Best Reads Of 2020 .... So Far

We are in July which means we are half way through the year. This means it is time to do my list of the best books I have read this year (at least so far).

I have not read nearly as much as I have in previous years but I am.doing okay on my Goodreads goal at this point. I am, however, finding it hard to make a top ten list this year which is why this will only include seven books.

Here, in no particular order, at the seven books that have stood out to me during the first half of this year.

1. Catch and Kill by Ronan Farrow

2. Seduction by Karina Longworth

3. The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher

4. In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

5. Something To Talk About by Meryl Wilsner

6. Love, Creekwood by Becky Albertalli

7. You Should See Me In A Crown by Leah Johnson

The ones that I have already written a review for will link to those reviews, and the ones I have not are upcoming reviews to expect on the blog soon!

What books are your favourites so far this year? Any books I should make sure not to miss before 2020 ends? Let me know in the comments.

Best of 2019 - Book Edition

As the year comes to a close it is once again time to reflect back on the books I read and highlight a few that I particularly enjoyed reading this year.

My reading suffered this year. I did not read nearly as many books as I hoped to. I am resolving to fix this in 2020. I did manage to read some pretty awesome books this year though.

Here are my top ten reads of this year (in no particular order). They each link to my review (where one has been written and posted) if you want to see exactly why I loved them.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

3 Stay Sexy and Don't Get Murdered by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark

4 Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

5 The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh

Transcend/Epoch by Jewel E Ann

Chase Darkness With Me by Billy Jensen

8 The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams

9 American Royals by Katharine McGee

10 A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

This list, obviously, includes books released this year and some that were not. My only criteria was that they had to be books I read this past year.

Do you agree with any of the books on list? Feel there is a book I missed this year that I should make a priority to read in 2019? Let me know in the comments.

Best of 2019 - Movie Edition

As we say goodbye to 2019 I thought I would share my top ten list of the best movies I saw this year. I kept this to movies that came out this year to help narrow it down.

These are in no particular order (as that would be impossible). There are also some movies that have come out this year that I haven't seen yet (like Uncut Gems for example).

There were plenty of movies I liked this year but only a few that I would say I LOVED. I don't really have a Call Me By Your Name/A Star Is Born movie that I am completely obsessed with this year. It makes this list a little harder, and a little more interesting to write.

Here is my Best Movies of 2019 list:

1. Parasite

There are always movies that people will tell you to go in knowing as little as possible as to not ruin or taint the experience. Many have said it regarding Parasite. This is one of the times where this advice should actually be followed. It's a fantastically plotted movie that is better enjoyed as an experience. The performances, directing, script, and pretty much everything else are incredible.

2. Marriage Story

This movie offers an uncomfortable look at a marriage that is ending. It, at times, may feel too authentic to people who have gone through a divorce. It's, mostly, filled with reasons that this marriage does not work, but does show you these little moments where you understand why they were together. It doesn't take a real 'side' in terms of who is a fault but instead offers that it was a mixture of both people in the marriage that caused it to not work out. Adam Driver gives an incredible performance as do many other members of the cast.

3. The Farewell

A beautiful, sad, and sort of uplifting movie about a woman and her connection with her grandmother and what happens when that grandmother gets ill and the family decides to keep the diagnosis from her. This is one that manged to sneak up on me and I didn't realize how much it had impacted me until it was over. Awkwafina delivers a different performance than what is typically expected of her and does so brilliantly.

4. Knives Out

A fun, incredibly entertaining, whodunit from director/writer Rian Johnson that I had a blast watching. Great performances from the entire cast (and an especially enjoyable turn from Chris Evans in a fantastic cable knit sweater) and a satisfying conclusion to the mystery at hand make this one a must watch.

5. Booksmart

A supremely fun coming of age story from director Olivia Wilde that boasts amazing performances from Beanie Feldstein, Kaitlyn Dever, and Billie Lourd. Think Superbad but teen girls instead. It's a funny, sometimes raunchy, heartfelt, and entertaining coming of age story that entirely charmed me.

6. Rocketman

Taron Egerton carries this movie and does so brilliantly. It is one of my favourite performances of the year. It also happens to be a good movie. Elton John's involvement ensured that the music was exactly what you wanted from this movie, and he didn't demand they sweep past any of the struggles he went through. Making it more of a musical than a straight up biopic was a fantastic choice as Elton John's story is one that would lend itself to this more than others.

7. Us

I did not like Us as much as I liked Get Out. There were elements from US that fell a little short for me, but it was still one of my favourite experiences at the movies this year. It boasts one of the year's best performances from Lupita Nyongo. She's incredible as Red. The movie itself is a good horror movie, and once again showcases Jordan Peele's directing skills.

8. Little Women

I am pretty sure people will be mixed on this movie, but I enjoyed it immensely. Saoirse Ronan is a great Jo, and Timothee Chalamat is a perfect Laurie. I do think that fans of Little Women, and those familiar with the story, will enjoy it more than those who are going into it fresh (but I doubt that applies to many people at this point). You can tell that director Greta Gerwig loves the source material and that shines through every frame of this movie.

9. Hustlers

This is another movie that is fun to watch. It may be overtly about this group of women scamming money out of a bunch of rich wall street guys, but it is also about female friendship. Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez's performances are great (and Jennifer Lopez should absolutely be in the Supporting Actress talks for Oscar nominations). It is the type of female led movie that I hope to see more of in the future.

10. Lords Of Chaos

A movie that will absolutely not appeal to everyone. It's violent (sometimes brutally so) and doesn't delve as far into some of the elements surrounding the true crime that inspired this movie as I would have liked. It does, however, boast some pretty good performances and manages to be mesmerizing while you are watching it. Rory Culkin and Emory Cohen, in particular, stand out in the cast, but Jack Kilmer's portrayal of Pelle 'Dead' Ohlin also lingers with you.

What movies make your Best of 2019 list? Let me know which ones I need to check out in the comments below.

Best Reads Of 2019 .... So Far

We are quickly approaching the midway point of the year and that means checking in on my reading progress and the books that have stood out so far.

I am always amazed at how fast the year is going whenever I decide to write one of these posts. It seems like it is flying by in particular this year.

I have not read nearly as much as I wanted to. I am already 8 books behind in my Goodreads challenge. I am hoping to refocus my attention on reading and the blog and making some progress this summer.

