Here is the Goodreads synopsis
When the mysterious fog of the Ruining crept over the world, the living died and the dead rose. Only the walled city of Viyara was left untouched.

The heirs of the city’s most powerful—and warring—families, Mahyanai Romeo and Juliet Catresou share a love deeper than duty, honor, even life itself. But the magic laid on Juliet at birth compels her to punish the enemies of her clan—and Romeo has just killed her cousin Tybalt. Which means he must die.

Paris Catresou has always wanted to serve his family by guarding Juliet. But when his ward tries to escape her fate, magic goes terribly wrong—killing her and leaving Paris bound to Romeo. If he wants to discover the truth of what happened, Paris must delve deep into the city, ally with his worst enemy . . . and perhaps turn against his own clan.

Mahyanai Runajo just wants to protect her city—but she’s the only one who believes it’s in peril. In her desperate hunt for information, she accidentally pulls Juliet from the mouth of death—and finds herself bound to the bitter, angry girl. Runajo quickly discovers Juliet might be the one person who can help her recover the secret to saving Viyara.

Both pairs will find friendship where they least expect it. Both will find that Viyara holds more secrets and dangers than anyone ever expected. And outside the walls, death is waiting. . .
Magic, zombies, necromancers, and a deadly fog. These elements do not typically bring to mind the love story of Romeo and Juliet. Rosamund Hodge twists their romance with fantasy elements to create something that is entirely unique, and still just as romantic.

Juliet as a sword wielding tool of vengeance may sound odd, but a Juliet who can kick ass is a welcome change to the one in Shakespeare's play. Sympathy is created as she is viewed as a tool to be used by everyone. She is someone who is not even given a proper name other than the title of The Juliet. She is meant to be used to avenge any wrong done against her family. Her wants and desires are not taken into consideration and that leads to her making rash decisions when it comes to her heart and her love for Romeo.

Romeo, at various times, provides comic relief. He is exactly the Romeo from Shakespeare's play. Flighty, overtly romantic and sentimental, and prone to dramatics. You get a true sense of their age from him, as Juliet is more harden and detached. We get glimpses of their courtship through flashbacks and that is the only time we see a more relaxed, and youthful Juliet. Their romance makes sense because Romeo treats her as a person, instead of a thing. He sees the girl behind The Juliet, and likes her for things that are truly her. He wants her for reasons that have nothing to do with her standing, and that makes a huge difference to Juliet.

The other characters in the classic, from Paris to Rosaline, are within these pages The biggest change is to Rosaline. She is a driven woman who is willing to sacrifice for what she feels in the greater good. Her and Juliet are not so different from each other underneath everything, and their interactions are the most unexpected and welcome parts of the story. A novel that offers two complex, driven, and motivated female characters is always welcome, and this one adds a little something extra to their dynamic.

Those worried that this is more of a romance than anything else will be delighted to know that there is plenty of action, betrayal, death, and high stakes. The romance may be part of what drives the story, but Rosamund Hodge ensured that each of the characters were more than just the romance, even Romeo. Death stalks these pages in multiple ways. First through the zombie like creatures that haunt these pages, and the fog that wait just outside the quickly weakening walls protecting Viyara. This struggle to survive, and the political dynamics at play are what take centre stage and are the most fascinating part of the story. The fantasy elements, in particular, are wonderfully crafted and written. We can easily picture the world, and it's inhabitants as a result.

There is a rich context to Juliet's story and having her agency taken away. That fact pulses through the story and is part of what drives Runajo and many of the other characters. The fact that Juliet sacrifices so much, and is not even given a proper name is never far from the reader's minds. We see the honour aspect to what she is doing her family, but the unsettling reality that she is having her choices taken away, and many of them without consent feels stronger. I hope this issue is continued to be explored in the subsequent novels in this series, because I feel this novel has only begun to examine this aspect of the story.

The only issue I had with this novel was that it did take quite a bit for me to fall into the story. The beginning of the story is not as engrossing as the later half.  There is plenty that has to built and introduced before getting to the heart of the story. It makes the pacing feel a little off. Luckily, once you do fall into the story it is entirely worth it for this complex world, and unique twist the author has written.

