2020 Most Anticipated - Marisol from Harper Collins Canada

Today I have Marisol from Harper Collins Canada stopping by to take part in my 2019 Most Anticipated Event. Marisol shares the books coming from Harper Collins next year that she thinks should be on your radar! There are some incredible titles on this list so be prepared to add a bunch to your own 'to be read' lists. A huge thank you to Marisol for taking the time to write this post. You can talk about all of these books with the Harper Collins Canada team on Twitter at @hccfrenzy!

Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen – January 7, 2020
Who doesn’t love books that take us to new places? Loveboat, Taipei follows Chinese-American girl Ever Wong who is sent from Ohio to Taiwan to learn Mandarin for the summer. Expecting a strict, educational program, Ever is pleasantly surprised when she finds Loveboat in its place: an unchaperoned free-for-all where the fun (and romance) never stops. A charming #ownvoices novel that’s Sarah Dessen meets Crazy Rich Asians, this book is incredibly honest in its portrayal of family, friends, and teenage rebellion – and I am HERE FOR IT!

Infinity Son by Adam Silvera – January 14, 2020
I absolutely adored They Both Die at the End, so I was super excited when I found out that Adam had a new novel coming! This one is a gritty, fast-paced fantasy (yes, Adam is writing fantasy now and it’s amazing!) about a magical turf war generations in the making. I love that Adam is committed to writing LatinX and queer characters, and I cannot wait to see how he integrates them in what is sure to be one of this year’s biggest books!

Not So Pure and Simple by Lamar Giles – January 21, 2020
No one is pure, and life is definitely not simple! I love this book for the questions it raises about masculinity, and what it means to be a “real” man. Incredibly nuanced in the way it approaches teen relationships, the diversity of this book made me an instant fan, but it was the story itself that won me over completely!

Almost American Girl by Robin Ha – January 28, 2020
Anyone who says they don’t like graphic novels NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK! In this graphic memoir, Robin Ha revisits what it was like moving from Seoul to Alabama as a teen. Unable to speak English and suffering from extreme culture shock, Robin struggled to fit in. Heartbreaking and honest, the story is made all the more poignant by Robin’s stunning illustrations and speaks to art’s capacity for bridging cultural divides – and even saving lives.

Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed – February 4, 2020
Both Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed?! Sign me UP! I love the premise of this novel: two teens become unexpectedly involved in their town’s politics, only to become entangled in the cross-cultural romance of the century. This definitely sounds like something that would happen to me. I can’t wait to get my hands on this romcom!

Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold – February 25, 2020
A darkly feminist retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, I am OBSESSED with this book and can’t wait for it to hit shelves. I love adaptations of fairy tales and folklore, and this one really brings the drama. If you loved Elana’s last book, Damsel, do not miss Red Hood!

The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel – February 26, 2020
The cover alone on this is so stunning I had to pick it up! Taking place in New York, British Columbia, and at sea, this beautifully written novel is about money, ghosts, morality, and a Ponzi scheme. The interweaving storylines and alternating points of view bring readers on a journey that haunts long after the book is finished. Add this one to your TBR immediately!

The Fire Never Goes Out by Novelle Stevenson – March 3, 2020
I’m a huge fan of both memoirs and comics, so this one is right up my alley! The Fire Never Goes Out is an illustrated memoir by the creator of Nimona and Lumberjanes that spans eight years of Noelle’s life, following her creative journey, coming out, and mental health struggles. Witty and full of wisdom, I literally have a space saved on my shelf for the finished book. I can’t wait to see Noelle’s incredible illustrations on paper!

My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell – March 10, 2020
I was instantly hooked on this one! Exploring the psychological trauma of a relationship between a teenage girl and her magnetic and manipulative teacher, this  is propulsive, explosive, and thought-provoking, particularly in the age of #MeToo. Lots to dig into with a book club!

Imagine Me by Tahereh Mafi – March 31, 2020
If you haven’t gotten into the Shatter Me series yet, there’s still time before the final installment, Imagine Me, hits shelves this March! I love a good dystopian, and Imagine Me is no exception! Following Juliette Ferrars (now Ella) who is fueled by rage, justice, and love, the final book in the series may just bring down the Reestablishment – permanently!

