A huge thank you to Raincoast Books for the very exciting package that arrived in my mailbox. I am looking forward to Legendary and Furyborn and cannot wait to dive into them. I basically hugged the package when it was handed to me because I knew what I would find in it!

Winterspell by Claire Legrand

Winterspell by Claire Legrand
Release Date - September 30, 2014
Publisher Website - Simon and Schuster
Publisher Social Media - Twitter
Pages - 464 pages
My Rating - 3/5
**received in exchange for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
The clock chimes midnight, a curse breaks, and a girl meets a prince . . . but what follows is not all sweetness and sugarplums.

New York City, 1899. Clara Stole, the mayor's ever-proper daughter, leads a double life. Since her mother's murder, she has secretly trained in self-defense with the mysterious Drosselmeyer.

Then, on Christmas Eve, disaster strikes.

Her home is destroyed, her father abducted--by beings distinctly not human. To find him, Clara journeys to the war-ravaged land of Cane. Her only companion is the dethroned prince Nicholas, bound by a wicked curse. If they're to survive, Clara has no choice but to trust him, but his haunted eyes burn with secrets--and a need she can't define. With the dangerous, seductive faery queen Anise hunting them, Clara soon realizes she won't leave Cane unscathed--if she leaves at all.

Inspired by The Nutcracker, Winterspell is a dark, timeless fairy tale about love and war, longing and loneliness, and a girl who must learn to live without fear.
This is certainly not the Nutcracker you'll remember from your childhood. Claire Legrand is offering up a dark, sexy, twisty take on the classic tale. One that is filled with just as much wonder, whimsy and magic as the original, but also embraces it's own voice to become something entirely new and fresh.

Fans of the iconic story will delight in the nods woven throughout the story. Character names, scenes, and objects all pay homage to the ballet from which this draws inspiration, sometimes in surprising ways. I anticipate that you'll get more enjoyment out of it as a fan of the Nutcracker, and do recommend pairing a watching of the ballet with reading this novel so that it's fresh in your mind.

This is a sensual, decadent take on the Nutcracker tale. Those darker undertones are present in the source material, but they are pushed to the forefront in this retelling. The sensuous, lush writing style only adds to the steamy tone that is woven throughout many scenes in the novel. Clara, herself, is having an awakening of sorts. She timid and shy about sex. Her experiences have not been positive as she lives in fear of drawing attention to herself. This awakening is paralleled in the magic that is infused in every single aspect of Cane. It's intoxicating, and alluring and all part of Clara's journey. They are meshed together in a very organic way that worked well rather in the story.

I've heard much talk in reviews of the fact that Clara is attracted to Nicholas when he's in his 'nutcracker' form. For me, this aspect, while highly unusual, worked well within the story. It paid homage to the curse from the original while incorporating it into this sexier, and more dangerous adaptation. The connection, built from her younger years, makes their subsequent interactions feel more authentic. While Clara was sharing her secrets with Nicholas, she was also keeping him from going insane. There is plenty of chemistry between her and Nicholas and that stems from this bond that was formed without either of them really knowing it was being built.

Clara also has some real sparks with Anise. Their storyline is rather intriguing, but spoiler filled so I won't say much. I will say that it goes in directions that I was not expecting and completed Clara's journey.

The world building, while adeptly done in some cases, was not descriptive enough for me in others. I had a hard time picturing the world of Cane. Clara's New York and it's gritty, dirty underbelly was an easy setting to bring to life. However, Cane was much more difficult to imagine. In particular the mechanical creatures that have overtaken Cane. Also illusive to picture was the constant tearing down and rebuilding of the land that Anise was doing. I could not picture how that would work, or what it would look like. It made picturing these fully formed characters harder because their surrounding canvas felt like a mystery.

All the characters have themes of betrayal, forgiveness, prejudices, and survival strewn throughout their journeys. The political struggles between the various groups (humans, mages, and fairies) was well constructed and believable. It's this aspect of the story that shone the brightest because it felt timeless. Anise wasn't a one dimensional villain. Her treatment and was pushed her to the Anise we see in this story was horrendous. The novel stops short of excusing her actions though, and instead presents the characters has having choices. Choices are what define us, and how we treat others.

The pacing, well off at times, was mostly kept in place due to a ticking clock that constantly ensured the characters did not hesitate in their actions. The readers are constantly aware that something is coming and it added a nice bit of tension to the storyline. A tension that would have been missing if not for this element.

Claire Legrand has written a grown up fairytale for those who enjoy stories filled with fairies, kissing, snow, and magic. While I didn't fall as in love with Legrand's Cane as I wanted to, there is still more than enough to love within these enchanting pages.

There was plenty of squealing at my mailbox this week. Two books that I've been anticipating made their way to me this week. One is a retelling of a classic tale, and the other is the second novel in a sexy, scandal filled series.

Diamonds In The Rough by Michelle Madow (goodreads)
Winterspell by Claire Legrand (goodreads)

A huge thank you to Harlequin Teen and Simon and Schuster USA for these two books.

I also was approved for an e-galley of an amazing collection of short stories. All these amazing authors, and edited by Stephanie Perkins?! Obviously, I needed it! I am really excited to read it, and I hope to get to it as soon as the weather gets a little cooler. It feels like a book to enjoy with some hot chocolate.

My True Love Gave To My By Various (goodreads)

A big thank you to St Martin's Griffin, and Netgalley for the chance to review this.

Very quiet mailbox this week (which is awesome with BEA just around the corner) so there's only one book to share this week.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week. Short and sweet this week!

