Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

TV/MOVIE

Me Before You Movie Poster

I've been obsessed with the Me Before You novel since I read it, and have been even more obsessed with the movie adaptation. This week we were finally gifted with a movie poster and trailer.

This movie poster is perfect and I need it for my apartment.

Just from this movie poster I am able to tell that I am going to be a crying mess at the theatre when this releases. The red dress!!

Me Before You Movie Trailer

The day after we were given the movie poster, the first trailer was released and it is just as perfect as I anticipated it would be. It's beautiful, and so similar to the book.

The bumble bee tights, the red dress, the chemistry, the lines that are directly lifted from the book. This is as if they've taken the mental picture I had in my head and made it real. I ugly cried through this entire trailer and part of that was simply seeing these characters I love so much come to life through Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke. They are a perfect Will and Lou and this trailer has only increased my need to see this movie as soon as possible.

Excuse me while I go watch this a million times from now until the June release date.

A Criminal Magic by Lee Kelly

A Criminal Magic by Lee Kelly
Release Date - February 2, 2016
Publisher Website - Simon and Schuster
Publisher Social Media - Twitter
Pages - 384 pages
My Rating - 5/5
**received for honest review**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
THE NIGHT CIRCUS meets PEAKY BLINDERS in Lee Kelly's new magical realism, crossover novel.

Magic is powerful, dangerous and addictive - and after passage of the 18th Amendment, it is finally illegal.

It's 1926 in Washington, DC, and while Anti-Sorcery activists have achieved the Prohibition of sorcery, the city's magic underworld is booming. Sorcerers cast illusions to aid mobsters' crime sprees. Smugglers funnel magic contraband in from overseas. Gangs have established secret performance venues where patrons can lose themselves in magic, and take a mind-bending, intoxicating elixir known as the sorcerer's shine.

Joan Kendrick, a young sorcerer from Norfolk County, Virginia accepts an offer to work for DC's most notorious crime syndicate, the Shaw Gang, when her family's home is repossessed. Alex Danfrey, a first-year Federal Prohibition Unit trainee with a complicated past and talents of his own, becomes tapped to go undercover and infiltrate the Shaws.

Through different paths, Joan and Alex tread deep into the violent, dangerous world of criminal magic - and when their paths cross at the Shaws' performance venue, despite their orders, and despite themselves, Joan and Alex become enchanted with one another. But when gang alliances begin to shift, the two sorcerers are forced to question their ultimate allegiances and motivations. And soon, Joan and Alex find themselves pitted against each other in a treacherous, heady game of cat-and-mouse.

A CRIMINAL MAGIC casts a spell of magic, high stakes and intrigue against the backdrop of a very different Roaring Twenties.
When a novel promises you a reading experience that is The Night Circus meets The Peaky Blinders you pretty much have to read it. When a novel follows up on that promise? You fall in deep book love. Lee Kelly's novel of 1920's gangsters meets magic is everything the synopsis promises, and more. It creates a stunningly vibrant world that will leave you desperate for a sequel.

The world is pure magic. It's vivid, bright, and one that you can easily lose yourself in. I wanted to step into the pages of this book and get lost within it's shining rooms, this world's version of speakeasies. Lee Kelly has crafted a world that doesn't just come to life, it casts a spell on you. The world becomes another character, and one that is the heartbeat of the novel. As a result of it's mesmerizing setting it is the kind of novel that begs to be turned into a movie or television show. The world, it's characters, and the storyline all pulse with a fierce light under Lee Kelly's talented prose and all of them are easily imagined.

Told in dual narrative, both Alex and Joan come to life. Each has a distinct voice, and the dual narration compliments the story narrative. Both are vital the overarching plot. They allow us a glimpse of two individuals who might be in over their heads with the situations they find themselves in. Both of them have their reasons for the choices they make, and Lee Kelly makes you understand those choices, even if you might not agree with them. The use of the dual narrative allows us to see a full picture of the magic underground and the criminals who inhabit it. Each narrative fleshes out the world  and brings an added texture to the other.

The magic system that these characters use is complex, but not overly detailed. It works because Lee Kelly has presented it in a logical, straight forward way that feels cohesive. She also show rather than tells. There is no info dumping. Instead we learn about the magic through the characters, and the plot in an organic way. As a result, everything about it clicks for the reader, and you instantly feel comfortable with the limitations, rules, and laws of this world's magic. The 'shine' that the sorcerers brew is an obvious stand in for alcohol, but it's the other things magic is used for that makes this world dangerous. Both the positive and negative elements of this world's magic are embraced within these pages, and it's used to shine a light on the characters themselves.

