Best of 2016 ... Non Bookish

It feels like 2016 had been one year long suck fest, particularly towards the end. It is hard to remember that there were some good things about 2016. I listed the top books I read this year in a previous post, and now I am going to share the best of everything else - movies, TV, etc.

So here is what I loved in 2016

TELEVISION

Stranger Things

An incredible show that is filled with 80s nostalgia. It boasts a cast of adorable and talented kids, the return of Winona Ryder and was one of the biggest additions to pop culture this year.

If you haven't watched this I highly recommend you binge watch it immediately. You'll completely fall in love with the entire cast (but especially Eleven) and will be dying for them to release season two.

Lucifer

I was pleasantly surprised by this show. It is filled with charm, humour and wit. Tom Ellis plays a very charming and endearing Lucifer, but the rest of the cast shines equally as bright. Chloe and  Mazikeen in particular have really been given character development.

The ship in this show is on of my top ships right now. They are adorable together and they make each other better which I love. Binge this if you haven't because it will definitely surprise you.

Mr Robot Season 2

People had mixed feelings about the second season Mr Robot. I, personally, loved it. I felt it kept the perspective right where it needs to be - on Elliott. I also felt that it handled the 'big reveal' of the season beautifully. The acting was, as usual, stellar from the entire cast.

The finale left me with a lot of questions, and has caused me to have a certain theory that, if proven correct, will take the show in an entirely new (and unforseen) direction. I cannot wait for season 3.

OTHER

Funko Pops

I was late getting into these but I am now obsessed. They are super cute and they pretty much have something for everyone. It is a slippery slope though because you won't be able to stop at one.

I am super excited for the Stranger Things set in 2017!

My Disney Trip

On a more personal note, one of the highlights of 2016 for me was getting to go to ALA in Orlando and visiting Disney World. I go to see my friend Kelly and generally had a great time.

Disney is one of my favourite places, and it really is magical.

I am hoping to go back soon (maybe even next  year) and would especially love to see it decorated for Halloween as I haven't had that experience yet.

MOVIE

Me Before You movie adaptation

A movie adaptation that was highly faithful to the source material and had some great casting. I loved both Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin as Lou and Will. Emilia was especially adorable as Lou. She was perfectly cast and managed to light up the screen. Sam was equally well cast as Will. He had that dry sense of humour and charm that Will had in the book.

It had all the major scenes from the book and ensured that the feel and tone of Jojo Moynes novel was felt throughout the entire movie. It was heartbreaking and that is exactly what I wanted from the movie.

Captain America: Civil War

This movie rounded out the Captain American trilogy nicely, while securing the future of the Marvel Universe movies. The introduction of Black Panther was brilliant and pretty much made everyone excited for his upcoming solo movie. He was one of the highlights and was cast perfectly. The new Spiderman proved to be charming and ensured that everyone would be excited about his upcoming movie. The humour of Peter Parker was there in spades.

I happen to be Team Cap so I especially loved everything between Steve, and his group. Bucky is my favourite and this rounded out the Winter Solider story arc nicely as well. It's a fantastic trilogy and a fantastic movie all on its own.

La La Land

A wistful throwback to classic Hollywood musicals that is every bit as romantic, whimsical and sweet as you would expect. There are a lot of callbacks to iconic scenes, and an overall feeling of nostalgia is present during the entire movie.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have a natural chemistry and rapport that shines through their scenes and made this movie even more heartfelt. It is one I will be adding to my collection and one I predict will take home plenty of awards come awards season.

Top 15 Books I Read In 2016

The end of the year is upon us and that means Best Of lists. Today I am going to talk about my 15 favouite books of 2016. They may not be released in 2016 (hence the title of the post) but any book I read in 2016 counts.

These are in no particular order (that would be impossible) and each of them link to my review (where applicable).

1 - A Criminal Magic by Lee Kelly

A novel filled with wonder, romance, magic and that special allure of something forbidden. This book puts a fun twist on the prohibition era and creates a world that is unforgettable. A television adaption of this is in the works from Rob Thomas (the creator of Veronica Mars and iZombie) and I cannot wait to see this vivid world brought to life.

