**SPOILERS FOR PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THE SERIES**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
The hotly anticipated third book in the bestselling Bone Season series – a ground-breaking, dystopian fantasy of extraordinary imagination

Following a bloody battle against foes on every side, Paige Mahoney has risen to the dangerous position of Underqueen, ruling over London's criminal population.

But, having turned her back on Jaxon Hall and with vengeful enemies still at large, the task of stabilising the fractured underworld has never seemed so challenging.

Little does Paige know that her reign may be cut short by the introduction of Senshield, a deadly technology that spells doom for the clairvoyant community and the world as they know it…
When the release date for The Song Rising was announced I know plenty of fans bemoaned the wait for the next chapter in Paige's story. It was agonizing, but Samantha Shannon has delivered a novel that was not only worth the wait, but surpassed any and all expectations that I had.

Each new novel in this series leads Paige to some place unexpected. These novels do not feel predictable, and often pace events much quicker than I would have guessed for a longer series. Plot points are not dragged out and that leaves the novel feeling tightly plotted. This novel, especially, showcases why this series is going to be a larger one with pushing everyone, including the reader, outside the comfort zones we've come to love. I delight in the fact that I cannot predict what will happen in this series. It allows me to experience the magic of Paige's journey as she does, and makes the emotions I feel while reading resonate all the more.

Paige is such a wonderful character. She's nuanced, and complex. I feel like after three novels we really know who she is and why she makes the choices she does. The introduction of her becoming Underqueen and walking away Jaxon sets the stage for her to continue to grow. She's quickly becoming one of my favourite female protagonists. I admire her determination, loyalty and the fact that she sometimes makes the wrong decisions (even if she is making them for the right reasons). She is a force and I cannot wait to see how she progresses in the future novels.

It is easy to get attached to all these characters, particularly the other members of the Seven Seals, as the story progresses. How attached I have grown to all these characters really sneaked up on my during this novel. That emotional attachment has been firmly cemented because Samantha has taken her time and allowed these characters to earn their spot in our heats.

I cannot discuss the major plot points without giving away too many spoilers, but this novel is a thrill ride from start to finish. It grabs your entire attention from the beginning and doesn't let up until the final page. The entire novel is well plotted with things being revealed at just the right time. The set up of the early chapters is well worth the pay off towards the end. This feels like the book that major shifts Paige's story and opens our view to a much larger, and more complex world.

The ending packs an emotional punch as we shit Paige's story once again. This novel opens up so many exciting possibilities and ensures that waiting for the forth is going to be exquisite torture. The ending was bittersweet for me, as I anticipate it will be for a lot of readers, filled with both tears and excitement. This kind of hook is something Samantha does incredibly well and has ensured I will be a life long fan.

An action packed series that only continues to impress with each passing installment. Paige's journey continues to surprise and delight as her world widens, and the connections deepen. This Song Rising will please fans of the series immensely and have you itching to get your hands on the forth installment of this breathtaking series.

The Song Rising Prologue Reveal

I have loved each installment of Samantha Shannon's The Bone Season series and am eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Paige's story.

This series is so vibrant, and imaginative. It is enthralling and filled with stunning world building. I am thrilled to be an advocate for the series, and even more thrilled to get to share the prologue to The Song Rising, the third book in the series, with you today.

Obviously, there are potential spoilers for the previous two books in the below prologue so read at your own risk (and if you haven't read The Bone Season, and The Mime Order DO SO IMMEDIATELY)

Below are my spoiler filled thoughts about the prologue, so only continue if you've read the above.

My immediate reaction to receiving the prologue was intense excitement! I couldn't wait to read it. I am desperate for anything from the next book so I even read it on my phone on the bus ride home from work.

There was some serious fangirling happening when I began to read it. I was so happy to be back in Paige's world (even if it was just a little taste of what is to come).

Those feelings, naturally, progressed to shock when I realized what was going on. Things are already intense and this is only the prologue (although I shouldn't be surprised after the ending of The Mime Order).

my actual expression while reading

That shock quickly turned into some serious anger towards a certain former mime lord of The Seven Seals.

not amused

Seriously. REALLY, Jaxon, REALLY?! *rage* How dare you hurt Warden. How dare you!! Now that Paige figures Jaxon was the traitor I am going to need that backstory filled in because this potentially means Jaxon has plenty more surprises up his sleeve.

Once I had finished reading the prologue my feelings turned into deep sadness because I now have to wait until March 7, 2017 for the rest of the book to come out.

It really isn't fair

The prologue has definitely made me even more excited to continue this series! Be sure to add The Song Rising to your Goodreads account and check out the previous books in the series if you have not already.

You can pre-order The Song Rising at all book retailers now, or by using the links below.

Let me know what you thought of the prologue in the comments or tell me your favourite character from the series! Super excited to hear what everyone thinks!