The romance quickly became one of my favourites. Swoon worthy interactions, a touch of magic, and a hint of danger added a delicious allure to every glance and touch. The fact that Alex is undercover, and that Joan is part of what he is there to take down, is never far from your mind. This creates an unbelievable tension that only heightens the sparks and sexual tension. Chemistry is hard to capture on the page, but Lee Kelly has done it here.

A Criminal Magic is filled with enchantment, wonder, romance, and 1920's goodness right from the very first page. It also manages to keep you entranced until it's delectable final pages. It's unique twist on the prohibition era is fresh and entirely alluring. This is an unmissable read for those who love historically influenced novels, and for those who love being swept away into magical worlds.

Waiting On Wednesday ..... And I Darken

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is And I Darken by Kiersten White

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
NO ONE EXPECTS A PRINCESS TO BE BRUTAL. And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.

Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, who’s expected to rule a nation, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.

But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.
This book had me with the promise of a female Vlad the Impaler. I am sure this is going to be an amazing story filled with wonderfully rich characters. I cannot wait to devour this one, but wait I must. This will not be available until the summer.

Expected release date - June 28, 2016

Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell

Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
For as long as she can remember, Gwendolyn Allister has never had a place to call home—all because her mother believes that monsters are hunting them. Now these delusions have brought them to London, far from the life Gwen had finally started to build for herself. The only saving grace is her best friend, Olivia, who’s coming with them for the summer.

But when Gwen and Olivia are kidnapped by shadowy creatures and taken to a world of flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey, Gwen realizes her mom might have been sane all along.

The world Gwen finds herself in is called Neverland, yet it’s nothing like the stories. Here, good and evil lose their meaning and memories slip like water through her fingers. As Gwen struggles to remember where she came from and find a way home, she must choose between trusting the charming fairy-tale hero who says all the right things and the roguish young pirate who promises to keep her safe.

With time running out and her enemies closing in, Gwen is forced to face the truths she’s been hiding from all along. But will she be able to save Neverland without losing herself?
The easiest way to get me to read something is to entice me with the promise of Peter Pan. Unhooked easily made my most anticipated of 2016 as soon as I read the synopsis. I was happy to find that while there was much for this Peter Pan fangirl to love, the story ultimately works on it's own. Offering up roguish pirates, yesterday villains and brilliant world building, Unhooked will have you spellbound from page one.

The popular twist of Peter being a much darker character is used here, but Hook is not painted as a hero either. They are both hiding dark secrets and are willing to lie to get what they want. As a result both Gwen and the reader are unsure of who to trust. I appreciated that there was no romanticizing of abusive behaviour within these pages, and that certain actions were painted in the light that they should have been. Neither guy is given a free pass, but one is decidedly way more horrible than the other. Lisa Maxwell also, wisely, never has one of the guys treat the love interest horribly which is something that happens (and is forgiven) all too often in other novels.

The romance is going to be one of the favourite elements for a lot of readers. I, personally, found it pretty swoon worthy and not overpowering to the story. The love triangle that is hinted as in the synopsis is barely a whisper within the pages of the story so those who avoid love triangles need not worry when picking up this title.

The setting of Neverland is vibrant, and as rich as I would have hoped. Neverland is almost a character itself, and Lisa Maxwell brings her version to life with her vivid descrptions. She creates an ever changing, stunning, deadly, beautiful land for her characters to inhabit and it only adds to this novel's charms. This may not be the Neverland we're used to,but it's none the less magical. It is a setting that holds it's owns secrets and these secrets are the heart of the novel.

A novel that, while inspired by Peter Pan, fully stands on it's own. It uses the Peter Pan legend, as well as pulling from other mythology, to create a story that is uniquely it's own. While I would be hesitant to call this a retelling, it certainly is inspired by the classic tale, and fans will delight in the homage Lisa Maxwell has paid to the source material. It offers it's own kind of magic within it's pages, and that certainly makes it worth the read.

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

Only one book to share this week! It was a surprise one from Harper Collins Canada. A huge thank you to them for sending this one along.