2 - Heartless by Marissa Meyer

A whimsical take on Wonderland that captures the essence of Lewis Carroll's original work. Marissa was woven in one of her trademark romances and offers up a heartbreaking look at the woman who would become Queen of Hearts.

3- Everland by Wendy Spinale

One of the most inventive and imaginative takes on the Peter Pan lore. A story that blends steampunk with the classic story of the boy who would not grow up and does so effortlessly. The world is vividly created, and the story is wonderfully plotted. I am dying for the sequel which further blends steampunk and fairytales together.

4- Asking For It by Louise O'Neill

An unflinching, brutally, honest look at rape culture, and its impact on how rape survivors are viewed and treated. This is hard to read at times, but so incredibly important. If you want to know why someone would choose to withdraw their complaint, or even not come forward at all, this book will shine a harsh light on the reality they face by coming forward.

5- A Night In With Audrey Hepburn/Marilyn Monroe by Lucy Holliday

I am kind of cheating by including both these books as one entry but it technically makes 15. This series is adorable, and tinged with more than a touch of Hollywood magic. It is reminiscent of Bridget Jones' Diary and has a main character who is just as charming. It is a perfect series to binge read by the pool. It's light, humourous and offers the perfect amount of escapism.

6- Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

I have not reviewed this yet, but look for my review early in the new year. This series is filled with jaw dropping surprises, complex sibling bonds, and well crafted fantasy elements. This story has some of my favourite romances I've read this year, simply because they add to the plot without feeling forced or distracting.

7- Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

A sequel that lives up to the first novel in the series, and expands upon it. This novel twists the story into a new direction which only enriches the world and the characters. An ending that basically leaves you willing to beg for the next book, and a cast filled with flawed, but engaging characters has only cemented my love for this series.

8- American Girls by Alison Umminger

Alison Umminger's razor sharp writing is the stand out from this story, but only slightly because everything else is just as wonderful. This is a story of girls both lost and found. This is a story of the harm society expectations can cause girls, and more glaringly the harm they can cause themselves and others. A snarky, fully developed voice for the main character ensures you're entirely in the story and I cannot wait to see what Alison writes next.

9- The Female Of The Species by Mindy McGinnis

This is a story about many different types of female characters. More importantly it is a story about female characters who are everything female characters are not supposed to be. It is also a jarring, and brutal look at rape culture and the way it shapes women's views of themselves, and others. It is a novel that is hard to read, but one that demands you not look away.

10 - How To Break A Boy by Laurie Devore

My review for this one will be up closer to its release date, but this is a story for everyone who likes their female characters morally ambiguous. It has been compared to many of Courtney Summers' novels and I can see why. The writing is sharp, and the characters are given distinct voices (even when we're not given their point of view). A story that is filled with female characters making questionable decisions and owning them. It also shows that these type of characters can still be worthy. It is not a zero sum game, and there are many shades of grey on the moral spectrum.

11 - The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

Morgan Matson's novels are always smile inducing and pair perfectly with summer. She creates these characters that you want to befriend, and stories that you want to disappear into. The Unexpected Everything reminds you to go off track every now and again because the unexpected is sometimes more magical than anything you have planned. It'll make you want to have a summer romance, and call your best friends to go for ice cream.

12 - This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills

One of the best contemporary novels I read this year. A story of friendship, self growth, and letting people in. It was wonderfully written, and filled with some unforgettable characters. Bonus points for the parents having such a large role in the story and not disappearing as they normally do in YA novels.

13 - Overdrive by Dawn Ius

A fun, high octane read that is filled with high speed car chases, a sexy romance and some seriously hot cars. If you're into heist novels with impossible odds this is one book you'll want to pick up. Dawn crafts a whirlwind journey through Las Vegas that will leave you begging for a follow up.

