads synopsis and you'll be wanting to read it immediately as well..

Doesn't it make you just want to unravel all the mysteries it hints at?! I got Amanda to spill some secrets about the novel and I think she teases just enough to make you want to devour this novel immediately...

1 Describe Damage Done in three words or less.

YA Gone Girl. That's how my agent pitched it and I think it works!

2 If someone were to make an ice cream flavour for your book, what might be included?

I like ice cream with a lot of stuff in it, so Damage Done ice cream would have to have a lot of stuff in it - caramel swirl, chocolate covered almonds, Heath Bar crunch, brownies. Plus something surprising like chocolate covered potato chips (just not walnuts. Walnuts are the devil).

3 Can you share a secret about your book (either it's world, it's characters, or something that helped inspire the story)?

The inspiration behind the book is a spoiler, so I can't share that! One secret is that the book is set entirely in California... where I've never been. So that took a lot of research.

4 If you could travel to anywhere, in any time period, when and where would you want travel?

I've always been fascinated by ruins, so I'd want to go back and check out my favorite ruins before they were ruins - the Parthenon, Machu Picchu, the Coliseum. Also ancient Jerusalem.

5 What three things do you need while revising?

1. My laptop - I have no problem writing anywhere from my apartment to hotel rooms to coffee shops, but I have trouble writing on other computers or devices.

2. A clear goal. If I don't set a goal for myself, I don't get anything done. It's easy when drafting - I just set a certain number of words a day for myself - but I find it harder when revising because I could be doing anything from tightening prose to rewriting scenes.

3. Good snacks. Naturally.

6 If possible, please share the first line of Damage Done. (only answer if not too spoilery).

I have one picture left of my brother.

I know need to know the inspiration behind the story since it's a spoiler. I cannot wait to read it to see if I can figure out what she meant.

Damage Done is released July 21st but you can pre-order it now

Be sure to check back later on during the event for a chance to win a copy of Damage Done (or any of my featured titles).

You can follow Amanda Panitch on Twitter, visit her official website, and learn more about the book from the publisher website.

What is your favourite dark and twisty novel? Let me know in the comments.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

That Monstrous Thing by Amanda Panitch

A new book deal was announced that caught my attention. The deal announcement provided the following description
pitched in the vein of a YA Gone Girl, about a girl who survived her twin brother's murderous rampage only to discover that her dark secret survived as well.
Immediately I was intrigued. I adored Gone Girl, and I am very much looking forward to learning more about this novel. It's set for Spring 2015 release, so there is still a ways to go before anything gets revealed. It is available to add on Goodreads now however, if you wish.

MOVIE/TV

Breaking Bad

So Kelly (from Kellyvision) told me I had to watch this show. I ended up recording the entire series during a holiday marathon that AMC had. I am currently on season 4 and am HOOKED. It's emotional, and you want to save some of these characters from themselves. The downward spiral of Walter White is hard to watch, and each episode fills me with anxiety.

Penny Dreadful

A new TV show from Showtime that is being called 'a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together classic horror origin stories' (according to Showtime's website). It seems to include Frankenstein, Dracula, and Dorian Gray. I've seen it called Once Upon A Time for horror stories, and that immediately grabbed my interest. I am not sure when in 2014 this premieres, but I am excited to check it out.

So what are you obsessed with this week?
