Next up is a new Funko I added to my collection. I had to get this adorable Jack Skellington!

Lastly, I once again had some custom bookmarks made by Vivi at HappyHello over on Etsy. I got her to make some for the new version of A Star Is Born and I LOVE THEM!

I Have Lost My Way by Gayle Forman
Release Date - March 27,  2018
Publisher Website - Penguin Random House
Publisher Social Media - Twitter
Pages -  304 pages
My Rating - 5/5
**received for an honest review from publisher**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
A powerful story of empathy and friendship from the #1 New York Times Bestselling author of If I Stay.

Around the time that Freya loses her voice while recording her debut album, Harun is making plans to run away from everyone he has ever loved, and Nathaniel is arriving in New York City with a backpack, a desperate plan, and nothing left to lose. When a fateful accident draws these three strangers together, their secrets start to unravel as they begin to understand that the way out of their own loss might just lie in helping the others out of theirs.

An emotionally cathartic story of losing love, finding love, and discovering the person you are meant to be, I Have Lost My Way is bestselling author Gayle Forman at her finest.
I Have Lost My Way is essentially three stories being woven into one. It's the story of three people who are each lost in their own way. It's the story of their paths interconnecting and the impact that has on each of their individual stories. It's also the story of finding help, hope, and strength in unlikely places.

Freya, Harun, and Nathaniel are all so different from each other. Their stories, at first, seem like they would have little in common. Feyra is a singer who fears she may have permanently lost her voice. Harun feels he may have lost the man he loves. Nathaniel is both literally and figuratively lost. Their stories interconnect after a chance encounter that is beautifully written and orchestrated. It's the jumping off point of the story, and it felt like a lot of care was taken to get their meeting exactly right. It sets the tone for the rest of the story and does so perfectly.

This story takes place during the coarse of one day. This means that it is quickly paced read and that everything is contained in a way that felt unique to me. There isn't time for things to linger. The characters are reacting in the moment and that makes the story feel all the more real. This is a character driven story and that means that the plot is more emotion based, so this tight time frame worked for the story incredibly well. It also spotlights Gayle's writing because she is able to pack all those emotions into such a contained story.

There are three different points of view that are being juggled. This means that the reader is switching back and forth from the various perspectives. It also means that each of the stories unravels at just the right pace. There is enough mystery in each to hold your interest, and you get the pieces to the puzzle at exactly the right time. It may take some getting used to, especially as flashbacks are introduced into each of the stories being told, but once you're pulled into the story it becomes compelling and impossible to put down.

All of the stories focus on family in some way. Freya's relationship with her sister is a driving force for her story arc, but her entire family is just as important to who her character is. Harun is struggling with the weight of keeping secrets from his family and what that means for his future. Nathaniel, who has the most mysterious and  slow to unravel story arc, has a complicated relationship with his father that is heart of his story. These stories are handled in the adept way that Gayle Forman is known for. These relationships are messy and complicated and that makes them feel all the more authentic. Family really is a huge part of what makes someone who they are and I appreciated it being such a large focus in this novel.

The heartbreak of different kinds of loss is what drives this novel. Instead of allowing the reader, or the characters, to sit in that heartbreak, this novel instead shines a light on the strength that is gained from human connections. There is a strength to be found in helping others, and allowing others to help you. There is a hope that resides in these actions that helps lift you. The kindness people show each other, as cliche as it sounds, can go a long way.  There is something cathartic in knowing that you're not alone, and that someone sees you. Each of these characters is struggling with being alone. They are afraid that revealing things about themselves will leave them untethered and change the way those they love see them. The loneliness each of these characters feel is palpable, as is the relief in finding others who understand.

I Have Lost My Way is an intricately woven story that is filled with everything a Gayle Forman fan could hope for. It hits all the emotional notes you want it to, and leaves you feeling hopeful at the end. It's poignant in a way that so many of Gayle's books are. If you're a fan of Gayle Forman's previous books, or just of contemporary young adult novels in general, I highly recommend picking this one up.