14 - The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee

This is one for fans of CW television shows. It is also for people who love their novels to be filled with delicious drama and jaw dropping twists combined with some seriously addictive writing. This is the definition of a summer page turner, and one that will ensure you get a sunburn because you won't able to to put it down.

What book is your favourite of 2016? Any of mine make your list, too? Let me know in the comments.

I am ALA 2016 bound!

I am leaving soon to head to Orlando, Florida for this year's ALA conference. I am set for a week of fun in the sunshine state complete with a trip to Disney World. I am looking forward to meeting some authors, especially Emery Lord (that is going to include one embarrassing level of fangirling). I am beyond excited to spend the day at Disney World. I want to eat Shake Shack and catch up with my friend Kelly whom I haven't seen in a year. It's going to be lots of fun!

I am, also, excited about the books that might be there. I am hoping to get a copy of Jay Asher's What Light. I am also hoping Aprilynne Pike's Glitter is there along with Flower by Shea Olsen and Elizabeth Craft. I am keeping ALA low key since I also went to BEA this year. It's going to be fun to see how different the two events are and what might be at ALA that wasn't at BEA.

There will be little to no disruption to the blog so I hope you'll still stop by while I am gone. Reviews will go up as scheduled as will some other posts. I am going to do my best to tweet about them when I am able.

Please say hi if you see me there. I am super shy but love chatting with fellow book nerds when I get a chance. You can follow me on Twitter, and Instagram as I will be tweeting and sharing photos while there!

My Bookish Wishlist

I have had a disastrous week with real life stuff getting in the way of reading/blogging. I had planned to put up a review but my time has been spent getting my apartment back in order (or trying to at least) after a flood. I am, instead, going to talk about what books I WISH were available to read. The books that I would immediately add to my most anticipated list based on their synopsis alone.

Regular reviews and things should resume tomorrow!

MY BOOKISH WISHLIST

You may have seen (or taken part in) a Twitter hashtag that was used for readers and bloggers to express their bookish wishlist in hopes that putting it out there may spark suggestions for books that fit, or inspire an author to maybe write the books we're dying to read. This post is heavily inspired by that. I m unsure who started the hashtag, but it was fantastic and I hope another one is scheduled soon.

Here are the books I wish I could be reading ...

1 Gender swapped fairytales - Give me a princess who has to wake the prince. Make the girl the Beast instead of a Beauty. We've retold and twisted these fairytales so many times that I want something truly unique if we're going to have another.

2 A novel (or series) inspired by The Craft - How is this not a thing already? I want a dark YA witch series that captivates me as much as the movie did.

3 A novel (or series) inspired by The Crow - This movie has always been one of my favourites and there is something tragically romantic about coming back to life to avenge the death of yourself and your love. I am already in love with the idea of what a complex, messy main character this series could have (bonus points if you make it a woman who comes back instead).

4 An amazing Bonnie and Clyde inspired novel - 2017 may have this covered, but I am still including it on the list. I have always been deeply fascinated by this and I would love a story that gives Bonnie her own agency instead of painting her as a woman who just followed along.

5 A Black Dahlia inspired YA novel (or one written by Gillian Flynn if adult) - As you can see from this list my tastes skew a little darker. I have wanted this book forever and nobody (that I am aware of) has written it. My dream scenario would be if Gillian Flynn decided to write this (because that would be an AMAZING novel) but I would devour anything anyone wrote.

6 More villain origin stories - 2017 sort of already has this covered, but I am not above asking for more. I've read Marissa Meyer's Heartless which imagines what turned a young woman into the Queen of Hearts and I was completely captivated. I want more villains to be given this treatment in the future. Bonus points if their back story doesn't try to portray them in an entirely sympathetic light.

7 A Jack Frost origin story -  This is entirely inspired by the AMAZING back story that Rise of the Guardians gave him. It was tragic, and perfect and I could see one heck of a book series about this character.

8 A road trip novel that is based on iconic Hollywood settings -  A group of friends road tripping to visit iconic places relating to Hollywood icons (Graceland for Elvis Presley as an example). You could make it a cute contemporary or even go darker.