Rules for Being a Girl by Candace Bushnell and Katie Cotugno – April 7, 2020
Smart and funny and heart wrenching, this novel has everything I want! Following one girl’s crusade to expose sexism at her school after a run-in with a predatory teacher, this #MeToo story is incredibly timely and manages to explore its more serious topics with grace, humour, and a healthy dose of feminism. The perfect book for starting an important discussion, Rules for Being a Girl is SO good – a must-read for today’s young women!

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo – May 5, 2020
The moment I found out Elizabeth Acevedo had a new book coming out, it was on my TBR! This is such a beautiful and bittersweet novel, it completely blew me away and I can’t wait for more people to pick it up! Clap When You Land follows two sisters, one in New York and the other, in the Dominican Republic, who must deal with the devastating loss of their father in a plane crash. But there’s an unexpected twist: neither of them knew the other one existed.

The Betrothed by Kiera Cass – May 5, 2020
Royalty, castles, and a mysterious stranger? Count me in! If the incredible cover for this book hasn’t already drawn you in, the world of courtly romance and intrigue that Hollis Brite inhabits definitely will! But with so much at stake and her marriage to the king on the line, Hollis begins to wonder, is there more to life outside the palace walls?

Parachutes by Kelly Yang – May 26, 2020
There is so much to love about this book, including that it gave me major Gossip Girl vibes! The title refers to parachute kids: wealthy Asian teenagers, whose parents send them to study in the US and stay with typical American families. Although Claire and her American host sister Dani feel like they couldn’t be more different, they come to discover they have more in common than anyone would’ve guessed. Touching on serious issues ranging from racism and assault to love and family, this book packs a punch!

Stay Gold by Tobly McSmith – May 26, 2020
This book is so incredible and I’m positive there’s nothing else out there like it! Written by a transgender author, this teen love story follows a transgender boy and cisgender girl and draws from the author’s own personal experiences. While there are more and more books featuring transgender characters, very few are actually written by transgender authors. Tobly’s characters feel wholly authentic, and it is literally impossible not to fall in love with them!

A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown – June 2, 2020
Calling all fans of Children of Blood and Bone! Fantasies inspired by different cultures are among my absolute favourites, and A Song of Wraith and Ruin is no exception! This is an immersive fantasy based on West African folklore. If you love highly developed worlds and mythology, you NEED to add this book to your TBR!

You Say it First by Katie Cotugno – June 16, 2020
Who knew I was such a romantic? You Say It First is about two teens from different sides of the political spectrum who fall in love after a voter registration call turns into a long-distance romance. I can’t wait for more people to read this book! It’s so cute, and the relationship between the characters feels so real. Although they come from completely different backgrounds, the candid conversations between them really highlight how sometimes all it takes is one special person to change us forever.

Faith: Taking Flight by Julie Murphy – July 7, 2020
Julie Murphy is back with the first in a two-book series that tells the origin story of Faith, the first plus-sized superhero! I am so excited to see a book like this on the market. It has all Julie’s hallmarks (body positivity, complex relationships, a queer love story) and a TON of fast-paced, awesome action. I fell in love with this one the moment I saw the cover!

The Woman Before Wallis by Bryn Turnbull – July 21, 2020
If you’re a fan of Netflix’s The Crown, this book is definitely for you! By now, chances are you’re familiar with Wallis Simpson, Prince Edward’s love interest and arguably one of the most notorious women in Britain’s history. This book goes back even further in their story and introduces the first American woman Edward loved: Thelma Furness, sister to the first Gloria Vanderbilt. Steeped in royalty, riches, and drama, this book totally raises the bar for historical fiction and definitely helped me get over my post-Crown malaise!

What books from this list are you most excited to read next year? Let me know in the comments.

Come back next week for more books on my 2020 most anticipated list.

