Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Somewhere in the Badlands, embedded deep in centuries-buried rock and sand, lies the skeleton of a massive dinosaur, larger than anything the late nineteenth-century world has ever seen. Some legends call it the Black Beauty, with its bones as black as ebony, but to seventeen-year-old Samuel Bolt, it’s the “rex,” the king dinosaur that could put him and his struggling, temperamental archaeologist father in the history books (and conveniently make his father forget he’s been kicked out of school), if they can just quarry it out.

But Samuel and his father aren’t the only ones after the rex. For Rachel Cartland this find could be her ticket to a different life, one where her loves of science and adventure aren’t just relegated to books and sitting rooms. And if she can’t prove herself on this expedition with her professor father, the only adventures she may have to look forward to are marriage or spinsterhood.

As their paths cross and the rivalry between their fathers becomes more intense, Samuel and Rachel are pushed closer together. Their flourishing romance is one that will never be allowed. And with both eyeing the same prize, it’s a romance that seems destined for failure. As their attraction deepens, danger looms on the other side of the hills, causing everyone’s secrets to come to light and forcing Samuel and Rachel to make a decision. Can they join forces to find their quarry, and with it a new life together, or will old enmities and prejudices keep them from both the rex and each other?
Much of Every Hidden Thing feels unique. Its unique plot, romance, and writing style add up to a wonderfully crafted book about hunting dinosaurs, romance, and finding your own path in the world of your parents.

This novel offers up two points of view. We get both Rachel's narration as well as Samuel's story. Instead of switching chapters, the narration often switches within the same chapter. The narrator is distinguished by font type and very clear voice. It  was a little jarring at first, but once you get use to the style, it becomes effortless to read. Each of the characters is so strongly crafted that you get a sense of them rather easily so this narration seems natural.

Rachel shines the brightest in this book. She's focused, intelligent, driven, and unapologetic about her goals and ambition. She's exactly the type of character I want more of. She's not easily distracted from her goals, and is not willing to get them up for anything. She was interested in science in a time where many women were not favourably looked at for doing so.

The romance within these pages was also unique. There isn't an instant love connection. There is perhaps an insta-lust situation on Rachel's part, but I found Samuel's fascination with Rachel to be more real. She's not initially his type, and Rachel finds him too much of a pretty boy for her liking, but the intrigue they both feel is enough to compel them to get to know each other. The romance isn't one built on the stuff of rom-com legend, but instead one of harsh realities, uncertainty, and leaps of faith. They learn together how to be in this relationship and that is the most realistic element of all. It's built over time, and is more than just a physical attraction, even though that is part of it eventually. It feels earned, but also very real. They will have hard times, and sometimes be angry with each other, but you feel they care enough to work it out. It was refreshing because it felt so authentic and that really made me connect to this love story.

The star-crossed aspect of being the children of rival 'bone hunters' was intriguing. The fathers are used for comedic impact as well as adding an obstacle for the young lovers. Both fathers are loud, forceful personalities whose animosity perhaps stems from them being too similar. Their feud is made all the more tense as the reader is always aware of the ticking clock in the background and the streak of competition that runs through the desire to be first to discover something new.

The setting of the 'wild west' was well crafted as well. I could easily picture the archaeological sites, and the unrelenting dust and sun. The author easily puts you in the centre of the 'Bone Wars' and all that it entailed. From dangers, adventure, and turbulent interactions between the Native tribes of the land all lending an added tension to the story.

A novel for anyone who was obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid, and anyone who has wanted to participate in an archaeological dig. If you are looking for a little something different than the usual from the young adult market, this is exactly the book for you. Fans of Kenneth Oppel's other work will devour this latest offering, as will those with an interest in science. I predict, however, that even those without an interest in dinosaurs will find much to love within these pages.

