Here is the Goodreads synopsis
A big-hearted romantic comedy in which First Son Alex falls in love with Prince Henry of Wales after an incident of international proportions forces them to pretend to be best friends...

First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.

The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.

As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?
This is one of those books that I fell so completely in love with that words will not be enough. Red, White and Royal Blue will easily make my list of best books I read in 2019. It's the kind of book that works its way into your heart and leaves a lasting impression. It is one of those rare occurrences where a premise that dazzled me was executed to perfection.

This book a salve for those of us who were weary and broken after the 2016 election. It offers up a very bittersweet ‘what if’ but also manages to bring such joy. A female president may be something that only exists in fiction but this, somehow, makes the reader hopeful for it to one day happen in reality. It also paints a portrait of a powerful woman who can be there for her family and run the country. It is not that this should be a shocking idea, but the way that Casey crafts President Claremont circumvents some of the expectations I anticipate people are going to have. She could have been a very different character, as we see elsewhere, but I am glad she wasn't.

We get to know Henry mostly via Alex’s perspective as the story mostly exists through him. We also get to know both of them through the achingly romantic email exchanges that they exchange. The emails are the stuff of romantic legend. The kind of thing hopeless romantics dream of receiving. They, much like the relationship between the characters themselves, are a mix of humour, banter, and  emotion with just the right amount of sexual tension.  I found myself swooning one minute, giddy the next, and delirious from the amount of emotion showcased in this correspondence. The little details make all the difference and Casey McQuinston obviously gets this. The inclusion of quotes from various famous writers not only revealed a lot about the characters but their feelings in a simple, yet clever, way.

The romance is much more complex and complicated than I was expecting. This shouldn't have surprised me, but it did. I anticipated reading more of a fluffy rom-com. A book where Henry and Alex falling in love would not have ignited any backlash  just some tabloid fodder. Instead, this book is very much grounded in our reality. It's a poignant look at what falling in love in the spotlight would look like for the First Son and Prince of England. It is messy and real but always tinged with hope.

Both Alex and Henry have baggage that they need to deal with. It is baggage that relates to their romance, but would have surfaced at some point regardless. Having a story for your main characters that is separate from the romance always makes the story richer and this story is made all the better because of the detail given to building up the characters. It really is the characters who make you fall in love with this story because you wholeheartedly root for them. The obstacles they face are ones that feel organic and real that this, at time, feels like it could have been inspired by real events.

The relationships outside of the core romance are just as important to the story. The family bonds and friendships showcased add nuance and texture to the story just as well as the romance does. These other relationships add layers to the main romance and flesh out the book in important ways. I loved the dynamic and friendships that exists between Alex's group and Henry's group. They're the cool kids you want to hang out with. A group whose lives come with certain expectations that make them cling to the people who understand what that is like. Their love for one another is evident as we see them be there for each other time and time again.

I can only hope this novel finds the readers who need it. It might inspire them to, like Henry and Alex, make some history of their own. Casey McQuiston became a must read author for me after this knock out of a debut. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I expect you'll love Alex and Henry's love story as much as I did.

2019 Most Anticipated - Red, White and Royal Blue

The next book in my 2019 Most Anticipated event is one that offers up a romance between the son of the President of the United States and the Prince of England. Casey McQuiston's Red, White and Royal Blue is pretty much the rom-com I have been waiting for!

This book, as per the synopsis, includes a female president. I am entirely sold just based on that alone, but throw in the adorable sounding romance and I instantly needed this book.

The Goodreads synopsis for this novel will make you immediately want to go add it to your 'to be read' list!

And, most importantly, how will history remember you?
Amazing right? I am also looking forward to the inevitable Netflix movie that gets adapted from this book.

Casey took the some time to answer a few questions about her book and let us know what inspired her to write it, and what ice cream she would make in honour of Red, White and Royal Blue.

1 What gif do you feel represents Red, White and Royal Blue?

Oh, that's hard! But I'd say this one from Friday Night Lights:

2 If someone were to make a signature ice cream in honour of your book, what might be included?

A mix of earl grey (for Henry) and cinnamon sugar (for Alex) with a swirl of cajeta.

