Best of 2016 ... Non Bookish

It feels like 2016 had been one year long suck fest, particularly towards the end. It is hard to remember that there were some good things about 2016. I listed the top books I read this year in a previous post, and now I am going to share the best of everything else - movies, TV, etc.

So here is what I loved in 2016

TELEVISION

Stranger Things

An incredible show that is filled with 80s nostalgia. It boasts a cast of adorable and talented kids, the return of Winona Ryder and was one of the biggest additions to pop culture this year.

If you haven't watched this I highly recommend you binge watch it immediately. You'll completely fall in love with the entire cast (but especially Eleven) and will be dying for them to release season two.

Lucifer

I was pleasantly surprised by this show. It is filled with charm, humour and wit. Tom Ellis plays a very charming and endearing Lucifer, but the rest of the cast shines equally as bright. Chloe and  Mazikeen in particular have really been given character development.

The ship in this show is on of my top ships right now. They are adorable together and they make each other better which I love. Binge this if you haven't because it will definitely surprise you.

Mr Robot Season 2

People had mixed feelings about the second season Mr Robot. I, personally, loved it. I felt it kept the perspective right where it needs to be - on Elliott. I also felt that it handled the 'big reveal' of the season beautifully. The acting was, as usual, stellar from the entire cast.

The finale left me with a lot of questions, and has caused me to have a certain theory that, if proven correct, will take the show in an entirely new (and unforseen) direction. I cannot wait for season 3.

OTHER

Funko Pops

I was late getting into these but I am now obsessed. They are super cute and they pretty much have something for everyone. It is a slippery slope though because you won't be able to stop at one.

I am super excited for the Stranger Things set in 2017!

My Disney Trip

On a more personal note, one of the highlights of 2016 for me was getting to go to ALA in Orlando and visiting Disney World. I go to see my friend Kelly and generally had a great time.

Disney is one of my favourite places, and it really is magical.

I am hoping to go back soon (maybe even next  year) and would especially love to see it decorated for Halloween as I haven't had that experience yet.

MOVIE

Me Before You movie adaptation

A movie adaptation that was highly faithful to the source material and had some great casting. I loved both Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin as Lou and Will. Emilia was especially adorable as Lou. She was perfectly cast and managed to light up the screen. Sam was equally well cast as Will. He had that dry sense of humour and charm that Will had in the book.

It had all the major scenes from the book and ensured that the feel and tone of Jojo Moynes novel was felt throughout the entire movie. It was heartbreaking and that is exactly what I wanted from the movie.

Captain America: Civil War

This movie rounded out the Captain American trilogy nicely, while securing the future of the Marvel Universe movies. The introduction of Black Panther was brilliant and pretty much made everyone excited for his upcoming solo movie. He was one of the highlights and was cast perfectly. The new Spiderman proved to be charming and ensured that everyone would be excited about his upcoming movie. The humour of Peter Parker was there in spades.

I happen to be Team Cap so I especially loved everything between Steve, and his group. Bucky is my favourite and this rounded out the Winter Solider story arc nicely as well. It's a fantastic trilogy and a fantastic movie all on its own.

La La Land

A wistful throwback to classic Hollywood musicals that is every bit as romantic, whimsical and sweet as you would expect. There are a lot of callbacks to iconic scenes, and an overall feeling of nostalgia is present during the entire movie.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have a natural chemistry and rapport that shines through their scenes and made this movie even more heartfelt. It is one I will be adding to my collection and one I predict will take home plenty of awards come awards season.

ALA 2016 and Disney World

You may recall I mentioned I would be going this past week to ALA in Orlando. I left on the 22nd of June and got back on the 29th. I am (almost) recovered from a fantastic vacation but before I get to business as usual on the blog I thought I would offer up a recap of what I got up to while in Orlando.

First up, and obviously most important, is ALA itself. I loved that ALA is very low key compared to BEA. It may have been that there is simply less people, but ALA is way more relaxing. This allowed me more time to take part in buzz panels where the publishers discussed their upcoming fall titles. I also had more time to chat with the publishers about the books they were promoting. This allowed me to discover new titles that I would have perhaps not discovered otherwise.

Do I prefer ALA to BEA? That depends. I think I need to experience ALA again. BEA, for me, is an incredible rush. That rush comes with the excitement from other bookish fans. I didn't feel that same feeling at ALA. I did, however, like the opportunities ALA provided to really dig into the titles and learn more about them. I think I will do BEA for the foreseeable future but will attend ALA whenever it happens to be in a city I want to visit anyway.

I came back with a few titles that I am really excited about.

