Waiting On Wednesday .... Kate In Waiting

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick is Kate In Waiting by Becky Albertalli

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
From #1 New York Times bestselling author and rom-com queen Becky Albertalli comes a buoyant new novel about daring to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight in love, life, and, yes, theater.

Contrary to popular belief, best friends Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker are not codependent. Carpooling to and from theater rehearsals? Environmentally sound and efficient. Consulting each other on every single life decision? Basic good judgment. Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared crushes are more fun anyway.

But when Kate and Andy’s latest long-distance crush shows up at their school, everything goes off script. Matt Olsson is talented and sweet, and Kate likes him. She really likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson.

Turns out, communal crushes aren’t so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson’s friendship.
Becky Albertalli writes super cute contemporary reads. They are filled with loveable characters and swoon worthy romances.

Her newest involves theatre, crushes, and friendship which means I am already obsessed. All of her books have great friendships but this one seems to focus on that element even more than usual which has me excited.

There is a long wait for this one as it doesn't come out until April of 2021, but the good news is that Becky has a lot of books that are out already for you to read while we wait.

Expected release date - April 20, 2021

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Fall in love all over again with the characters from the bestselling Simonverse novels in this highly anticipated epilogue novella. Perfect for fans of Becky Albertalli, the movie Love, Simon, and the new Hulu series spin-off, Love, Victor!

It’s been more than a year since Simon and Blue turned their anonymous online flirtation into an IRL relationship, and just a few months since Abby and Leah’s unforgettable night at senior prom.

Now the Creekwood High crew are first years at different colleges, navigating friendship and romance the way their story began—on email.
Love, Creekwood is a book I never expected to get. It wasn't something that Becky Albertalli thought she would write and we had already been given the gift of Leah On The Offbeat which left our beloved characters on the cusp of college. It felt right and like the natural ending to their story. I didn't think we needed one last check in with these characters and I am so glad to be wrong.

Love, Creekwood is a novella written as emails between the Simonverse characters. It is a short, quick, but emotion packed read that gives fans of these books exactly what they are hoping for.

Becky Albertalli nails the different voices that are used here. They all sound really unique and recognizable as the characters. It felt like the author effortlessly slipped back into Simon's perspective because his voice felt so natural. These may be emails but a sense of who these characters are and what they are dealing with come through this narration style.

The emails in question range from humourous, to beautifully romantic, and everything in between. They are often all of those things at once. It is the achingly romantic parts that will thrill readers most of all. These are some good emails. They are so swoony that I predict many readers will want their own love letters after reading this. It is hard to not be completely enamored with this gift to the fans because ever single word is written for them.

A story that feels like it offers the perfect final chapter on the story of Simon and his friends. It leaves the group in a place that is filled with hope, and maybe some nervous excitement. It doesn't answer every question but that is how it should be. They are still growing, learning, and finding themselves and that is what rings the most true in this story.

Fans will absolutely love this novella that feels like it was written specifically for them. It is filled with everything you love in a Becky Albertalli book and more. If you missed Simon and the gang as much as I did I highly encourage you to pick this up immediately.

Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
New York Times bestselling authors Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed have crafted a resonant, funny, and memorable story about the power of love and resistance.

YES
Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidate—as long as he’s behind the scenes. When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, let’s face it, speaking at all to almost anyone), Jamie’s a choke artist. There’s no way he’d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes…until he meets Maya.

NO
Maya Rehman’s having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating. Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing—with some awkward dude she hardly knows—is beyond her.

MAYBE SO
Going door to door isn’t exactly glamorous, but maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closer—and so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural romance of the century is another thing entirely.
Everyone who has read my reviews knows that I love Becky Albertalli's books. They are some of my favourites. I have no experience with any of Aisha Saeed's writing, but have heard nothing by great things about her books. I was, therefore, excited when it was announced that they would be writing a book together. While I liked parts of Yes No Maybe So, I did not love it as much as I expected to.

The writing styles of the two authors mesh rather well. I believe that since this is dual narration that each author wrote one point of view. It means that the styles could be different as each of the character's voices are different.

