Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every week.

BOOKS

Cover For A Certain Appeal by Vanessa King (goodreads)

I featured this book in my 2021 Most Anticipated event and now it finally has a cover. It's fun, flirty, and I love it. It fits the synopsis of the book perfectly.

This Pride and Prejudice set in the world of burlesque inspired novel will certainly look stunning on shelves.

Cover For Duke, Actually by Jenny Holiday (goodreads)

I love cute holiday season set romance so when a friend brought this book to my attention I immediately had to add it to my reading list.

This is such a cute illustrated cover! It has perfectly captured the holiday season in New York City vibe that this book has in the synopsis.

American Horror Story Season 10 Announcement

The official theme/title of American Horror Story's tenth season will be revealed the day this post goes up (Friday). Ryan Murphy broke the news on his social feeds recently.

Based on the clues I expect it will deal with mermaids or sirens of some kind. I know they have filmed a lot of the show in Provincetown so it'll fit with the water/coastal vibes all the teasers have had.

Promotion for Ryan Murphy's Hollywood kicks off

Netflix has started to release a lot more promotional material for Hollywood. The show debuts May 1st and wile we still do not have a trailer, we do have closer looks at some of the characters.

First up we have posters to highlight each of the main characters.

They put them all  in one photo, but each portrait was released separately. I love the classic look of them. it fits the time period.

Next we have short little clips of each character. I am including the two of the ones released so far. The others can be find on the official Twitter account of the show.

These are basically perfect. I love how everything fits with the time period from the costumes, to the music, to the 'feel' of both characters. I definitely know how I am spending May 1st.

It's The Pictures That Got Small podcast

Karina Longworh (host of the You Must Remember This podcast) and Nate DiMeo (host of The Memory Palace podcast) have a new podcast that they are creating together called It's The Pictures That Got Small.

It is a sort of movie club to help get us through this time of social distancing/quarantine. Each week they are having a friend of theirs pick a movie that the group has not yet seen so they can all discuss it after. Two episodes are available (Cast Away and From Here To Eternity) and they'll be watching The Grapes of Wrath for this upcoming episode (which have been dropping on Wednesdays). I am finding it immensely entertaining and have enjoyed following along so far. The podcast is available on both Spotify and Apple so far.

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every weekend.

I feel like TV is really the only thing getting announcements right now. Everything is kind of on hold while we practice social distancing for the foreseeable future.

Trailer for The Forgotten West Memphis Three

The West Memphis Three case is one of those cases that I wish was definitively solved. It's always angered me that this case was so badly handled and that the three victims never really got justice.

There is a new two night special event airing on the Oxygen network (which we cannot get in Canada) that I am hoping to eventually be able to check out.

I am curious to see what new leads might come out of this special. It seems like they are doing a lot of forensic testing so hopefully something comes from it.

The first episode actually aired yesterday on the Oxygen Network, with the second to air this evening. I think it is available to stream on the Oxygen app in the United States for those interested.

Defending Jacob Trailer

This immediately caught my attention because it has Chris Evans in it. It also happens to be based on a book which also tends to make me pay attention to something.

This looks really good, and I am glad Chris is taking so many different kinds of roles right now. It is going to help distance him from just being seen as Captain America.

This will be on Apple TV+ in April and I cannot wait to check it out.

I know this is late, but it is a holiday here for most of Canada so I decided to share it today instead. Happy Monday, everyone!

BOOKS

Cover of Crazy Stupid Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams (goodreads)

This cover is incredibly cute! I love the covers for this series and think this one just might be my favourite out of the bunch

I need to read this as soon as possible! I urge you to read the other books in the series if you haven't already done so.

*** DO NOT WATCH IF YOU DO NOT WANT INFORMATION ABOUT SEASON FOUR ***

The Stranger Things creators gave us a Valentine's Day present when they dropped this teaser for the fourth season of the show. The fact that they revealed the information contained in this video has me excited for a couple different reasons.

If you're okay with knowing some information about the fourth season check out the video below.

The fact that they are revealing this only makes me excited for what BIGGER reveals are to come. This felt like a huge thing to share so I expect that whatever they are holding back is going to be pretty exciting.

I am just glad we got this bit of information so that it doesn't have to be the focus of the upcoming marketing campaign for the show!

Best of 2019 - Everything Else Edition

Wrapping up my look back at 2019 with the best of everything else (ie: not books or movies). This means sharing the television and podcasts that made my year.

Television

1. Succession

This is absolutely my favourite new find of 2019. I didn't watch it when the first season aired so I got to binge it before season two premiered and I am obsessed. Everything about it from the acting, directing, writing, etc is phenomenal. It's not a show I thought I would love as much as I do, but it is incredibly addictive.

The entire cast stands out but some of my favourites are Jeremy Strong, who delivers 2019's best acting performance in season two, Kieran Culkin who is a delight as Roman. Sarah Snook who is incredible as Shiv (and has a wardrobe to match). Matthew Macfadyen who, as Tom, manages to steal so many scenes, and Nicholas Braun who kills it as fan favourite Cousin Greg.

2. Stranger Things Season 3

I anticipate that this show will be on every end of year list I do until it wraps up. The third season was absolutely everything I hoped it would be (and more). It gave fans exactly what they wanted by offering up more scenes between our favourite pairings, and managed to make a bigger, more action packed season feel just as emotionally satisfying as the others. Dacre Montgomery's portrayal of Billy this season gave me goosebumps, and I felt the emotional impact of his story arc in particular.

3. Mindhunter Season 2

This show managed to make a riveting season around what is basically, for many, still an unsolved case. There are so many questions that linger around the Atlanta Child Murders that I was curious about how they would address it when I discovered that was what this season was going to focus on. The answer to that question was to be as faithful as possible to factual events. This entire season worked for me, and Holt McCallany's Bill Tench was my MVP of this season.