** Side note - just mentioning a potential trigger warning for this novel. There are some suicidal elements in the story that I wasn't expecting, and think others should be aware of **

Waiting On Wednesday ..... I Have Lost My Way

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick is I Have Lost My Way by Gayle Forman

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
A powerful display of empathy and friendship from the #1 New York Times Bestselling author of If I Stay.

Around the time that Freya loses her voice while recording her debut album, Harun is making plans to run away from home to find the boy that he loves, and Nathaniel is arriving in New York City after a family tragedy leaves him isolated on the outskirts of Washington state. After the three of them collide in Central Park, they slowly reveal the parts of their past that they haven't been able to confront, and together, they find their way back to who they're supposed to be.

Told over the course of a single day from three different perspectives, Gayle Forman's newest novel about the power of friendship and being true to who you are is filled with the elegant prose that her fans have come to know and love.
I am a huge Gayle Forman fan and I was so excited to hear that she is releasing another young adult book! This one sounds incredible and I am sure it'll be filled with the usual Gayle Forman feels.
It's release is a perfect pre-birthday gift to me. I cannot wait to read this one while eating some birthday cake.

Summer Reading

It's a proven fact that summer and reading are meant for each other. There's nothing better than a great mystery while by the pool, spending a lazy day lost in a fantastic contemporary or devouring a fantasy while also devouring ice cream.

I am going to let you know what will be in my beach tote this summer, and offer up a few suggestions if you're looking for books to stash in yours!

MY PICKS FOR SUMMER READS

Here are some books you should check out if you haven't already read them! I loved all of them and any of them would make great summer reads.

1 Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

This is a perfect mystery/thriller that will keep you guessing. It's totally the type of book that is pretty much a sunburn waiting to happen. You'll becomes obsessed with Nick, Amy, and what really happened. Afterwards, be sure to check out the movie! One of my favourite book to movie adaptations ever.

2 Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson

A sweet, fun read that has a lot of depth. This one will make you want to create some lists of your own for your friends. I totally made a "How To Have The Best Summer Ever" list for one of my friends after reading this one. You'll fall for the characters, the soundtrack (that can totally be the music of your summer) and Morgan's writing. Her other novels are just as amazing if you're looking for more after finishing this one.

3 Tarnish by Katherine Longshore

The entire Royal Circle 'series' should be on this list. Tarnish just happens to be my favourite as I adore Anne Boleyn and Katherine's portrayal of Anne is one of my favourites (EVER). Her writing is beautiful, and fans of Reign will love the Tudor court drama and romance that graces these pages.

4 Stolen by Lucy Christopher

This book will never not be on a list like this from me. It's one of my most favourite books, and one I tell everyone to read. The letter style format works wonderfully for this story of a girl writing to her kidnapper. It's a clever, well written look at what might be Stockholm Syndrome (or what could be something else entirely). One thing is for sure however, you'll never forget Gemma and Ty's story.

5 Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

I feel like this should come with a warning - you will need tissues to make it through this one. The beautiful story of Will and Lou. A young man who feels he has nothing left to live for after an accident leaves him paralysed and the young woman hired to help him. It's a story that poses many thought provoking questions and is the perfect book for when you're looking for something a little different than the usual beach read.

6 The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

If you're obsessed with all things relating to the royal family, you'll want to devour this book. It's fun, charming, and has just the right amount of romance and drama. An often funny, but touching, love story filled with some unforgettable characters. You'll close this one praying for a companion novel that focuses on Freddie as you'll be dying to enter this world again.

7 The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord

I could easily also recommend Open Road Summer by Emery Lord (so totally read both). The Start Of Me And You earns bonus points for it's clever nod to Pride and Prejudice, and the most adorable romance I've read in a while. It's a feel good read that will leave you feeling happy, and ready to try a few new things yourself.