Teens wanting to volunteer and get more involved in local politics will probably enjoy this one. I am not an American so while I didn't connect with every part of this aspect, I do feel like our systems are similar enough that I wasn't lost with anything going on and following the news helped fill in the rest. The enthusiasm and heart that these characters put into getting involved is inspiring and I predict it could even inspire readers to get involved themselves. It advocates for getting involved at the local level, and being the force for the change you want in ways that are tangible and practical.

The romance, well very sweet, did not work as well for me as other elements may have. I felt like Jamie and Maya were just really good friends. I don't know if it is because I felt the characters themselves were not as developed and therefore didn't connect with them on their own. I felt at times that the message of the story took over to the determent of the character development. This made it harder for me to be invested in relationship being built between them.

The parts of the characters that I feel readers will relate to the most are the elements that that felt the most authentic to me. Jamie struggling with public speaking and working through how that might impact his future career aspirations. Maya dealing with both the separating of her parents and a changing friendship. It is very much a story of these two teens finding their voices in a way and discovering who they are and these 'background' plots are where any character develop that does happen shines.

I do think that there will be plenty of people who enjoy this book way more than I did. I had a harder time connecting to the story and feeling the chemistry of the characters. I did find the political elements well done and interesting however. It is one that I would definitely recommend checking out for yourself as I think it was probably just a case of it just not working for me specifically.

Becky Albertalli always writes really cute and adorable books. I have pretty much loved everything I have read from her so I was immediately interested in checking out what her new co-written book is about. I haven't read anything from Aisha Saeed yet but I am excited to discover her style and how her and Becky's writing meshes together.

The premise sounds really adorable and it'll be out just in time to read for Valentine's Day.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.

Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.

But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?

Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.

Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.

But what if they can’t quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?

What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?

What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?

But what if it is?
I love books that take me out of a reading slump. Those books that engross you from the first page and make it so that you're entirely invested in the story being told. Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera offer just such a read with their first (and hopefully not last) co-written book. Take a dash of humour, a little New York City magic, a swoon worthy romance, and a lot of heart and you have What If It's Us.

Arthur and Ben both have such distinctive voices. Their characters leap off the page because the authors take such care to bring them to life. Arthur is a Broadway musical loving ray of sunshine who has absolutely no chill. Ben is more laid back, more experienced, and perhaps a little more jaded. The writing styles used for these characters mesh well together to create a very cohesive story. Two authors writing a novel together always has the possibility of feeling clunky but this novel avoids that entirely. It is also impressive that I felt both authors knew both characters really well. The division of writing was done by character point of view chapters, but because both characters were in many of the chapters together both authors had to technically write for each character.

New York City is a character in its own right in this novel. There is something about New York that is a little magical. It's the stuff of movie legend and it translates very well within Author and Ben's story. Becky and Adam show the magic in the smaller moments of living in New York and make the little things sparkle in their own way. The setting makes this story in so many ways and it definitely does not disappoint. This story is absolutely movie ready and a large part of that is because of the setting.

This is a story that may make you believe in the possibility of fate and the magic of putting yourself out there. It's a romance that has all the classic elements of a rom-com. It's got the adorable meet cute. It's got the obstacles standing in the way. It has the big grand gestures. It would be easy for the relationship to not have a lot of heart as a result. The character stuff is there though and that makes the reader's connection to Ben and Arthur that much stronger. You'll want them to end up together so badly and that comes down to the fact that you love each of them as individual characters just as much as their love story.

While the romance does take central focus, there are a bunch of really great friendships that are presented within these pages. Each of the boys has plot points that have nothing to do with the romance and elements that focus on other parts of their lives. Arthur is dealing with the fact that his group dynamic is changing. Ben is dealing with his own breakup's impact on his friend group.  Ben's best friend, Dylan, is a stand out that I predict many people will love. The story becomes this larger, more complex narrative because of these other relationships in a way that is really interesting.

The biggest question surrounding this novel is what kind of ending it would have. Becky Albertalli is known for her more happy, rom-com style endings while Adam is known for endings that rip your heart out and crush it for good measure. While I will not spoil the ending, I will say that it the perfect ending for this story. It's the perfect ending for a novel written by these two authors. It's exactly what the characters and the story itself needs from an ending.