2018 Most Anticipated - Ashley From Harper Collins Canada

Today I have  Ashley from Harper Collins Canada stopping by with her list of Harper Collins books that should be on your radar for 2018. I love having guest posts as it ensures even more  books are spotlighted during this event.

Ashley has some pretty amazing ones on her list, and a few that I am personally very excited about.

Each title links to more information about the book (including a synopsis where available).

Here is Ashley's Most Anticipated Of 2018:

Everless by Sara Holland (January 2, 2018)

Definitely one of the best YA fantasy books you’ll read in 2018. It’s essentially Red Queen meets Downton Abbey (so, amazing) and the first in a duology!

The Defiant by Lesley Livingston (January 23, 2018)

The sequel to Lesley Livingston’s The Valiant is almost here. In this one, Fallon and her warrior sisters are thrust into a conflict with a rival gladiator academy.

The Queens Rising by Rebecca Ross (February 6, 2018)

Another fantasy to keep your eye on in 2018! Brianna is an outcast and finds herself bound to a disgraced lord. She gets tangled up in the lord’s plot to overthrow the current king, and has to choose between passion and blood.

Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston (February 27, 2018)

This smart and funny sci-fi adventure is inspired by the story of Anastasia! Also perfect for fans of Six of Crows.

Restore Me by Tahereh Mafi (March 6, 2018)

A new book from Tahereh Mafi!!!!!! Enough said.

Here So Far Away by Hadley Dyer (March 20, 2018)

I just adored this book! This heartwarming—and heartbreaking—novel will pull you in and keep you there until you reach the very last page. George (real name: Frances Warren) is a down-to-earth, witty, and unique character which makes this book such an honest and refreshing read.

Sleight by Jennifer Sommersby (April 3, 2018)

This thrilling and mysterious novel is set in a circus—the one that Genevieve Flannery grew up in. Genevieve is accustomed to this life… until the evening that she and her mother are performing an aerial routine they’ve done hundreds of times, and her mother falls to her death.

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli (April 24, 2018)

A sequel to one of my favourite books of all time? Yes, please! Leah on the Offbeat follows Simon’s (as in Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, as in Love, Simon, as in SOON TO BE IN THEATRES!) BFF Leah. You’ll love her just as much, trust me.

9 Days & 9 Nights by Katie Cotugno (May 1, 2018)

The perfect summer read AKA the sequel to 99 Days is here (and it’s Katie Cotugno)!! Molly Barlow sets off on a romantic European vacation with her new boyfriend… only to run into her ex, Gabe. Will Molly finally get her happy ending?! Find out!

Puddin'  by Julie Murphy (May 8, 2018)

This feel-good, badass sequel to the beloved Dumplin’ is full of friendship, love and chasing your dreams. It can be read as a standalone, but realistically, why wouldn’t you want to read them both? Julie Murphy is the best.

War Storm by Victoria Aveyard (May 15, 2018)

The Red Queen series is coming to an end!!! I can’t wait to find out what happens to Mare, and OMG to have this beautiful series on my shelf.

Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton (July 31, 2018)

After years of training to hunt witches, Mia Rose discovers that she possesses magic. This is the feminist fantasy (to-be trilogy) that you NEED in your life.

What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera (October 9, 2018)

I know next-to-nothing about this book, but what more do we need to know than that it’s written by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera?

I want to read SO many of these! I am especially excited about What If It's Us! I cannot wait to see what a book by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera is like. Becky is known for cute romance stories with a lot of heart. Adam is known for books that rip out your heart so it'll be interesting to see how the two mix.

Any of these on your own 2018 Most Anticipated List? Let me know in the comments.

Frenzy Presents Fall 2017/ Winter 2018

The lovely people from Harper Collins Canada invited me to their annual #FrenzyPresents event. It's a blogger event in which we get to learn about all of Harper Collins' upcoming titles and mingle with fellow book lovers. It's one of my most anticipated events because it is always such a fun afternoon. I always feel incredibly thankful to be able to attend, and this year was no exception.

This event focused on the Fall 2017 (and a few Winter 2018) titles that Harper was excited to present to us. There are plenty of books that were already on my radar, and a few that I left wanting to take a closer look at.