The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon

I am honoured to be taking part in the official blog tour for Samantha Shannon's THE MIME ORDER. As part of the tour, I am going to be reviewing the sequel to the best-selling first novel, THE BONE SEASON.

First, Bloomsbury decided to do something incredibly  fun for this tour. This novel features clairvoyants and auras. Each of the auras mean something different and it represents the type of clairvoyant. We got photos of ourselves modified to reflect our auras.

As you can see, I chose blue for my aura. A blue aura represents Augurs. They use organic matter, or elements, to connect with the æther.

Be sure to check out the other stops on the tour for other reviews and content.

Don't miss the giveaway that is after the review as well! *US ONLY*

Here is the Goodreads synopsis

Paige Mahoney has escaped the brutal prison camp of Sheol I, but her problems have only just begun: many of the survivors are missing and she is the most wanted person in London...

As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on the dreamwalker, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city's gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take centre stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner. Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided.
The Mime Order is a sequel that does exactly what it should - it improves on the first novel. This installment takes the story in unexpected directions, changes what you thought about it's world and characters after the first novel, and proves that there are still plenty of surprises left in Paige's story.

After the fully satisfying ending that The Bone Season offered, I was most curious as to where the story would go next. This installment offers a wider look at the world Samantha has created. A deeper, more complex look at the politics at play, and shows new sides to the characters we're beginning to care about. This expansion illuminates exactly why this is a multiple book series. It's richer, and more layered than it first appears. It creates many directions that the story could take, and the one it takes is rather surprising.

Betrayal, double crossing, secrets and lies are the currency of this novel. Everyone has an agenda and nobody plays fair. This allowed for some twists and turns during the novel. This can turn in an instant and loyalty is never guaranteed. The world of the syndicate creates a dangerous atmosphere and this novel highlights the severe consequences decisions can have.

The pacing of the story is pitch perfect. It's rapid speed will leave you mesmerized and  in awe. Things that I did not expect to happen until much later in the series come to fruition sooner than expected. It leave you with a sense of both apprehension and elation because of the unpredictability this offers. Novels that can surprise me leave a lasting impression and this one did just that.

Without giving anything away, the Rephaim are back. Getting to learn more about them, and what their agenda is was one of the most compelling aspects of the novel. This group has politics that rival those in the syndicate and how it all meshes together is rather complex. The set up is like a house of cards with each move impacting the whole. It creates a fragile balance that is easily tipped. This novel is that balance breaking and it's aftermath.

The slow burn of the romances in this book is exactly what this novel needs. It's background to it's actual plot. The romance is something that heightens the already existing drama and emotions. It is just another layer to the characters, and not who the characters are. It makes it feel realistic and allows you to be become invested in the outcome..

As fascinating as the setting is, it is the characters that truly shine. The human moments of grief, betrayal, self doubt, perseverance, and every other emotion in between are what leaves a last impression. My favourite moments were the ones seeped in character development. It's where Samantha truly shows her talent and growth. If the first book was laying the foundation of the world, this book lays the foundation for character development and shows what that means for the plot.

Samantha Shannon showcases that we are only beginning to see her talent as a writer, and storyteller. This sequel will surpass expectations, and leave you desperately counting down the days until the next installment of this smart, addictive, well plotted series is released.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
It is the year 2059. Several major world cities are under the control of a security force called Scion. Paige Mahoney works in the criminal underworld of Scion London, part of a secret cell known as the Seven Seals. The work she does is unusual: scouting for information by breaking into others’ minds. Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare kind of clairvoyant, and in this world, the voyants commit treason simply by breathing.

But when Paige is captured and arrested, she encounters a power more sinister even than Scion. The voyant prison is a separate city—Oxford, erased from the map two centuries ago and now controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. These creatures, the Rephaim, value the voyants highly—as soldiers in their army.

Paige is assigned to a Rephaite keeper, Warden, who will be in charge of her care and training. He is her master. Her natural enemy. But if she wants to regain her freedom, Paige will have to learn something of his mind and his own mysterious motives.

The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine—a young woman learning to harness her powers in a world where everything has been taken from her. It also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut.
Buzz is a tricky thing. It creates interest, and gets people talking. It can also leave people disenchanted, and the author with expectations that are almost impossible to fulfill. Luckily, Samantha Shannon's The Bone Season delivers on the hype.

The world that Paige Mahoney inhabits is brought to life by Samantha Shannon effortlessly. She's created a complex, layered world that is both grounded in reality and fantastical. Paige's time in Scion London is recognizable for the most part, and the re-imagined Oxford is brimming with creativity, and intrigue.