Taking a look at what books I have read this year has made me realize that I have become quite good at picking books that will appeal to me. I feel like my reading is made all the richer as a result. I still stray outside my comfort zone (especially if friends recommend a book) but feel like I genuinely know what books I will and will not enjoy. This has made picking my ten favourites even more difficult.

Here, in no particular order, are the ten books that have stood out to me during the first half of the year;

1. Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

2. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

3. Stay Sexy and Don't Get Murdered by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark

4. The Kingdom by Jess Rothenberg

5. A Curse So Dark And Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

6. You'd Be Mine by Erin Hahn

7. Top Secret by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

8. Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins

9. 99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

10. Chase Darkness With Me by Billy Jensen

All of the above books are linked to my reviews so you can discover exactly why they made my list if you so choose. Chase Darkness With Me is not currently reviewed so there is no link for that, but expect a review closer to release date.

I will be curious to see which books make it on to my year end list as the year continues! What book makes your own best of 2019 (at least so far) list? Let me know in the comments!

Best Of 2018 - Everything Else

Wrapping up my look back at 2018 with the best of everything else (ie: not books or movies) before looking forward to what I am excited for in 2019!

Television

American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace

This was, perhaps, my favourite season of television in 2018. Darren Criss' incredible performance as Andrew Cunanan, the show introduced us to the talented Cody Fern, gave us a fantastic Judith Light performance, reminded us that Finn Wittrock is incredibly talented, and it offered up a socially relevant message about the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community. It may have been quieter than the OJ Simpson season, but, I personally feel, the performances were event stronger.

Killing Eve

Two amazing performances from Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer. It's a cat-and-mouse style thriller that was also really fun to watch!

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

This fun, and darker, twist to the Sabrina Spellman story was a welcome one. The casting is pretty perfect (I especially love Ross Lynch's Harvey and Chance Perdomo's Ambrose) and the show has just enough humour to balance its darker plot.

Other

Disgraceland Podcast

I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts so it will come as no surprise that I immediately gravitated towards this podcast that is basically musicians behaving badly. Some of the episodes are very true crime based, others are just outrageous stories of performers at their worst. It's a fascinating, entertaining podcast whose host also happens to have an incredible voice and a talent for storytelling.

Little Gold Men Podcast

Vanity Fair's podcast focusing on the path to the Oscars has been a delight for me this year. Following them through this entire year from immediately after the last Oscars to this one has allowed me to follow the long and interesting path to get there in a way I never had before. It's a must listen for fans of movie award shows, but particularly if Oscars are your thing.

My Favorite Murder Podcast

This also made my list last year but Karen and Georgia continue to be my go to for podcasts. I also got to attend a live show in 2018 and it was one of my favourite moments of the year.

What television and podcasts from 2018 made your own best of lists? Let me know in the comments!

Best Of 2018 - Movies

As we say goodbye to 2018 I thought I would share my top ten list of the best movies I saw in 2018. I kept this to movies that came out this year to help narrow it down.

These are in no particular order (as that would be impossible). There are also some movies that have come out in 2018 that I haven't had a chance to see yet (like If Beale Street Could Talk, Vice, On The Basis of Sex to name a few).

Here is my Best Movies of 2018 list:

1. A Star Is Born

My gushy review (or the fact that I saw this four times in theatres) probably already indicated this movie would be on this list. I love this movie and I will totally be rooting for it to do well this awards season. It was a critical and commercial success and is filled with a stunning, career best performance from Bradley Cooper, a fantastic supporting turn for Sam Elliott, and introduces Lady Gaga as an actress to watch.

2.The Favourite

Three powerhouse performances from Olivia Coleman, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone are the heart of this movie. It's a darkly humourous, feminist look at the ways in which these ladies use and are used. It flips the genre of period drama on its head and offers up a refreshing take. Watch out for Coleman to clean up during awards season!

3. BlacKkKlansman

An important movie whose gut punch ending is the stuff that stays with you. This movie has lots of humour, but it is the more serious elements that make you realize the message of this movie. Things, sadly, have not changed all that much in the years since this movie was set. All this combined with solid performances from the whole cast make this an easy one to put on this list.

4. A Simple Favor

Possibly the most fun I had at the movies this year in terms of sheer enjoyment. Blake Lively gives a career best performance as the 'bad girl' to Anna Kendrick's equally well done 'good girl'. This movie has more twists than I could count, ensures that Henry Golding will continue to see his star rise, and is more funny than you're expecting.

5. Love, Simon

This movie is a joy to watch. It's a sweet, heartfelt rom-com that also has some great family stuff at its core. Nick Robinson charms as Simon and you'll easily be rooting for him to get his happy ending.

6. Crazy Rich Asians

This movie not only had cultural significance but was another movie that offered a fun night out at the movies. Constance Wu shines as Rachel Wu. Henry Golding charms as Nick Young. The romance is sweet and filled with just enough angst. The movie itself is gorgeous to look at with a bright colour palette and beautiful Singapore setting.

7. Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse

My personal pick for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars this year. If you're a fan of Spiderman, superhero movies, or just good animation I highly recommend this one. It's a classic origin story, complete with epic moments, and it hits all of the right notes.

8. Boy Erased

A powerful movie filled with solid performances. This one may not have been a 'fun' time at the movies, but it was one that lingered with me long after I had finished watching it. It is one that I wish would be seen by those who most need to see it (which sadly will not happen).

9. Avengers: Infinity War

This one is on my list for the experience of seeing it alone. There is nothing like experiencing a huge pop cultural moment with a theatre full of fellow fans. The movie was big, loud, and pretty much everything I wanted it to be. The humour was pitch perfect, and the characters and the bonds built between them were used to great impact. This was a hard movie to pull off and Marvel not only did it, but they nailed it. The heartbreaking ending ensure that everyone will be just as eager to see Endgame and I cannot wait.

10. Black Panther

Michael B Jordan's villainous turn as Killmonger is only one of the stand out elements of this excellent superhero movie. Ryan Coogler's directing makes this feel both familiar and unique with his attention to the little details that set this apart from the other Marvel movies.

Best Of 2018 - Books

As the year comes to a close it is once again time to reflect back on the books I read and highlight a few that I particularly enjoyed reading this year.

My reading suffered this year. I did not read nearly as many books as I hoped to. I am eager to fix this in 2019 and get my reading (and this blog) back on track. It's been a bit of a disaster. However, there were some amazing books I did manage to read this year.

Here are my top ten reads of this year (in no particular order). They each link to my review if you want to see exactly why I loved them.