I am going to include the entire list, and offer up a few comments on each of the titles.

They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera (goodreads)

Having already read this one I was excited to see it included. It's a wonderful read and I urge you to check out my review that I posted yesterday if you are curious about my thoughts.

Top Ten by Katie Cotugno (goodreads)

I adore Katie Cotugno's novels and I am extra excited about this one! It's premise of two friends looking back at the top ten defining moments of their friendship immediately intrigues me, and the hint of possible romance only sweetens the deal.

If There's No Tomorrow by Jennifer L Armentrout (goodreads)

This was pitched as Jennifer L Armentrout moving away from the romance and more into straight contemporary novels that deal with issues. There is, from what I believe, romance within the story but the issues the characters are facing is the primary story arc.

Kat and Meg Conquer the World by Anna Primaza (goodreads)

This sounded a super cute novel that has a friendship focus. It's also seems like a humourous read that tackles some fandom culture at the same time.

Release by Patrick Ness (goodreads)

This was already a title with a lot of buzz, and the bloggers were very excited about this one. Patrick Ness always delivers for his fans and I predict this will be no exception. It sounds like a novel that will pull at your heart but I suspect it'll be worth it.

Here We Are Now by Jasmine Warga (goodreads)

This is one I didn't know much about going into the event. There was an audible reaction in the room with it was revealed that the rock star who shows up at the main character's door was not a love interest, bur rather the father who isn't in her life.

Three Sides Of A Heart by Various (goodreads)

Fans of love triangles will want to pick up this anthology filled with stories that feature different kinds of love triangles. The selling point for me was that I adore so many of the authors who are contributing, along with the fact that it includes different genres (paranormal, contemporary, science fiction, etc). Add in the fact that it is diverse and it easily became one of my most anticipated reads. I cannot wait to see what these authors have in store.

Love, Life, and the List by Kasie West (goodreads)

Kasie West always has incredibly cute, fluffy, feel good reads. This one sounds especially cute, and offers up the perfect novel for those looking for a little contemporary romance to brighten up their winter.

This Darkness Mine by Minday McGinnis (goodreads)

Mindy McGinnis writes dark, and twisty reads that you devour. This Darkness Mine is no exception. It offers up a unique premise - a girl who was supposed to be a twin discovers that her twin may be insider he all along. There is a little hint of multiple personality disorder that could entire be me reading into things, but I am so excited to unravel this mystery.

Before She Ignites by Jodie Meadows (goodreads)

Dragons! That was the main takeaway from this one. I have read it and enjoyed it. It's a fantasy read that was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to checking out the sequel.

One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake (goodreads)

After the cliffhanger of Three Dark Crowns this one was high up on my list. Not much can be said without giving spoilers but it continues the story of three sisters who are destined to fight to the death to determine who will be Queen. I love the first one so I urge you to pick it up if you haven't already.

The Glass Spare by Lauren DeStefano (goodreads)

Not too many details about this one was given other than that the main character can turn living things into gem stones. This, of course, makes her a target for those who want to use her. It certainly is unique, and Lauren DeStefano has a rather pretty writing style so I predict it'll be an interesting read.

Zenith by Lindsay Cummings and Sasha Alsberg (goodreads)

Bad ass ladies in space is how this one was sold. I've seen this one all of the place recently and think it'll catch a lot of readers attention.

Ace Of Shades by Amanda Foody (goodreads)

I was already excited about Amanda Foody's next book, but I left this event desperate to get my hands on it. It's got everything I love - romance, gangsters, magic and lots more. It's set in what I believe is a sort of Las Vegas type setting and warring crime families seem to be at the heart of the story.

After we heard about these amazing titles we all got a pick a "Blind Date With A Book" book. Wrapped books that had a description on them that teased what was inside. I instantly recognized the symbols on this one from The Gentleman's Guide To Vice and Virtue so I quickly snagged it!

They also had some delicious cookies made for the event. They featured The Upside of Unrequited, The Hate U Give, and Ramona Blue because ......