A highly imaginative and unique take on the Romeo and Juliet story. If the original was not to your liking, I predict you'll love this fantasy twist on the star-crossed romance. A story filled with death, love, and the lengths people will go to for both.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl's journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.

With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she's ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle-a shifting maze of magical rooms-enthralls her.

As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex's secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.
Beauty and the Beast meets Greek mythology. Cruel Beauty twists them into an engrossing story of love, forgiveness, sacrifice, and whimsy. With writing that is as beautiful as this novel's cover, dreamlike imagery, and two captivating characters, Cruel Beauty with a decadent story to fall into.

The effortlessly beautiful writing that lyrically weaves this story is one of the stand out elements of this novel. Rosamund Hodge's prose is not only fitting for this fairytale elements, but allows a whimsical element that compliments Ignifex's castle. This author has delivered an astonishingly well written debut that will captive as much for the story, as the writing.

Nyx's anger scorches off the page. Her life has been mapped out since before she was born, and death almost an inevitable conclusion to her brief existence. Her anger defines her, pushes her, and provides a catalyst for the most important part of the novel. It allows her to see Ignifex as something more than a monster. Kindness, and precedence is nothing something she is used to having. Her father bargained her away. Her sister is looked upon as the favourite. Her Aunt sees her as nothing more than a means of destroying the Gentle Lord. Nyx feels like a weapon, with her wants and feelings being an inconvenient afterthought. Ignifex  surprises her, because he shows respect, gives her room to make her own choices. Add this to a charming, if sometimes infuriating attractive demon and it's easy to see how she begins to fall for him.

The romance is swoon worthy. It's filled with yearning, angst, and a wickedness. These are two broken people, who are each drawn to wickedness, and yet bring out the best in one another. Nyx begins to understand forgiveness, and Ignifex finds something in himself worth fighting for. The push/pull of duty versus following your heart that occurs with Nyx's every breath is a battle that perfectly compliments this couple. Their seriously sexy banter was flirtatious, with a hint of war thrown in. Nyx never forgets what is at stake (or who she is dealing with), just as Ignifex never forgets that people want him dead.

Greek mythology and the classic Beauty and the Beast tale weave together surprisingly well. The compliment each other, and allowed Rosamund to take this story into different directions. The influence, and inspiration she garnered from various sources is evident, and yet she twists it to create something that's all her own. The result is a sensual, and thrilling fairytale in it's own right.

An intensely romantic, lush tale that weaves together as beautifully as any fairytale. Cruel Beauty delighted an surprised me in the best way possible. I look forward to anything else Ms Hodge releases in the future, and urge you to pick up this twist on the tale that is as old as time.

2014 Most Anticipated -- Cruel Beauty

My second selection (although these are in no particular order) for 2014's Most Anticipated Event is a Beauty and the Beast retelling that sounds simply stunning, and even has a fantastic teaser trailer.

This novel has one of the prettiest covers. It may just be the most stunning of 2014.....

Here is the synopsis of Cruel Beauty....

With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love
Amazing right? I was lucky to have Rosamund Hodge answer a few questions about Cruel Beauty, and her own choice for 2014 Most Anticipated.

1 Describe Cruel Beauty in 3 words

"Lief or loath."

(--which is an archaic way of saying "willing or unwilling." It's a phrase I've been waiting to use since I was fourteen, it turns up in a crucial scene of Cruel Beauty, and it could apply to all the characters, since they're all faced with things they have to do whether they like it or not.)

(And I guess I used more than three words. Oops.)

2 What aspect of Beauty and Beast's story inspired you to write Cruel Beauty?

Its connection to other stories. I'd always liked Beauty and the Beast, but I'd never felt any need to retell it. Completely separately, I'd always loved the myth of Cupid and Psyche (but again, never felt the need to retell it). Then one day I read the fairy tale East of the Sun, West of the Moon, and it was like a bomb going off in my brain as I realized that these three stories are the same story. I'd just never seen it before because East of the Sun, West of the Moon is the halfway point that makes the connection obvious.