Fans of both of these authors will love their joint venture. It's got everything you love from each of them meshed together in a way that feels effortless. It's an adorable romance with a ton of heart wrapped in a larger story of finding yourself, discovering what you want, and making the choices to get you there.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews)

A huge thank you to Harper Collins Canada for the amazing book mail I received this week. I have been super excited about this one since I first heard about it and cannot read to read it.

I also have received a postcard from Becky Albertalli as a thank you for pre-ordering Leah On The Offbeat. It's super cute and is in fact a scene from the book!

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Leah Burke—girl-band drummer, master of deadpan, and Simon Spier’s best friend from the award-winning Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda—takes center stage in this novel of first love and senior-year angst.

When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat—but real life isn’t always so rhythmic. An anomaly in her friend group, she’s the only child of a young, single mom, and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she’s bisexual, she hasn’t mustered the courage to tell her friends—not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.

So Leah really doesn’t know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture in unexpected ways. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high. It’s hard for Leah to strike the right note while the people she loves are fighting—especially when she realizes she might love one of them more than she ever intended.
If you're anything like me you read and loved Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda when it came out. You probably also wanted a sequel almost immediately upon finishing. When it was announced that we were getting a follow up in the form of a companion novel from Leah's point of view I was very excited. I loved Leah and was eager for her to have her own story. My expectations were high and Leah On The Offbeat shattered them. It's a feel good read that will leave you smiling as you hug your book. It's a fitting send off for these characters, and one that readers will want to return to again and again.

Fans of the first book will delight in the return of many beloved characters. We are given the opportunity to say goodbye to so many of our favourites. They have substantial roles within Leah's story in ways that charmed me completely. There is a ton of adorable Simon interactions in this book simply because he's one of Leah's best friends. I was surprised that even minor characters were given their due in this finale. It's a love letter to the fans of that first book in so many ways and I am confident it'll make readers emotional just for that perspective.

Readers fell in love with Simon while following him on his journey and they can expect to fall in love with Leah during hers. Being inside Leah's head is different than viewing her through Simon's perspective. She's snarky, loyal, fiercely protective of both herself and those she cares about, and complicated. She's imperfect and unsure at times and that makes her so interesting. I can see people labeling her with the 'unlikeable female character' moniker but I feel that's inaccurate and a disservice to her character. She's abrasive at times but that doesn't make her unworthy. She makes mistakes, but that just makes her feel all the more real as a character. I instantly loved her and the journey she navigates in her story.

Leah On The Offbeat, like Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda, is a sort of coming out story. Leah knows who she is but just hasn't shared it with anyone outside of her family. Her bisexuality is addressed on the page in a really plot centric way. Leah is presented as noticing both male and female characters as attractive. There are two characters who could potentially be the love interest, even though it isn't what I would call a love triangle. It is, in my opinion, clear pretty early on who the true love interest is but it clearly showcases Leah's version of bisexuality in a way that suits her character. It's never up for debate, and is something Leah labels herself as throughout the book. It's very much presented as part of her character without being the only thing about her character.

The romance itself is pretty swoon worthy, but just as complicated as you would expect for a character like Leah. There are some delightful moments that exist between the two characters that are filled with flirty undercurrents and the potential for something more. It's a romance that fits who Leah's character is and that means it isn't without its bumps. Those bumps just make the pay off all the most rewarding. I also think the type of journey you should take with Leah, and not know too many spoilers going in.

Becky Albertalli once again crafts a story that is filled with humour, heart, and a swoony romance that is just charming as its predecessor. It'll have fans excited for whatever Becky Albertalli writes next even as they bid farewell to these beloved characters. It hits both the cozy notes of familiarity for those invested in these characters, but also allows Leah's story to be something all its own.

Waiting On Wednesday .... What If It's Us

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick is What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?

Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.

Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.

But what if they can’t quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?

What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?

What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?

But what if it is?
I adore books by both Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera. I was thrilled when it was announced that they were working on a book together. I was even more thrilled when I read the synopsis and discovered it sounds like it'll be a cute read.

The ending of this novel is a source of much speculation among fans. Becky is known for her cute, more rom-com style endings, while Adam is known for having more heartbreaking closings for his novels. Fans are not sure what to expect with this one which only makes the desire to read it that much stronger.