1 The Dinner List by Rebecca Serle

2 Sadie by Courtney Summers

3 I'll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara

4 Side by Side by Jenni L Walsh

5 Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody

6 What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera

7 Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

8 The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

9 The Idea Of You by Robinne Lee

10 You by Caroline Kepnes

This list, obviously, includes books released this year and some that were not. My only criteria was that they had to be books I read this past year.

Do you agree with any of the books on list? Feel there is a book I missed this year that I should make a priority to read in 2019? Let me know in the comments.

Best I've Read In 2018 .... So Far.

As the midway point of the year is quickly approaching I figured it was time to check in with my year in reading up to this point. It's a great way to see how influential the first half of the way was to my overall reading and just a nice way to see how far I've come so far.

Sadly, I am way behind on my Goodreads reading challenge this year. I am 10 books behind schedule and I am not hopeful I'll catch up. I am going to give it my all but I am okay with possibly no making my goal this year.

I have noticed that my reading selection gets better every year and this year is no exception. I know what I like as a reader and have a better ability to pick out the books I am going to enjoy. It means my Goodreads ratings are trending really positive right now, but I am considering that a perk of the journey of discovering who I am as a reader. Does anyone else worry about being too positive sometimes, or are you just happy that you're picking books that you enjoy? Let me know.

I am reading a lot more romance than I tend to (at least for the first half the year). It's not surprising as there have been some great ones that have come out. I still think my reads lean heavily to young adult and I doubt that will ever really change.

As previously mentioned I haven't read as much as I typically have by this point in the year. This has made picking my ten favourite reads of the first half of 2018 harder in some ways and easier in others. I have less choices, but each choice feels more deliberate. Each exclusion hurts a little more than it has before.

With that said, here are my top ten of 2018 (so far) ....

*These are in no particular order*

1 Side By Side by Jenni L Walsh

2 Royals by Rachel Hawkins

3 I'll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara

4 The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

5 Save The Date by Morgan Matson

6 Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody

7 Legendary by Stephanie Garber

8 The Kiss Quotient by by Helen Hoang

9 Leah On The Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

10 You by Caroline Kepnes

Each book links to my review (except for The Kiss Quotient which I have not reviewed yet, but will be up next week).

What books would make your own best of lists at this point in the year? Let me know in the comments as I am always looking for new books to add to my to be read list.

Best I Read in 2017

As the year comes to end it is once again time to reflect on what I've read this year and attempt to pick out my favourites. It's hard every year, and this year is no exception.

I am going to do a Top Fifteen because narrowing it any further was just too hard. I've linked to my reviews where possible (except for books that have not been reviewed yet on the blog). These are in no particular order because that would also be impossible.

1. The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord

This is the type of book that makes you cry but in a cathartic way. It makes you cry the kind of cry you didn't know you needed. This is a book filled with so much hope. It's a must read for YA contemporary fans.

2. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

A fun, sexy, and enjoyable romance novel that was a delight to read. It's a banter filled escape that should be on your list for 2018 if you haven't read it already.

3. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

I feel no list of this nature would be complete with this title on it. If you only read one book published in 2017 I would recommend this one. It's an important, well written read. It's an impressive debut that ensures people will want to read whatever Angie Thomas writes next.

4. Becoming Bonnie by Jenni L Walsh

I was immediately excited when this book was announced and even more delighted when I got to read the novel and loved it. This well crafted story of how a girl like Bonnelyn Parker becomes half of the infamous Bonnie and Clyde duo. You'll instantly be awaiting the follow up novel, Side By Side, after devouring this one.

5. Midnight At The Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Jodi Lynn Anderson's writing always blows me away. It's magical and captivating. This story of three very different women in three different time periods interconnects in beautiful ways and leaves a lasting impression.

6. Roomies by Christina Lauren

This charming romance read has as smoking hot Irish musician as the love interest, and plenty of witty banter to spare. Christina Lauren's novels are always a delight to read, but this one felt special to me. I felt the story more, and it's a great read for those looking for something lighter in tone.

7. The Becoming Of Noah Shaw by Michelle Hodkin

I was so excited when Michelle announced that she would be writing a companion series to her Mara Dyer trilogy and that it would be from Noah's point of view. The first book in this series is dark, and Noah's head is not the more comfortable place to be, but Michelle's writing brings this broken character to life in a way that is breathtaking.

8. Lizzie by Dawn Ius

This doesn't come out until 2018, and I am going to review it closer to release, but I had to include it on this life. This novel follows Lizzie as she spirals into madness and ultimately ends with the death of her parents (it is, after all, inspired by the infamous Lizzie Borden). The twists and turns it takes to get there make the story feel new.

9. The Gentleman's Guide To Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Mackenzi Lee gives us both the ridiculously fun romp through Europe that you are expecting going into this novel and so much more. This book has a depth that you may not expect, and a wonderful cast of characters that will remain with you long after the book is finished.

10. The Afterlife Of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand

This book surprised me with how much I ended up loving it. The heart and emotion that A Christmas Carol has within it is definitely found within this modern take. It's one that I feel will become part of my Christmas tradition as I continue to read it again every December.

11. Renegades by Marissa Meyer

A fun superhero story that follows some recognizable tropes, but uses them to their best advantage. It's a book that is simply fun to read, and the ending sets up what is sure to be an explosive sequel.

12. There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins

Stephanie Perkins writing horror may seem like a surprising combination but only if you haven't followed on her any of her social media. She's a horror movie fan and this is her love letter to the genre. It's also got the classic Stephanie Perkins romance to satisfy fans of her other books.

13. The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

Becky Albertalli is two for two when it comes to writing books I adore. This book is a joy to read and only cements my desire to read anything she writes. This is a book for all the late bloomers out there, and I loved every minute of reading this one.

14. Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy

This novel features a bisexual main character discovering her bisexuality. I cannot speak to the depiction of bisexuality within it's pages, but others have praised the representation. I can speak to the emotions I felt while reading it, and the way in which I felt this story while reading it. Julie Murphy creates these amazing characters and Ramona is no exception.

15. The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

This book defies and twists all the tropes you would expect from this genre. It's an action packed novel that also has a wonderful love story within it.

What books made your own end of year list? Anything I missed reading this year that I should make a priority in 2018? Let me know in the comments.