4. The Good Place

I discovered this super late and actually binged watched the entire thing this year. I normally do not watch comedies and have enjoyed very few, so I was pleasantly surprised when I ended up loving this show. It's smart, and charming, and actually funny. I, of course, love all of the main characters and ship Eleanor and Chidi way more than I thought I would at the beginning.

1.  You Must Remember This podcast

If you're a fan of movies, golden age Hollywood, and well produced podcasts I highly recommend you check out You Must Remember This. The amount of research that writer/narrator Karina Longworth puts into each episode is evident and the guest voice actors are always amazing. It'll make you want to watch a ton of the movies that are featured, and will have you searching out some of the books used for the research.

2. The Murder Squad podcast

I am always looking for more true crime podcasts and this one, hosted by Paul Holes and Billy Jensen, is a little unique in that it is being used as a way to get information out there about the cases that are featured in the hopes that new information may be found. It helps channel citizen sleuths by providing avenues to explore and does so responsibly by providing some important rules to be followed. The banter between Paul and Billy make this entertaining as well as informative, and their 'Weekly Distraction' segment has quickly become my favourite.

3. My Favorite Murder podcast

This podcast was on my year end list previously, and I expect that it will be plenty more times, but it is still my go to podcast. I eagerly anticipate the new episode that gets released on Thursday and still find Karen and Georgia just as relatable, and inspiring as when I first started listening. I may have initially been drawn in by the true crime, but am happy to have also found fellow Murderinos to talk to, and the entire community that has sprung up around this podcast.

American Horror Story: 1984 - Final Girl

Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake Redwood. This season of American Horror Story takes a page from classic 80's slasher films and goes to summer camp.

Here is your official spoiler warning before we dive into the events of episode nine - Final Girl.

Here we are at the final episode of this season. We're about to say goodbye to Camp Redwood along with all of its inhabitants.

I am just excited that Finn Wittrock is in this episode! Pretty sure I've already guessed who he is playing.

The episode begins with someone pulling up to the camp. The car looks really modern. Turns out we're in 2019 and Finn Wittrock has taken an Uber to the campgrounds. The car can only go so far though because it's all overgrown. Finn's character says's he'll get out and walk and the guy offers a "be sure to give me 5 stars" as he pulls away.

We next catch up with Finn's character hiking through the grounds surrounding the camp. He comes across a bloody wood chipper and eventually the entry sign to the camp. He sees the run down stage from the concert and stops to snap some photos of things around him. It isn't long before he draws the attention of Montana though. She wants to know what he has in his hands. He tells her that it's his phone. She laughs and doesn't believe him. He questions how she doesn't know what a phone looks like. She asks him if she can see it and he hands it over. She's delighted.

Montana's a big fan of modern cell phones. She's adorably clueless on how to use it. He is confused/concerned the whole time. She asks what year it is and has her mind blown when he tells her it is 2019. He's the first person to show up at the camp in a LONG time. She muses that people stopped coming and now she understands why. She quickly tells him that he needs to leave because everyone he meets is likely to kill him. She asks if she can keep his phone which gets a very prompt 'no' from whoever Finn is playing. He tells her that he is not leaving until he gets some answers. He wants to know what happened to his father and the answers are at the camp. When Montana questions him he reveals that his name is Bobby Richter - aka the son of Jingles. Montana's eyes light up and she gets emotional and hugs him saying that he is Mr Jingles' son. I entirely called this because who else would care enough to go to this place in modern times? Also, Finn is around the right age to play a grown up Bobby Richter.

Montana, I guess, decides to give Bobby a tour because she takes him to one of the cabins. It turns out that Bobby has done his research though, and Montana looks super familiar to him because she looks exactly like Montana. Bobby is confused because it is not possible because Montana Duke died (and if she didn't she'd be in her 50's). He demands to know what is going on. She promises to tell him but he has to answer her questions first. She adorably rapid fires questions at him about what is going on out in the world. She wants to know what everyone thinks of the 80s, if aerobics is still popular, who the president is. Bobby explains that the 80s are having a bit of a resurgence. People are into the music and fashion but shares that aerobics are a bit of a joke now. This brings out Trevor who makes a quip about breaking into the camp just to break their hearts and kisses Montana. So, Trevor obviously died. Bobby, who is not dumb, recognizes Trevor immediately and his mind is so blown he has to sit down. Montana fills Trevor in on Bobby's parentage. Turns out that Bobby's Aunt told him the truth about his parents on her death bed. Oh, and someone has been sending Bobby money in the form of cheques. He thinks it is his dad and he wants to talk to him. Montana gently shares that Jingles is dead. Bobby wants to know all about his father. He cannot reconcile the guy from the video store with the vicious killer he has read so much about. Montana shares that dark forces took him away and that she hasn't seen him since. Trevor chimes in that none of the other ghosts have seen him. This catches Bobby's attention who thinks they are bullshitting him (which is fair). Montana and Trevor decide to prove it to him. They taunt him and tell him to go ahead and kill them, when Bobby refuses they kill themselves and come back a few seconds later (much to Bobby's surprise).

Bobby has a lot of questions (as would I) and that leads into a flashback of what happened at the infamous concert of 1989.

Margaret is freaking out because the talent was supposed to have arrived 45 mins ago. She wants to know what the hold up is and for the contracts they have signed to be enforced. Bruce is upset because he wanted to kill Debbie Gibson. Richard just wants what he was promised ...

He is going to be upset if Billy doesn't show up. Courtney rushes in and declares that he knows why nobody has arrived yet - Trevor. Trevor has created a road block and is turning everyone away from the camp when they arrive. Courtney hypothesizes it is because Trevor hates her and wants her to fail. That, and the fact that he told Trevor about what happened to Kajagoogoo. This causes Margaret to shoot Courtney and she tells Richard and Bruce to clean it up while she goes and deals with her husband.