9 Pirates - Mermaids, Davy Jones' Locker, and hot swashbuckling pirates! Create a deep mythology and give me some female characters just as ruthless as their male counterparts and I will be entirely happy.

10 Penny Dreadful in book form - It's not secret that I love this series. The most recent season gave me chills when Doctor Frankenstein and Doctor Jekyll first interacted with each other. Seeing these iconic characters twist together in new and exciting ways has made me ravenous for more.

11 Paranormal - I miss this genre so much! I want vampires, werewolves, and all types of monsters. I feel there is still plenty of stories to tell in this genre and am desperate for something new and exciting.

Anything you're dying to see in novels? Is there a premise you really want to read? Agree with any of the suggestions on my wishlist? Let me know in the comments.

Book Expo America 2016 - Day Three

The final day of Book Expo America was certainly the busiest for me. It's the day I had the most signings and the most galley drops I wanted to check out.

My day once again started early because I wanted to ensure I made it to the Macmillan booth in time to secure one of these

Caraval was one of my top 'must gets' of BEA. I have been intrigued since the announcement was made and was thrilled it was going to be available in galley form at BEA. Meeting Stephanie Garber was a highlight of the conference. We've chatted over Twitter and she was just as kind as I expected her to be. I may have spent the rest of the day hugging this book because I was so thrilled to have it.

My other most anticipated title at BEA was Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco! I was able to go to her signing and she is just as lovely in person as you would expect from her Twitter. So sweet. This book not only sounds incredible but has real photographs included from the time period the novel is set. I've flipped through and some of the photos are unsettling. It makes me even more excited to read it.

The people at the Jimmy part of the Hachette/Little Brown booth were amazing and went out of their way to find me the bookmarks. There were not any on their swag table but when I asked they helpfully tracked some down in the back for me. They are fantastic and I was really happy to have managed to snag since I kept missing them whenever they were put out.

The only book from the ones I was interested in that I missed was Jay Asher's What Light. I was in line to get the new Disney Descendants novel for my niece and when I got to the galley drop they were all gone BUT there was some amazing swag left ...

HOT CHOCOLATE! I love it. I am hoping to snag this one at ALA 2016 and will keep this hot chocolate to drink while reading the book. It was really clever since this seems like the perfect read for the Christmas season and what goes better with the winter season than hot chocolate?

I stopped by the Simon and Schuster booth. They had two amazing adverts for upcoming celebrity 'memoir' type books that immediately caught my eye.

I am especially excited about Anna Kendrick's novel. The advert for Amy Schumer's was buzzy and attracted a lot of attention though. Sadly, while the adult imprints of S & S seemed to have a lot going on, I didn't see much as the young adult end of the spectrum. The buzziest title was The Diabolic (which does sound great) but I didn't see much buzz other than that particular title. I spent a little bit of time chatting with them about The Diabolic and some of their titles which was great.

The books I got on my third are some of the titles I am looking forward to reading first (as soon as I can fit one in my schedule). There are some pretty exciting titles that I was fortunate enough to get copies of.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber (goodreads)
Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco (goodreads)
Blood For Blood by Ryan Graudin (goodreads)
The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon (goodreads)
The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles (goodreads)
The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid (goodreads)
Gemina by Amiee Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (goodreads)

The wait for Gemina was EXACTLY what you would expect and they only had the one change to obtain a copy. I waited for just over 2 hours and am really looking forward to reading it. Jay Kristoff came to check out the line up for the galley drop and was promptly treated like a rock star. There was plenty of screaming and excitement to be had.

We ended the day with some delicious desert ...

and great company! It was lovely to meet Jennifer Park, Laurie Devore, and J.C. Davis. All three ladies are hilarious, and you should check out their upcoming 2017 releases!

This night was so much fun and the perfect way to end BEA before I headed home the next day. My time in Chicago was way too short and I did not get to see half as much as I wanted to (but there is always next time).