For Day 1 I really wanted to meet Emery Lord and that was my only real must do of the conference. I was successful and Emery is so kind. She is exactly what you expect her to be, and I immediately wanted to drink wine with her and have her give me life advice.

I also got to meet Jay Asher and get a copy of What Light (which was another one of my most anticipated titles of the conference). He was also really kind, and we joked about the length of his line as it was one of the biggest of the conference.

I snagged Die For You after the Penguin Random House representative told me a little bit about it. I didn't know much about it before Kelly mentioned I should look into it, but I was sold when I heard how passionately the publisher was about it.

Die For You by Amy Fellner Dominy (goodreads)
What Light by Jay Asher (goodreads)
When We Collided by Emery Lord (goodreads)

My second day was filled with pretty exciting discoveries. First up, I managed to get a copy of Glitter by Aprilynne Pike which is a book I've been REALLY excited about. It's been described as Marie Antoinette meets Breaking Bad which is basically like cat nip for me.

Kelly sold me on the Graces because one of the characters is described as the school's version of Peter Pan. Immediately sold. I will be reading it as soon as I can sneak it into the reading schedule.

This Adventure Ends was a impulse pick up after I read the back of the copy Kelly snagged and I immediately wanted to read it. I hadn't heard much about it, but I am excited to find out if it is as good as it sounds.

Lastly, for day two, I picked up a copy of Vassa In The Night after asking the Tor person to tell me a little about their fall titles. This one really stood out and the Tor representative seemed very passionate about it.

Vassa In The Night by Sarah Porter (goodreads)
This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills (goodreads)
The Graces by Laure Eve (goodreads)
Glitter by Aprilynne Pike (goodreads)

The last day was also the most frenzied. It seemed that the publishers wanted to make sure that their titles got into the hands of librarians and reviewers. It was also when they were putting out anything they had left, rather than you inquiring about a title.

I read the back of The Girl In The Picture and immediately became obsessed. A picture of a girl is found by the body of the high school heartthrob. This murder mystery has the potential to heat up my summer reading if I can fit it in.

I've had my eye on Cherry for a while (basically since I heard it was a female American Pie) and was thrilled when I discovered it at ALA. It was hidden so I didn't noticed they had copies until I noticed it while inquiring about something else.

I am a sucker for Hollywood set mysteries and obviously Pasadena was a must get for me. I was happy to discover copies there and I am so excited to read it.

The Girl In The Picture by Alexandra Monir (goodreads)
Cherry by Lindsey Rosin (goodreads)
Pasadena by Sherri L Smith (goodreads)
Jess, Chunk, And The Road Trip To Infinity by Kristin Elizabeth Clark (goodreads)
Everything You Want Me To Be by Mindy Mejia (goodreads)
P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han (goodreads)

A huge thank you to the publishers and all the bloggers I chatted with who made this event so much fun. There were moments where I felt unwelcome as a blogger so I am so thankful to those who took the time to talk to me and were kind.

The rest of my time in Orlando was sent relaxing, and visiting Disney World. I am a huge Disney fan (which surprises nobody) and will take any chance to visit a truly magical theme park.

There was a lot that was new at Disney. First up was the Tangled area with Rapunzel's tower and the town square. This is a themed restroom area, but I can easily see it expanding to include a restaurant (The Snuggly Duckling, of course) or other attractions.

One of my favourite rides is Peter Pan's Flight

It is a must ride for me every time I go and I was thrilled to discover they had made some serious modifications to this attraction. The biggest update was to the waiting area which is now a lovely walk through the Darling house. I was fangirling all over the place but especially loved the bedrooms for Wendy, John and Michael and how they incorporated Tinkerbell into the new waiting area.

I loved the pictures on the walls, and especially the little details (like the blocks on Michael's bed spelling out Peter Pan). It made the experience all the more vivid.

We ate lunch at Be Our Guest which is, obviously, a Beauty and the Beast themed restaurant. We selected the West Wing to eat in and it was perfection.

We got to see the (incredibly well done) rose that is the centre piece of the movie.

We also saw the portrait that Beast destroys after he is cursed. They had thunder and lightning that would flash at various intervals and transform the picture into the beast.

We got to try the grey stuff, and it was indeed delicious.

And this incredible artwork was the perfect way to leave this stunning attraction.

Outside the restaurant is Gaston's Tavern and in front of that is a Gaston's gift to the village.

A fountain of himself, naturally. It is so perfect that I just cannot. The plaque in front makes it even more priceless and it's little things like this that Disney gets just right.

One of my favourite parts of Magic Kingdom is getting to see Cinderella's Castle. It looks particularly pretty at night during the fireworks, but it is honestly so iconic that I could take pictures of it all day.