Trevor is turning people away by telling them that the fire department shut them down when Margaret storms up in her car. They argue and she reminds him that he was fine with her using death to make money when it benefited him. He says that she is evil and he was corrupted by her but now he wants redemption. He's found love and that has shown him the error of his ways. He is going to bring in the authorities and plans to file for divorce. Margaret handles this the same way she handles everything else - by shooting Trevor. Trevor tells her that she won't get away with this. Margaret tells him that she will because he is outside Redwood grounds. This means that if he dies he won't be coming back. She shoots him again, this time in the penis. She storms away and Montana appears. She is hysterical and begging him to crawl to her. Trevor tries, but it doesn't look like he'll make it. Brooke comes walking up and helps Trevor up and brings him close enough to the campgrounds so that Montana can grab him. Montana questions why Brooke would help her and Brooke bitingly replies:

Brooke basically gave Montana eternity with the guy she loves so I say Brooke has grown. Montana tearfully tells Trevor he can die and he does but reappears right behind her and they embrace.

Back in 2019, Bobby's mind is understandably blown by all of this, and questions Brooke surviving death row. Brooke's kindness changed Montana forever. She decided to become a better person. The killing had to stop. They rounded up the rest of the ghosts and they all bonded as a community over their shared fate. They just had to take care of Margaret, Bruce, and Richard before they could have a happily ever after.

One of the ghosts of the counselors that Margaret killed is being chased by Bruce. He thinks she is still alive and is excited at the thought of getting his seventh solo kill. She trips and while Bruce is distracted Trevor comes out and attacks. He admires Bruce's mustache but he needs to ensure that Bruce dies off property so they kick him down a hill and away from the campgrounds.

Montana muses that killing Bruce was easy, it was Richard that was difficult. We are shown that she approaches Richard and flirts with him. She tries to get him to stay but he wants to go kill 'this kid in Alaska' but she grabs him and embraces him. She starts to move the flirtation into a more sexual territory but tells him that she knows a better place for them to hook up. She wants to take him to meet Billy Idol first. Billy is apparently a big fan of Richard's and wants to meet him. Richard calls her out for lying because he knows about the roadblock. She tells him that only a true rebel could have sang 'Rebel Yell' and Billy managed to sneak into the camp. Richard feels that this seems legit so he goes with her. There is, of course, no Billy Idol. It's a trap. All of the ghosts are there and they take turns attacking Richard. Montana gets to have her redemption moment and it is glorious. The entire scene is bloody and gross. As Richard lays dying he tells them that he'll be back. Montana says that she is counting on it as she slices his throat for good measure.

Bobby, smartly, questions why they didn't just make sure that Richard died outside the grounds rather than trap him inside with the rest of them. Montana says that since the devil already brought him back the rules don't apply to Richard. If he was outside the camp he would just be brought back by Satan and if he was in the camp he'd be able to walk right out of the camp. They came up with the idea of a literal death watch - they each took turns waiting for him to come back and killing him again and again. Year after year. There is a bloody, over the top montage of all the creative ways they've killed Richard.  This montage also offers up the one fun Xavier scene of the finale:

He even revs the chainsaw first. Montana shares that they kept coming up with more painful ways to kill him because of all the pain he had inflicted on others. You see that Richard eventually is entirely over it.

They finally tell Bobby that they are doing it mainly to keep him alive. They tell him that Richard swore to kill him because of the feud he had with Jingles. Bobby thanks them. Montana is basically like "no biggie, but you have to leave". She doesn't want him to be killed on the grounds if Richard wakes up and gets free. Bobby refuses to leave though. He knows that there are ghosts so that means he can talk to his dad because his dad died on the grounds. Montana reminds him that nobody has seen him since the late 80's. Bobby just becomes more determined to find him.

Chet and Bertie are on Richard watch. Bertie gets flirty and starts to straight up proposition Chet. She wants to play strip Pictionary. She has seen Chet hook up with both men and woman so she knows he is up for anything. While Chet and Bertie are distracted, Richard wakes up and gets the jump on them. So, Richard is awake and walking around. This cannot mean anything good for Bobby.

Trevor is telling Bobby the harsh truth - even if he finds his father, Jingles is not exactly warm and fuzzy. Bobby still wants to try. Richard comes crashing in and tries to attack Bobby. Trevor holds him off while Montana gets Bobby to run out of the cabin before helping. Bobby runs straight into Ray who is pissed until he sees that Richard is back. Chet and Bertie run into help as Montana screams for Bobby to run (which he does). He, sadly, doesn't run fast enough. He is hit in the back with a knife that Richard threw. Richard finally catches up to him. Richard threatens to kill him to settle the debt Jingles owes to Satan. All of the ghosts come running up and attack Richard. Montana tells Bobby to leave and never come back. She also tells him to go to the asylum and ask for the medical director if he wants answers.

Bobby heads there next. He is a bloody, tired mess and it is the middle of the night so the staff is less than thrilled to see him. He asks to speak to the medical director and freaks out the secretary when he gets angry when she declines his request. The secretary promises to call the medical director but calls security instead. She is under the impression that he needs to be checked into the asylum. Bobby starts screaming that he needs to speak with the medical director about Benjamin Richter and this brings out .... Donna! She's older, still alive, and apparently the medical director now. She also doens't look like 30 years has passed. She agrees to sit with Bobby. She shares that Jingles was innocent and that Margaret planted all of the evidence. She muses that Margaret almost got away with it all until the night of the concert.

We flashback to the night of the concert. The ghosts, having taken care of both Bruce and Richard, are now ready to take care of Margaret. They all show up outside her cabin with torches and weapons. Margaret locks the door and starts loading her gun, but Donna is already in the cabin and attacks her. When Margaret gets the upper hand Brooke rushes in to help. Brooke is stabbed in their scuffle and Donna gets back up just in time to see this. Brooke is laying injured on the floor. Donna rushes to let in the ghosts and demands they take Margaret. They grab her and drag her out of the cabin. They take her to the wood chipper. Margaret says that if they kill her she'll just come back and be with them forever. They have a plan for that though. They are going to cut her into pieces and put those pieces into the wood chipper which will deposit them on the other side of the campground. Margaret croaks that there is a flaw in the plan ... she's still going to die on this side of the grounds. Montana reveals that the brain can live on for thirty seconds after decapitation and so they are just going to throw that in last.