**SPOILERS FOR THIS DARK ENDEAVOUR**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Devotion turns deadly in this second Gothic thriller from Kenneth Oppel. When does obsession become madness? Tragedy has forced sixteen-year-old Victor Frankenstein to swear off alchemy forever. He burns the Dark Library. He vows he will never dabble in the dark sciences again—just as he vows he will no longer covet Elizabeth, his brother’s betrothed.
If only these things were not so tempting.
When he and Elizabeth discover a portal into the spirit world, they cannot resist. Together with Victor’s twin, Konrad, and their friend Henry, the four venture into a place of infinite possibilities where power and passion reign. But as they search for the knowledge to raise the dead, they unknowingly unlock a darkness from which they may never return.
Where This Dark Endeavour focused on science and alchemy, Such Wicked Intent takes a darker, more supernatural turn. Kenneth Oppel, once again, captives and chills while making you love his characters for their flaws.

Kenneth Oppel’s writing makes you turn pages late into the night. It leaves you anxiously awaiting what is going to happen to these characters. His greatest accomplishment is making Victor a conflicted, egotistical and yet, incredibly engaging and enthralling character. Victor, for all his flaws, ranks as one of the more crush worthy boys in Young Adult fiction. It’s the writing and characterization that prevents the disconnection that could happen with such a character.

Each character is greatly changed from the previous novel. I enjoyed seeing Henry’s transformation most of all. Henry’s sweet nature often masks the reality - he is Victor’s friend. He does have things in common with Victor. His more confident side shows through in this novel, as the events of the previous novel have impacted him greatly.

The romance aspect of the novel is something I tend to not like in novels. I hesitate to call it a triangle because Elizabeth’s feelings are quite clear. She is focused on Konrad, even in death. There is something captivating about the romance that does sneak in between her and Victor, and even a little deliciously sexy. The spirit world heightens any passions and the chemistry between Elizabeth and Victor is electric. Upon viewing Elizabeth in the spirit world for the first time Victor thinks
there is absolutely nothing between my gaze and her face. It’s like I am stroking her skin. It feels almost wicked, deliciously so”. (arc page 66) .
This quote sums up how Victor views her perfectly. The relationship between Elizabeth and each brother is different. She’s different things to each brother. She’s both light and dark. Her character fascinates me because she’s so wholly complex and developed.

Victor’s motivations are thinly veiled under the guise of wanting to resurrect his brother. Part of his motivation does stem from this, but Victor’s thirst for power is what pushes him. He is a perfect example of power twisting someone and becoming their driving force. Victor is accused of thinking he is a god; this is not far off. What he, Elizabeth and Henry unleash is powerful, and addicting. Victor’s personality makes that pull even more dangerous. He becomes obsessed and pushes boundaries, even if those limits shouldn’t be pushed.

The ending leaves us with Victor that has had a taste of immense power. The dark and chilling path he is on leads to the events in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. A wonderfully detailed, twisted and compelling prequel that shines light on a descent into madness ignited by a lust for power.

Sears Christmas Wishbook

The excitement for Christmas when I was younger started when Sears (a department store here in Canada) published their annual Christmas catalog. The Sears Christmas Wishbook comes out around this time every year and I would rush to look through it for ideas to add to my Christmas list. A tradition that I have carried on with my nieces. I am excited to bring my freshly delivered copy to them so they can start creating their own lists. *Yes, I just said the dreaded "C" word (Christmas)*

Fall TV Season

With September being right around the corner I am starting to get antsy about my beloved TV shows coming back. The Vampire Diaries, Once Upon A Time, Dexter, and Revenge are some of the shows that I am looking forward to having back! After those season finales I am dying to see what happens next.

So what you are obsessed with this week?

Born Wicked Trailer

This trailer is awesome. It's made me want to read the book even more. What is it with witches and feathers though?!

This Dark Endeavour by Kenneth Oppel

I loved this novel. LOVED! It's full of action, angst, and a well done love triangle. I am dying to read Such Wicked Intent when it comes out this summer. If you missed it I have reviewed this one on the blog already.