BOOKS

Cover of Winterspell by Claire Legrand

Delicate Monsters by Stephanie Kuehn

This 2015 release was announced recently in Publishers Weekly and the blurb sounds like it's EXACTLY the kind of book I would like
Delicate Monsters is a psychological thriller about a teenage sociopath returning to her hometown, and the brothers whose lives are forever changed by her reappearance.
It's up on Goodreads if you want to add it (so you don't forget about it) but I am really excited to learn more about this one.

OTHER

Book Expo America

As things start to be announced, I get more and more excited for May. A few authors, and books I am really excited about are going to be there. I am waiting impatiently for an official schedule (it won't be out to late April/early May) so that I can begin to plan. You can pretty much expect to see this on here a lot between now and May.

So what are you obsessed with this week?

2014 Most Anticipated - Winterspell

The next pick on my 2014 Most Anticipated list is one that immediately grabbed me by it's synopsis. Claire Legrand's Winterspell is going to offer a twisty retelling of The Nutcracker and I can't wait. Helping with the anticipation is that there is no cover yet! Counting down the days until we have one (I expect awesomeness)

Just check out this Goodreads synopsis and tell me you don't want it NOW

AMAZING RIGHT?! I want to read this IMMEDIATELY. If you, like me, can't wait to get your hands on this check out the awesome Q and A with Claire below. She even provided some musical inspiration.

1 Describe Winterspell in three words.

Nutcracker gets twisted.

2 What about the Nutcracker inspired you to write this story?

I've always loved the ballet, ever since I was a little girl -- loved, loved, LOVED to the point of obsession. My favorite production is by the Pacific Northwest Ballet, which was made into a motion picture in the 80s. It's strange and darkly whimsical, much like the original fairy tale, and much more interesting to me than most productions, which are far too sweet and harmless for my liking. But even my favorite production left me with unanswered questions about these characters, the worlds they inhabit, their motivations, their histories. By writing Winterspell I was able to expand upon this world I love so much, as well as bring these characters to life in a way that made sense to me and satisfied my lingering questions.

3 Are you able to share a secret about one of the characters, the world, something that inspired something about the world/characters?

I can do all three! Briefly, though. Don't want to give too much away yet. ;)

A secret about a character: In the ballet, the character of the Sugar Plum Fairy always seemed unnecessary to me, besides giving one of the principal ballerinas something to do. My frustration with her inspired the creation of a particularly dangerous, glamorous character in Winterspell. Rest assured, she has a lot to do in this book, and she does it bloodily -- while looking damn good (and she'll be the first to tell you that).

A secret about the world: There are two worlds in Winterspell -- one is 1899 New York City, and one is the land of Cane. I have written several fairy tales about the origin, history, inhabitants, and creatures of Cane, and I'll be sharing them with you next year, before the book's release!

Something that inspired me while writing: Listening to music helps me create -- characters, worlds, plot. One of my biggest inspirations for the general aesthetic of Cane was Paul Haslinger's score for Underworld, the first movie in the cheesy-but-undeniably-awesome series of vampire-vs-werewolves films. You can listen to one of the tracks below. I used this music a LOT when writing fight scenes, descriptive paragraphs, and big set pieces.

4 For fans of the Nutcracker, can they expect to see some of the iconic elements, or is it more a loosely based interpretation?

Fans of The Nutcracker will absolutely see nods to the ballet in Winterspell! Sometimes the references are blatant, and sometimes they're more subtle, but all of them should please those familiar with the ballet. As a fan myself, I certainly had a lot of fun writing them! But never fear -- those less familiar with the ballet won't feel left out in the slightest.

5 What 2014 release are you most looking forward to?

Without a doubt, Laini Taylor's Dreams of Gods and Monsters. I'm OBSESSED with that series, and with Taylor's writing in general. This is probably my favorite YA series of all time, and I just know the finale will blow me away . . . and probably also leave my heart in pieces, but that's just how I like it. ;)

A huge thank you to Claire for taking the time to answer these questions. This title is high up on my MUST read list, and the Q and A certainly increased my desire to get my hands on this one! Love the musical inspiration.

If you want to learn more, check out the author's website, or the publisher's website for more information.

Winterspell will be in stores September 2, 2014. Pre-orders for this title are not available yet, but be sure to add it to your Goodreads so that you'll remember to pre-order when it becomes available.

Let me know in the comments what you think of the cover, the synopsis, or what twists you expect this story to take! Are you a fan of the ballet? Also, check back soon for a contest where you could win one of my featured titles (be sure to pay attention to these Question and Answers as they'll help).

Obsessions for the week...

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

Cover of Black City by Elizabeth Richards

This cover is stunning. I love it. It's so eye catching, and the colour scheme works really well. The synopsis also amazing. One of my top "Pine For" books of the fall. This has been all over bookish blogs the last little while and if you haven't already make sure to check out the Goodreads information.

cover of Reached by Ally Condie

I like this cover the best out of the three in this series. I love the red dress, and the girl fully breaking out of the bubble she was in. I also love that each cover was the colour of one of the capsules in the story.

Winterspell by Claire Legrand

This doesn't come out until 2014, but AHHHHHHHHHHH! I am pining so bad for this one. It sounds AMAZING. It's based on the Nutcracker and I love the Nutcracker story. Find out more on Goodreads.

OTHER

Book Expo America

Chris Colfer is the Master of Ceremonies for the Children's Author Breakfast! John Green is a speaker! Guess who freaked out?! Guess who has tickets?! I am super psyched to go. Chris is my favourite part of Glee. Seriously, I love Kurt. I may embarrass myself. Hopefully the awesome Kelly who will be there can prevent this. SO FREAKING EXCITED! All the exclamation points in the world are not enough.