Donna wishes that Brooke had been alive to see this happen. Does this mean that Donna is the final girl?! Bobby muses that Brooke was a patsy just like his father. Donna used to go visit the camp afte but it got hard for everyone seeing that she was able to age and change. She eventually stopped going. Bobby figures that this means that she sent the money and thanks her for her help. Donna is genuinely confused though and says that she never sent him anything. Bobby quickly realizes that this means someone else survived the events of Camp Redwood.

They drive to the bank that the money came from to stake out and see who shows up. Bobby thanks her again and Donna shares that she isn't just doing it for him. She obviously wants to know who survived as well. Someone shows up and it seems that Donna recognizes who it is. They follow the person home and it is, unsurprisingly, Brooke. Brooke greets them at the door with a 'what took you so long'. She also looks like she has barely aged. She claims it is from leaving her previous life behind ... well, that and being married to a dermatologist husband helps too. Donna is angry that Brooke didn't let her know she was alive. Brooke just needed a clean break, which I get. She had to move on. She apologizes and Donna reveals that all she wanted was to be part of Brooke's life.

Brooke survived because of Ray! He came back and found her on the floor. He helped her get outside the grounds because he felt she deserved better than to die there and she ended up getting help. I am not sure this makes up for Ray being a complete asshat the rest of the time. Brooke proves what a bad ass she is by walking out of the grounds on her own. Once she was healed enough she took off as quickly as she could.

Bobby just wants to know why Brooke sent him the money. Brooke did it for reasons that were not entirely unselfish. She wanted to believe that a life away from the camp was possible. She wanted to give Bobby a chance because she needed the hope for herself. She apologizes to Donna again and express the hope that Donna could forgive her. Donna tells her that they are bonded for life. I love their friendship so much. They share a smile and Brooke states that they are both the final girl which is AMAZING.

Bobby and Donna are saying goodbye. Donna wants to buy him lunch but Bobby needs to go back to the camp. He felt something protecting him and he thinks it was his dad. Bobby, please do not go back to the camp. Think of your pretty face.

We cut to Bobby back at the camp. He is at the lake where Jingles was last seen. Margaret shows up! I knew it was too much to hope that their plan worked and she didn't come back. Ugh. Bobby recognizes her immediately and he is pissed. He accuses her of framing his father. She realizes he is Jingles' son and she perks up. She offers to take him to his father and claims that she is able to find him because of their connection. Bobby declines and says that he doesn't trust her. She basically just shrugs and says she doesn't care if he sees his dad or not. Bobby is making all of the bad decisions and decides to follow her. Bobby questions how she can still be there when the ghosts went through great lengths to keep her from coming back. She reveals that she died just seconds before being spit out of the wood chipper. She basically has been in hiding and waiting this whole time so that she could kill him. She goes to attack Bobby but Jingles shows up and stops her. There is a very touching reunion between father and son.

It is a beautiful moment. Jingles asks why Bobby came back to the camp. He doesn't feel like he was a parent to him. Bobby tells him that he is wrong. He did what all good parents do - sacrifice for their child. Bobby says that he came back to thank him. Jingles says that Bobby was worth it. He wants Bobby to run away and forget this place and just live. He tells him that he loves him right before Margaret comes from behind and kills him. Bobby is shocked. Margaret screams that she is always the final girl and goes to attack Bobby who runs away .. and right into his grandmother. The lady in white demands that Margaret leave her grandson alone. Margaret, unsurprisingly, doesn't listen and so Lavinia kills her.

She turns to Bobby and is a way better grandmother than a mother. She's soft, and gentle with him and in awe of how handsome he is.

She muses that he looks just like her Bobby would have if he had been able to grow up. The rest of the ghosts show up and Lavinia tells them to take Margaret away.

Montana approaches Bobby and tells him to leave and never come back. She wants him to not forget them though. She urges him to tell their ghost stories to his children so they can live on forever.

This is both sad and beautiful and tragic. Ugh. I don't understand how Ryan Murphy keeps making me cry over these horrible people. She urges him to go and Bobby takes off running out of the camp.  He runs until he reaches the sign (looking over his shoulder the entire way). When he is outside the camp he pauses to catch his breath and feels someone watching him so he turns to look behind him to see his family at the gate. It's beautiful and I am crying as the music swells. One last smile between them and Bobby walks away from the camp ... and doesn't look back.

Other Bobby waiving KILLED me. *clutches heart*.

The ending was emotional in so many ways. It gave the kind of happy endings I have come to expect from some of these seasons. Very bittersweet but cathartic in their own way. They are also endings that are better than some of the characters often deserve, but somehow feel earned by the end. I thought it was a fantastic wrap up and a beautiful way to say goodbye to the 80s.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOKS

The Beautiful Pre-Order Campaign

Penguin Teen just announced the pre-order campaign for Renee Ahdieh's The Beautiful and it is amazing!

This enamel pin is a must get for me. I cannot wait to devour this book and I am fairly certain I am going to be obsessed.

TV/MOVIES

The Witcher Trailer

I don't know much about this other than it originally was a book that got adapted into a video game and is now going to be a Netflix series.

I've heard that it is a serious contender for the next big thing that could take the place of Game of Thrones now that it has ended.

The first trailer definitely hooked me. Excited to learn when we'll be able to watch the first season.

His Dark Materials Trailer

I haven't read this book series (I know, I know) but I had seen the original movie that was released at one point or another. I am pretty sure everyone agreed it was not a great adaptation of the book series.

HBO is releasing a series this fall and released a trailer at San Diego Comic Con. A television show seems to make much more sense for a series that expansive and complex. The trailer certainly seems to indicate it was a better choice.

The CGI for the bear is incredible. I am excited to watch this in the fall and hopefully pick up the books eventually.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Just a small post this week. I have pretty much been busy watching Stranger Things and not much else is going on.