The wait for this is going to be a long one as it doesn't come out until this autumn. We can always re-read Becky and Adam's previous books in the meantime.

2018 Most Anticipated - A Few More

Today is the last book post for this event and I thought I would share three more books that I am excited about in a slightly different format. I am capping it at three simply because it could get out of control otherwise. There are some VERY exciting books coming out in 2018.

Royals by Rachel Hawkins (goodreads)

Meet Daisy Winters. She’s an offbeat sixteen-year-old Floridian with mermaid-red hair; a part time job at a bootleg Walmart, and a perfect older sister who’s nearly engaged to the Crown Prince of Scotland. Daisy has no desire to live in the spotlight, but relentless tabloid attention forces her join Ellie at the relative seclusion of the castle across the pond.

While the dashing young Miles has been appointed to teach Daisy the ropes of being regal, the prince’s roguish younger brother kicks up scandal wherever he goes, and tries his best to take Daisy along for the ride. The crown–and the intriguing Miles–might be trying to make Daisy into a lady . . . but Daisy may just rewrite the royal rulebook to suit herself.

Why I am so excited for this title:

This book was already on my radar before the whole "royal wedding' fever hit but now I am extra excited to read about an American girl marrying a Prince (and the younger sister along for the ride). It sounds adorable and like a fun summer read.

Release date:

May 1, 2018

What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera (goodreads)

What If It’s Us opens as Arthur and Ben meet at the post office as Ben is shipping his ex-boyfriend’s things back to him. They subsequently endure the frustration of knowing there was a missed connection, before the universe pushes them back together again in a series of failed “first” dates.

Why I am so excited for this title:

It's Beck and Adam! Enough said. I cannot wait to see how their writing styles compliment each other. The only question is whether this will be more Becky and provide us with a cute, uplifting ending or if it'll be more Adam and rip our hearts out instead.

Release date:

Fall, 2018

Save This Date by Morgan Matson (goodreads)

Charlie Grant’s older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can’t wait—for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster—all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.

The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster.

There’s the unexpected dog with a penchant for howling, house alarm that won’t stop going off, and a papergirl with a grudge.

There are the relatives who aren’t speaking, the (awful) girl her favorite brother brought home unannounced, and a missing tuxedo.

Not to mention the neighbor who seems to be bent on sabotage and a storm that is bent on drenching everything. The justice of the peace is missing. The band will only play covers. The guests are all crazy. And the wedding planner’s nephew is unexpectedly, distractingly…cute.

Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she’ll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.

Why I am so excited for this title:

A new Morgan Matson book screams summer to me, so I am super excited to have a new one to read by the pool next summer. It also sounds adorable and I love the thought of Morgan writing a family dynamic book. Her friendships are amazing so I am expecting good things from her family connections.

Frenzy Presents Fall 2017/ Winter 2018

The lovely people from Harper Collins Canada invited me to their annual #FrenzyPresents event. It's a blogger event in which we get to learn about all of Harper Collins' upcoming titles and mingle with fellow book lovers. It's one of my most anticipated events because it is always such a fun afternoon. I always feel incredibly thankful to be able to attend, and this year was no exception.

This event focused on the Fall 2017 (and a few Winter 2018) titles that Harper was excited to present to us. There are plenty of books that were already on my radar, and a few that I left wanting to take a closer look at.

I am going to include the entire list, and offer up a few comments on each of the titles.

They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera (goodreads)

Having already read this one I was excited to see it included. It's a wonderful read and I urge you to check out my review that I posted yesterday if you are curious about my thoughts.

Top Ten by Katie Cotugno (goodreads)

I adore Katie Cotugno's novels and I am extra excited about this one! It's premise of two friends looking back at the top ten defining moments of their friendship immediately intrigues me, and the hint of possible romance only sweetens the deal.

If There's No Tomorrow by Jennifer L Armentrout (goodreads)

This was pitched as Jennifer L Armentrout moving away from the romance and more into straight contemporary novels that deal with issues. There is, from what I believe, romance within the story but the issues the characters are facing is the primary story arc.

