Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Life turned upside down for Maddy Montgomery when she found out she was half-Angel and was catapulted into the scene of flashbulbs, paparazzi, and the fervent adulation that comes with being in the celebrity Angel world. She's trying to juggle her ordinary life—high school, family, friends—with the intense demands of being in the public eye as heartthrob Angel Jackson Godspeed's girlfriend.

And now Maddy must face the most difficult choice of her life. She's been offered the chance to become a Guardian. This means entering into dangerous and high stakes training, with no guarantee that she can succeed. But more than that, it would mean leaving her mortal life behind—forever—and allying with the Angels at a time when their relationship with humans is heading for war. . . .
Glitz, glamour, and betrayal take center stage in this sequel to Immortal City. Agenda driven characters, and an intriguing political tone are back dropped against the glittering Hollywood skyline.

The crime noir tone and feel I loved so much in book one shifts a bit in the sequel. This novel focuses more on the glitz and glamorous side of Hollywood. We see how seductive the spotlight can be, and how easy it is to get caught up in the current when you’re the next big thing.

Maddy’s life has changed greatly from the one she knew. She’s now not only Jackson’s girlfriend, but half angel. Her life is thrust into the spotlight. The changes in Maddy's character are expected, and obvious. Her moral compass is still one of the strongest in the series. Her belief that protecting those who need it, regardless of background or financial means, is a defining trait for her. However, she is tempted by the celebrity aspect of the Angel's lives. The adoration is addictive, and it's easy to see how she could fall under it's spell.

Jackson’s character arc surprised me in this novel. He takes a path I should have seen coming, but I was not prepared for the lengths in which he was willing to go. He is devastated by loosing the ability to fly. His grit and determination to regain his strength is admirable. He isn't used to be the 'hottest Angel' and falling from grace is tough on the proud Jackson. Seeing this side to him, an unsure of where his fits, and slowly defeated side, was much different than the Jackson I was anticipating. It's another layer to a character that seemed too perfect in the first one. His character, among others, shows that even Angels make mistakes, and that nobody is perfect.

The political side to this novel was, by far, my favourite part. A war is brewing between angel and humans and as the story goes on the pressure intensifies. The unease many felt in the first novel over how the Angels run their protection for pay service is heightened in this one. Agendas are revealed, sometimes coming as a shock. It all leads up to a final choice Maddy has to make - will she stand with the humans or embrace her Angel side? The answer is more complicated than Maddy, or I,  expected. I like that she was conflicted, and at times disappointed in those around her. The build up to the war is gradual, until the pressure pops and everything moves at a rapid pace. It’s where Scott Speer’s writing stands out in this sequel.

One of my favourite parts of Immortal City was the character of Detective Sylvester. I could almost envision him an trench coat. He reads like someone straight out of the old Hollywood movies. His role in this installment is equally important. I love that he is played as intelligent, hard working and capable. Often in novels the detectives/police are portrayed as either clueless or everything comes too easily for them. This feels more realistic in how he gathers evidence, sifts through things, and takes the time to verify his information.

The ending, of course, left me wanting to read the third novel immediately. Things have gotten more complicated and I can’t wait to see what is next for Maddy, Jacks, and the rest. The tension has hit it’s breaking point, and I feel that we are in for an explosive finale…if indeed this is only a trilogy.

A novel I enjoyed for it’s political aspects, and characters, but left me missing what I truly loved from the first book. - that gritty, noir feel that haunted it’s pages. Fans of angels, and the glitz and glamour of Hollywood will devour this series.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

Pretty sure that almost everyone's mailbox will feature the same book this week! Super excited to finally have my hands on it too. Clockwork Princess is finally out! It's cover is even prettier 'in person'.

Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare (Goodreads)
Natural Born Angel by Scott Speer (Goodreads)

I won Natural Born Angel in a twitter contest, and was surprised to see that Scott Speer signed the copy that was sent to me! A huge thank you to him for hosting the contest.

***SPOILERS FOR IMMORTAL CITY***

My pick this week is Natural Born Angel by Scott Speer

I really enjoyed Immortal City, and loved the crime noir feel of the novel. The glitz, and glamour of Hollywood back dropped against angel murders made for an intriguing read. I can't wait to see what's next for Jackson and Maddy.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He's days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone's obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect--everyone except for Madison Montgomery.

Maddy's the one girl in Angel City who doesn't breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn't recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson's scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi - and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels' wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it's up to Maddy to save Jackson.
The novel opens with someone driving recklessly down a sharp turning road. The guy is pushing the limits because he can; he is protected by an angel. These are not the Angels that you’re used to. These Angels are considered celebrities by the public. They protect people but do it for a price. If you lucky enough to afford this protection, and be assigned an Angel you can take the risk. For the other, less fortunate people, you won’t be as lucky. The first chapter make you aware of the glaringly unfair advantage the rich and powerful have.