TV/MOVIES

Knives Out Trailer

I was intrigued by the casting in this movie and the fact that it was simply referred to as a 'classic whodunit'. Not much was released about the plot until the first trailer was revealed.

This trailer is really fun. Chris Evans looks like he is having a blast with this role. I looks like a fun mystery that, I think, will play well around USA Thanksgiving.

Stranger Things Season 3

I ended up watching the entirety of the third season in one day. It is, perhaps, the best season to date and filled with so many emotional moments. I don't want to give any spoilers, but I (mostly) loved all of the new characters. I will probably end up watching it at least once more and already cannot wait for season four.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

A lot was revealed this week so this post may end up being a little longer than usual!

BOOKS

Cover For Harley In The Sky by Akemi Dawn Bowman (goodreads)

This caught my attention first with the synopsis. Novels set in a circus of some kind are always intriguing to me. The cover was just recently revealed and I think it's perfect.

The colour scheme really works for me and the view of the reader looking up is striking. The circus tent and shadow work together to give you a sense of what the story is going to be. It's made me even more excited to read it.

Down Comes The Night by Allison Saft (goodreads)

I saw the deal announcement for this book and could not add it to my Goodreads fast enough. It sounds absolutely incredible.
a gothic romance set in a Guillermo del Toro-esque world. The book is about a healer torn between duty and her heart, a soldier broken by his crimes, and the darkness that threatens to consume them.
A gothic romance is exactly what I want to read and I cannot wait to see the world building in this book. This is going to be one of the books I cannot wait to get my hands on in 2021!

TV/MOVIES

Trailer For Carnival Row

Remember how things set in a circus like setting caught my attention? This trailer was also released this week and I am in!

The fantasy mixed with steampunk setting. The forbidden love aspect mixed with the murder mystery (both of which I got from reading more about the show) have only made me more intrigued. Excited to check this one out when it releases on Amazon on August 30th.

Trailer For Ford v Ferrari

I had heard that there was some potential Oscar buzz for this movie and that the studio moved it from its original summer time slot to a more awards season favourable fall one.

The trailer was just released and I think the talk could hold some weight.

Christian Bale looks great, and it certainly looks capable of picking up a few tech nominations. Not sure it is Best Picture worthy but the trailer is promising at least.

Poster For Carnival Row

Along with the above trailer Amazon also released key art for Carnival Row. It leans into the fantasy steampunk vibe the trailer had going on.

This image alone would have made me check out the first episode. I am intrigued and hope it is as good as I am picturing it being.

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Happy Easter, everyone. It's a short post today because not too much has been revealed.

TV/MOVIE

When They See Us Trailer

When They See Us is just one of the true crime based movies hitting Netflix in May. A trailer was just released and if you devour anything true crime related the same way I do this will become a must watch for you after seeing this trailer.

It is based on the Central Park Five and it is a enraging and gripping story. Ava Duvernay seems to have done incredible work here.

OTHER

Book Expo Autographing Sneak Peek

I am going to Book Expo again this year and they recently released a sneak peek at the authors who will be in attendance. The list is pretty incredible with me especially looking forward to Renée Ahdieh, Leigh Bardugo, Jasmine Guillory, Brigid Kemmerer, Kim Liggett, Kerri Maniscalco, and Rainbow Rowell. It is already looking like it is going to be filled with amazing authors and I cannot wait for the full schedule.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

TV/MOVIE

The Lion King Trailer

I thought Baby Simba was adorable when we get our first glimpse of him in the teaser trailer that was released a little while back.

The full length trailer is here and it looks even more incredible.

Visually it is stunning. I am hoping we see a little more personality from the CGI animals in the actual movie, but otherwise I am really excited about this one.

Lucifer Season Four Promo

This promo is little more than some great Tom Ellis eye candy and a release date but it is effective nonetheless.

The little head tilt he does makes me giggle every single time. I cannot wait for this show to come back!

Veronica Mars Trailer

I love Veronica Mars which is why it pains me that the revival is on Hulu. We here in Canada do not have access to Hulu and I am desperate for any way that I will be able to watch it.

This trailer is so much fun. It captures who Veronica is and sets up the tone of the next season. I cannot wait to return to Neptune and hopefully I will get to do it soon.

OTHER

Entertainment Weekly's Avengers: Endgame covers

All of the main Avengers (the original squad if you will) are highlighted in this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly. They each get their own covers, and naturally I love Chris Evans/Captain America's the best.

The Bucky and Steve reference on the cover is the best and I appreciate that everyone got their time to shine.

Cameron Monaghan and Noel Fisher Return To Shameless

Many media outlets are reporting that Noel Fisher will be joining Cameron Monaghan when he returns to Shamless next season! I am so happy. After the AMAZING reunion they shared I hoped that the writers would not break them up when Cameron decided to return. Excited to have one of my favourite ships back on television.

Taylor Swift Countdown

New Taylor Swift music is upon us! She recently started a countdown on her official website that is counting down to April 26th and some kind of annoucement/release.

Many are predicting a new single and album release details as part of this annoucement. Based on the aesthetic it appears that this album will have a very different vibe from Reputation. Bring on the sparkles, cotton candy colour scheme, and summer vibes. I hope for a fun album with a lot of great light and flirty love songs.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

We're a little bit into 2019! Hope the new year has been treating everyone well.

I have a few fun things to share this week. Super excited about these new shows that are coming our way (hopefully) soon.

MOVIE / TELEVISION

Sarah Michelle Gellar Return To Television

Deadline reports that Sarah Michelle Gellar will star in the limited series Sometimes I Lie. It's adapted from the book by Alice Feeney. It sounds like a twisty thriller and I cannot not wait to read the book and see this show! I have always been a huge fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar's work and I cannot wait to see her in this.

Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse Comes To Netflix

Deadline also reports that Netflix has ordered a series based on the Shadow and Bone/Six of Crows novels by Leigh Bardugo. I loved these books and I think there is so much potential for a really good series to made from them.