I also managed to try Dole Whip for the first time, and it was life changing. I now need to have it every single time I visit Disney. If you have never tried Dole Whip be sure to next time you visit.

Pineapple drinks are delicious and frozen pineapple drinks are even better, just saying.

The two biggest additions since I last visited though were The Seven Dwarfs Mine ride, and Frozen Ever After. I managed to ride both. The Seven Dwarfs Mine ride is similar to Big Thunder Mountain (I feel it is the less intense of the two) but it has a lot of charm, particularly when you go into the mine and visit the dwarfs while they are busy working. Adorable. Sadly, the ride is a little too quick to get photos, but the attention to detail (especially the inside parts) is typical Disney.

I jumped over to Epcot to visit Norway's pavilion and the new Frozen Ever After Ride. I arrived first thing in the morning and this is what I was greeted with...

Some people left the line, and it did speed up which shortened my wait time to just about 2 hours and I happily waited. The ride itself? Totally worth it. It was magical. So magical in fact that I decided to get in line and ride it again. This ride has minor thrills as you go down a few 'waterfalls' (one of which is done backwards) but if you rode Maelstrom you'll be well prepared for the (small) drops.

The attention to detail is, once again, perfection and I was especially impressed with Olaf who is a dancing, moving, bundle of cute. Seriously.

I had the best time at Disney. It truly is one of the most magical places and I am so excited to go back.

Did you attend ALA? If so let me know what you were most excited about. If not, what book would you want to read first that was at ALA?

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Just One Day by Gayle Forman

This book! I had such a deep and personal reaction to this book, and especially the main character. Willem is totally swoon worthy, and EVERYONE will be gushing about this one when it's released. It made the plane ride to Florida so much better!

Cover for Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay

I have always loved the Beauty and the Beast fairytale. This twist on the classic tale sounds amazing, and that cover...well it's simply beautiful. The red and black combination is a favourite of mine. Check out the Goodreads synopsis for more details.

Cover for Of Triton by Anna Banks

Pretty steamy right? I love the underwater kiss, and the little bubbles look like sparkles (or diamonds) floating around them. All around a pretty hot cover. Add it to your Goodreads (beware of spoilers for the first book though!).

TV

Bates Motel trailer

This looks really good. I am loving everything I have seen so far. I am a little apprehensive about the fact that they have moved this into current times though. I thought it was a straight prequel where they showed how Norman became the man we see in Psycho.  However, this still sounds like it'll be fantastic. The acting looks solid, and it seems well cast. I have high hopes for this, and can't wait to watch it in March.

OTHER

Disney World

The trip was fantastic. I can't wait to go again. If you missed my recap and want to see photos, I have a post written up already.

So what are you obsessed with this week?

Disney World Vacation 2012

This post is a little different, and a little more personal than I normally do.

I was gone all last week on vacation to Florida! I went with my sister and her family to Disney World. Getting to introduce my nieces to one of my favourite places on earth was awesome. The little munchkins had a fantastic time, and I am so glad they got to experience it at a young age.

Disney World really is magical, and it makes me feel like a kid again every single time I go. I am going to share some of my photos, and do a bit of a recap post today, and the bookish posts will resume tomorrow.

One of the highlights for me was getting to see the new Fantasyland area. The inclusion of both Prince Eric (The Little Mermaid) and Prince Adam's castles (Beauty and the Beast) is amazing, and both are so well done! The Be Our Guest Restaurant is stunning and the food is excellent. The Forbidden West Wing area of the restaurant was by far my favourite, and it immediately brings the feel of the movie to life.

I am looking forward to the new Snow White ride in 2014 and the little bit I saw while there looks great already.

I discovered that a trip to Disney with young children really is quite different from going with adults. We got a lot less done, but seeing it with them was amazing. I am already wanting to go back, and hope to do so in 2014.

On to some of my favourite pictures:

Cinderella's Castle At Night

Lumiere and Belle in the new Enchanted Tales with Belle Attraction

I just love this photo of my niece Kenadie.

Avery on the Carousel

Brooklynn on the Carousel

Kenadie on the Carousel

Brooklynn and Kenadie in their new sweaters

The entrance to the Be Our Guest Restaurant (which happens to be Prince Adam's castle)

LOVED this place! Stunning and yummy food

Prince Eric's castle

Rapunzel's tower. So excited to see what this is going to be!

Thanks for putting up with this post! :) Bookish things resume tomorrow! If you have ever been to Disney World (or Land) let me know your favourite ride/attraction/etc in the comments.