8 Just One Day/Just One Year by Gayle Forman

This will make you want to pack your bags and head to Europe on a summer vacation. It's a lighter read mixed in with some pretty deep topics and all with the classic Gayle Forman romance. A story of a girl who agrees to spend one day in Paris with a cute guy she just meets ends up being about much more than the romance. Fall in love with Europe, and these characters as you follow first Allyson and then Willem on their journeys to where they are supposed to be.

9 Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

This novel is seriously on fire. It is the next big thing in YA as evident by it's impressive debut on the New York Time's bestseller lists at number one. It's got a movie in the works, and it honestly could be the next big YA series adaptations. A novel that promises that anyone can betray anyone will leave you turning the pages (and most likely sunburned in the process) as you become engrossed in Mare's world.

10 Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Another novel that will always be on these kinds of list for me. A beautifully written take on the Peter Pan tale that asks what if before Wendy entered the picture, Peter was in love with the girl with the crow feathers in her hair (that would be Tiger Lily). An often heartbreaking story that touched me, and remains one of my favourite Peter Pan retellings ever.

WHAT I AM READING

Here are the books I am going to be enjoying in the summer sun! So excited about all of these!

1 Dumplin' by Julie Murphy

Pretty much every person I know that has read this has gushed. Not just a little, but A LOT. I am hoping to get to it ASAP because I am not sure I can wait much longer.

2 Tonight The Streets Are Ours by Leila Sales

I am extremely curious about this one, and I am a sucker for the whole 'one magical night' aspect of the storyline, and am even more intrigued that this one seems to have a twist that perhaps it's not what it first appears. I am sure it'll be fantastic as I've heard nothing by raves about her first novel.

3 The Rest Of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness

Described as Buffy The Vampire Slayer but from the perspective of the 'non chosen' students. It's basically the story of the kids who just want to go to prom without their school being attacked by vampires (or similar) and I think it sounds hilarious. I've never read anything by Patrick Ness before but he made me want to bump this one up during his panel at Book Con this year.

4 The Young Elites by Marie Lu

I have had this one on my list for a long time now, and I keep hearing how amazing it is. I am finally going to read it this summer. I've been told to have wine ready (and possibly chocolate) so I am going to be sure to stock up before diving in.

5 Sweet Filthy Boy by Christina Lauren

I've been told I have to read this from Emilie and Katie. It sounds sexy, fun and a great beach book. I am considering binging all the books that are out right now in time for the next one.

Have you read any of the books I've mentioned? What is on your summer reading list? Read something that I simply must make time to read this summer? Let me know in the comments! I would love some suggestions.

This.Is.Perfect. PERFECT. If you are a Peter Pan fangirl, this is going to make you want to immediately pick up this book. The skull and crossbones, the bloody feather, and the iconic ship all come together to create a nod to the class tale while reminding you this is not your usual Peter Pan.

I Was Here by Gayle Forman (Goodreads)

This book was EVERYTHING I hope it would be. It was filled with emotion, romance and that characterization that Gayle Forman does so well. Be sure to check out my review if you missed it and pick up a copy on Tuesday when it's released.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Cody and Meg were inseparable.
Two peas in a pod.
Until . . . they weren’t anymore.

When her best friend Meg drinks a bottle of industrial-strength cleaner alone in a motel room, Cody is understandably shocked and devastated. She and Meg shared everything—so how was there no warning? But when Cody travels to Meg’s college town to pack up the belongings left behind, she discovers that there’s a lot that Meg never told her. About her old roommates, the sort of people Cody never would have met in her dead-end small town in Washington. About Ben McAllister, the boy with a guitar and a sneer, who broke Meg’s heart. And about an encrypted computer file that Cody can’t open—until she does, and suddenly everything Cody thought she knew about her best friend’s death gets thrown into question.