Book Expo America this year, for me, was an over all success. Holding it in Chicago was certainly a nice change of pace but I am excited to get back to New York where you really feel the pulse of the book industry all around. I loved being part of a such a large group of book fans who were excited to be there. There was random singing of Hamilton songs while in line, authors are treated as pop idols, and everyone is incredibly friendly while waiting in line. It's an experience not be missed and I cannot wait for next year.

Will you be headed to BEA 2017 in New York City? Let me know in the comments!

Book Expo America 2016 - Day Two

Day two was slightly more busy for me (but not as crazy as day three) but with the larger space, and less people it still felt very manageable. It was an early start for me because I wanted to score one of these ...

I was super excited to meet Leigh again and get a glimpse of Crooked Kingdom. Leigh was, as always, wonderful. My favourite part was when Leigh asked who my favourite character was from this series. I answered Kaz with a definate emphasis on his name. She and the publicist assisting at her signing both laughed and said that everyone who answered Kaz put some kind of emphasis on his name. We joked a little about it and it was a really fun highlight for me.

While browsing the floor this totally flail worthy thing happened ...

As I was lucky enough to have read Heartless already I was thrilled to get to fangirl over it with her in person and express my utter love for Jest (who is, without question, the most swooniest of Marrisa's book boyfriends). She is lovely and seemed so thrilled I loved the book so much. This was,  hands down, one of my top moments of BEA. I am a huge fan and it was surreal to get a few minutes to tell her how much I loved something she created.

This was also the day of the big cover reveal for Sarah J Maas' Empire of Storms at the Bloomsbury booth. It was incredible to see people come out in such large numbers for a cover reveal. There were a lot of us and we got to record a group hello for Sarah who couldn't be there. This is totally my favourite of her covers.

I mean. Look at how pretty that is. How bad ass does Aelin look with her sword and fire and that fierce look in her eyes? I cannot wait to put this pretty on my bookshelf.

It was a little busier today so I had less time to talk to the publishers but I did get to chat with the lovely people at Bloomsbury about Danielle Paige's Stealing Snow. After talking about it with them I am even more excited to get to read it. It sounds incredible. I hear that it was quite the popular book to get at BEA as well. The galleys at the galley giveaway apparently went VERY quickly.

Day two was an incredible success. I got some amazing swag (the tote was won at the Sarah J Maas raffle and the tattoos came inside the chapter sampler for Crooked Kingdom)

I also some books I am really excited to promote on the blog and hopefully will get to read very soon. I was so excited to get my hands on the sequel to Dash and Lily's Book of Dares! Such a cute Christmas-y type book and The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily seems poised to be just as cute.

History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera (goodreads)
Seven Days Of You by Cecilia Vinesse (goodreads)
The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn (goodreads)
The Secret Diary of Lydia Bennet by Natasha Farrant (goodreads)
Holding Up The Universe by Jennifer Niven (goodreads)
The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia (goodreads)
Leave Me by Gayle Forman (goodreads)
Frostblood by Elly Blake (goodreads)

After an amazing day at BEA it was time to get pizza! I couldn't leave Chicago without getting deep dish pizza and it did not disappoint. It was delicious and we had a lot of fun that night!

I forgot to mention that my roommate at BEA, Dawn, also provided me with a copy of her next book the first night she arrived (which was after day one). I, for some reason, decided to include it in day two haul. I loved her first book (Anne and Henry) and am so excited to devour Overdrive!

Overdrive by Dawn Ius (goodreads)

She also surprised me with the fact that I am in the acknowledgements. I was incredibly touched and want to say thank you to her again! It's been great to gain another amazing friend out of this and I am so thankful to have met her. (Side note - if you like fast cars, sexy romance, and Las Vegas this needs to be on your TBR list immediately).

I, also, apparently forgot to include a picture of my pass within my first day recap. They mistakenly put me as 'retailer' when they registered me. It proved quite interesting while on the exhibit hall floor.

