Celebrating International Women's Day

Happy International Women's Day, everyone! I thought I would celebrate by linking to a post I did before highlighting some of my favourite female characters and adding some that I can not believe I left off!

First... go check out my previous post! I am amazed at how accurate that list still is for me. Amy Elliott Dunne, Vanessa Ives, Liv Moore! All of the ones on my previous list still resonate for me and are worthy of celebration. 

Now, here are a few more that I should have highlighted last time as well: 

Buffy (from Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

She was one of the first female characters that really resonated with me. She was small but mighty. She took the trope of someone (or something) stalking the pretty blonde down an alley and turned it on its head. She was one of teen me's heroes and she is a character who still means a lot to me.

Christina Yang (from Grey's Anatomy) 

Christina Yang was brilliant, driven, and unapologetic about it. She also happened to be a really great friend. She didn't let anything (or anyone) stand in the way of what she wanted and refused to diminish her greatness for others. 

Hermoine Granger (from the Harry Potter series)

Hermoine is the type of character who is proud of who she is. She is book smart, a loyal friend, and works hard for her success. She is a character that much younger me would have looked up to and that current me is happy to introduce my nieces to. 

I hope to add Brie Larson's Captain Marvel to the list. I'll be celebrating International Women's Day by going to see Captain Marvel (which I think is entirely fitting).

New To My Book Closet

Fairest happened to be out in my bookstore early so I snagged a copy. Won't be reading it quite yet, but VERY soon.

I also picked up a copy of Gone Girl on DVD and it included a fun extra - an Amazing Amy novel. Those who have read the book/seen the movie will know why this is a big deal.

Faves of 2014 (Non Bookish)

If you've visited the blog before you've certainly realized that it is not only books that I fangirl over. TV, movies, and sometimes music can quickly become obsessions.

I thought it might be fun to share some of my favourite non bookish things from 2014 before the year ends.

TV

Breaking Bad

I binged watched this last Dec/Jan during a holiday marathon. It quickly became one of my favourite shows. Not just of the year, but ever. Walter White and Jesse Pinkman are two characters you will never forget and the question of what happens after still haunts me. Without giving spoilers...you want this one character, in particular, to be okay. You want to think that they found their happiness after the events. The idea that they might not have...soul crushing. This show is insanely well written, even more well acted, and all consuming. Trust the hype, and just watch it already if you haven't.

The Affair

The he said/she said storytelling. The subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, differences in events. The brilliant acting. The amazing writing. Take your pick as there are plenty of reasons this show should already be on your radar.

The show plays with perception and our recollection of events. It asks how much of what we remember is based on how we see ourselves and others instead of on actual facts. The person you love for example will always look better to you than they do to themselves. Are our views of someone accurate? Is it something we're projecting onto them? All of this is tackled against a tightly woven plot that keeps unraveling as the story continues to spiral. The main four characters (Joshua Jackson, Ruth Wilson, Dominic West, and Maura Tierney) are electric and the chemistry between them all is palpable. You'll want to watch them connect with each other, destroy each other, and implode over and over.

Penny Dreadful

Eva Green. Those two words are enough to make watching Penny Dreadful a must. She delivers one of the best performances on television this year. I read somewhere that someone said nobody acted harder in 2014, on television, than Eva Green. I 1000% agree with this sentiment. The later half of the season in particular allows her some great material to work with. It stuns me that she hasn't received any nominations as of yet (hopefully an Emmy is in her future).

The fact that the rest of the cast is also very good, and that the show is well written only adds to it's allure. The show itself looks beautiful and the storyline is captivating. Harry Treadaway deserves a special mention for his role as Victor Frankenstein as well. He makes the iconic character his own, and provides something extra to his storylines as a result.

How To Get Away With Murder

The twisty, incredibly fun hit of the fall season also happens to have some of the most brilliant performances. Viola Davis literally and figuratively strips away the layers she hides behind in one stand out moment. Jack Falahee slays as the self destructive Connor Walsh. Alfred Enoch plays an audience stand in of sorts, and does it fantastically. His "WTF" expressions, and puppy like demeanor only add to his charm. The best thing about this show however is that after it's stunning first half of the season it can, pretty much, go anywhere. The possibilities have me excited and may just determine if this show has staying power.