I Was Here is Gayle Forman at her finest, a taut, emotional, and ultimately redemptive story about redefining the meaning of family and finding a way to move forward even in the face of unspeakable loss.
There is a reason Gayle Forman makes use of the "All.The.Feels" tagline. Her books deliver just that. All of the feelings you can imagine, and often all of them are experienced all at once. I Was Here is no exception to this. It is a brilliant, important, satisfying read that left me emotionally drained, and surprisingly hopeful.

Gayle Forman makes writing appear effortless. Her words come together in such a cohesive, natural way. This talent, however, is the mark of a great writer, and hard work. She makes something so layered and nuanced look easy. She is able to create emotions, and atmosphere with a simple turn of phrase. It's not just enjoyable to read, but inspiring.

Anger and guilt are felt through every interaction, every scene, every sentence of this novel. There is so much anger and guilt for everyone involved. There is anger and guilt because of that anger. Gayle Forman captures what it could feel like to be a 'survivor of suicide'. By this, I am referring to those left behind. There is, often, a massive need for blame for those left behind. Gayle captures the feeling of being angry at the person who died, but feeling guilty that you are angry and so you want to take that anger and shove it onto someone else. You want to blame someone else. They perhaps feel like they should have known and are partially blaming themselves deep down. It creates this perfect storm of feelings. All of this swirls around inside these characters reeking havoc on their emotions and choices. The 'what ifs' plague every single person in Meg's life and it's heartbreaking to see them go through the steps needed to mourn and grieve.

Ben McAllister is a pretty eyed, guitar playing, sneering mess and you will absolutely love him. He is the stuff of book boyfriend dreams and is entirely swoon worthy. His connection to Meg allows for this bond to form with Cody that is entirely mesmerizing. He is wrestling with his own demons, and it makes the progression of the relationship with Cody all the more fulfilling. They understand each other, and offer something that the other needs. The romance aspect of the novel is classic Gayle Forman in all it's messy imperfect perfectness.

Meg comes to life through the other characters. She is told in memories and stories. She burns so vivid and bright during these moments that you truly get to know her. She feels like a vital part of the novel and not just created for plot advancement. She is a fully fledged character and her relationship with Cody is nuanced and rich. We see all the elements of their friendship, including the not so perfect parts. It's this type of characterization that Gayle Forman excels at and she does not disappoint here.

The mystery element of the computer file is just icing on an already delicious cake. It serves to showcase the true plot of the story which is not this mystery but the human emotions behind grief, forgiveness, and strength. She manages to eloquently weave together all of these aspects into an engrossing story.

You won't leave Meg and Cody's story untouched and they'll haunt you long after you've finished reading the final page. This is one I am having a hard time moving on from. I want to mourn a little longer, fall a little bit more in love, and stay with these wonderful characters. A beautiful, sad, hopeful, messy story of grief, death, and most importantly, life. This novel will break your heart, it just happens to also mend it along the way.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

My mailbox was super busy this week. Insanely busy. The kind of busy that makes you incredibly thankful for the books you get to read.

First up is a book that resulted in much fangirling, squealing and generally scaring the heck out of my cat after I opened it. I have already read this book, and it is going to be the book for winter 2015 (perhaps even the book of 2015). It's going to be the new hot thing, that's for sure!

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard (goodreads)

Thank you to Harper Collins Canada for this particular book! So thankful I got to read it!

Next up is a package from Raincoast Books that is from their Spring/Summer Blogger Preview. I was excited to be able to virtually attend, and Raincoast outdid themselves with these amazing swag bags.

The Forgetting by Nicole Maggi (goodreads)
The Truth About Us by Janet Gurtler (goodreads)

Also included was a Fairest poster, and mirror. The mirror is amazing. I also snagged some fun buttons, a lip balm for Katie Finn's Broken Hearts, Fences and Other Things To Mend. Oh, and a bookmark with my name and blog name on it! A big thank you to Melissa at Raincoast for the event and these amazing goodies.

Next up is a book that, surprising nobody, caused me to have a legit meltdown when I had it in my hands.

