Here is the Goodreads synopsis
What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?
This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.
Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness within. It isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.
Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?
Temptation. Seduction. Sin. What if you couldn’t resist a particular sin? Even worse, what if you had to tempt others to commit that same sin? This is the premise behind Wendy Higgins debut novel.

The premise was what drew me into the story. It ended up being my favourite part of the novel. The whole idea that there are demons “in charge” of each sin and their children work for them by tempting others to commit that particular sin fascinated me. Their very lives depend on keeping their fathers happy, and this means working. Each of the children feels a pull towards their particular sin, and it becomes too great to resist.

While the plot appealed to me, and I found it to be an interesting premise, the characters were harder to relate to. I often got frustrated with Anna’s personality. The was no moderation with her character. Her father is the demon "in charge" of Drinking/Drugs. Anna feels the pull towards this particular vice and can’t have one sip of alcohol without wanting more. She is unable to enforce her limits. The push/pull of her angelic side, and demon side made it that she was steadfast in her convictions, but the minute she gave in and decided to “sin” she was like an addict. Kissing Kaidan, drinking, and other “sinful” behaviours were ones that tended to make her go overboard. I did like that she wanted to try and resist. The author does a fantastic job of showcasing the two different desires within Anna.

Kaidan literally is temptation. The son of the demon "in charge" of Lust, Kaidan’s purpose is to tempt others to give into their desires. This makes him overtly sexual, and he pushes Anna’s buttons immediately. I found myself disconnected from Kaidan because I feel I didn’t really get to know him that well. He even had a British accent, which tends to make me loose my cool. I felt like he spent more time being not very nice to Anna and I wanted to scream at her to like someone who was going to treat her better. I will give him credit for the nice things he did do and hope that we get to explore his motivations in the sequel.

The romance while very spicy and sexy was a little rushed. Anna was in love with Kaidan while barely knowing him. I have a huge problem with a guy telling a girl to stay away from him because he is dangerous and yet she chases after him anyways and this is exactly what Anna does. She finds reasons to seek him out and doesn’t listen when Kaidan is telling her to back off.  When they are together the connection is electric, and physical. I enjoyed the scorching chemistry and just wished it carried over to the non physical parts of their flirtation.

Wendy Higgins' demons are scary and were something else I really enjoyed. The climatic scene had me eagerly turning the pages to see what would happen. The demons in this tale are ruthless, punish for entertainment and expect nothing less than obedience.

While I had mixed feelings about Sweet Evil, I did enjoy it overall. It’s a highly readable, fast paced novel that has an intriguing premise behind it. I am curious to see where the story will go next as Anna’s fight between her angelic and demon sides is just heating up.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

Purchased

City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare (goodreads)
Storm by Brigid Kemmerer (goodreads)
Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins (goodreads)

Library stash

The Calling by Kelley Armstrong (goodreads)

I had a very busy week with books. This week was all about City of Lost Souls! I am so happy to have it in my hands. My review will be posted sometime this coming week (Thursday I expect).

Brodie who runs the amazing blog Eleusinian Mysteries has been RAVING about Storm for months. I could not find it in any store in Ottawa so I ordered it. It finally came in and I was thrilled to find out it came with the short novella that you're supposed to read prior to Storm. I hope to get to this one soon. I ordered Sweet Evil at the same time and it just came in Friday. I love the cover of this one so much! It looks amazing "in real life".

I loved The Gathering and am so excited to jump back into this story. Hopefully I have time to get to it soon.

Happy Sunday and Happy Reading!

Weekly Obsessions.....2 weeks worth edition!

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

So Many Book Trailers

Ok so there are a WHOLE bunch of book trailers I am obsessed with this week!

City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive for the trailer so I can't put the actual video in here yet.

You can view this insane and awesome trailer by going to this link -

http://shelf-life.ew.com/2012/04/18/cassandra-clare-city-of-lost-souls-trailer/

Sebastian sure is evil. Also very scary with the whole world burning and everything. Yikes. I am scared for Jace now.

Immortal City by Scott Speer

THIS TRAILER! GAH! So amazing. Scott Speer is a director and you can tell he used his talents to make this. The actor they got for Jackson Godspeed - SWOON! Totally hot and exactly how I pictured him. It's got the right balance of glitz and grit that they book has. If it doesn't make you want to read the book I am not sure what will.

Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

Sexy and a little gothic this trailer has made me want to get a copy of Sweet Evil immediately. I love the southern accent they use too!

The Immortal Rules trailer

I loved this first instalment of Julie Kagawa's new series. I think the trailer give you a good picture of how ravaged and destroyed everything is. Pick this one up for sure, it's a great read.

Amy Plum's new series news

Amy announced that she will be writing a two book series set in Alaska. The premise sounds amazing. Here is the official release details:
Author of the DIE FOR ME trilogy, Amy Plum’s JUNEAU, about a seventeen-year-old girl who has been raised to believe that her family, and the rest of their village, escaped World War III by moving to a remote area in the Alaskan wilderness – but when everyone in her village mysteriously disappears, she’s forced to set off in search of them, only to discover that her life has been a lie and there never was a third World War.
These will be released Summer 2014 and 2015 and I can't wait to get my hands on them.

MOVIES

Savages

As soon as Blake Lively's character says "Just because I am telling you this story doesn't mean I am alive at the end of it" I was hooked. It looks great and it's based on a best selling book. Part gangster, part sexy and part action means I am so there opening night!

OTHER

BEA Autograph Schedule

I may have hyperventilated and screamed at this year's BEA autograph schedule. Bethany Griffin, Veronica Roth, Stephanie Perkins, and Kat Zhang are just some of the authors signing at BEA. My Wednesday is going to be pretty packed and crazy. I am looking forward to meeting so many amazing authors and getting to spend time with fellow book lovers.

So what you are obsessed with this week?

Interview with Wendy Higgins

Today I am welcoming Wendy Higgins to the blog for a Q & A. Her novel, Sweet Evil, will be released by Harper Collins on May 1st. To learn more about Sweet Evil be sure to visit the Goodreads page. You can also follow Wendy on Twitter and visit her website.

Describe your book in 3 words

Sensual, dark, and tender

How would Anna describe Kai?

Sexy. Confusing. Tortured. Did I mention sexy?

What drew you to fallen angels?

Angel lore is fascinating to me, especially the idea that angels are capable of revolt. The whole “good vs. evil” thing captures me every time.

Is there anything unique or different about your angel mythology?

I think the big difference in my story is that I’ve chosen to use the traditional Biblical approach to angels, including mentions of God & Lucifer, which I realize might take some readers out of their comfort zone. I’m hoping people can keep in mind that it’s a work of fiction and appreciate the twist I’ve put on it.

Did you do any specific research for your novel?

I researched angel and demon names and what legends say about their power and purpose. I also had to research a lot for the cross-country trip, making certain I got the timing and locations correct.

What are your top three books about angels?

To be honest, I purposely shy away from angel books. I don’t want to be swayed by what is or isn’t in them. I did read Unearthly after I’d finished drafting, and I really enjoyed it. I also recently adored The Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

7 If you listen to music while writing, is there a particular song that describes Sweet Evil?

Oh, man, I’ve got a whole playlist! I think my marketers *might* be adding the playlist to the Amazon page. “My First Kiss” by 3OH3, Feat. Ke$ha is the fun road-trip song that comes to mind at the moment.

If you could go back in time to any time period and any place, where and when would you travel to?

Probably Elizabethan or Victorian England, when women wore elaborate dresses…although the corsets would get really old after awhile.

What has been the most surprising part of getting published?

Every single stage has surprised me. I’ve been surprised by what little control authors have in the process, and how long everything takes, lol. Thankfully I’ve learned to trust HarperTeen. I’ve also been surprised by how amazingly supportive the blogging and online community of readers has been. Love you guys! Thanks for having me!

Wendy's novel happens to have a super sexy cover and I have a few signed

bookmarks showcasing it. I am giving one away with the 2 prize packs being offered during the event, and I am also giving one away with this interview.

To enter simply leave a comment and I will select a winner on April 15.

In My Mailbox!

This is a weekly meme hosted by the awesome Kristi at The Story Siren. It gives us a chance to showcase the books we got during the week.

So this week was a little slower but due to the craziness of last week this was probably a good thing

I only have two books from the library this week

Bewitching by Alex Flinn (goodreads)
Fallen Angel by Heather Terrell (goodreads)

And I have some stunning bookmarks for Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins. Seriously, they are gorgeous and this picture barely does them justice. Thank you so much Wendy for sending them.

The bookmarks and Fallen Angel are for the angel event that will be happening on my blog in April. Super excited.

Happy reading everyone!