Jackson is the hottest, and most talked about Angel in all of Angel City. He also happens to be one of the youngest Angels to be commissioned as a Guardian. He is followed by paparazzi, on the cover of many magazines, and the dream guardian of girls (and women) all over the world. Jackson is a little full of himself, but it doesn’t come across as annoyingly so. He has had people tell him how special, wonderful and good looking he is and it’s hard not to let that go to your head. Jackson is also very focused. His duty is very important to him. The protection he is assigned is going to be his number one priority and he takes it very seriously. He’s been training is whole life for this. It’s this part of his personality that I really liked. He’s doing what he thinks is right and is trying to not disappoint anyone. He has a huge weight of expectations on his shoulders, and the pressure might just prove to be too much for the young angel.

Madison is immediately likeable. She’s just a girl who wants to get through high school, get into a college and get out of Angel City. She doesn’t have time for boys, parties, and especially has no time to obsess over the Angels like everyone else. Her parents died when she was young and she lives with her Uncle and they are just trying to survive. Maddy wants nothing to do with Jackson when she first meets him. Something that is made even more clear when she goes on her first date with him. His world and her world do not mix, and Maddy isn’t really interested in trying to fit into it. I loved that she didn’t just fall at his feet. I can totally see why Jackson would pursue her because she offered him something he didn’t have before - a chance to be seen as Jackson instead of JACKSON GOODSPEED.

This novel is much grittier than I was expecting. It’s filled with the darker side of LA but infused with Jackson’s “celebrity” lifestyle. The author uses rain, darkness, and an overall feeling of dread to keep the flim  noir feel throughout the novel. I can picture the detectives in trench coats, and old Hollywood glamour.

The author has a background in directing. This comes through in his writing and as a result this novel practically screams to be made into a CW TV show. So many of the scenes are laid out in a way that you can not only visualize the surroundings but it leaves you with a feel of the scene. The first time we are introduced to the horror of angel wings on the Walk of Fame is chilling, and set up to be a striking image. The blood, mixing with the grittiness and rain in LA back dropped against the glamour of the Angels is almost a metaphor for the novel itself.

The twists and surprises in the novel were actual surprises. There were a few I could see coming, but plenty of things caught me by surprise. The angel serial killer part of the storyline was quite well done. The killer’s reasoning is believable, and the systematic way it was being done was chilling. The motivation behind it had turned into something darker, and that often drives people to extremes. I was happy to say that I did not figure out the killer before it was revealed but upon reflection the clues are there.

Scott Speer mixes danger, glitz, glamour, romance, and adds a huge dash of crime noir to create something really unique. This book may not be for everyone, but I fully enjoyed the atmosphere, characters and surprises the author created.

In My Mailbox

This is a weekly meme hosted by the awesome Kristi at The Story Siren. It gives us a chance to showcase the books we got during the week.

I had a pretty awesome book week. I got a book that I have been really excited about.

I have three books that I got this week

Immortal City by Scott Speer (goodreads)
Everblue by Brenda Pandos (goodreads)
Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer(goodreads)

Pretty sure I *might* have mentioned Immortal City before. It sounds awesome. I may have did a little happy dance when it showed up in my mailbox. Saving this until Jan when it'll count towards my Debut Author Challenge is going to be HARD. A huge thank you to the lovely ladies at Penguin Canada for sending this along.

I won from the lovely Evie @ Bookish the copy of Everblue. The author shipped this and it's signed. She also included an awesome bookmark. I am super excited to start this one.

I had been on a waiting list for what seems like forever to get Wolfsbane, but now I have it. I am hoping to dive into it soon.

I have been super excited about Gilt by Katherine Longshore. I have some amazing stuff planned for the release, and Katherine was kind enough to send me some GORGEOUS bookmarks for the event I am planning. They are stunning! I am sad these photos do not do them justice.

What books did you get this week? Leave me a comment and I will check it out.

Happy reading everyone!

My Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

So this week my obsessions are:

BOOKS

The cover for Immortal City by Scott Speer

I love this cover so much more than the cover on the ARCs. This cover seems like it fits so much better with the story. I love the palm trees in the background, and the hot angel with the arm tattoo doesn't hurt either!

MOVIES

The Hunger Games movie trailer

Anyone that follows me on Twitter could guess this would be on here. I love our brief glimpse of Cinna! <3! Jennifer looks great as Katniss (that scene where she volunteers - PERFECT). I totally get chills when the countdown starts, and they all start running. My heart starts to race, and I am on the edge of my seat. It's going to be intense. I am so looking forward to this movie. Can it be March already?!

What are you obsessed with this week?

Not only is this book released on my birthday, but it sounds awesome. I am both repulsed by, and intrigued by the angel wings on the Walk of Fame. The cover is hot! The guy, the arm tattoo - seriously DROOL!