One of the things I've always loved about myths and fairy tales is the way they meld and mutate and borrow one another's bones. It was when I stopped seeing Beauty and the Beast as a separate story and started seeing it as part of a larger mythic continuum that I wanted to retell it.

3 As a debut author, what has most surprised you about the process of getting a novel ready for publication?

I think the way scheduling works, which I sort of knew about before, but has still been pretty surreal to experience. Because it takes so long to produce a book, drum up publicity, etc.,  all the writing has to be done way in advance. My first book comes out in three months, and that's hugely exciting and absorbing. But at the same time, I just finished drafting my second book and now we're moving into edits, a process that seems likely to consume every last one of my brain cells. It's like living in two worlds at once.

4 Are you able to share a secret about one of the characters, the world, something that inspired something about the world/characters?

My heroine, Nyx, has a secret she's been keeping all her life: she hates her family. Not just her father, who bargained her away; she also hates her sister, who loves her and never did anything wrong except be the one their father chose to live. This secret hatred--and the guilt that she feels over it--is one of the driving forces of her character. And it was inspired by C. S. Lewis's novel Till We Have Faces, which is a retelling of Cupid and Psyche from the point of view of Orual, Psyche's sister. I first read it when I was eighteen. It's a brilliant novel in many ways--you should all read it!--but one of the things that most struck me during my first, passionate reading was that Orual was an extremely flawed person with really ugly emotions, but she still got to be the heroine of her own story. I loved that, because I had plenty of really ugly emotions myself, and it was hard to find heroines who resembled me that way. One of my goals for Cruel Beauty was to write a heroine who often was not nice, and who could even be really awful sometimes, but who still got to fall in love, become a hero, and tell her own story.

5 What 2014 release are you most excited for?

That would be Nomad by R. J. Anderson, which releases in the U.K. and Canada this January. It's the latest in her brilliant, inventive series of Faery books, and I can't wait to read it.

Thank you Rosamund for answering these questions. Pretty sure you all will be running to add Cruel Beauty to your Goodreads. It will be in stores January 28, 2014. I love how passionate Rosamund seems about the novel, and the mythology behind her inspiration. It's made me even more excited to devour this one.

Waiting on Wednesday... Cruel Beauty

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom—all because of a reckless bargain her father struck. And since birth, she has been training to kill him.

Betrayed by her family yet bound to obey, Nyx rails against her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, she abandons everything she’s ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, disarm him, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle—a shifting maze of magical rooms—enthralls her. As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex's secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. But even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, could she refuse her duty to kill him?

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.
I love fairytale retellings, and this synopsis sounds amazing. Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favourites, so this book can not be released quick enough. On a side note - how amazing is that cover?!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Tampa by Alissa Nutting

I have to admit I am super curious about this one. Just read the Goodreads synopsis. It's being called a female narrated Lolita, and that immediately piqued my interest. Is it controversial? OF COURSE. It's supposed to make you uncomfortable, and repulsed. It sounds like one of those books that will invoke strong opinions, and that excites me. I love novels that make you think, feel, and yes, even squirm a little. Needless to say, I am most likely going to check this one out. I might see what others thing first, because there is a potential for this to be a bit of a mess, but something tells me it's going to be an intense, and well written read.

cover of Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

I.Can't.Even. This cover is so pretty. It's one of those covers you immediately want to hang on your walls because it's so striking. The synopsis also sounds amazing. If you follow my blog you're well aware of my fairytale obsession, so this seems perfect.

TV

Friday Night Lights

If you haven't watched this incredible series, please do it immediately. I LOVE it so much. I am hoping to binge the rest of the series that I have left really soon.

OTHER

Vacation Dreaming

As usual, I tend to start day dreaming about vacation this time of year. Sadly I won't be going on any kind of vacation until after BEA 2014 but that doesn't mean I am not already in planning mode. I am debating either Disney World again, Los Angeles/Las Vegas trip, or perhaps even going to Europe again (I have been dying to to go to Italy). Each of them have huge drawing points, and I am in full research mode.

So what are you obsessed with this week?