What I Am Excited For In 2019

We are a week into 2019 and I figured now would be an excellent time to showcase the things in pop culture that I am most looking forward to this year. I am not going to discuss books because I had an entire event dedicated to showcasing some of the titles I am excited for in year to come. Today's post will focus on movies, television shows, and podcasts that I am looking forward to entertaining me this year.

PODCASTS

The podcast section will most likely be the shortest but there are a few things I am excited about. It is hard to predict what will be the next big thing and may podcasts do not announce themselves months in advance the way movies and television shows do.

1. Exactly Right

The podcast network started by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark (aka the amazing ladies behind My Favorite Murder) has definitely got my attention. They launched late 2018 with some pre-established shows and are going to expand this year with some that they helped create specifically for the network. The exciting part for me? These have all been chosen with fans of My Favorite Murder in mind! I am fairly certain that one of these podcasts will quickly become a new obsession for me (and I have a feeling that Paul Holes may end up being the host of one of them).

2. Disgraceland Season 3

This is easily one of my favourite podcasts and I am so excited for it to return from hiatus in February. I cannot wait to see what musicians he features and what episodes will end up being my favourites.

TELEVISION

I could, again, list a bunch of television shows I am looking forward to in 2019, but I am going to keep this to my top five.

1. Stranger Things Season 3

It is probably no surprise that this made my list. It is the show I am most looking forward to in 2019! I gushed already about great the poster is and am (im)patiently waiting for a trailer!

2. I Am The Night

Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine once again team up for this limited series that seems to revolve around The Black Daliha.

The trailer is really gripping so I hope the show is as good as I think it is going to be.

3. Game Of Thrones (Final Season)

It's all been leading up to this final season! We're finally going to know who will sit on the Iron Throne at the end of it all. Winter is here!

4. Mindhunter Season 2

The second season is rumoured to feature both Ted Bundy and Charles Manson as Holden Ford and Bill Tench continue to interview serial killers and help solve cases. The Atlanta Child Killings are supposed to have a large focus and I expect that we'll have Cameron Britton's Ed Kemper show up again.

5. Fosse/Verdon

I saw this trailer during the Golden Globes and immediately wanted to watch this show. Both Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell are great actors and this looks like a potential Emmy contender.

I love the way this trailer bounces from the obvious more dramatic elements, but also has the flair and fun of the dancing.
MOVIES

There are way too many movies on my list for 2019. Instead of listing every single one I figured I would keep it to a maximum of 10. As more and more movies are announced I am certain there will be some that end up my favourites that are not even on my radar this early in the year. The list is in no particular order other than by release month as it was easier.

I am also going to keep all of the Disney and Marvel movies off this list. It goes without saying that I am excited for them and it gives me a chance to spotlight other titles instead of a whole list featuring them.

1. Us (March 15th)

Anyone who has seen Get Out knows exactly why Jordan Peele's newest movie would be on this list!

The trailer is creepy and I am so intrigued by the entire premise! There is a lot of potential with the 'we're our own worst enemy' vibe that this movie has.

2. Wounds (March 29th)

I was intrigued by this one the instant I heard it was a New Orleans set thriller.

No trailer yet so I'll share the description provided on IMDB: Disturbing and mysterious things begin to happen to a bartender in New Orleans after he picks up a phone left behind at his bar.

3. Rocketman (May 31st)

This Elton John biopic seems to be offering a unique twist to the genre.

Taron Egerton looks great as Elton and I love the 'based on a true fantasy' tagline.

4. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (July 26th)

There has not been much released for this one yet but I've been cautiously optimistic about it since the movie was announced.  For those who may have missed what this one is about, here is the IMDB description.

A faded TV actor and his stunt double embark on an odyssey to make a name for themselves in the film industry during the Helter Skelter reign of terror in 1969 Los Angeles.

The true crime aspect of this movie was the hook, but I appreciate that the murders are going to be in the background. Plenty of movies have already been made about these crimes. It'll be interesting to see it from a different perspective.

5. The Goldfinch (October 11th)

This is based off the book by Donna Tartt and it seems to already be popping up on potential Oscar contenders lists. The IMDB page has this description:

A boy in New York is taken in by a wealthy Upper East Side family after his mother is killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

It also caught my eye because it has Sarah Paulson in it. I am looking forward to seeing a trailer (and reading the book this year hopefully).

6. Last Christmas (November 15th)

This sounds like a fun holiday movie with a very charming cast! It also happens to be named after the famous song.

There isn't a description or much known about the movie other than it is a holiday romance set in London. It stars Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding which is enough to get me to go see it.

7. Queen and Slim (November 27th - rumoured)

Again, not much is known about this movie. It has a rumoured release date of November 27th and I was intrigued by the fact it stars Daniel Kaluuya whom I have loved in everything I have seen him in.

The IMDB and release date sound like potential Oscar bait to me:

A couple's first date takes an unexpected turn when a police officer pulls them over.

8. Knives Out (November 27th)

This one sounds like it could be a lot of fun. It's described as a modern murder mystery in a classic whodunit style (as per IMDB) and stars Chris Evans, Toni Collette, and Michael Shannon (to name a few).

9. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (release date unknown)

Our first glimpse of Zac Efron as Ted Bundy was enough to get me excited for this movie.

This tells the story from the point of view of Ted's girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer, and her coming to terms with the fact he was a monster.

10. The Highwaymen (release date unknown)

I have always been fascinated by the story of Bonnie and Clyde. This movie seems to offer up a different point of view by focusing on the law enforcement who tried to apprehend them.

The description from IMDB reads:

A pair of police officers come out of retirement to catch the infamous outlaws Bonnie & Clyde.

There is, interestingly, no Bonnie or Clyde listed in the cast so we may not even see the infamous duo. This one has a rumoured release date of March 29th but I cannot find anything definitive.