Julie Murphy, Angie Thomas, and Becky Albertalli were the special guests! We all were so excited to meet them. Julie is hilarious, Angie is so engaging and smart, and Becky is pure sunshine. They all incredible ladies and I was thrilled at the chance to get to hear them speak. I even got to ask a question about having their books turned into movies which lead to Becky revealing a very funny story about one of her days on set. Each of these movies sound like they are going to be incredible and I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend this event with these inspiring authors.

Harper also gifted each of us a swag bag filled with random ARCs, and other goodies. The Wonder Woman candle made me squeal with happiness. It smells AMAZING and is my new obsession. I need more of them. It's such a great scent.

I would like to thank Harper Collins Canada for the invite and all the bloggers who made the afternoon so much fun. A huge thank you to Angie Thomas, Julie Murphy, and Becky Albertalli for being amazing and spending time with all of us bloggers. I cannot wait to attend the next one!

What books from this event piqued your interest? Any that you're dying to read? Let me know in the comments!

#FrenzyPresents Spring/Summer Edition Recap

I was recently invited to attend a bookish event at Harper Collins Canada. It was the #FrenzyPresents Spring/Summer blogger preview.

I trekked to Toronto and the Harper Collins office for an afternoon of book nerd heaven. The lovely people at Harper discussed the spring/summer titles they were excited about and made all of the bloggers to be read lists grow considerably by the end of the afternoon.

These events are always fun because you get to mee fellow book lovers, and talk about your favourites. It is always a fun, and informative afternoon and this was no exception.

There were plenty of books discussed and I am going to highlight each of them here. They all link to their Goodreads page for easy addition to your to be read list!

The discussed three non fiction books at the event. These included ...

Unfiltered by Lily Collins
Almost Adulting by Arden Rose
How Dare The Sun Rise by Sandra Uwiringiyimana

The other novels were all varying young adult genres (dystopian, contemporary, horror, etc).

Spindle Fire by Lexa Hillyer

A fairytale retelling (Sleeping Beauty) that sounds really awesome!

The Black Witch by  Laurie Forest

I love witch stories and this one has an amazing cover (and also happens to be over 600 pages!)

Thick As Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner

A ton of people are excited for this series continuation. I haven't read the first ones, but it piqued by interest.

Avenged by Amy Tintera

This is one of many sequels. The Harper girls did not want to spoil so they just lightly teased each of these books.

The Scattering by Kimberly McCreight

I am super excited about this one. I read the first one and it was such a fun thrill ride. It was unexpected in the best possible way.

The Crown's Fate by Evelyn Skye

Another sequel that just got lightly teased. These novels have incredible covers!

Our Dark Duet by Victoria Schwab

This is another one of my most anticipated. I loved This Savage Song and these books where humans can be monsters, and monsters want to be human is classic Victoria Schwab (this means it is well written, heartbreaking, and wonderful).

Midnight At The Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Jodi Lynn Anderson is one of my favourite authors. Her wiritng is lush and beautiful. Tiger Lily is one of my all time favourite novels and I am so excited to dive into this story of three girls across different timelines whose stories interconnect.

The Gentleman's Guide To Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

This is the big gay historical road trip that you never knew you wanted. This book caused quite the buzz and I cannot wait to devour my copy!

House of Furies by  Madeleine Roux

The lone horror title of the group. It was mentioned as being for fans of Penny Dreadful and American Horror Story so I was, obviously, intrigued.

The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson

This was the lone dystopian on the list. People looking for their dystopian fix will want to check out this title.

Dividing Eden by Joelle Charbonneau

Pitched as being for fans of Red Queen, this is the story of twins who end up having to complete for the crown when they unexpectedly find themselves in the position of having to rule. It sounds great, and has an amazing cover.

Zenith by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings

Badass ladies in space! This is one I feel has been getting a lot of buzz recently and sounds really fun.

Romancing The Throne by  Nadine Jolie Courtney

This is basically Kate and Pippa Middleton if Pippa had dated Prince William first. Two sisters meet a Prince at their school and drama ensues when they each fall for him.