Kat and Meg Conquer the World by Anna Primaza (goodreads)

This sounded a super cute novel that has a friendship focus. It's also seems like a humourous read that tackles some fandom culture at the same time.

Release by Patrick Ness (goodreads)

This was already a title with a lot of buzz, and the bloggers were very excited about this one. Patrick Ness always delivers for his fans and I predict this will be no exception. It sounds like a novel that will pull at your heart but I suspect it'll be worth it.

Here We Are Now by Jasmine Warga (goodreads)

This is one I didn't know much about going into the event. There was an audible reaction in the room with it was revealed that the rock star who shows up at the main character's door was not a love interest, bur rather the father who isn't in her life.

Three Sides Of A Heart by Various (goodreads)

Fans of love triangles will want to pick up this anthology filled with stories that feature different kinds of love triangles. The selling point for me was that I adore so many of the authors who are contributing, along with the fact that it includes different genres (paranormal, contemporary, science fiction, etc). Add in the fact that it is diverse and it easily became one of my most anticipated reads. I cannot wait to see what these authors have in store.

Love, Life, and the List by Kasie West (goodreads)

Kasie West always has incredibly cute, fluffy, feel good reads. This one sounds especially cute, and offers up the perfect novel for those looking for a little contemporary romance to brighten up their winter.

This Darkness Mine by Minday McGinnis (goodreads)

Mindy McGinnis writes dark, and twisty reads that you devour. This Darkness Mine is no exception. It offers up a unique premise - a girl who was supposed to be a twin discovers that her twin may be insider he all along. There is a little hint of multiple personality disorder that could entire be me reading into things, but I am so excited to unravel this mystery.

Before She Ignites by Jodie Meadows (goodreads)

Dragons! That was the main takeaway from this one. I have read it and enjoyed it. It's a fantasy read that was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to checking out the sequel.

One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake (goodreads)

After the cliffhanger of Three Dark Crowns this one was high up on my list. Not much can be said without giving spoilers but it continues the story of three sisters who are destined to fight to the death to determine who will be Queen. I love the first one so I urge you to pick it up if you haven't already.

The Glass Spare by Lauren DeStefano (goodreads)

Not too many details about this one was given other than that the main character can turn living things into gem stones. This, of course, makes her a target for those who want to use her. It certainly is unique, and Lauren DeStefano has a rather pretty writing style so I predict it'll be an interesting read.

Zenith by Lindsay Cummings and Sasha Alsberg (goodreads)

Bad ass ladies in space is how this one was sold. I've seen this one all of the place recently and think it'll catch a lot of readers attention.

Ace Of Shades by Amanda Foody (goodreads)

I was already excited about Amanda Foody's next book, but I left this event desperate to get my hands on it. It's got everything I love - romance, gangsters, magic and lots more. It's set in what I believe is a sort of Las Vegas type setting and warring crime families seem to be at the heart of the story.

After we heard about these amazing titles we all got a pick a "Blind Date With A Book" book. Wrapped books that had a description on them that teased what was inside. I instantly recognized the symbols on this one from The Gentleman's Guide To Vice and Virtue so I quickly snagged it!

They also had some delicious cookies made for the event. They featured The Upside of Unrequited, The Hate U Give, and Ramona Blue because ......

Julie Murphy, Angie Thomas, and Becky Albertalli were the special guests! We all were so excited to meet them. Julie is hilarious, Angie is so engaging and smart, and Becky is pure sunshine. They all incredible ladies and I was thrilled at the chance to get to hear them speak. I even got to ask a question about having their books turned into movies which lead to Becky revealing a very funny story about one of her days on set. Each of these movies sound like they are going to be incredible and I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend this event with these inspiring authors.

Harper also gifted each of us a swag bag filled with random ARCs, and other goodies. The Wonder Woman candle made me squeal with happiness. It smells AMAZING and is my new obsession. I need more of them. It's such a great scent.

I would like to thank Harper Collins Canada for the invite and all the bloggers who made the afternoon so much fun. A huge thank you to Angie Thomas, Julie Murphy, and Becky Albertalli for being amazing and spending time with all of us bloggers. I cannot wait to attend the next one!

What books from this event piqued your interest? Any that you're dying to read? Let me know in the comments!