Best I've Read In 2017 (so far)

July marks the midpoint of 2017. After I spent some time freaking out about how fast this year is going, I remembered that it meant it was time to share my annual post detailing my top ten list of best books I've read this year ... at least so far. I love doing this because it lets me see how much has changed (or stayed the same) by the end of the year. It also allows me to see which half was stronger in terms of books I loved. I am hoping it also allows my blog readers a chance to sneak in some of these titles before the end of the year!

1. The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord

I feel like an Emery Lord novel will never let me down. I continue to love and adore each book she releases and the characters that she creates. This is a novel that will make you cry, but in a cathartic way. It's the type of books that destroys your heart, but heals it too. It's one that should be on the list of every reader who loves YA contemporary novels.

2. There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins

This Scream inspired novel offers chills, romance, and the classic Stephanie Perkins character development. This is a love letter to teen slasher films with more than a few pulse pounding moments. It's one best not read at night as it'll leave you jumping at every noise within your house, and questioning every misplaced item in it.

3.  Midnight At The Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Jodi Lynn Anderson's beautiful writing will leave you mesmerized, and her ability to interweave three different narratives into one cohesive story will leave you in awe. This is the type of novel I could read over and over and find some new detail within it.

4. Becoming Bonnie by Jenni L Walsh

This novel takes the focus away from the infamous Bonnie and Clyde and instead offers the story of the young woman who would become Bonnie. This story will make you see a story you think you know in a different light, and probably leave you wishing history could be rewritten in the process.

5. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Angie Thomas's novel has received plenty of (well deserved) praise. It is not only well written, but is also one of the most thought provoking novels I've had the chance to read. It is one that stays with you long after you've finished reading, and one that, I feel,  belongs on reading lists in schools.

6. Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy

Julie Murphy's books always have amazing characters at their heart. Ramona's story is no exception. You will fall in love with her, her family, and her friends. You will also fall in love with her story. It is a story of a girl finding out who she is, and redefining who she is on her terms.

7. Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Reading this novel is like being swept away into a magical world. Stephanie Garber takes us into her world of magic, whimsy and romance and I pretty much did not want to leave. I cannot wait for the sequel and to return to this enchanting world.

8. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Funny, sexy, and a delight to read. This novel is one that leave you happy and for that reason alone it is worthy of multiple reads. This 'from enemies to lovers' romance is a perfect choice for those looking for a little spice with their romance.

9. The Gentleman's Guide To Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

A novel that completely surprised me in the best possible way. I knew I would love it, but I didn't expect it to tackle the topics it did with the weight and care it did. I got so much more than the fun European set romp I was expecting and I am so glad I did.

10. The Upside Of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

This is a story for all those who always feel that their crushes are unrequited. It is a story of taking risks, and not standing in your own way. It also is a happy making, grin inducing read that is entirely charming. If you loved Becky's debut novel, do not miss this one.

Best of 2016 ... Non Bookish

It feels like 2016 had been one year long suck fest, particularly towards the end. It is hard to remember that there were some good things about 2016. I listed the top books I read this year in a previous post, and now I am going to share the best of everything else - movies, TV, etc.

So here is what I loved in 2016

TELEVISION

Stranger Things

An incredible show that is filled with 80s nostalgia. It boasts a cast of adorable and talented kids, the return of Winona Ryder and was one of the biggest additions to pop culture this year.

If you haven't watched this I highly recommend you binge watch it immediately. You'll completely fall in love with the entire cast (but especially Eleven) and will be dying for them to release season two.

Lucifer

I was pleasantly surprised by this show. It is filled with charm, humour and wit. Tom Ellis plays a very charming and endearing Lucifer, but the rest of the cast shines equally as bright. Chloe and  Mazikeen in particular have really been given character development.

The ship in this show is on of my top ships right now. They are adorable together and they make each other better which I love. Binge this if you haven't because it will definitely surprise you.

Mr Robot Season 2

People had mixed feelings about the second season Mr Robot. I, personally, loved it. I felt it kept the perspective right where it needs to be - on Elliott. I also felt that it handled the 'big reveal' of the season beautifully. The acting was, as usual, stellar from the entire cast.

The finale left me with a lot of questions, and has caused me to have a certain theory that, if proven correct, will take the show in an entirely new (and unforseen) direction. I cannot wait for season 3.

OTHER

Funko Pops

I was late getting into these but I am now obsessed. They are super cute and they pretty much have something for everyone. It is a slippery slope though because you won't be able to stop at one.

I am super excited for the Stranger Things set in 2017!

My Disney Trip

On a more personal note, one of the highlights of 2016 for me was getting to go to ALA in Orlando and visiting Disney World. I go to see my friend Kelly and generally had a great time.

Disney is one of my favourite places, and it really is magical.

I am hoping to go back soon (maybe even next  year) and would especially love to see it decorated for Halloween as I haven't had that experience yet.

MOVIE

Me Before You movie adaptation

A movie adaptation that was highly faithful to the source material and had some great casting. I loved both Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin as Lou and Will. Emilia was especially adorable as Lou. She was perfectly cast and managed to light up the screen. Sam was equally well cast as Will. He had that dry sense of humour and charm that Will had in the book.

It had all the major scenes from the book and ensured that the feel and tone of Jojo Moynes novel was felt throughout the entire movie. It was heartbreaking and that is exactly what I wanted from the movie.

Captain America: Civil War

This movie rounded out the Captain American trilogy nicely, while securing the future of the Marvel Universe movies. The introduction of Black Panther was brilliant and pretty much made everyone excited for his upcoming solo movie. He was one of the highlights and was cast perfectly. The new Spiderman proved to be charming and ensured that everyone would be excited about his upcoming movie. The humour of Peter Parker was there in spades.

I happen to be Team Cap so I especially loved everything between Steve, and his group. Bucky is my favourite and this rounded out the Winter Solider story arc nicely as well. It's a fantastic trilogy and a fantastic movie all on its own.

La La Land

A wistful throwback to classic Hollywood musicals that is every bit as romantic, whimsical and sweet as you would expect. There are a lot of callbacks to iconic scenes, and an overall feeling of nostalgia is present during the entire movie.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have a natural chemistry and rapport that shines through their scenes and made this movie even more heartfelt. It is one I will be adding to my collection and one I predict will take home plenty of awards come awards season.

Top 15 Books I Read In 2016

The end of the year is upon us and that means Best Of lists. Today I am going to talk about my 15 favouite books of 2016. They may not be released in 2016 (hence the title of the post) but any book I read in 2016 counts.