I Was Here by Gayle Forman (goodreads)

My friend Kelly, from Kellyvision, kindly sent this to me after she had read it. I am itching to start this right now, but have to wait. Hoping to sneak it in over Christmas though! Thanks again, Kelly!

Lastly, I received an amazing Christmas package from my friend Christy, from The Reader Bee. It is filled with all kinds of perfect things! I loved everything.

Along For The Ride by Sarah Dessen (goodreads)
The Kiss of Deception by Mary E Pearson (goodreads)

She also included an adorable ornament that is a blogger with a cat. It's pretty much only missing the glass of wine to be complete. She also sent me a fun wine glass that I fully intend on using this holiday season! Thank you so much, Christy!

Happy weekend, and happy reading!

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

A really quiet week this week. There haven't been any cover reveals that have grabbed me, but there is some other fun things I've been fangirling about.

BOOKS

How To Hang A Witch by Adriana Mather

The Publisher's Weekly blurb announcing this deal made me immediately want to read it.
When heroine Samantha Mather moves to modern-day Salem, Mass., she finds that the crimes of her descendants—who were involved in hanging witches in the town 300 years ago—come back to haunt her.
The author is a descendant of someone involved in the Salem Witch Trials and I like the sound of the spin on this.

TV/MOVIE

Just One Day/Just One Year is becoming Just One Movie

My love of Gayle Forman is pretty well known. I fangirl, a lot. I was THRILLED to learn that Allison and Willem's story is coming to the big screen (via Hollywood Reporter). I need casting news, immediately. I love these books and need for this to be a good adaptation.

Here are my obsessions this week.

BOOK

Jessica Khoury's Aladdin retelling

We don't have a title, or many other details other than what's in the blog post announcement from Jessica's site, but I WANT IT! It had me at female genie (and that she's in love with Aladdin). I already love this premise and cannot wait to read it. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a 2016 release since she already has a 2015 book coming out.

TV/MOVIE

If I Stay advance screening

As part of the BEA fun this year they were giving out The Fault In Our Stars posters and inside there were instructions about getting some advance passes to a screening of If I Stay. I just got my confirmation this week that I will be going to the one in Ottawa! I can't wait to see this movie.

OTHER

Anna and the French Kiss Mug

I stumbled upon this mug on Tumblr. I have no clue if you can buy this mug, or if someone creative just made one for themselves, but *wants*

It says English Accent, French Name, American School. Any Anna fan knows this is one of the ways Anna describes Etienne and I would like nothing more than to drink out of this mug while reading. If you happen to know if there is an Etsy shop, or something selling this please let me know in the comments.

Bookish Tote Bags

Becca from Pivot Book Reviews recently opened an Etsy store for her AMAZING tote bags. They are awesome, and if you are book nerd, you're going to want one to tote around your books.

Here is one she did for Anna and the French Kiss that is adorable.

Bag designed by Becca from Pivot Book Totes on Etsy
Check out her Etsy store for more, and to order your very own! I believe she does custom orders as well, so you can design your own.

BOOK

Cover of Red Queen by Victoria Averyard (goodreads)

Stunning right? Potential favourite cover of the year material. It's simple, and so completely different than any of the covers out there. I am basically in love. The colour design and that bright splash of red blood immediately draw your attention and it pretty much screams for out to pick up this book.

I Was Here by Gayle Forman (goodreads)

I love this cover. It fits with what I would expect for a Gayle Forman cover. I was much more excited about the synopsis that was released. It's intriguing and has me wanting to read this novel even more than I did before.

Travel plans

I have some travel plans coming up! I am going to be visiting Toronto in August and am really looking forward to it. It's already shaping up to be a fun trip and will be a nice break at just the right time.

I am also going to Las Vegas in September! It should also be fun, but slightly more busy as my schedule is packed for that trip. I've never been so I am curious to see it for myself.

Here are my obsessions this week. Pretty much everything else is overshadowed by Gayle Forman's news!