I See London, I See France by Sarah Mlynowski

A fun Eurotrip read that sounds perfect for summer. Two friends go on a trip through Europe that is filled with romance, drama and more.

Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy

Pretty sure this is another title that everyone is anticipating. It sounds incredible and is probably on your to be read list already.

Grit by Gillian French

The story of a girl who has earned herself as reputation as 'that' girl in her town. Her best friend goes missing and there are plenty of secrets to unravel in this one. It sounds great!

Eliza And Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

A story of a girl who anonymously writes a very popular webcomic series and the aftermath of what happens we her identity is revealed.

Me (and) Me by  Alice Kuipers

A story of 'sliding doors' story where a girl has to decide between saving two different people and the aftermath/consequences of each choice.

That Thing We Call A Heart by Sheba Karim

A story of a Pakistani-American girl who is falling in love while her and her best friend are drifting apart. It seems like there might be some secrets in this one and the main character is not often found in young adult novels.

It's Not Like It's A Secret by Misa Sugiura

This story seems to have a lot going on in it. There are family secrets. The main character is discovering that she is attracted to other girls, and lots more.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

I reviewed this one recently on the blog and can vouch for its amazingness. An important, and timely, book that is incredibly well written. Starr's story is one that stays with you and I urge you to pick this one up!

The Upside Of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

I feel like everyone is super excited for this. Becky's first novel was a huge hit with readers and I anticipate this one will be just as well received.

Fireworks by Katie Cotugno

If you were a fan of boy bands (or girl bands) of the 90s this is the book for you. Two friends complete to be part of a girl band that is being formed with plenty of drama arising as a result.

After hearing about all these incredible sounding upcoming books we all got to mingle and chat. I love getting to chat with Suman (who is the main contact for bloggers reviewing young adult novels). I also loved getting to see some of the Toronto bloggers I am friends with!

We were all gifted a goodie bag filled with amazing presents.

Some amazing buttons, and a few fun postcards (among other goodies). I love the button especially!

Each bag had 4 ARCs included. My batch had Romancing The Throne, I See London I See France, Ramona Blue and Dividing Eden. These were high on my to be read list so I was very happy with my choice of goodie bag. I cannot wait to read all of these.

Also included was this incredible Red Queen map!

I am going to have to get this framed and hang it up on my wall. I love it so much.

It was a whirlwind trip to Toronto but so worth it. I am eagerly awaiting the next #FrenzyPresents event. I cannot wait to see everyone again and hear all about the upcoming titles.

Thank you to Suman, the rest of the Harper Collins staff, and all the bloggers who made it a fun (and bookish) afternoon!

2017 Most Anticipated - HarperCollins Canada

Today I have the lovely Suman and Kaiti from HarperCollins Canada stopping by the blog sharing their own most anticipated list. These are all titles that should be on your radar next year. Each of them sound pretty amazing and there is a wide variety of choices so I am pretty sure something will catch your eye.

A huge thank you to them both for taking the time to write up this post! You both are the greatest!

Suman and Kaiti’s Most Anticipated Books of 2017

We publish a lot of books every year so it’s always a bit difficult to select just a few that we’re excited for, but, hey, we tried!

SS = Suman (it rhymes with Susan) Seewat
KV = Kaitlyn Vincent

We Were On a Break by Lindsey Kelk – January 3, 2017

Lindsey Kelk’s new standalone novel pays homage to one of my favourite TV shows. It is also classic Kelk – funny, relatable, infuriating and heartwarming. Adam and Liv are like two of your best friends who refuse to listen to anything you say, no matter how hard you try to shake some sense into them.

And, for the record, they may have been on a break but Ross was still in the wrong. –KV

Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth – January 17, 2017

Veronica Roth. Space. Divergent. Star Wars. There are so many things I could say about Carve the Mark but all I can really put down on paper is:  !!!!!!!!
 –KV

A note from Suman: I GOT TO READ THIS BOOK A FEW MONTHS AGO AND GUESS WHAT??? IT’S VERY GOOD.