These are in no particular order (that would be impossible) and each of them link to my review (where applicable).

1 - A Criminal Magic by Lee Kelly

A novel filled with wonder, romance, magic and that special allure of something forbidden. This book puts a fun twist on the prohibition era and creates a world that is unforgettable. A television adaption of this is in the works from Rob Thomas (the creator of Veronica Mars and iZombie) and I cannot wait to see this vivid world brought to life.

2 - Heartless by Marissa Meyer

A whimsical take on Wonderland that captures the essence of Lewis Carroll's original work. Marissa was woven in one of her trademark romances and offers up a heartbreaking look at the woman who would become Queen of Hearts.

3- Everland by Wendy Spinale

One of the most inventive and imaginative takes on the Peter Pan lore. A story that blends steampunk with the classic story of the boy who would not grow up and does so effortlessly. The world is vividly created, and the story is wonderfully plotted. I am dying for the sequel which further blends steampunk and fairytales together.

4- Asking For It by Louise O'Neill

An unflinching, brutally, honest look at rape culture, and its impact on how rape survivors are viewed and treated. This is hard to read at times, but so incredibly important. If you want to know why someone would choose to withdraw their complaint, or even not come forward at all, this book will shine a harsh light on the reality they face by coming forward.

5- A Night In With Audrey Hepburn/Marilyn Monroe by Lucy Holliday

I am kind of cheating by including both these books as one entry but it technically makes 15. This series is adorable, and tinged with more than a touch of Hollywood magic. It is reminiscent of Bridget Jones' Diary and has a main character who is just as charming. It is a perfect series to binge read by the pool. It's light, humourous and offers the perfect amount of escapism.

6- Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

I have not reviewed this yet, but look for my review early in the new year. This series is filled with jaw dropping surprises, complex sibling bonds, and well crafted fantasy elements. This story has some of my favourite romances I've read this year, simply because they add to the plot without feeling forced or distracting.

7- Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

A sequel that lives up to the first novel in the series, and expands upon it. This novel twists the story into a new direction which only enriches the world and the characters. An ending that basically leaves you willing to beg for the next book, and a cast filled with flawed, but engaging characters has only cemented my love for this series.

8- American Girls by Alison Umminger

Alison Umminger's razor sharp writing is the stand out from this story, but only slightly because everything else is just as wonderful. This is a story of girls both lost and found. This is a story of the harm society expectations can cause girls, and more glaringly the harm they can cause themselves and others. A snarky, fully developed voice for the main character ensures you're entirely in the story and I cannot wait to see what Alison writes next.

9- The Female Of The Species by Mindy McGinnis

This is a story about many different types of female characters. More importantly it is a story about female characters who are everything female characters are not supposed to be. It is also a jarring, and brutal look at rape culture and the way it shapes women's views of themselves, and others. It is a novel that is hard to read, but one that demands you not look away.

10 - How To Break A Boy by Laurie Devore

My review for this one will be up closer to its release date, but this is a story for everyone who likes their female characters morally ambiguous. It has been compared to many of Courtney Summers' novels and I can see why. The writing is sharp, and the characters are given distinct voices (even when we're not given their point of view). A story that is filled with female characters making questionable decisions and owning them. It also shows that these type of characters can still be worthy. It is not a zero sum game, and there are many shades of grey on the moral spectrum.

11 - The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

Morgan Matson's novels are always smile inducing and pair perfectly with summer. She creates these characters that you want to befriend, and stories that you want to disappear into. The Unexpected Everything reminds you to go off track every now and again because the unexpected is sometimes more magical than anything you have planned. It'll make you want to have a summer romance, and call your best friends to go for ice cream.

12 - This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills

One of the best contemporary novels I read this year. A story of friendship, self growth, and letting people in. It was wonderfully written, and filled with some unforgettable characters. Bonus points for the parents having such a large role in the story and not disappearing as they normally do in YA novels.

13 - Overdrive by Dawn Ius

A fun, high octane read that is filled with high speed car chases, a sexy romance and some seriously hot cars. If you're into heist novels with impossible odds this is one book you'll want to pick up. Dawn crafts a whirlwind journey through Las Vegas that will leave you begging for a follow up.

14 - The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee

This is one for fans of CW television shows. It is also for people who love their novels to be filled with delicious drama and jaw dropping twists combined with some seriously addictive writing. This is the definition of a summer page turner, and one that will ensure you get a sunburn because you won't able to to put it down.

What book is your favourite of 2016? Any of mine make your list, too? Let me know in the comments.

Best of 2015 (so far)

Top Ten Books Of 2015 (at least so far)

It's now six months in to 2015 and that means we're halfway through the year. It also means it's a perfect time to share the top ten books I've read this year, at least as of right now. I love doing this because it lets me see how much has changed (or stayed the same) by the end of the year. It also allows me to see which half was stronger in terms of books I loved. I am hoping it also allows my blog readers a chance to sneak in some of these titles before the end of the year!

1 Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

A novel that surprised me with how much I ended up loving it. It's the unforgettable story of Lou and Will. It left me wanting to tell everyone to read it in very excited yelling. This one should come with a package of tissues though, so prepare yourself accordingly.

2 A Court Of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

No surprise that a Sarah J Maas book made it's way onto my list. This twist on the Beauty and the Beast retelling enchanted and mesmerized me from page one. If you haven't checked out her novels yet, make it happen this year! This one offers a sexy fairytale that will leave you needing book two.

3 Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

If you've visited the blog you'll know that I LOVED this debut. A novel filled with betrayal, romance, fantastic characters, and a lot of courtly drama. This series is poised to be the next big thing in YA movie adaptations and is already a huge hit. Don't miss out!

4 A Darker Shade of Magic by Victoria Schwab

Magic, pirates, sadistic kings and thieves. Victoria Schwab spins a tale that is as well written as it is magical. Fans of her work will undoubtedly love this offering and new fans will become immediate fans. The world building shines, but it's the characters that truly make you fall in love with this amazing book.

5 Truly, Madly, Famously by Rebecca Serle

I loved Famous In Love and couldn't wait to see where Paige's journey would go next. Rebecca has written a thoughtful look at finding yourself under a harsh spotlight (missteps and all). It's a sexy, and fun book that has a lot of character development and growth. Fans of young Hollywood, love triangles, and CW shows will not want to miss this series.