New To My Book Closet....sort of

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

This week's mailbox is something a little different. I do not have any new books to show, but I do have other goodies.

I went to Disney World this past week, and am going to show off the one present I got myself while there. My favourite part of the trip was getting to see the new Fantasyland area. The Beauty and the Beast area is stunning. From Belle's village (complete with Maurice's home, and Gaston's Tavern), to Prince Adam's castle (aka the Beast) the detail is amazing. I will be offering a full recap on Tuesday but I picked up a wine glass in one of the new shops next to the beyond awe inspiring Be Our Guest restaurant.

While I was away I received my first Christmas card of the season! It was from the lovely Lindsay from Me on Books. It's super cute, and I hope mine to her actually gets to her before Christmas.

I am off to recover from my vacation! The blog resumes regular schedule on Monday with a guest post! Happy Sunday and Happy Reading!

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Cover for Antigoddess by Kendare Blake

I really like this cover. It's simple, and yet very striking. The offset of the dark colours with the white feather adn that splash of red really pop out. Super excited to read this one as the synopsis sounds amazing too!

TV

I Hunt Killers TV Show

ABC Family, the network behind the Pretty Little Liars TV show, are adapting Barry Lyga's I Hunt Killers. I am very excited, and can't wait to see how they cast as Jasper. For more info, Hollywood Crush has the details.

OTHER

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Title for the sequel to Poision Princess by Kresley Cole

I enjoyed Poision Princess so much. I am really looking forward to finding out more about Death. He seems like a intriguing and possibly swoon worthy character. Kresley managed to make a pulse pounding story out of the Tarot cards and I am excited the sequel already has a title.....Endless Knight!

Super excited about the Oct 2013 release date and I can not wait to get my hands on it.

Night Film by Marisha Pessl

I stumbled upon this accidently the other day and am quite intrigued. The Goodreads synopsis states
A psychological literary thriller in which a young New York filmmaker sets out to investigate the apparent suicide of Ashley Cordova, daughter of a famous and reclusive movie director
Doesn't it sound awesome? I have a feeling there is more to Ashley Cordova's death than seen at first glance. It says it comes out in Feb of 2013, so hopefully I will be reading it soon.

Cover of Star Cursed, sequel to Born Wicked

I LOVED Born Wicked. I am dying to get my hands on Star Cursed. While I am sad about the change in covers, this one is just as pretty.

TV

Bates Motel

A TV show that is a prequel to the iconic movie Psycho. A teenage Norman Bates and the beginning of the twisted relationship he has with his mother. Freddie Highmore plays Norman and I have been hearing his performance is chilling. Entertainment Weekly has two exclusive teasers, and I am in love already. I can't wait until this airs.

OTHER

DisneyWorld

1 week until I introduce my most favourite little people in the whole world to the magic that is Disney World. This week is going to feel super long as I just want to get on the plane and leave already!

So what are you obsessed with this week?

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I can't believe I have not read this earlier. It is dark, twisty, and f#@cked up in the best ways. This novel is most likely making it on my "Top Reads of 2012" list that is coming in December. If you haven't read it - DO SO! Just be sure to not spoiler yourself ANYTHING. It's a book that you need to experience as things unfold.

OTHER

DisneyWorld

On December 8th I will be leaving to head to Florida for a week holiday with my family. We are introducing my little nieces to the magical world of Disney. I am so excited for them to meet Cinderella especially. It's going to be a wonderful experience!

Christmas Holidays

As the end of the November comes near I start to get really excited about Christmas. I am WAY behind in shopping this year (blame Disney) and I am looking forward to getting some gifts out of the way soon. I love spending the holidays with my family and it really is one of my favourite times of the year.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

More book deals have been announced and there are two I am excited to check out.

The Uninvited by Sophie Jordan

Here is where I admit I haven't read Sophie's over novels. They didn't really grab my attention even though I had read great reviews for them. This one however sounds amazing. Check out the Goodreads synopsis
The first in a two-book series pitched as The Scarlet Letter meets Minority Report; in which a teen's perfect world unravels when mandatory genetic profiling reveals she's a carrier for HTS (Homicidal Tendency Syndrome), otherwise known as the "kill gene" and she's forced to question herself, her world, and her love.
Seriously? The Scarlet Letter meets Minority Report? AWESOME. What happens to the people who are found to have HTS? Are they sent somewhere? Is the system corrupt? So many questions that come from this  brief synopsis. Looking forward to this one being released in 2013 by Harperteen.

