Here is the Goodreads synopsis
The story of a young woman whose diabolical smarts are her ticket into a charmed life. But how many times can someone reinvent themselves? You be the judge.

Jule is a fighter, a social chameleon, and an athlete.
An intense friendship. A disappearance. A murder, or maybe two.
A bad romance, or maybe three.
Blunt objects, disguises, blood, and chocolate. The American dream, superheroes, spies, and villains.
A girl who refuses to give people what they want from her.
A girl who refuses to be the person she once was.
Genuine Fraud is a fun, rapid paced read. It is also a gender swapped novel version of a movie whose title I cannot reveal because it is too spoilerly. The major plot points of Genuine Fraud would be instantly ruined if you knew which movie it resembles, and that is part of why this novel didn't work as well as I wanted it to.

There is the potential in this story for a discussion about gender swapping, and how that would change the story being told. A discussion about girls and how they interact with each other. This author is known for the feminist slant she often puts on her writing, and I felt this element could have shone a little more. It could have distanced itself from its inspiration and should have been the way this author's mark was left on this story. I felt like E Lockhart's spin was missing from this story and that is what I so desperately wanted to read.

The sharp writing I have come to expect from E Lockhart is definitely present. Her writing is always pitch perfect and is what makes this novel such a joy to read. The clever story narration device of telling the events in reverse also allows for the story to unravel in a way that feels fresh enough, even when it invokes its obvious inspiration. The tone is perfect for this type of novel, and switches perfectly as the twists are revealed. It grows darker as the story progressions and the tension starts to creep in.

The characters of Imogen and Jule are both so fascinating. I wish more time would have been spent on characterization. This novel, because of what it is, is very plot driven. The pacing of the plot, and the way it unravels almost doesn't allow us to get to know the characters, especially one of them in particular, but I think it would have resonated more if there was more of an investment in the characters. These female characters are (among other things) complex, messy, and unapologetic in their actions. I wanted to get inside their heads a little more because these are the characters I want to see more of. I wanted this book to say something about these character types in this genre of story and I felt that opportunity was missed.

I think readers who are unfamilar with the movie this book so clearly pays homage to will end up enjoying this one much more than those who are familiar. The plot is gripping, the pacing wonderful, and the revealations shocking. It is everything it needs it to be for the story and writing style to work. Where it faulters is in the lack of surprise. The plot depends on that surprise and it is lost the minute you reconginize this story.

A book that had so much potential and just didn't quite deliver as fully as I wanted it to. It is an engaging and tension filled story, however it feels like one that should have had something more to say. There wasn't anything new that was dissected or revealed in this story, and this missed potential is perhaps what remains with me the most after turning the final page.

Waiting On Wednesday .... Genuine Fraud

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
From the author of the unforgettable New York Times bestseller We Were Liars comes a masterful new psychological suspense novel—the story of a young woman whose diabolical smarts are her ticket into a charmed life. But how many times can someone reinvent themselves? You be the judge.

Imogen is a runaway heiress, an orphan, a cook, and a cheat.
I loved We Were Liars. Loved. I have been dying for another E Lockhart novel ever since I finished it and was thrilled to discover she has one coming out this year.

This novel has a very sparse synopsis (much like We Were Liars) but that only makes me want to read it all the more. I think this is going to be incredible.

I am sad I have to wait so long for it to be released as this doesn't come out until September but it is something I am very excited about!

Expected release date - September 5, 2017

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Lots of exciting things in this week's post. I am excited for a new year and new things to get excited about.

BOOK

Cover for E. Lockhart's Genuine Fraud (goodreads)

The new book from E. Lockhart was just announced and with it the cover was revealed. I love both the cover and the brief synopsis that was given for this book.

If you haven't read We Were Liars do so immediately and add Genuine Fraud to your 2017 reading list.

When We Set The Dark On Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia (goodreads)

This novel immediately caught my attention in its deal announcement. It sounds amazing and I cannot wait to read it
set at the Medio School for Girls, where young women are trained to become one of two wives assigned to high society men. With revolution brewing in the streets, star student Dani Vargas fights to protect a destructive secret, sending her into the arms of the most dangerous person possible – the second wife of her husband-to-be.
It is going to be a bit of a wait since this comes out in 2019 but I have a feeling it is going to be totally worth it.