6 I Was Here by Gayle Forman

Gayle Forman is one of my most favourite authors. This novel was a little different from her previous novels but still just as engrossing. A story of grief, and coming to terms with a loved ones suicide. It has the trademark romance that Gayle Forman is known for while having a huge focus on a friendship. It shows her versatility as an author and easily deserves a spot on this list.

7 Simon Vs The Homosapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

The buzz for this one was huge leading up to it's release, and deservedly so. A story filled with Oreos, pop culture references, amazing characters, and romance. Simon and Blue's story is unforgettable. You'll fall for Simon, his family and friends, and Blue (of course) and leave this one with a goofy smile on your face.

8 The Start Of Me and You by Emery Lord

Emery Lord knows the way to my heart with Taylor Swift inspired characters, Pride and Prejudice mentions and sweet romances. In this novel, the question 'Are you an Elizabeth or a Jane?' made me squeal way more than was appropriate in public. Her writing is amazing, and her stories have a lot of heart. This one is filled with the hardest part of grief - moving on. She captures it with delicate finesse and has made me a fan for life.

9 Anne and Henry by Dawn Ius

Anyone who knows me is well aware of my obsession with Tudor history. Anne Boleyn in particular. I love that she pushed boundaries at a time when it was not normally done. She was intelligent and wanted her voice to be heard. This contemporary tale inspired by the real life story of her and Henry is well written, and addictive. A sexy, explosive look at two people whose lust for each other is combustible and bound to consume them both.

10 Kill The Boy Band by Goldy Moldavsky

This doesn't come out until 2016, but I devoured it immediately after getting at BEA. It's a darkly humourous look at fandoms, and boybands. With shades of the cult classic HEATHERS it has a 'tongue in cheek' humour that is a dark as it is funny. Part exploration of fangirls, and part murder mystery, it'll keep you on your toes with it's twists and turns. Be sure to add it to your 2016 reading list, you won't regret it!

Best of 2014

As the end of one year, and the beginning of another approaches, it's time to reflect. This means all those Best Of lists begin to pop up everywhere, and this blog is no exception.

Here are the top 15 books I've read this year. I couldn't stop at 10. It was impossible. I even cheated a little and included two books in the same series together.

These are in no particular order, that would have been even more impossible.

Each selection links to my review (where available) if you wanted more information.

1 We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Beautiful writing, and a story that blends together sadness, summer, and a fantastic mystery. The "don't reveal the ending" marketing plan was buzz worthy, and in this case I happen to agree. Knowing the minimal amount about the story going in increases your enjoyment of this story as this is one to experience with the character.

2 The Winner's Curse/The Winner's Crime by Marie Rutkoski

I cheated and included both books under this as I've read both this year. The characters will ensnare you and keep you riveted with every single twist and bump during their journey. A story full of secrets, lies, hidden truths and political intrigue, it's one that keeps you guessing and crushes your heart (in the best way).

3 Half Bad by Sally Green

This story succeeds because of Nathan. His story will stay with you long after you finish the book. The potential for the rest of the series is evident in this first installment and I am excited to continue Nathan's journey and discover more of this rich world Sally Green has created.

4 Love Letters To The Dead Ava Dellaira

Told in letter format, this story offers a unique and satisfying experience. Through letters to deceased celebrities we learn Laurel's story. It's a story that isn't always a happy one. It's a mix of hopeful and heartbreaking and looks at the long road back from grief and forgiveness.

5 Since You've Gone by Morgan Matson

This novel will immediately leave you with the Kelly Clarkson song stuck in your head, and a smile on your face. Filled with a sweet romance, and friendship that has the starring role, and characters you want to be friends with, it's a lighter read that has a lot of depth. You'll want to create your own 'to do' list for your BFF when you turn that final page.

6 Brazen by Katherine Longshore

All of Katherine's novels have an underlying message of finding your voice, and standing up for what you believe in. Something that resonates no matter what year we're in. This story is of finding your own self worth, and embracing it. It's a story that is filled with sharp writing, and the lasting desire to live life with no regrets.

7 Famous In Love by Rebecca Serle

Any fan of Hollywood gossip, CW TV shows, and love triangles will devour this novel and immediately beg for more. It's depth, and characterization however will have you utterly smitten. It's a story of falling in love while everyone watches, of finding yourself while under the spotlight, and adjusting to drastic changes. You may end up being either Team Jordan or Team Rainer, but you'll undoubtedly end up finishing the novel Team Paige.

8 The Vanishing Season by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Jodi's breathtaking writing combined with her ability to create the kind of characters that get under your skin made this one a heartbreaking, crushing read. The mystery of the missing girls is secondary to the destructive relationships between the central characters, and it's aftermath.

9 I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson

My first Jandy Nelson book stunned me. I expect this one will pop up on quite a few of these lists and for good reason. Two distinct and unique voices, two unforgettable narrators, and a story that is capable of breaking your heart and mending it all at once. The sibling relationship is the heart of this story, and it's beautifully done. This novel also gave me Oscar, my new book boyfriend.

10 Open Road Summer by Emery Lord

If you ever wondered what it might be like to be BFFs with Taylor Swift, this novel is for you. Underneath the lightness and fun is an insanely enjoyable story. A friendship at it's heart, and a swoon worthy romance make for a quick paced read that is a fave debut for many. There is plenty of emotion packed into this read, and you'll end it being an Emery Lord fan.

11 The Iron Trial by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black

This novel takes fantasy tropes and flips them. You think you know this story, and where it's going only for Holly Black and Cassandra Clare to show you just how wrong that assumption was. It packs a surprising punch, and is perfect for middle grade and young adult fans alike. I cannot wait to see these characters grow and progress over the coarse of this story.

12 Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins

A finale that was more than worth the wait. While I may prefer Etienne to any of the other boys Stephanie Perkins has created, Isla is perhaps my favourite girl. She endeared herself to me immediately, and is perhaps the most like me. A romantic, achingly realistic, beautifully written conclusion to a stellar set of companion novels. Stephanie Perkins may just be the Queen of Contemporary novels (for me she shares the title with Gayle Forman).

13 The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen

The buzz around this one started when Emma Watson signed on to be the main character in the movie adaptation. Kelsea is a protagonist that quickly makes you fall in love with her. The Fetch is an intriguing element to the story and adds an air of mystery. The world building is one of my favourite parts of this story and seeing Kelsea grow and change is the heart of the story.