Covers and synopsis for Between the Lines and Kill Me Softly

First up is Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer.

This not only has a pretty cover, but the  premise sounds amazing - hot guy from a book turns out to be a real teenage guy trapped in the book! Awesome right?! If you want to learn more, check out Goodreads for the details.

My fairytale obsession really is at an all time high right now. Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross could not have come at a better time! I am officially dying of want, and can't wait to read it. A young girl goes to find her parents graves only to find out she's Sleeping Beauty! The cover is stunning too! Again, Goodreads will give you more information if you wish.

OTHER

Book Expo America

You can pretty much expect me to have this on her quite a few times between now and the actual event. I purchased my pass and am all set to go! It feels much more "real" now that I have something purchased and confirmed.

Westjet Airlines

If you read my little "about me" blurb you know that I work as a travel agent. I recently won some tickets on Westjet Airlines to go anywhere they travel within North America. I am super excited as I have always wanted to go visit California. I have a friend who lives there, and there is quite a bit I want to see. Needless to say I am already planning it, even though it's not until the fall sometime.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Victor and Konrad are the twin brothers Frankenstein. They are nearly inseparable. Growing up, their lives are filled with imaginary adventures...until the day their adventures turn all too real.
They stumble upon The Dark Library, and secret books of alchemy and ancient remedies are discovered. Father forbids that they ever enter the room again, but this only peaks Victor's curiosity more. When Konrad falls gravely ill, Victor is not be satisfied with the various doctors his parents have called in to help. He is drawn back to The Dark Library where he uncovers an ancient formula for the Elixir of Life. Elizabeth, Henry, and Victor immediately set out to find assistance in a man who was once known for his alchemical works to help create the formula.
Determination and the unthinkable outcome of losing his brother spur Victor on in the quest for the three ingredients that will save Konrads life. After scaling the highest trees in the Strumwald, diving into the deepest lake caves, and sacrificing one’s own body part, the three fearless friends risk their lives to save another
I read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein years ago. I enjoyed it and my interest was piqued when I heard there was going to be a prequel set when Victor Frankenstein was a teenager.

The references to Shelley’s Frankenstein are apparent and done so well. The story absolutely fits into her created world and is just as engaging in it’s own right. The writing is well paced, and this book is really well written. You’ll be sucked in immediately. The story is action packed. I was holding my breath in some parts, because they were that tense.

Twins Victor and Konrad are as different personality wise as they are similar look wise. Konrad is more level headed, a strong student, and a gifted athlete. Victor however is a complex, highly emotional young man. He is more mischievous than his brother, and more likely to get into trouble. I found both of them very likeable.

The relationship between Victor and Konrad is so wonderfully developed. The author manages to create a bond that seems very real. The feelings Victor has of being inadequate when comparing himself to Konrad are very common in sibling relationships and the love he felt at the same time equally common. He would do anything for Konrad, but still strives to be better than him.

The whole notion of power, and what happens when people have it is teased throughout the novel. Victor pushes, and tests the boundaries of alchemy. Flushed with minor success he constantly wants more, creating dangerous situations. It really foreshadows the events in Frankenstein.

The love triangle that exists between Victor, Konrad and Elizabeth is one of the better triangles in YA. While the thought of a woman coming between two brothers is a hard one to stomach, this doesn’t feel wrong. Elizabeth is presented as a wonderfully complex, caring, strong, intelligent, and brave young woman. It is no wonder both boys love her. Each loves different parts of her - Konrad her “angelic” side and Victor her wild “animalistic” side. I enjoyed that while the relationships certainly progress and push forward the plot they were secondary to the action.

The last few pages will leave you crushed, and gasping for the sequel.  The story pretty much begs to be made into a movie, and I hope it happens. Those looking for a glimpse of what happened to cause Victor  to go down his dark path will enjoy this well written read.