OTHER

Entertainment Weekly's First Look At Feud

I love everything about this cover. Ryan Murphy's newest show is going to be amazing and the talent is certainly there to ensure it is also well acted.

Canada is always a week behind on Entertainment Weekly issues so I am excited to pick up a copy of this as soon as it is available in stores.

Best Of 2014.... So Far

The halfway point of 2014 is quickly approaching and with it many best of (so far at least) lists. Since I typically do one, I figured now was as good a time as any.

Here are the ten books that I would consider my best of 2014...so far. These are in no particular order and are not ranked in any way.

We Were Liars by E Lockheart

The less said about this one the better. Just read it. Become a liar. You'll thank me after you've recovered.

Brazen by Katherine Longshore

Fans of Reign are being told to pick this one up. I completely agree. It's got scandalous Tudor drama, some rather adorable flirting, and some of my favourite friendships portrayed in a novel. Katherine also happens to be a fantastic writer, so the overall book is amazing.

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

Taking a beloved character and putting a deliciously sinful twist on her? Perfection. Danielle Paige's precision style writing, and attention to detail made this an intricate read. It left me dying for book two, and pretty sure I would never look at Dorothy the same way again.

Half Bad by Sally Green

A beautifully written book that puts a twist on the whole nature vs nurture question. A boy witch who has been ostracized his whole life for being 'half bad' offers heartbreaking moments, and a fascinating look at society in general.

Love Letters To The Dead by Ava Dellaria

This will leave you weepy, and may inspire you to write your own love letter to the dead. An impact debut novel that uses a letter style format to tell it's heartbreaking yet hopeful story. I easily got swept away.

Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson

A fun novel that has depth and layers. This one is perfect for the summer, and will leave you wanting to touch base with your own best friend...and maybe write them a list or two.

The Winner's Cure by Marie Rutkoski

Beautifully written, and some amazing world building mixed with incredible characters made Marie's novel a fantastic start to a new series. It's sneaks up on you and leaves you breathless as you feel it's full impact. Book two now, please!

Famous In Love by Rebecca Serle

Fun! Fun! Fun! If Hollywood love triangles, CW television shows, and novels that explore more than just the romance are your thing, YOU NEED TO PICK UP THIS BOOK. The characters, the setting, and the romance all won me over. My review will come closer to the date, but Rebecca had me hooked from the first paragraph. I basically need book two immediately.

Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrois

Intricate world building, a driven and determined female lead character, and some scorchingly sexy scenes made this a favourite. The interweaving of the all too real issue of the slave trade made this one resonate a little deeper. Full review to come soon (along with some other fun things) but this one easily charmed me.

The Blonde by Anna Godbersen

Marilyn Monroe as a spy is the premise for this tightly woven novel. Surprisingly this works much better than perhaps thought at first glance, and the author makes it seem entirely all to plausible. The romance between Marilyn and John F Kennedy provided a romantic backdrop that raised the stakes. A fantastic beach thriller for this summer!

Each of these links to my review (where available) if you wish to check it out.

What books made your list? Did you read any that are on mine? If so, what did you think?

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week.

BOOK

Cover of Dangerous Boys by Abigail Haas (goodreads)

Dangerous Girls is a dark and twisty read. It sucker punches you and totally messes with your head. As soon as I heard Abigail Haas was writing a companion novel, Dangerous Boys, I knew I would want to read it. I am curious to see what twists she has in store and I've been hearing good things already.

The cover was released, and I pretty much love it. I am unsure if this will be the North American cover, but I kind of hope it is.

*side note - can Dangerous Girls become a movie?! Please? It would be amazing.

Anne and Henry by Dawn Ius (goodreads)

It's no secret that I am a big fan of Tudor history. I was immediately intrigued when I saw this in Publishers Weekly recently
A contemporary retelling of the romance between King Henry the VIII and Anne Boleyn, in which Henry is a wealthy, popular teen destined for political greatness, and Anne is the manic pixie dream girl who ensnares him and threatens to destroy the life he's worked so hard to build.
A contemporary twist on the story of Anne Boleyn and Henry. I am cautiously intrigued because this synopsis. Not thrilled about the whole 'manic pixie dream girl' thing, or the 'ensnares and threatens to destroy his life' bits, but I hope it's a misleading synopsis. I see that Henry might feel this way, so perhaps it's from his point of view. Either way I am intrigued enough to check it out.