3 What inspired you to write a romance between the son of the United States President and the Prince of Wales?

In early 2016, I was following the presidential campaign super closely (weren't we all?) while simultaneously reading Carl Bernstein's Hillary Clinton biography and THE ROYAL WE. These things had left me with the desire to write two characters: a rebellious, Kennedy-esque, ambitious First Kid, and a quiet, misunderstood Prince Charming. I was literally driving to work one day when suddenly I realized—I could make them fall in love with each other and do it all in one story! I loved the idea of a royal romance that is on level footing in terms of fame and political power, and I really wanted to write something that captures what I love about Parks & Rec and Veep. So here we are!

4 Name a song you listed to for inspiration while writing this novel

"Texas Reznikoff" by Mitski. My protag, Alex, is from Austin, Texas, so this one came up a lot when I was drafting to help me get into his headspace. Like, so much so that I thanked it in the acknowledgements.

5 If you could travel to anywhere, in any time period, when and where would you want travel?

Would it be silly to say I'd go back to 2015? So many other time periods seem nice aesthetically but in practice would be a nightmare. But I'd love to go back to the comfort of an Obama administration for a day. Maybe the day of the Obergefell ruling, even? Rainbow White House or bust.

6 What 2019 release are you most anticipating?

So many! Tons of my friends and incredibly talented authors have books coming out in 2019 so it's hard to pick just one, but Hafsah Faizal's WE HUNT THE FLAME is definitely up there.

7 If not too spoilery, can you share the first line of Red, White and Royal Blue

Here's the first line!

On the White House roof, tucked into a corner of the Promenade, there’s a bit of loose paneling
right on the edge of the Solarium. If you tap it just right, you can peel it back enough to find a
message etched underneath, with the tip of a key or maybe a stolen West Wing letter opener.

I am very excited about everything to do with this book. A little heads up that this one is not Young Adult and will be in the romance section for those looking for it (and I believe there will be a lot of cross over appeal).

Red, White and Royal Blue releases June 4, 2019 but you can pre-order it right now from any retailer (or snag it with those holiday gift cards).

You can find out more about Casey by following her on Twitter, and by visiting her publisher website.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

As some of you may have heard Ottawa was hit by a tornado that knocked out power for a lot of the city. I myself was without power for 24 hours and there are still those waiting for their power to come back on. My heart goes out to those whose injured or had their property damaged during the storm. It was a scary few minutes and I wasn't even directly in its path.

BOOK

Cover of Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (goodreads)

I have been excited about this book since I read the deal announcement (and you can expect to see it pop up again a little later on this year) so I was excited to see the cover reveal. The cover is pure perfection. It fits the synopsis perfectly and is eye catching in a fun way.

How cute do the two main characters look? So excited to meet Alex and Henry!

TV/MOVIE

Captain Marvel Trailer

Captain Marvel is here! I love this trailer so much. This is Marvel's first female led movie and I am hoping it does really well. The trailer certainly set up a lot of excitement!

I love the "I'm not what you think I am" line. It got my pumped to see Carol defy expectations and just burn it all down. She is a badass and I cannot wait to see that on the big screen.

What are you obsessed with this week? Let me know in the comments.

I read the synopsis for this and knew immediately that I needed to read it. It mixes my love of books about royalty with a romance that sounds amazing.

Just read that synopsis and not fall in love with the idea of the book instantly. I am so excited to meet Alex and Henry!

The wait for this one is going to be long but entirely worth it I expect. You can expect the one to hit bookstores at the beginning of next summer (just in time for pool reading season).
Expected release date - June 4, 2019

BOOKS

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (goodreads)

This book was recently announced and I was immediately sold by the synopsis.
a joyous reimagining of 2019 in which the President of the United States is a woman and her son falls in love with the Prince of Wales. This is a romance of bacchanalian proportions.
What isn't there to love about this synopsis? It sounds like a fun, swoony read that has both a Prince and the son of the President. Let's also bask in the fact that it's a female President! I am all about this book and I cannot wait for it to be released.

TV/MOVIES

Cary Elwes Joins Stranger Things

Many news outlets reported recently that Cary Elwes is joining the cast of Stranger Things for the third season. He'll be playing the Mayor of Hawkins. As a fan of The Princess Bride this news makes me really happy. I am so glad that the third season will be filming soon!

You Official Trailer

I have not read the book that this series is based off (at least not yet) but I am very intrigued by the premise. The first trailer is pretty much what I expected which leads me to believe I'll be into this show.

Penn Badgley is perfectly creepy in this and it has only made me even more excited to finally pick up this book. One of my bookclubs has this as a pick for May so I'll be diving in soon!