What are you most looking forward to in 2019? Let me know in the comments! I am excited to add new books, shows, and movies to my list (and always love podcast recommendations) so I cannot wait to see what you're all excited about.

Best Of 2018 - Everything Else

Wrapping up my look back at 2018 with the best of everything else (ie: not books or movies) before looking forward to what I am excited for in 2019!

Television

American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace

This was, perhaps, my favourite season of television in 2018. Darren Criss' incredible performance as Andrew Cunanan, the show introduced us to the talented Cody Fern, gave us a fantastic Judith Light performance, reminded us that Finn Wittrock is incredibly talented, and it offered up a socially relevant message about the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community. It may have been quieter than the OJ Simpson season, but, I personally feel, the performances were event stronger.

Killing Eve

Two amazing performances from Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer. It's a cat-and-mouse style thriller that was also really fun to watch!

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

This fun, and darker, twist to the Sabrina Spellman story was a welcome one. The casting is pretty perfect (I especially love Ross Lynch's Harvey and Chance Perdomo's Ambrose) and the show has just enough humour to balance its darker plot.

Other

Disgraceland Podcast

I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts so it will come as no surprise that I immediately gravitated towards this podcast that is basically musicians behaving badly. Some of the episodes are very true crime based, others are just outrageous stories of performers at their worst. It's a fascinating, entertaining podcast whose host also happens to have an incredible voice and a talent for storytelling.

Little Gold Men Podcast

Vanity Fair's podcast focusing on the path to the Oscars has been a delight for me this year. Following them through this entire year from immediately after the last Oscars to this one has allowed me to follow the long and interesting path to get there in a way I never had before. It's a must listen for fans of movie award shows, but particularly if Oscars are your thing.

My Favorite Murder Podcast

This also made my list last year but Karen and Georgia continue to be my go to for podcasts. I also got to attend a live show in 2018 and it was one of my favourite moments of the year.

What television and podcasts from 2018 made your own best of lists? Let me know in the comments!

American Horror Story: Apocalypse - Traitor

The seventh episode of this season, title Traitor, brought lots of plot movement, plenty of fun witch stuff, the world's most awkward dinner, and got us even closer to the more current timeline.

With the usual reminder of spoilers lets break down what happened.

This week's cold open began to fill in Dinah's backstory prior to coming to the outpost. She took over as the voodoo queen after Marie Laveau died. We see her performing a bloody spell where she rips out some woman's heart. The heart, it turns out, is for spell that was bought and paid for by another woman. The dead woman had been having an affair with the other lady's husband and this was unacceptable. The spell was so that her cheating husband would keep his penis in his pants. The spell includes the heart, some herbs, spices, and other things including something from the wife herself. The wife provides some toenails which prompts Dinah to exclaim that she must really hate her husband. The wife mostly just hates his wandering penis so she even stops Dinah from adding strawberries to the mixture so that it 'goes down easier'. They force feed it to the woman's husband (which looks disgusting) and Dinah makes it so that he doesn't remember drinking it. She promises the woman that her husband will now be faithful because he will be incapable of getting hard for anyone but his wife.

Cordelia approaches Dinah outside the house and they bicker back and forth. Seems Dinah blames the witches for Marie's death while Cordelia hints that Dinah had the most to gain from it (she did become voodoo queen after all). Cordelia eventually admits she needs Dinah's help. She wants a meeting with Papa Legba (who those of you who watched Coven will remember). Dinah wants money, specifically $100,000.00 in cash, to make it happen. Papa Legba's 'help' always comes with a steep price so Cordelia must be desperate.

We're next introduced to Bubbles McGee (played by Joan Colins in her second role), another witch who happens to be an actress. We're introduced to her by a glimpse of her shooting a Christmas horror movie. It's bloody and ridiculous and so American Horror Story and has nothing at all to do with the actual plot. When the director yells 'cut' we learn that Bubbles is able to read people's minds when she overhears a set worker thinking how hot she still is for an older lady. We also see that Madison has come to collect her. Bubbles doesn't think much of Madison's acting (and even suggests she is the only witch who is also an actress which Madison takes great offence to). Madison cuts right to the point of her visit and says that Bubbles has been summoned because they need all hands on deck to help with the Michael situation.

There's a fun dinner scene where Myrtle and Bubbles are reconnecting since they are old friends from their school days at the witch academy. Much giggling over shared secrets and teasing the waiter who was thinking about what kind of underwear Bubbles was wearing. Madison is unimpressed by all of it and reminds them that they have a real problem on their hands because their next Supreme is the literal Antichrist. Myrtle points out that the warlocks are to blame as well since they are hellbent on clearing a path for Michael to take over. The real reason they got Bubbles becomes evident. They want her to read the minds of the warlocks, particularly Ariel, as they need to know what they are thinking. Bubbles is reluctant at first, even hinting that they are being dramatic by calling having a male Supreme the end of the world, but relents when Myrtle asks for it as a personal favor. Myrtle is going to have a dinner and will take care of everything. This should be fun!

Meanwhile, Cordelia gives the money to Dinah who calls forth Papa Legba. Dinah reminds her that Papa is not to be trifled with and that she shouldn't promise anything she cannot deliver. Papa shows up and wants to know if Dinah has reconsidered his offer. She declines again and says that she is not into snatching newborns (so she is declining the same deal that Marie and Fiona had with him). Dinah says she is only there because Cordelia paid her. Cordelia fills him in on what she wants. She wants him to open the gates to hell so that she can shove Michael in and trap him there. Seems like a great plan but Papa Legba wants a steep price to take part in something so dangerous. This is where Papa reveals he is not alone! He's brought Nan with him (who everyone remembers Fiona gave to Papa as part of a deal). Nan is doing great though and seems happy even though Cordelia is not happy about any of this (and even throws out a 'Fucking Fiona' for good measure).

