Here is the Goodreads synopsis
There are whispers of a ghost in the slaughterhouse where sixteen-year-old Wen assists her father in his medical clinic—a ghost who grants wishes to those who need them most. When one of the Noor, men hired as cheap factory labor, humiliates Wen, she makes an impulsive wish of her own, and the Ghost grants it. Brutally.

Guilt-ridden, Wen befriends the Noor, including their outspoken leader, a young man named Melik. At the same time, she is lured by the mystery of the Ghost and learns he has been watching her … for a very long time.

As deadly accidents fuel tensions within the factory, Wen must confront her growing feelings for Melik, who is enraged at the sadistic factory bosses and the prejudice faced by his people at the hand of Wen’s, and her need to appease the Ghost, who is determined to protect her against any threat—real or imagined. She must decide whom she can trust, because as her heart is torn, the factory is exploding around her … and she might go down with it.
Only two things were needed for me to pick up this novel. First, the fact that it was Phantom of the Opera inspired and secondly, that it was set in a slaughterhouse. Sarah Fine offers up a brilliant take on the Phantom tale. One with all the heartbreak, sadness, despair, romance, and emotions of the original while breathing fresh life into it.

This was my first experience with Sarah Fine's writing, and I found it to be immensely enjoyable. Atmospheric with a nice balance between action and descriptions. The world of the slaughterhouse and the surrounding areas easily came to life through her words. The strength in her writing is decidedly in creating a world for her characters to inhabit, but her characters are also quite developed. Attention to both created an overall  rich story and experience.

The unhidden animosity that exists between the original factory workers, and the newly arrived Noor workers provides for a tense atmosphere. This combined with the myth of the Ghost, and the brutal accidents that begin to happen, create a perfect powder keg waiting to explode. The already taunt tension increases rapidly, and the novel keeps pace throughout. It's quieter moments are welcome relief from the increasing pressure, and woven in to keep the pacing steady throughout

From Wen's complicated relationship with her father, her friendships, and the blossoming romance(s) Sarah Fine reflects light on the workings of human emotions, and how unpredictable they are. Our capability to feel many things all at once (and sometimes toward the same person) is breathlessly shown. It makes the characters more complex and breathes life into them as well as the story.

The character of Raoul had always been underdeveloped to me. Each adaptation felt like his character was the weakest link. Sarah Fine takes this character and infuses him with a complex, layered personality. It's clear why Wen would be pulled to Melik. It's just as clear what would draw her to the Ghost. This allowed for richer emotions, and higher stakes because you become invested in both the Raoul and Phantom characters in this story. It was refreshing to see equal importance given to all the characters in this retelling.

No story like this would be complete without the heartache that comes with it. While this did not devastate me, there was a sadness. It also hints at more heartbreak to come in the second installment. This novel works as a stand alone for the most part, but the hints at the further continuation of the story left me excited. It's a world I will gladly come back to, and characters whom I look forward to reuniting with.

A painfully beautiful story that builds from the lore that inspired it in surprising, and pleasing ways. Fans of Phantom of the Opera will delight in the parallels while marveling at how the author made it her own.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

I had some amazing books land in my mailbox this week.

Of Metal and Wishes by Sarah Fine (goodreads)
Sway by Kat Spears (goodreads)
Dissonance by Erica O'Rourke (goodreads)
All Lined Up by Cora Carmack (goodreads)

Dollhouse by Anya Allyn (goodreads)

A huge thank you to Simon and Schuster Canada for Of Metal and Wishes and Dissonance. Thank you to Harper Collins Canada for All Lined Up. Lastly, thank you to Paper Lantern Lit for the copy of Dollhouse. I am part of the blog tour for that one, so look for that in June.

I won a copy of Sway from a Twitter contest. Very excited to read this one as it sounds great.

Happy weekend, and happy reading!

2014 Most Anticipated - Of Metal and Wishes

The next pick on my 2014 Most Anticipated list sold me with a few simple words - Phantom of the Opera in a slaughterhouse.  How amazing does that sound?

Luckily, the full Goodreads synopsis sounds equally amazing.
Brutally.

She must decide whom she can trust, because as her heart is torn, the factory is exploding around her … and she might go down with it.
Sarah graciously took the time to answer a few questions about the book, and herself. Her answers have made me want to read this even more!

1 Describe Of Metal and Wishes in three words

Strange. Romantic. Haunting.

2  Are you able to share a secret about one of the characters, the world, something that inspired something about the world/characters?

I was inspired to write Of Metal and Wishes after watching hidden camera footage of undocumented workers in a poultry factory. It was horrifying and oppressive and stuck with me for a long time afterward.

3 What three things do you need while revising?

Time to process the feedback and integrate it with my vision of the book. My playlist. Comfortable socks.