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.

Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly's totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie's new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. If Molly can win him over, she'll get her first kiss and she'll get her twin back.

There's only one problem: Molly's coworker, Reid. He's a chubby Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there's absolutely no way Molly could fall for him.

Right?
It may be hard to imagine that Becky Albertalli could capture the magic that was Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda a second time. If you're like me, you've been both excited and nervous about picking up her second novel. I mean, how could it possibly live up to the complete adorableness that is her first Oreo filled offering? I am here to assure you that she, once again, provides all of the swoons and happy sighs in this novel about coming into your own, taking some risks, and not standing in your own way.

Prepare to love Molly Peskin-Suso. You will love her in a completely different way than you love Simon, but you will love her just as much. She's the type of character who instantly connects with the reader because her voice is so vivid and bright. Part of this connection is that Molly is instantly recognizable. She is the reader, or someone the reader knows. She is the type of character that I have wanted to exist in young adult novels for so long, and I am so glad that she has finally arrived.

The cast of secondary characters characters will also win you over. They are all charming and add layers to the story that make it feel all the more real. Molly's parents are incredibly involved in the story which is always welcome. What really adds to the story though is how diverse the cast of characters is. It blends varying kinds of representation within these pages, including some representation that is intersectional, in a way that feels natural. The novel also makes mention of other sexualities than those represented within these pages (specifically by making mention of asexuality). It felt, to me, like the author was showing the reader that even if there wasn't direct representation via one of the characters, people like them (or those they know) exist within this world that the author has created. It made it feel more grounded in reality, as it reflects the communities many of us know and belong to.

The romance in this is filled with some great moments. This novel will make you remember all of the feelings that come with having a crush. The highs and lows are perfectly captured, as is that nervous but excited feeling that happens whenever your crush is near. It is almost a love letter to all those firsts you experience in romance. Your first crush. Your first kiss. Your first rejection. This novel celebrates all of it, even the not so great parts, as part of the process. Molly's journey isn't just one of finding a boyfriend, it is one of opening yourself up even if it means rejection. It is about the risk sometimes being worth it, but mostly it is about growing up and changing.

The relationship between Molly and Cassie is one of the stand outs of this novel. It is used to show the excitement and uncertainty teens feel as they grow up. Molly senses the relationship between her and Cassie changing as her sister starts to experience new things and reacts strongly to the changes. It reminded me of growing away from friends as you grow older because you're changing so much during this time, and often not at the same pace. It means your relationships change and that can be unsettling. It offers reassurance that it is something we all go through and that message, I believe, will be comforting for those going through similar 'growing pains' in their relationships.

Fans of Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda will devour this novel in one sitting and I predict it'll charm those not yet acquainted with Becky's first novel as well. The Upside Of Unrequited will have you craving Mini Eggs the way you craved Oreos while reading Simon and leave you with the biggest smile on your face. Becky Albertalli is quickly becoming the go to author for fuzzy warming feeling reads for me. She, once again, hits it out of the park with this giddy, feel good, offering.

Waiting on Wednesday ... The Upside of Unrequited

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
“I don’t entirely understand how anyone gets a boyfriend. Or a girlfriend. It just seems like the most impossible odds. You have to have a crush on the exact right person at the exact right moment. And they have to like you back.”

What does a sixteen-year-old girl have to do to kiss a boy? Molly Peskin-Suso wishes she knew. She’s crushed on twenty-six guys…but has kissed exactly none. Her twin sister Cassie’s advice to “just go for it” and “take a risk” isn’t that helpful. It’s easy for her to say: she’s had flings with lots of girls. She’s fearless and effortlessly svelte, while Molly is introverted and what their grandma calls zaftig.

Then Cassie meets Mina, and for the first time ever, Cassie is falling in love. While Molly is happy for her twin, she can’t help but feel lonelier than ever. But Cassie and Mina are determined to end Molly’s string of unrequited crushes once and for all. They decide to set her up with Mina’s friend Will, who is ridiculously good-looking, flirty, and seems to be into Molly. Perfect, right? But as Molly spends more time with Reid, her cute, nerdy co-worker, her feelings get all kinds of complicated. Now she has to decide whether to follow everyone’s advice…or follow her own heart.
Ever since Becky Albertalli described this as a love letter to those who don't get love letters I have wanted to get my hands on this one. Her first book was incredible and I have been eager to read whatever she writes next. I am thrilled that this sounds so amazing and predict another happy sigh inducing read.