BOOK

Gayle Forman announces Just One Night (goodreads)

I know the ending of Just One Year was a big topic of discussion after it's release. I was happy with the ending. Happy to leave Allyson and Willem where they left off in the story. However, Gayle recently announced that on May 29th she will release an e-novella that continues their journey. I will be getting this as soon as it's available to pre-order on Kobo.

MOVIE

The Amazing Spiderman 2

I loved the first movie in this reinvention of Spiderman. I especially love Andrew Garfield and his portrayal of Peter Parker/Spiderman. The addition of Dane Dehaan as Harry Osborn has only increased my fangirling (because, seriously, he's amazing in everything I've seen him in). I'll be seeing it on Saturday when my friend is off work. In the meantime I will be attempting to avoid spoilers (especially about Gwen Stacy's fate).

OTHER

Chocolate Macaroon tea from David's Tea

I was obsessed with the mere idea of this tea but now that I've tried it I am officially in love. It's sweet and has the perfect blend of chocolate and coconut. It's most likely going to be my main tea for the next while, because it's that good.

Book Expo America

We're now less than one month away to the big event. I can't wait to be on vacation and heading to NYC. Lots of excitement with the schedule being released, and we still have plenty more things to be unveiled as the countdown continues.

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

A smaller obsessions post this week! Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

Bonnie by Christina Schwarz

This book doesn't come out until 2015 and I already WANT it more than anything. Bonnie and Clyde has always fascinated me, and this book sounds amazing. Here are the details from the announcement.
The book is a fictionalized take on Bonnie Parker and the path that led her to become Clyde Barrow’s partner. In Bonnie, Atria said, Schwarz “animates the few known facts” about Parker to create “a plaintive and fast-paced account of a woman destroyed by the lethal combination of boredom and love.”
I kind of like that it's a fictionalized account of Bonnie's story. It's one I am eager to hear more about leading up to it's release date.

Lock and Mori by Heather Petty

The deal announced on Publisher's Weekly's website states that this book
is told from the perspective of 16-year-old Miss James "Mori" Moriarty, who, in looking for an escape from her recent past and spiraling home life, takes classmate Sherlock up on his challenge to solve a murder mystery in Regent's Park.
Immediately intriguing. Is it wrong that I want Mori and Sherlock to fall in love? Because I do! Also, I hope Watson is Sherlock's best friend (it's got to happen). Based on the rest of the information in the press announcement it seems the publisher is expecting big things for this series. Let's hope it gets a fantastic cover. It's already up on Goodreads, if you want to add it.

I Was Here by Gayle Forman

It's no secret that I love Gayle Forman's books. Loved everything she's written so far. Her next one was also announced by Publisher's Weekly, and it's description says that the novel
follows Cody Reynolds in the months following her best friend Meg's suicide, as she delves into Meg's secret life in search of answers.
So I am predicting that this will make me cry. It's a 2015 release, so it'll be a bit before we get our hands on this, but you can already add it on Goodreads. SO EXCITED!

TV/MOVIE

Bonnie and Clyde (TV event)

Keeping with the Bonnie and Clyde theme...

There is going to be a 2 night event 'mini series' airing in December and it looks pretty awesome. Check out the trailer. As mentioned, I've always been fascinated by Bonnie and Clyde's story so I will for sure be checking this out.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
When he opens his eyes, Willem doesn’t know where in the world he is—Prague or Dubrovnik or back in Amsterdam. All he knows is that he is once again alone, and that he needs to find a girl named Lulu. They shared one magical day in Paris, and something about that day—that girl—makes Willem wonder if they aren’t fated to be together. He travels all over the world, from Mexico to India, hoping to reconnect with her. But as months go by and Lulu remains elusive, Willem starts to question if the hand of fate is as strong as he’d thought. . . .

The romantic, emotional companion to Just One Day, this is a story of the choices we make and the accidents that happen—and the happiness we can find when the two intersect
.
Just One Year is a novel that stains you, leaves it's lasting mark and fills you with an incredible wanderlust. It advocates letting those life changing moments influence  you because YOU want them to, and to not be afraid to grasp them when they arrive.