Be sure to stop by tomorrow for the recap of my final days at BEA (and final thoughts on BEA in general)! If you were there let me know in the comments. If you weren't there - which author would you have liked to say hello to?

Headed to BEA!

It is BEA time again and I will soon be Chicago bound to, once again, be part of all the bookish fun.

This will be my first time visiting Chicago and I am pretty excited to see a new city (as much as I love NYC).  I am also really excited about seeing some bloggers, friends, and some of my favourite authors. I am already super excited about some of the signings going on during the event.

A few books that I am really excited about (hopefully) being there are

- Caraval by Stephanie Garber
- Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
- The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee
- The Female Of The Species by Mindy McGinnis
- Glitter by Aprilynne Pike

If you see me around the showroom floor, please do say hi. I am awkward and shy at first, but do genuinely love meeting new book friends. My favourite part of attending BEA is getting to see people I would otherwise not be able to meet so I hope to get to say hello to as many of you as possible.

The blog will operate as (mostly) normal while I am gone with some reviews and such going up. There may be a little disruption, but it should be minimal so I hope you'll continue to visit while I am gone.

I will be sharing things from BEA via Twitter and my Instagram if you want to see what I am up to while in the windy city!

Will you be attending BEA? Do you have any tips on what to do, see and eat in Chicago? Let me know in the comments.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOK

Cover for Sarah J Maas' A Court Of Mist and Fury (goodreads)

I've been excited to see the cover for A Court of Mist and Fury since finishing A Court of Thorns and Roses. That book was one of my favourites of 2015 and I am VERY excited to get my hands on this sequel.

My eyes are immediately drawn to the tattoo on Feyre's hand. Those who read the first book will know the significance of those markings and what it means for Feyre in this sequel. I am really excited to see the expansion of this world, and that little glimpse of (what I assume is) the Night Court has me really excited.

TV/MOVIE

Penny Dreadful Season 3 Trailer

It's no secret that I love Penny Dreadful. It's one of my favourite shows. The acting is some of the best on television right now, and the storyline is consistently sharp and mesmerizing.

This trailer has me on edge waiting for May 1st when it premieres. This trailer also gives me plenty of #Ethanessa feelings. The whole "you seek my soul,  you my body but both are promised to another" feels like she would mean Ethan (at least for me). He would be the 'other' that she refers to ... at least I hope. The end gave me chills with Vanessa stating "you think you know evil". This season cannot come fast enough.

The Path Trailer

Aaron Paul is one of my favourite actors. He was incredible as Jesse in Breaking Bad. Now, he and Hugh Dancy (who is also insanely talented) have been cast in a Hulu show about being inside a religious cult. This goosebumps inducing trailer has my full attention.

Hugh Dancy's delivery of the end line about them letting him lead them into the light is the perfect note to end it on. It gave me shivers and sets an unsettling tone for the series. I'll definitely be watching this. Those in Canada will be happy to know that Shomi has secured rights, but there is no word yet on when they may air the series.

OTHER

ALA 2016

I am going to Orlando to join my fellow book nerds at ALA. Registration opens this week and I am so excited to be registered. After registering all I have left to do is secure my transfers to and from the airport and work out a schedule for the days I'll be going to Disney (or Universal Studios). I am so excited to meet up with Kelly (from Kellyvision) and to see what authors might be there. I am also insanely excited for BEA 2016 in Chicago (which I am already registered for).

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

A small Weekly Obsessions post this week due to the holiday season!

TV/MOVIE

Tris and Four Allegiant Posters

I could not stop starring at these when they were released. There is something really eye catching and arresting about these posters.

They scream Tris and Four to me, and I love that the marketing department went this route. I am excited to see what else they might release.

OTHER

2016

I am so excited for the new year. It's a fresh start and I cannot wait to see what awaits for me in 2016! I hope it's filled with amazing books, amazing memories, and some new experiences. I have made a promise to myself that this would be the year I say yes more and push myself out my comfort zone so I am excited to see where that takes me.

What are you obsessed with this week?