Expected release date - April 11,  2017

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

This Weekly Obsessions post will not including everything that I am excited about from this week because it only includes things that were released before I left for ALA (so it is totally missing the title of the third Red Queen book for example) but anything else will be included next weekend.

BOOK

Cover for The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli (goodreads)

I am pretty sure almost everyone adored Becky's first book (which if you don't know is Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda). We've all be eagerly anticipating her next book and we have a cover!!

Becky has called this a love letter to all those who don't get love letters which has made me want to read it even more! I am really looking forward to this and how cute is that cover?! It matches the one for her first book in a way while being its own thing. I cannot wait to meet Molly!

OTHER

Apollo Peak Cat Wine

This amazingness was brought to my attention thanks to Twitter. Aria is already way too interested in my wine so I have may to pick this up as a treat for her.

The Apollo Peak Company makes all natural wine that is good for your cat. That's right - wine for your cat!! It is made from beets, and catnip and it sounds like something my cat would REALLY love. I am going to have to get her some and try it and report back on the blog.

First up they have The Pinot Meow which is their take on a red wine:

Next up is MosCATo which is their take on a white wine

It's seriously too cute! I also love that it is basically just catnip and beets (which are apparently good for cats) so it sounds healthy for them. It is something cat lovers may want to try if you enjoy wine like I do and want your feline friend to enjoy a treat too!

What are you obsessed with this week?

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.
Do you like books with cookies, romance, realistic characters, and delightful banter and snark? Do you also like mysteries, and stories about family and friendships? If you answered yes to any of the above you need to read Simon VS. The Homo Sapiens Agenda. If you answered no, I still think you need to read this book. Becky Albertalli has written a funny, feel good début novel that surprises you with it's heart and depth.

Becky Albertalli's clearly gifted at creating characters. This is a character driven story in all forms. The mystery of who Blue is ends up being secondary to us discovering who Simon is. His voice is so resonate that it's hard to believe he's not a living, breathing teenager. The added detail of the secondary characters having their own story arcs that are separate from Simon was one of my favourite aspects of this novel. We may not see all of their journey, because we are busy following Simon on his, but Becky makes sure we know there is plenty going on behind the scenes. It added an extra layer of realism to the story that is sometimes missing from stories like this.

Family is an important part of Simon's life, and therefore the story. It never fails to impress me when a family is predominately featured in a YA novel. This novel takes it one step further and gives Simon a loving, functional, if imperfect family. They support each other, they fight with each other, but at the end of it all they love each other.

There is a line where Simon muses that everyone should have to 'come out' as gay, straight, bisexual, etc in the most awkward way possible. This, for me, sums up this book more than anything. This book asks questions about how and why we perceive people the way we do. The way we limit them with these classifications and the notion that there shouldn't be something as arbitrary as a default when it comes to something as complex as human beings. Plenty of the characters surprise each other in various ways during the course of the novel, and this gets to the heart of the story. People can surprise us, love can surprise us, and it can be a beautiful thing.

Prepare to be a sighing, giggling, flailing mess over the romance in this one. It's adorable, particularly because it involves the friends before romance trope. This always works best, especially for me, because it allows the characters to learn about each other, form a connection that feels true before having them fall in love. Through email correspondence we see them flirt, discuss the deliciousness of an all Oreo diet, the hardships of coming out, and everything in between. When Blue is finally revealed and they are together the sparks that fly feel inevitable and warranted. The tension between them feels earned.

Those who are fans of neat, tidy endings will appreciate the bow that is wrapped around the ending of this one. This adorable story brings to mind those romantic comedies where even if everything isn't exactly how you want it to be in the end, you still walk away smiling and giddy.

Have some Oreos and milk near by as you'll immediately be craving them as you devour this novel that is just as sweet as those delicious cookies. You'll fall in love with Simon, his family, his friends and Blue during the course this squeal worthy read, and leave it wanting to be a little kinder to those around you.