This duology demands to be read together. Neither is complete without the other. Allyson's story needs Willem's point of view and vice versa. At the end of both, I was left with a feeling of deep contentment. I had immersed myself in Allyson and Willem's journey, and had come to care about both of them. I missed Allyson as I followed Willem down his own path, but delighted in getting to know who Willem is. He was the big question mark of Just One Day and this novel fills in those questions with answers. I feel I know him as well as I know Allyson, and that his story was not just something I wanted, but nessicariy to complete Allyson's own. I found myself wanting to know exactly where Allyson was at various moments so that you can experience the excruciating reality of near misses, and the heart breaking moments where Willem's journey takes him not anywhere close to Allyson. Keeping Just One Day close by is recommended.

If Just One Day was Allyson's journey to arriving on Willem's doorstep, Just One Year is Willem's journey to the same. Those months change both of them profoundly, and I waited with held breath to see what would happen when we finally get both of them there. As I want to remain as spoiler free as possible, all I will say is that the ending is exactly what it needs to be. Sometimes it is not about the end point, but the journey. This is one of those times. The people who they are when they both reach that point is going to dictate everything that comes after, and I felt I was leaving both Allyson and Willem in a place that regardless of what may or may not come next for them together, they could find their own double happiness....whatever that happened to be for each of them.

The family connections, especially in Just One Year, are vital to story. Willem's relationship with his mother felt honest, unflinchingly real, and complicated. It's those connections that breaths life into Gayle Forman's novels, and make them so much more than what they seem at first glance. She makes Willem more than you expect because of the relationships defined in this novel. We get to experience a change in him that is so profound it is almost more rewarding than Allyson's transformation.

Catalysts come in many different forms, and sometimes it's a person who sets you on that unexpected path. For both Allyson and Willem their one day together caused ripples that left amazing changes in their wake. It's a look at a time in your life where things are uncertain, you are changing and growing, and sometimes something or someone can open your eyes and help you take flight.

A novel about embracing those little moments, finding out who you currently are, and most importantly, who you want to be. This duology is not one to be missed, and I do recommend reading them together to get the full impact of this romantic, incredibly moving story.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Cover reveal for Lauren Oliver's Panic

If you are a member of Goodreads and happen to have review some of Lauren Oliver's books, you must likely got the same email I did today. Lauren Oliver's newest novel Panic is set to be released in March of 2014. The cover is going to be exclusively revealed by Goodreads on July 17. The novel has an amazing sounding synopsis and bonus points for it being a stand alone. Excited to see the cover on the 17th!

Just One Year by Gayle Forman

So basically I am majorly pining for this book right now. I can not wait to fall back into Allyson and Willem's story, and the fact that it's Willem's point of view just makes me even more desperate to read it. It's one of those fall books that I can not wait to have in my hands.

TV

Summer TV

I normally mourn the loss of my favourite TV shows come May and spend the summer wish they were back. This summer however has a surge of excellent shows that are keeping me entertained. Under The Dome, Dexter, The Killing and soon to be aired The Bridge all are providing a much needed distraction for the summer.

Waiting On Wednesday.... Just One Year

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Just One Year by Gayle Forman