4 What about the Phantom of the Opera inspired you to write this particular story?

I wanted to take the incredible power, mystery, myth, and romance of Phantom and move it to a setting more macabre than beautiful, more brutal than whimsical. The meat factory in Of Metal and Wishes is a place that crushes people, and there, the Ghost has thrived as a sort of deity and hero ... but he's also known for punishing those who displease him.

5 What 2014 release are you most looking forward to?

I can't wait for the fourth book in Brigid Kemmerer's Elemental series, SECRET (comes out 1/28/14). I loved the first three. This one is about Nick, the brother who controls air, and in this story he learns to understand and embrace who he is while dealing with fear of what others will think of him ... and a few deadly enemies, of course (Confession: I've read it already. AND IT IS SO GOOD--romantic, heart-wrenching, tense, and action-packed--I can't wait to see it reach the hands of readers)

A huge thank you to Sarah for taking the time to answering these questions. I love stories that twist classics and Phantom of the Opera is one that isn't adapted often.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Of Metal and Wishes cover

Totally not what I was expecting. I do like the softness, and haunting beauty of it. I hope it matches the story, because from the synopsis I was expecting something MUCH different.

TV/MOVIE

Ray Donovan

I have become obsessed with this show, and Liev Schreiber in it. He's totally mesmerizing, and compelling as Ray. Austin Nichols also has a fun, meaty role that surprised me. It's an intense, twisty show. Got to admit, I do love the Boston accent that is so prevalent throughout the show.

So what are you obsessed with this week?

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Cover of Since You Been Gone by Morgan Matson

This is a cute cover that screams summer. I LOVE the premise of a 'to do' list, and this one sounds cute. I expect (because it mentions the friend is missing) that there might be some heavier issues too (which is perfect).

Cover of Sarah Fine's Of Metal and Wishes

This cover is be to revealed on September 5th! If you've read this synopsis you'll know why this excites me. Phantom of the Opera, and slaughterhouse! That's pretty much all you have to say. I am in! This is another one to keep your eye out for during ny 2014 Most Anticipated event. *winks*

OTHER

YA Authors Coming To Ottawa

Yup, that's right! Ottawa is getting some epic YA Authors for some amazing signings. LAUREN OLIVER and ELIZABETH WEIN are both coming so you can expect recaps of those events sometime this Autumn. Have I mentioned I love Autumn? Because I do!

Weekly Obsessions

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Second Star by Alyssa Sheinmel

Pretty sure my love of Peter Pan is well known. I've loved it since I first saw the Disney cartoon. There is something magical about the entire notion of Neverland. I stumbled across this book in the Publisher Weekly Spring 2014 preview. It was mentioned it revolves around a Peter/Wendy/Hook triangle and I was immediately sold. I haven't seen that done before and I can't wait to read this. Not a lot of details are known yet, but it's apparently more a contemporary twist on it. It means less magic, but it STILL sounds awesome. Peter as a surfer?! It has potential.

Of Metal and Wishes by Sarah Fine

Phantom of the Opera inspired, and it takes place in a slaughterhouse? SIGN ME UP! Read the synopsis and tell me that you don't want this. I can't wait for this. Phantom is one of those stories that I never thought of in terms of a YA novel being inspired by it, but it totally works.

The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

Who wasn't TOTALLY shocked by the new that JK Rowling had stealthily released a crime novel under a pen name. It's fantastic news and I can't wait to fit it into my review schedule ASAP! In case you missed it you can find all the details about JK Rowling's newest novel on Goodreads.

Bethany Griffin announcement

If you follow Bethany on twitter you would have seen a particular tweet that announced she has a new book announcement coming up... SOON! As in it'll be out in 2014 by the sounds of her mysterious tweet. I can't wait for the official details, and see what she has in store for us next. I LOVED the Masque duology and can't wait to read something else from Bethany.

OTHER

Comic Con

If you follow me on Twitter you've most likely seen me deliriously jealous of all those attending this year's Sand Diego Comic Con. There are so many amazing panels. I would LOVE to attend one year. The upside for everyone, even those not attending, is that there is a huge amount of really cool entertainment stuff released during this event. First looks, special footage, posters, and spoilers are some of my favourites.

Out of all the panel that have been held so far (not including Sat or Sunday events) the Spiderman one has me curious. First, Andrew Garfield is ADORABLE and he literally made me fall just a little more in awe of him. Dane Dehaan as Harry Osborn intrigues me. The guy is a phenomenal actor and I can't see what he brings to this role.

The other big panal? The Mortal Instruments. I had way too much fun watching the cast interviews. They all seem really great, and fun. Can not wait for this movie to come out. I'll be glued to coverage again today (Saturday) because the Once Upon A Time panel is today!

So what are yo obsessed with this week?