14 Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

Danielle Paige takes something beloved and makes it all her own. She twists Oz in fascinating ways all while maintaining the recognizable elements of the classic. The clear and concise set up allows for a tightly woven story that begs to be turned into a CW TV show. Those who want what made The Wizard of Oz so speical will find it here, just twisted beyond belief.

15 Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrois

Heather Demetrois' writing is often praised (and her 2015 release I'll Meet You There) is already gaining a lot of praise for it's writing). This novel is no exception. Combined with her writing is fantastic world building, and a love triangle that works because it really isn't a love triangle. This novel has magic, wonder, and a fantastic lead character that all equal up to a great read.

I could have easily made it 20, but decided to at least try to limit myself. Have you read any of these books? Did they make your Best Of list? Let me know in the comments.

Best Of 2014.... So Far

The halfway point of 2014 is quickly approaching and with it many best of (so far at least) lists. Since I typically do one, I figured now was as good a time as any.

Here are the ten books that I would consider my best of 2014...so far. These are in no particular order and are not ranked in any way.

We Were Liars by E Lockheart

The less said about this one the better. Just read it. Become a liar. You'll thank me after you've recovered.

Brazen by Katherine Longshore

Fans of Reign are being told to pick this one up. I completely agree. It's got scandalous Tudor drama, some rather adorable flirting, and some of my favourite friendships portrayed in a novel. Katherine also happens to be a fantastic writer, so the overall book is amazing.

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

Taking a beloved character and putting a deliciously sinful twist on her? Perfection. Danielle Paige's precision style writing, and attention to detail made this an intricate read. It left me dying for book two, and pretty sure I would never look at Dorothy the same way again.

Half Bad by Sally Green

A beautifully written book that puts a twist on the whole nature vs nurture question. A boy witch who has been ostracized his whole life for being 'half bad' offers heartbreaking moments, and a fascinating look at society in general.

Love Letters To The Dead by Ava Dellaria

This will leave you weepy, and may inspire you to write your own love letter to the dead. An impact debut novel that uses a letter style format to tell it's heartbreaking yet hopeful story. I easily got swept away.

Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson

A fun novel that has depth and layers. This one is perfect for the summer, and will leave you wanting to touch base with your own best friend...and maybe write them a list or two.

The Winner's Cure by Marie Rutkoski

Beautifully written, and some amazing world building mixed with incredible characters made Marie's novel a fantastic start to a new series. It's sneaks up on you and leaves you breathless as you feel it's full impact. Book two now, please!

Famous In Love by Rebecca Serle

Fun! Fun! Fun! If Hollywood love triangles, CW television shows, and novels that explore more than just the romance are your thing, YOU NEED TO PICK UP THIS BOOK. The characters, the setting, and the romance all won me over. My review will come closer to the date, but Rebecca had me hooked from the first paragraph. I basically need book two immediately.

Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrois

Intricate world building, a driven and determined female lead character, and some scorchingly sexy scenes made this a favourite. The interweaving of the all too real issue of the slave trade made this one resonate a little deeper. Full review to come soon (along with some other fun things) but this one easily charmed me.

The Blonde by Anna Godbersen

Marilyn Monroe as a spy is the premise for this tightly woven novel. Surprisingly this works much better than perhaps thought at first glance, and the author makes it seem entirely all to plausible. The romance between Marilyn and John F Kennedy provided a romantic backdrop that raised the stakes. A fantastic beach thriller for this summer!

What books made your list? Did you read any that are on mine? If so, what did you think?

Best of 2013

Top Ten Books of 2013!

We're getting close to the end of the year, and I am officially taking it easy on the blog for the rest of 2013. Kicking off Christmas week I am going to put up my list of the top ten books I read in 2013. This was hard, really hard.

There is a mix of YA, and adult on here. It was a good year for both genres. I've indicated which titles are adult. Each of the books link to my review (if posted).

Katherine Longshore brings Anne Boleyn to life effortlessly. Her voice stayed in my head long after I had finished the novel, and Katherine's brilliant writing only improves with each novel. She creates a sympathetic, yet still driven portrait of the doomed queen. Fans of Anne Boleyn will relish this one, and newcomers to the Tudor court will find much to enjoy as well. It's sexy, scandalous, and heart pulling.

A mind warp at it's finest. You'll feel like you're in one of Cordova's 'night films yourself as you question everything. This novel dares to question belief, perception, and reality. Does believing in something make it reality? It's thought provoking ending will make you want to read the novel again.

Victoria Schwab blurs the lines between good, evil and creates something in between. Vicious wants to make you question mortality, and your definition of the 'anti-hero'. Needless to say, she succeeds. Vicious is not only thrilling, taunt, and addictive, but it's brilliantly written. I, personally, was left wanting to beg her for more. You won't soon forget Victor or Eli after reading this one.

An intoxicating duology that ends with a fantastic finale. Bethany has created a world that is rich, characters that will immediately grab you, and has ended the series in the most fitting way. It's decadent, dangerous, and yet there is a little light of hope, which is exactly the message of her story. Araby grows leaps and bounds and remains one of my favourite female protagonists.

After finishing Tampa I felt two things - shock and disbelief. A provocative, controversial novel whose main character, Celeste, is someone you will never forget. Alissa takes what could have been a disaster, and creates something thought provoking, and brilliantly written. It made me want to discuss it with everyone, but it also made me want to warn them (and I think that's exactly what Alissa was going for).

** Tampa is REALLY adult. It is not intended for the younger readers**

Another debut novelist who impressed me with her writing. The world building is fantastic, and Paige is a character I am going to love seeing evolve and change throughout the novel. An impressive set up to what appears to be an amazing series. If you're looking for the next series to get obsessed with, this just might be it.

7 Cress by Marissa Meyer

I don't want to say to much, as this one is not on shelves yet. I will say that I fell in love with Cress (both the book and the character). Marissa Meyer's third novel has set up what is going to be one spectacular finale. The writing is just as engaging as the previous novels, and the plot is tight. This is a series where you can tell the author has planned, and plotted and is weaving everything together. I am so excited to watch everyone fall in love with Cress once it's released, she's truly wonderful.

Willem may just be my favourite male voice. He's exactly what I imagined while reading Just One Day, except even more so. He's just as swoony, just as complicated, and just as infuriating as you would anticipate after reading Allyson's story. This novel completes her story in a way that you won't be able to imagine one without the other. They are two sides of the same coin, and Gayle's writing shines as she brings Willem to life.