All The Rage by Courtney Summers

I read the synopsis for this and immediately started to fangirl. This sounds amazing. Check out the Goodreads synopsis
A 17-year-old girl’s attempt to blackmail her rich classmates results in her waking up on a dirt road with no money, no memory of how she got there and a semi-erased message she left for herself the only clue as to why. When she tries to piece together the evening before and all the events leading up to it, a dark and sinister game is revealed. Likened to Brick and Veronica Mars.
This sounds amazing. A little Veronica Mars is never a bad thing, and I am intrigued to find out why she is blackmailing her classmates and how she ended up on a dirt road. St Martin Press is publishing this one in 2013 and I am so anxious to get my hands on it.

Does anyone else think 2013 is looking to be the BEST year in books? So many amazing, and UNIQUE sounding titles.

Some other titles I have come across recently that are releasing soon (THIS FALL!) and I think sound amazing.

The Dead Girls Detective Agency by Suzy Cox

The Goodreads synopsis of this sounds cute, and like it might have an interesting mystery at the heart of it
When Charlotte comes to after being pushed onto the subway tracks, she is informed by a group of teenage girls that she is dead…they all are. Meet the Dead Girls Detective Agency. With the support of these dynamic girls—including fashionable Lorna, who can’t wait to find out if the devil actually wears Prada, and nerdy Nancy, who insists on staying in limbo to help out other girls—Charlotte follows leads and tracks down clues to solve her own murder. With plenty of juicy mysteries and some pretty cute guys, readers are sure to fall in love with this fun and suspenseful page-turner!
Investigating her own murder? Creepy but awesome. I hope this is as cute, and suspenseful as I am thinking it's going to be. This comes out September 18 from HarperTeen

34 Pieces of You by Carmen Rodrigues

The Goodreads synopsis for this one sounds a lot like Thirteen Reasons Why.
There was something about Ellie... Something dangerous. Charismatic. Broken. Jake looked out for her. Sarah followed her lead. And Jess kept her distance, and kept watch.
Now Ellie’s dead, and Jake, Sarah, and Jess are left to pick up the pieces. All they have are 34 clues she left behind. 34 strips of paper hidden in a box beneath her bed. 34 secrets of a brief and painful life.
Jake, Sarah, and Jess all feel responsible for what happened to Ellie, and all three have secrets of their own. As they begin to confront the darkest truths about themselves, they will also find out what Ellie herself had been hiding all along....
Sounds like it could be really emotional, and intense and really good. I enjoyed Thirteen Reasons Why and felt like that book should be mandatory reading in highschools. Hopefully this one is just as poignant. This comes out September 4 from Simon Pulse.

Mystic City by Theo Lawrence

A little Romeo and Juliet happening in the Goodreads synopsis.
For fans of Matched, The Hunger Games, X-Men, and Blade Runner comes a tale of a magical city divided. A political rebellion ignited. A love that was meant to last forever.
Aria Rose, youngest scion of one of Mystic City's two ruling rival families, finds herself betrothed to Thomas Foster, the son of her parents' sworn enemies. The union of the two will end the generations-long political feud—and unite all those living in the Aeries, the privileged upper reaches of the city, against the banished mystics who dwell below in the Depths. But Aria doesn't remember falling in love with Thomas; in fact, she wakes one day with huge gaps in her memory. And she can't conceive why her parents would have agreed to unite with the Fosters in the first place. Only when Aria meets Hunter, a gorgeous rebel mystic from the Depths, does she start to have glimmers of recollection—and to understand that he holds the key to unlocking her past. The choices she makes can save or doom the city—including herself.
So obviously there will be a love triangle, and I am curious as to why Aria has holes in her memory. I love the cover of it too, so pretty. Random House is publishing this one October 9, 2012.

TV

Once Upon A Time season finale

Crazy twists? Check. Romantic reunions? Check. Beloved (by me anyways) character seemingly dies? Check. Insane cliffhanger that will leave you gasping until the fall? CHECK. We left Storybrooke with "something bad" coming (Got to love Henry) and we are in for a intriguing second season.

OTHER

Book Expo America

TWO WEEKS!! Yes, this Sunday is the two week mark before I leave to go to NYC. My excitement level is pretty unmanageable right now and I am having fangirl freak outs on a daily basis.  Kirkus reviews released their BEA Guide. It offers their picks for what to get and the titles in there all sound amazing. I am looking forward to surrounding myself with bookish people and can't wait to share everything in blog posts when I get back.

Disney World

As some of you know I have three young nieces. They are going to be visiting Disney World for the first time this December. Yesterday, I purchased my flight to go with them! I am so looking forward to their little faces when they meet their favourite characters. I predict freak outs over Cinderella and Belle. I already can't wait to explore the most magical place on earth with my sister's family.

So what you are obsessed with this week?
