Waiting On Wednesday.... Thornhill

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Thornhill by Kathleen Peacock

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Mac can’t lose another friend. Even if he doesn’t want to be found.

The ripple effect caused by Mac’s best friend Amy’s murder has driven Mac’s new love, Kyle, to leave Hemlock and disappear from her life forever. But Mac knows that Kyle plans to enroll in a rehabilitation camp, where he can live with other werewolves. She refuses to accept his decision, especially since the camps are rumored to be tortuous. So she sets out in search of Kyle with a barely sober Jason—and Amy’s all-seeing ghost—in tow.

Clues lead Mac to find Kyle in a werewolf den in Colorado—but their reunion is cut short by a Tracker raid. Now Mac and Kyle are trapped inside the electric fences of Thornhill, a camp for young werewolves. As she devises an escape plan, Mac uncovers dangerous secrets buried within the walls of Thornhill—and realizes that the risk to the people she loves is greater than ever before.
After the first book in this series, Hemlock, I was dying to get my hands on the second. The synopsis sounds amazing, and I am very much looking forward to more of Mac's story.

Expected release date - September 10, 2013

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

No books this week, but I did get quite a bit of bookish goodies.

Kathleen Peacock, Kristin Halbrook, and Katherine Longshore all sent me some fantastic swag. There is a giveaway going on for Nobody But Us by Kristin Halbrook including some swag, and Tudor Tuesdays will feature some giveaways as well.

Thank you to the authors who sent these goodies my way. It's always nice to get them, and I can't wait to share in giveaways.

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock

Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock
Release Date –  May 8, 2012
Publisher Website –  Harper Collins
Publisher Social Media - Twitter/Facebook/SavvyReader
Pages -  400 pages
My Rating- 4.5/5
**obtained from the publisher for an honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered.
Since then, Mac’s life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac’s hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy’s killer: A white werewolf.
Lupine syndrome—also known as the werewolf virus—is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control.
Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy’s murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy’s boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.
Kathleen Peacock’s thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filled with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love.
A town filled with people fearing werewolves, a girl fiercely determined to get to the bottom of her best friend’s murder, and new romances blossoming. Kathleen Peacock draws you in with her well plotted mystery and makes you fall for her characters in the process.

I enjoyed Mackenzie a lot. A typical girl who has gone through a lot. She’s just trying to pick herself up after her friend’s murder. A murder that is, quite literally, haunting her. She’s much stronger than she thinks she is, and constantly shows that strength. She’s not the strongest physically, and does get into a little trouble, but she is doing it for honourable reasons.

The two boys in Mackenzie’s life are Jason and Kyle. I loved both of these boys for different reasons.
Jason is spiralling after Amy’s death. He is angry, hostile and full of regret and guilt. Kyle is hurting in his own way and is dealing with his own guilt. Each boy is hiding something, and each secret gets Mac deeper into a world that caused Amy to get killed.

I loved the political aspects of the novel. The whole “pro” and “anti’ werewolf campaign and agendas kept the action and suspense taunt. It also made the werewolf part of the story much more realistic than it could have been. You have people who are so blinded they won’t listen to reason, and you have people who are not sure what side of the debate they fall on. The entire premise of werewolf rights is one of the most compelling parts of the novel.

Hemlock is a city filled with secrets, lies, manipulations and political and personal agendas. The complex and intricate murder mystery is developed slowly against a backdrop of political platforms. This adds an element to the story that keeps the mystery fresh and not easy to figure out. You are constantly second guessing motives, and hidden agendas. I did not guess who the killer was until just before Mac realizes it. The question of what happened to Amy is one that provides a dark and dangerous answer.

While the closure you expect does happen before the end of the novel, and the murderer is uncovered, the novel ends with Mac’s story just beginning. She is moving forward, while all too aware that the past could come back to bite her. It’s a thrilling starting point for the next instalment in this addictive series.

Hemlock is dangerous, beautifully heartbreaking and lushly romantic. It takes the classic werewolf tale and offers up a modern take on them.  You defiantly haven’t seen werewolves like this before.

She's told me some of her selections are not appropriate for younger audiences, so please use your discretion if you chose to look them up!

Obsessions...this week...

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOK

Cover of City of Lost Souls

So pretty! Seriously, it's so romantic, and the colour scheme is amazing. I am dying to read this book! I won't lie though...kinda wish Magnus Bane was on the cover. *fingers crossed for the next one*

Hemlock's love triangle

Ok, so if you follow Kathleen Peacock on twitter you may have seen her mention the love triangle in This Dark Endeavour by Kenneth Oppel. She mentioned how well done it is. I am reading This Dark Endeavour now and she is totally right. This has made me even more excited to read her debut novel Hemlock, because she obviously knows her love triangles (and her book has one according to the synopsis).

cover and synopsis for Masque of the Red Death

This was my Waiting on Wednesday pick but I love the synopsis so much and the cover is stunning I had to mention it again. If you haven't read the synopsis you really need to head over to Goodreads and do so. I can not wait for this book.

MOVIE

Tangled (Disney)

I might be the only person who hasn't seen this yet. I recently watched it with my three nieces and LOVED it. Such a cute movie. Mandy Moore is adorable as the voice of Rapunzel. I am going to go out and purchase it now because I loved it so much. You know it's bad when you are asking your nieces to watch it again! :)

OTHER

Fariytales

Between the awesomeness that is Cinder and Once Upon a Time fairytales are coming back in a big way. Retellings, reimagings, and the classics are all seeing a resurgence. I am thrilled, and can't wait to see what the rest of the books in Marissa Meyer's series has in store for us.

A murder mystery, werewolves, and what sounds like some swoon worthy guys. I can't wait to read this one. Plus, the cover is so pretty!

My Obsessions for the week!

The awesome Kelly at KellyVison started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

So this week my obsessions are:

BOOKS

Stolen by Lucy Christopher

Ok, so this could be either under books/movies.

The author tweeted that Stolen was one step closer to being made into a movie. I did a happy dance. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book (if you haven't read it, do so immediately) and would love to see it on the big screen. I would want them to cast Ryan Kwanten as Ty.

MOVIES

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trailer

There are a few different trailers out. This one is by far my favourite. I am very optimistic about this movie based on this trailer. Rooney Mara seems to have nailed the part of Lisbeth. I am curious to see if they will "soften" Lisbeth for the Hollywood version. I want them to keep her the way she is in the books, it's what makes her so great.

Brandon Lee's last interview

Kathleen Peacock (author of the upcoming Hemlock) had mentioned watching Brandon Lee's last interview on Twitter. I had been obsessed with The Crow when it came out, and Brandon's sad fate has always pulled at my heart. This interview always gets me crying, but apparently I like to cry as I have watched it so many times since Kathleen reminded me of it. I am including it under movies, but it might be more "other".

OTHER

Lindt Advent Calendar

It's December and that means the countdown to Christmas has begun! Every year I have a countdown calendar, and this year mine is from Lindt. It's HUGE. I am already enjoying my daily chocolate surprise.

What are you obsessed with this week?