The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O’Neill – February 7, 2017

Kathy is very familiar with how much I love Heather O’Neill’s work, but for those of you who aren’t, I LOVE HER BOOKS. A LOT. I’m not alone – her debut novel, Lullabies for Little Criminals, won Canada Reads in 2007. Her following works were consecutively shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller prize: The Girl Who Was Saturday Night in 2014 and Daydreams of Angels in 2015. In The Lonely Hearts Hotel, Heather is at her darkest and most magical, sharing a spellbinding story of two orphans whose unusual magnetism and talent leads them towards a future they only dreamed about. –KV

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas – February 28, 2017

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, The Hate U Give is easily my most-anticipated YA read this year. It follows sixteen-year-old Starr Carter after she witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. I read this book in one sitting on my phone on a Saturday night. I couldn’t stop reading it. It’s an important story written by an immensely talented writer that I hope everyone reads. –SS

A Simple Favour by Darcey Bell – March 21, 2017

For fans of Gone Girl, A Simple Favour is a chilling debut thriller that focuses on three characters: a popular blogger, her best friend who disappears suddenly, and the latter’s husband. It’s full of twists, betrayals and “Whaaaaaaaat just happened?!?!” moments. This is a great vacation or weekend read! –SS

Miss You by Kate Eberon – April 4, 2017

Miss You by Kate Eberlen is a cure for any reader who hasn’t fallen in love with a book since the first time they read One Day (and let’s be honest, there are some of us who have read it over and over and over). In Miss You, Gus and Tess meet briefly as teenagers, and readers watch their lives continue across decades and continents before they find each other again.  –KV

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli – April 11, 2017

Simon Vs. The Homo-Sapiens Agenda is 200% one of my favourite YA books ever. Like, ever, ever. I didn’t think it’d be possible to love a character as much Simon, but Becky Albertalli is actual magic and has created another unforgettable protagonist in Molly. Read The Upside of Unrequited. It’s funny and heart-warming and feels so real. You will love every second of it. –SS

Fireworks by Katie Cotugno – April 11, 2017

New from the author of How To Love and 99 Days!!!! Fireworks is all about boy bands, girl bands, best friends and first love. If you’re a fan of Stephanie Perkins, Sarah Dessen, and Morgan Matson you should to read this book. If you’re a fan of the Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls and/or NSYNC you should to read this book. Basically, everyone should read this book. –SS

Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy – May 9, 2017

Oh, hey, it’s a new book by Julie Murphy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! –SS

Party Girls Die in Pearls by Plum Sykes – May 9, 2017

This super-charming, super-fun mystery is set at Oxford in the 80’s and follows two students, Ursula Flowerbutton and Nancy Feingold, as they try to solve the murder of one of their super-wealthy, super-popular classmates. I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK. It’s a blend of Sophie Kinsella’s books and Pretty Little Liars, with a dash of Veronica Mars. –SS

Dividing Eden by Joelle Charbonneau – June 6, 2017

Are you a fan of Red Queen?? And Game of Thrones?? Did you read Three Dark Crowns and think, Oh. Thats dark and also cool and also I love this book?? Well, let me introduce you to Dividing Eden, a new fantasy about two royal siblings who are forced to compete for the crown. ALSO. Lets all just take a moment to flail over that cover.

Hunger by Roxane Gay – June 13, 2017

Journalist, professor and New York Times bestselling author Roxane Gay is back with Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body. I started following Roxane’s writing after reading Bad Feminist, her accessible introduction to intersectional feminism. Though I haven’t had a chance to read Hunger in its entirety, I’ve read a few excerpts and can’t wait to read more of this honest memoir about self-image and self-care. –KV

Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiny – July 18th, 2017

The women in Katherine Heiny’s debut short story collection Single, Carefree, Mellow were neither single, nor carefree, nor mellow.  They were, however, funny, flawed, and felt so familiar. Reading that collection, I was so impressed with Katherine Heiny’s ability to write honest characters in relatable circumstances. Her debut novel, Standard Deviation, is no exception. I cannot recommend this book enough. –KV