MOVIE

Gone Girl

The book to movie adaptation of 2014 for me. Rosamund Pike's flawless performance as Amy Dunne steals the movie. Once the mysteries behind her character are revealed Rosamund gets her chance to showcase what she can do, and the effect is breathtaking. Too many details would spoil the movie, but her performance left me with goosebumps.The movie itself is a faithful, well done, impeccably acted, adaptation of one of my favourite novels and I left the theatre extremely pleased.

Jacke Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler

Chilling, creepy, perfection. Jake Gyllenhaal has be praised for his acting talents numerous times (Brokeback Mountain, anyone?) but his performance as Lou Bloom is beyond words. His transformation is nothing short of awe inspiring. He both repulses and fascinates you as a supremely driven crime scene journalist who will stop at nothing to get ahead in his career.

Boyhood

A movie that is both a look at growing up and the journey that takes us from childhood to the cusp of adulthood and a nostalgic time capsule. The amount of time, and planning that went into creating this story that spanned 12 years is inspiring. It's uplifting, bittersweet, and shows just how similar everyone's experiences really are.

MUSIC

Taylor Swift's 1989

Only one CD mattered to me this year (yes, this makes me lame, whatever) and it was this one. It has pretty much been on repeat since it's release and I am obsessed with Blank Space, and Wildest Dreams. OBSESSED.

This website has quickly become a favourite of mine. There are so many cute, and amazing things to buy. If you're part of a fandom, it's basically got you covered. You'll spend way too much time browsing but you'll undoubtedly leave it pining for some items, and with less money! It's going to be something I continue to use in 2015, especially for gifts for people.

First chapter of Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard (goodreads)

I've been obsessed with Red Queen since I first heard about it. It's subsequent cover reveal only increased my excitement. The first chapter was recently release and it is basically everything I hoped it would be. It sets up the characters, and their world perfectly. There is plenty of action, and lots to make you want to keep reading. I need the rest of this book, immediately. MTV.com has the cover available if you wish to check it out.

Gone Girl signed copy (goodreads)

So I won a contest. A pretty amazing one actually. That squeal inducing image above is a signed copy of one of my favourite books. It's signed by the author, and the cast of the movie (which I LOVED). Still pinching myself that I won it. Needless to say, this one won't be read or lent out to anyone.

Cover of Joy Preble's Finding Paris (Goodreads)

I love every single thing about this cover. Everything. I need this book in my life as soon as possible. The synopsis sounds amazing, and this cover just cemented my book love.

Cover of Joyride by Anna Banks (Goodreads)

This is such a fun cover. It's sweet and really fits the synopsis of the book. Anything described as Bonnie and Clyde meets Pretty In Pink will immediately pique my interest, so this is another one of those books that I am very excited to get my hands. It sounds like it'll be a fun read, and one that has the potential to be super adorable.

Victoria Schwab's New Series

Let the flailing begin because this series sounds AMAZING! The first book in the series is called Monster, and it's being called (by Victoria) Sin City + Romeo and Juliet + monsters. If that doesn't make you immediately want to read it, check out the amazing synopsis...

Monster tells the story of a teen boy and girl who never should have met, since their fathers are rival leaders of a divided city where violence breeds literal monsters. Conspiracies and betrayals send the teens on the run for their lives, but together, they could become each other's worst nightmare.

Given the fact that Victoria's novels are always amazing, I have REALLY high hopes for this one. I NEED IT.

I ADORE these covers. I really do love the second book's cover. The blue colouring of her dress, and the dagger now taking a more prominent spot on the cover. I have been hearing amazing things about the book itself, and I cannot wait to read it.