I loved Born Wicked. It was everything I wanted out of a witch novel. Star Cursed only improved on an already fantastic story. Jessica Spotswood's writing is impressive, and her characters are rich. The stage is set for the installment to this series, and the stakes just keep getting higher. A heart ripping ending, mixed with delightful characters, made this one an easy choice for this life. If you haven't checked out this series - do it immediately.

I cried my way through a large portion of this novel. Leonard Peacock's head is not a pleasant place to be, but there is no denying that Leonard's story MUST be told. Matthew Quick creates sympathy in a character who, at first, may seem undeserving. As you unravel Leonard's secret you quickly come to feel his pain. Matthew Quick has creates a timeless story that will crush your heart, and yet give you a little ray of hope as well.

Any of these titles make your top ten this year? Will you be adding any to your reading list in 2014? Let me know in the comments (link me your top ten if you've posted yours!).

Best of 2013.... so far

Hard to believe it's already 6 months until 2013. It's officially the half way point to the end of the year and time to check in and see what the best books I've read this year... so far at least. I've linked to my reviews if you want to know more about what I thought of each of these novels (or have indicated when a review is forthcoming in cases where reviews are not yet posted).

The top 10 in no particular order...

1 Tarnish by Katherine Longshore
A book that reads more like an autobiography than fiction. Anne Boleyn's voice leaps off the page, and creates one of the best characters I've read this year. A different approach as this novel focuses on her life rather than her untimely death.
2 Dance of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin
Lush descriptions, hot romance, and flaw characters come together to create one of my favourite of the year. A perfect ending to Araby's story that leaves you with just enough light in the darkness to say goodbye to these characters who are all too easy to become attached to.
3 Night Film by Marisha Pessl
Hands down one of the most well written novels I've read. The mystery of Ashley Cordova's death will haunt you, as will Stanislas Cordova himself. The question 'Who is Cordova' haunted me as much as it plagues our main character. This novel is sovereign, deadly and almost perfect. *review to come in the Autumn*
4 Golden Boy by Abigail Tarttelin
A novel that is beautiful and heart wrenching. It questions gender, and it's relevance to who we are. It's characters are ones that you'll remember long after you've finished this brilliant debut novel. Wonderfully written, and executed, this novel is one I urge everyone to pick it. It surprised me in the best possible way.
5 Star Cursed by Jessica Spotswood
Jessica Spotswood delivered a sequel that more that lives up to the first installment of the series. Filled with sibling rivalry, magic, romance, and ending in a heart crushing climax that will leave you breathless for the final novel. It's avoids the normal hindrances found in sequels and delivers something magical.
6 Before I Go To Sleep by S.J Watson
Thrilling, scary and disjointing. A novel told from the perspective of a character who is the definition of an unreliable narrator. SJ Watson has taken an already alarming premise and made it as sinister as possible. A novel that doesn't let go until all the secrets have been unraveled in the shocking ending.
7 Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare
An emotional ending to a trilogy that may just be superior to the author's Mortal Instruments. Saying goodbye to beloved characters is never easy but this ending provides everything I could have wanted. Closure, emotional payoff, and brilliant connecting between the two already interconnected series.
8 Reboot by Amy Tintera
A novel that surprised me with how much I fell in love with it. It's a fascinating look at what makes us human. Sweet romance, mixed with incredible action scenes, it's a novel that is as dark as it is beautiful. If this one flew under your radar, be sure to pick it up. It'll surprise you.
9 The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
A novel filled with brilliant world building. Paige's world is complex, and so fully fleshed out that my excitement over what is to come is almost as great as my love for the first installment to this series. A captivating character in Paige, and some intriguing plot developments make me think this is a series, and writer, to watch. *review to come in the August*
10 Game by Barry Lyga
The follow up to I Hunt Killers is everything it's predecessor was, and more. Jazz remains as chilling as he is charming. The stakes are as high as ever, and Barry Lyga's twisted story unfolds at a perfect pace, making the novel impossible to put down.
I can't wait to see which of these will make it to the final list of top ten books of the year come the end of December. What is the best book you've read so far this year? Let me know in the comments.

Best of 2011 so far....

We are officially half way done 2011. I thought I would share a list of my ten favourite reads so far. I am going to do the same at the end of the year, and in early 2012 do a favourite reads of 2011....it'll be interesting to see how many of these make that final list.

These are are in no particular order. The release date wasn't looked at for this. I simply looked at the 50 books on my read list and selected from there.

1. City of Fallen Angels (Mortal Instruments #4) by Cassandra Clare

This is one of my favourit series. I love Cassandra Clare's writing style and this novel set up the next 2 in the series perfectly. Read my review here.

2. The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter

This is Aimee's debut novel. I was sucked into this world she has created. Henry made me fall in love, and Kate has earned a place on my awesome female protaganist list. See the review here.

3. Wither by Lauren DeStefano

An eerie dystopian future that seemed scarily possible. The dynamic between the characters, and the writing itself are all stand outs. Read the review here.

4. Die For Me by Amy Plum

A unique paranormal aspect, a swoon worthy guy, and one of the more smart heroines in YA made this a favourite of mine. Read the review here.

5. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

So much of this plot is super secret. It really would spoil it to give anything away. Simply put - Mara is awesome, Noah Shaw is the ultimate book crush, and the end twist floored me. I am so glad Mara's story is just getting started. Review to come in September..as I said, it's super secret!

6. Forbidden by Tabithia Suzuma

This story grabbed my heart, held on and didn't let go. It left me in tears, and is one of the most beautifully written novels I've read. Read my review here.

7. Divergent by Veronia Roth

The action, the romance, and the world Veronica has created all suck you in. I am so glad that this is just the beginning for Tris and the sexy and dangerous Four. Read my full review here.

8. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

The cutest, most sigh inducing novel I've read so far this year. Stephanie captures that "Does he like me?" deliema perfectly. Plus it has Etienne St Clair. Read the review here.

9. Stolen by Lucy Christopher

My first review. I still haven't shaken this book. It stays with you and haunts you. It's beautifully written and the landscape is so perfectly described that it almost becomes a character itself. Read the review here.

10. Delirium by Lauren Oliver

I never thought I would be greateful to the guys who broke my heart...until I read this book. It made me so happy I could experience love in all it's forms..a message I still haven't forgotten. Read the review here.

The Iron Fey series came close to making the list but I couldn't just pick ONE of them to put on here.

I have read some amazing books so far this year and am looking forward to the ones to come. I can't believe this year is half over already!