TV/MOVIE

Movie options Love Letters To The Dead, and We Were Liars

With the success of The Fault In Our Stars it seems more of the contemporary novels are going to be destined to hit the big screen. Two of my recent favourites have recently been optioned. We Were Liars already has a screenplay in place. It was written by E. Lockhart (as per Deadline). I believe that I heard Ava Dellaira is writing the screenplay for her novel as well. I approve of this trend of author's adapting their own novels. I feel it helps keep the tone of the work intact, and the author knows this material better than anyone.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
Release Date - May 13, 2014
Publisher Website - Random House Canada
Publisher Social Media - Twitter
Pages - 240 pages
My Rating - 5/5
**received in exchange for an honest review from the publisher**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.
There are some books that are simply too hard to review. This can be for many different reasons. Some are because you don't want to ruin the plot. Some are because you could never due justice to the incredible writing, and some are simply because your love can't be formed into the right words. We Were Liars is almost impossible to review because of all of this.

Part of what this novel does so well is to make the reader feel like they are part of this world. The make the reader feel like they are in on a secret. You feel like you're part of this family, dysfunction and all. It makes you feel like you're part of this friendship, including every secret and lie. Lastly, they let you be part of this forbidden romance, stolen moments included. It's mesmerizing and completely engrossing.

I've never read a novel by E. Lockhart before this one. Her writing style was poetically beautiful. It's magnetic in that it pulls you in, lushly descriptive, and stunning. I think the writing is the element that most stands out for me. She brings the setting, characters, and plot to life easily, and with such captivating prose.

Unreliable narrators are some of my favourites, and Cady is no exception. Her murky, dreamlike narration compliments the sleepy summer days on the island setting. It also kept me guessing. Obviously when a narrator is unreliable (for any reason) we should expect some surprises, and as the synopsis indicates, secrets. I think the pacing and reveal was perfectly executed, and left me ugly crying on the bus.

This review is shorter than I would like for a novel that completely stunned me, slayed me, and broke me. Yet,  I don't want to say anymore. Do yourself a favour and don't spoil We Were Liars before you experience it for yourself. This books is one of those that you don't just read, you truly do experience it, and this aspect is what makes unraveling it's secrets truly memorable. Allow yourself to experience the novel as it's meant to unfold, and be swept away into the story of the Liars.

As soon as I closed the book I immediately wanted to open it again and read it all over again, but this time as someone in on the secret. This time as a Liar. You'll finish this feeling connected to the characters, and this group of people. I do, however, recommend perhaps getting two copies; one for you and a friend though. Trust me when I say you'll be dying to talk to someone about it when you're done.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

A smaller obsessions post this week! Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

My flailing about this one is because of Jamie at The Broke and the Bookish. She has made me NEED to read this one. Katie at Bookishly Yours brought it to my attention and after reading Jamie's Goodreads review I am obsessed. Have I mentioned that 2014 is going to be the year of awesome books? Because it totally is.

MOVIE/TV

Catching Fire

I was late to the party but I FINALLY got to see Catching Fire. AMAZING, right? I totally adore Finnick. Sam Claflin impressed me. I was nervous about how Finnick would be portrayed, but he did a fantastic job. Jennifer Lawrence is, as always, perfection. Josh Hutcherson is perfect as Peeta. I don't know how you couldn't be a little in love with Peeta after this movie. The message and tone of the book came through perfectly. Some of the marketing of the movie hurts my heart, because it totally goes against the message of the entire series, but the movie showed exactly what made me fall in love with this series. Oh, and I would totally tell Finnick all my secrets.

Reign

Still totally loving this show. It's surprised me, and I am fully hooked. Doesn't hurt that Francis is pretty swoon worthy (most of the time). A strong Queen, a dashing Prince, and some fun twists make this deliciously fun TV! Check it out if you're not already hooked.

OTHER

Lindor Chocolate Calendar

Tomorrow is December 1st! That means I get to start my countdown to Christmas with my yearly chocolate calendar. Every year I get one, and Lindor is my FAVOURITE chocolate so this calendar is basically perfect for me.

So what are you obsessed with this week?