The politics in this novel are much more complex than you first think upon diving in. Once things begin unravel you see the careful work that went into creating something that would allow for plot advancement later on in what is to be a seven book series. The little details that are expanded upon give the world a rich, full realized feel that allows the reader to become lost within the pages. These two interconnected worlds - the one of mime crime, and the world of the Rephaite - are both so developed that I couldn't help but be in awe. It's a feeling reminiscent of a few fantasy novels, namely Harry Potter, in which the world is so encompassing that it becomes a character itself.

Paige stands up for what she believes it right. She doesn't back down when she believes it is important. She risks herself to protect others, and yet she would never consider herself a hero. She's flawed, and has her own skewed moral code. It's her inner strength that I loved most about her. She's resourceful, and capable, but isn't super woman. She's can't fix everything, and not everything comes easily to her. It was a refreshing to see a character like this.

Paige's life is controlled by others from the moment we meet her. She is constantly trading one form of prison for another. I can't wait for the strength and conviction that is glimpsed to fully take over, and for her to break free from both the Rephaim and the mime-lord who seek to own her. The spark is there, and the tease of the power she holds is electric. She could become a force to be reckoned with, if she gets out of her own way. She's hesitant, and reluctant to use her talents to fight back. It's this side of Paige that makes her relatable. It contrasts her criminal side. She has limits, and won't cross them. I loved the complexities of her character, and those surrounding her, and can't wait to see her grow and emerge as the series progresses.

The relationship between Warden and Paige had the potential to be problematic. A woman who is drawn to her captor is not something that normally sits well with me. It has the potential to appear abusive, and I was thrilled to be proven wrong. This relationship is unique because of Warden, and how unique he is. The Rephaim are ruthless, and strict. They are harsh and unforgiving. His treatment of Paige endeared him to me immediately, because he is everything the Raphaim are not. He's noble, honorable, and kind. Their relationship grows as the trust between them develops. Lust, and perhaps love, don't enter the picture until much later, when walls have come down, and confessions have been made. This slow build creates tension that when finally acted on is even steamier, and the connection feels earned.

Samantha Shannon is a debut author with much promise, and as a debut, The Bone Season left me stunned. The ending leaves me excited about where the story could lead. A world that is brimming with possibilities plot wise, and a carefully crafted political structure already in place, makes me think this is one series to keep an eye on.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

cover of Wild Cards by Simone Elkeles

My Friday Night Lights obsession has made this a must get for me. Totally psyched that it's going to be at Book Expo America! Loving the cover too.

TV

Emma and Baelfire (Once Upon A Time)

The first part of the Once Upon A Time finale killed me. So many amazing Emma and Baelfire scenes. So many feelings. It was pretty much everything I wanted and everything I didn't all at once. The second part airs this Sunday and I expect it to be just as excruciating with the wait for season three to be a killer. #SwanfireFeelings

MOVIE

character poster of Magnus from City of Bones

So Magnus is my favourite. I literally adore this character and fangirled over him when I met Cassandra Clare awhile back. He's the best. Godfrey Gao? PERFECT. Instrument of Chaos huh? Interesting.

OTHER

Bone Season Advocate

I've been selected as one of the advocates for Samantha Shannon's debut novel The Bone Season. I am not entirely sure what it entails, but I am super excited about this title. I will be getting my advocate package soon and can't wait to start sharing everything. It's a huge honour and am really looking forward to it.

Book Expo America

Alright, so Monday marks the 2 week mark until I leave for New York City. I excited for so much going on in the city. The Teen Author Carnival event is always one of my favourite. There are a bunch of other signings going on that week in the city. It feels like it's going to be one non-stop book filled week.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Tarnish by Katherine Longshore

I was extremely lucky to get an ARC of this. I immediately had to devour it. It's everything I hoped it would be and more. Anne Boleyn is such an iconic figure, and Katherine Longshore captures her the way I invision she was - intelligent, quick witted and progressive.

It also has a shiny new cover

While I miss Anne on the cover, this is one just so pretty. There is something about it's simple elegance that stands out. I hear that Gilt's paperback is also getting a new cover to match, so I can't wait to see it! Be sure to add it to your Goodreads shelf.

ARCs for The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

The people behind the Bloomsbury twitter tweeted the following picture

Causing me to freak out! This means it is that much closer to me actually reading this. Very excited. I love the simple look of the ARCs too, but do wish they had that awesome cover that was revealed recently. If you haven't checked out the synopsis yet, be sure to check out Goodreads.

The cover of The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

Not sure what exactly draws me to this cover. It's certainly eye catching, and I love faint vein like lines that can be seen around the title. I don't know a whole lot other than the Goodreads synopsis but it sounds awesome. Very much looking forward to getting my hands on a copy.

TV

Once Upon A Time

It's back!!! I get to watch a new episode this Sunday. I am really looking forward to the following Sunday's episode titled 'Manhattan' but am just glad to have it back. Hiatus are not fun, especially when you are eagerly awaiting some EPIC reveals. Sigh...hurry up next Sunday.