Nan reveals that she likes hell. She likes causing trouble. Papa finally reveals that his price for helping to trap Michael is not just one soul, but the souls of all of the witches at the Academy. Nan begs Cordelia to accept. She wants to see her friends again as she misses them. Cordelia apologizes to Nan and says that she cannot accept. Papa immediately leaves after Cordelia declines. Dinah points out that now not only will Cordelia's 'girls' die but so will millions of other people.

Back at the Academy Mallory is asking the others about the new Supreme. She wants to know if he is nice (he's not, Mallory, but he is hot). Coco interrupts their Supreme discussion to show off a new power she just discovered. She can now look at food and tell how many calories are in it. The witches have fun testing Coco's powers. It's a rather light moment that quickly turns dark when Coco starts choking on a piece of food. Everyone freaks out instead of helping her and Coco passes out. Mallory jumps into action and removes the chunk of food by magically creating an incision in Coco's neck and taking it out which restores airflow. Coco is fine and Zoey is seriously impressed. There isn't even a spell for what Mallory just did. This also makes me even more convinced that Mallory is going to play a role in the reversing of the apocalypse. Her powers are strong and she seems capable of turning thing back and restoring things to what they once were. I will be very surprised if this is not how this season ends.

We next see Zoey run into Cordelia on the stairs. Cordelia is very weak. She gets Zoey to help her to her room. She reveals to Zoey that she is in no condition to fight Michael. Zoey mentions that she thinks Cordelia is fading because Mallory is the new Surpreme, not Michael. This makes sense and would be a much more welcome outcome but I really don't want to Cordelia to die.

Myrtle and Bubbles are hosting their dinner. They offer it up to Ariel and Baldwin as a way to apologize for their past behaviour (such as calling Ariel a pathetic pompous ass). Myrtle says she wants this dinner to be an example for both the covens and show that they can come together. Over some good food and a lot of wine, Myrtle and Bubbles discover that the warlocks are just as awful as I thought. Ariel thinks about how happy he is that John is nothing more than a pile of ash. They both think about how much they hate the witches and how they can't wait to kill all of them. Bubbles manages to remain neutral throughout dinner. It's rather jarring to see them laughing and having a good time when their thoughts are so full of hate. Bubbles reveals the truth to Myrtle as soon as the warlocks leave the table and they agree to tell Cordelia.

Mallory is upset that her rising means that Cordelia will have to fall. Cordelia tells her that it is okay and that it is the way that it works. She will be heartened to leave the coven in such capable hands. Behold is disgusted that they are drinking and having a good time when there is an Antichrist on the loose. Myrtle is quick to remind him that he helped in Michael's ascension. Cordelia  tells them that they will stop Michael but she wants to celebrate because it could be the last time they have a chance to. Cordelia reveals that she has known this was coming for some time. It made her break a vow she had made and bring Myrtle back. I am so glad we finally get to see how Cordelia brought Myrtle back! We last saw Myrtle being burned at the stake so I was curious. Two years prior to this is when Cordelia performed the spell to bring Myrtle back. It's a very cool looking spell as it appears like her hand is burning from the inside. Myrtle is sad that Cordelia broke her promise but softens when Cordelia breaks down crying and asks for guidance. Cordelia shares with the coven that she had to do everything she could to prepare them for what was coming. Now that they are all united and ready she wants to take the first shot and go on the offensive with the warlocks!

Part one of the plan is to bring back John! Zoey uses her powers to collect all of the dust that is his remains. Cordelia tells Mallory to bring him back. This also happens to be her last test for the Seven Wonders. It, of course, works. Welcome back, Chyenne Jackson. The witches reveal to John that his fellow warlocks conspired against him. He reveals that it was a woman who killed him. This means that part two of the plan is getting this woman.

Cordelia approaches Coco while she is trying to eat ice cream. Turns out that knowing how many calories are in something makes eating some things really hard. Cordelia wants Coco's help with her next plan and Coco agrees. It involves approaching and distracting Michael's caretaker so they can capture her. It works like a charm since the caretaker is too busy shooting Coco (with what turns out to be tranquilizer bullets) that she is easily taken.

Back at the warlock school Baldwin reveals a chemical powder that makes people bleed out of their pores. He also reveals that he has modified it so that it only impacts women. This is how they plan to take out the witch coven. Ariel muses that he wonders what the witches would say if they could see what they've done. Cordelia walks in and tells them that a lady witch already made this exact powder years ago so she would say it is plagiarism. All they've done is switch the genders around. The witch who first made it was burnt at the stake before she could use it which Myrtle thinks is a shame. Cordelia makes the powder disappear by setting it on fire. Ariel, who is annoyed, tells her that her powers have already waned. This makes Cordelia even more angry and she uses magic to seal the warlock's mouth shut. She taunts him with this great line:

It was great. I fist pumped. Cordelia is a queen. I am so happy to see the warlocks get what was coming to them.

The group of witches lead both Ariel, Baldwin, and Michael's caretaker to the place where they carry out the burning of guilty witches and warlocks. She tells them their crimes (killing John) and says that since it is against their laws for witch to start the fire that burns a warlock she'll let their fellow warlock have the honour and John swaggers on over in a great coat and hat. Seriously, Cheyenne Jackson looks so hot here. He gives them a little wave as he walks by. John grabs the rest of the gasoline and pours it all over the caretaker. John makes a little joke that made me laugh for far too long:

Cordelia never undid the spell that sealed their mouths closed which makes what happens next even more terrifying. Imagine being burned alive and not even being able to scream as it is happening.

The caretaker uses John's invitation for last words to spout off some stuff about Satan and being excited to join his kingdom. It's all unsettling and made even more so when she laughs. John is over it and magically lights the torches that will set the stakes on fire. Nobody screams and the caretaker burns with a demented smile on her face.

The episode ends with Cordelia and John leading the rest of the coven away from the fires and looking completely badass as they do it. The struts on Sarah Paulson and Cheyenne Jackson though!

See you next week where we get to see Michael's reaction to all of this which I predict will not be good. I am just excited for next week because this was a Michael less episode and I very much want Cody Fern back on my television screen.