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Can you fall in love in just one day? Can you become a new person? How about in just one year? In JUST ONE DAY and its companion novel JUST ONE YEAR, sheltered American good girl Allyson “LuLu” Healey and easygoing actor Willem De Ruiter are about to find out against a guidebook-worthy array of foreign backdrops. Equal parts romance, coming-of-age-tale, mystery and travel romp (with settings that span from England’s Stratford upon Avon to Paris to Amsterdam to India’s Bollywood) JUST ONE DAY and JUST ONE YEAR show how in looking for someone else, you just might wind up finding yourself.
I loved Just One Day and can't wait to read Willem's side of the story. The wait for this one has seemed long, even though they are being released quite close together.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
A breathtaking journey toward self-discovery and true love, from the author of If I Stay
When sheltered American good girl Allyson "LuLu" Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there’s an undeniable spark. After just one day together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson, until the following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem has left. Over the next year, Allyson embarks on a journey to come to terms with the narrow confines of her life, and through Shakespeare, travel, and a quest for her almost-true-love, to break free of those confines.
My feelings about Just One Day are going to be hard to put into words. This is probably the hardest review I've had to write. The amount of love I have for this brilliant novel can not adequately be put into words. It is a beautiful love story and a journey of self discovery that resonated deeply with me, and made Just One Day an unputdownable captivating read. beautiful love story and a journey of self discovery that resonated deeply with me, and made Just One Day an unputdownable captivating read.

The character of Allyson resonated deeply with me. I am sure this will be constant refrain, but I identified with her so much. Her need to please those around her (even if it means sacrificing what she wants), her desire for something more, and her wanderlust. Her immediate thought process when on the train with Willem heading to Paris would be similar to my own. I felt drawn into the story because I could relate to her so much.

The flirtation and spark between Willem and Allyson is electric. Softly romantic and understatedly sexy, this novel provides many swoon inducing moments. The chemistry and connection between Willem and Allyson leaps off the page. I felt as devastated as Allyson did when it's discovered Willem has vanished, because I was so invested in their love story.

If you at all have travel lust this book will leave you dreaming of your own European jaunt. I seriously felt envious while reading. It gave me wanderlust badly, and I have been looking at Paris and London vacation ideas ever since. Be prepared, you'll be a little obsessed with travelling after finishing. Gayle Forman's descriptions bring out the little moments that stay with you much longer than the bigger, flashier ones do.

The ending is one that makes me ecstatic that Just One Year isn't far off because I wanted to be inside Willem's head so many time during the novel. I wanted to know what he was thinking and feeling. He's the kind of guy who can make a girl feel like he really sees her.

My favourite quote from the novel actually comes from Willem, and if it's any indication Just One Year is going to be filled with deliciously quotable passages.
'I think you're the sort of person who finds money on the ground and waves it in the air and asks if anyone has lost it. I think you cry in movies that aren't even sad because you have a soft heart, though you don't let it show. I think you do things that scare you, and that makes you braver than those adrenaline junkies who bungee-jump of bridges'
This achingly swoon worthy boy that is as much a mystery as he is known to Allyson (and therefore the reader).  He ensnared me with his free spirit and outlook on love, and life.

Another stand out are the secondary characters. In particular Dee. A true friend who becomes Allyson's rock while away at University. He's fantastic, and provides some humour. His outlook, and keen observation skills made him a perfect friend for Allyson during her time of self discovery. I would welcome more of him if he were to pop up in the sequel.

Just One Day is an epic love story that is so much more. The unforgettable story of Allyson and her journey left me stained, and the love story between her and Willem left me breathless. Take the journey and spend a day you won't forget.

Winter Book Buzz...

The new season is upon us, and I was fortunate to read some of this season's hottest upcoming titles in advance. I have selected a few to highlight as ones that I think everyone is going to be buzzing about once they hit shelves.

The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd - release date of January 29

Atmospheric, brilliantly woven, and characters that resonate. This story is going to blow people away, and it's just getting started. A captivating main character who fears her own darkness, and two potential love interests with dark secrets of their own make for a deliciously intense, and thrilling read.

Just One Day by Gayle Forman - release date of January 8

This novel is so lushly descriptive and beautifully written that you'll immediately want to read it again once you've finished. Willem is sure to be on many swoon worthy lists at the end of 2013, and we haven't even had his narration yet (Just One Year being released fall 2013 is from his view point). This story deeply resonated with me, particularly the main character Allyson. You'll fall in love with Willem and Allyson's love story, and be swept away in the brilliant locations, and vividly real characters.

Be sure to check out both of these titles, as they are must reads. What books are on your Winter 2012 must read list?