TV/MOVIE

Gone Girl movie

It's finally here! You can go see Gone Girl at your local cinema now! If you devoured the book I am happy to report that you will love this movie. It's a faithful, incredible adaptation that is filled with amazing performances. Rosamund Pike is stunning as Amy. Ben Affleck was perfectly cast as Nick. The secondary cast was just as delightful, in particular Neil Patrick Harris as Desi Collins. I intend to see it again before it leaves theaters, and urge you to do the same.

Locked by Parker Witter (goodreads)

This enovella actually ties into Rebecca Serle's upcoming Famous In Love. The movie being made in Famous In Love is an adaptation of this book. Rebecca (and her publishing team) decide to offer up the 'book within a book' for fans to read, and I am thrilled. I have already purchased the ebook only novella and cannot wait to devour it. It sounds different than Rebecca's normal writing, but I am excited to see what she does with something that is not contemporary.

If you've read Famous In Love you'll want to grab this one immediately and for those who haven't met Paige, Jordan and Rainer yet, just trust me when I say you'll be rushing to purchase this right after.

The Gone Girl promotional team has released new adverts for the upcoming thriller....

This movie's promotional team is pure genius. They've made this movie into an event. They have released everything in a very controlled, planned manner that teases and tantalizes. I need this movie in my life, immediately. I am hoping to see it as soon as possible.

How To Get Away With Murder Pilot Episode 

Did you catch the premiere? Insane doesn't even begin to describe this show. It's going to be one of those shows that has a ton of buzz on social media because of the twists and reveals that are happening. If you missed the first episode, catch up before the second because it's the show everyone will be talking about.

Cover of Tear You Apart by Sarah Cross

Kill Me Softly was one of my favourites the year that I read it. It really surprised me. I loved the world Sarah Cross built, and wanted more of the 'Snow White' story in particular. This expands the story of one of the characters we met in Kill Me Softly, and I am very much looking forward to owning this! The cover is also fantastic and matches the Kill Me Softly one perfectly.

TV/MOVIE

Gone Girl's amazing promo campaign

These amazing promo posters were to advertise the new trailer that was released on July 7th. These made their way online on July 5 which fans of the book know is Nick and Amy's wedding/anniversary date (and the date Amy goes missing). A fantastic marketing touch that I especially liked.

The trailer itself is amazing. I, personally, think it's even better than the first trailer. It's certainly chill inducing. I pretty much need it to be October already so I can see this movie. Ben Affleck is perfectly cast as Nick

Favourite Books Since I've Started Blogging

I was recently asked about my favourite books. The books I would make everyone read if given the chance. The books that stayed with me years after I've finished reading them (or will stay with me).

Since I am out of town, I figured this would be a perfect chance to create a list of those titles (at least so far). I am keeping it to ones that I have reviewed on the blog. They'll all link to my review if you wish to check them out.

1 Stolen by Lucy Christopher

My first review, and I still love this one more than words can express. It's literally become a joke with the ladies of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Book Club because I mention it so often during our chats. Incredibly written, emotionally draining, and it's a book that plays with your head. In the most beautiful way possible, of course. This one is making it's way to the big screen with Ryan Kwanten as Ty.

2 Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Jodi Lynn Anderson's beautiful writing reduced me to tears as Tiger Lily ended. This retelling of Peter Pan not only feels fresh and different, but is one of my favourite adaptations of all time. An unforgettable story about the girl with the crow feather in her hair, and the lost boy she fell in love with. It gets bonus points for being narrated by everyone's favourite pixie.

3 Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

One of the best twists, EVER. I didn't see it coming, and (for me) it was brilliantly executed. Gillian Flynn's sharp, smart writing combined with a wrenching story of a couple falling in, and out of love serves to add a depth to this anything but typical mystery.

4 Tarnish by Katherine Longshore

Pretty sure Katherine's next book Brazen will be added to the list (I am halfway through and it's beautiful) but it's her portrayal of Anne Boleyn that stunned me. A novel that focuses on Anne's life, rather than her death. It shows that everyone deserves, and should fight for, their voice to be heard. A surprisingly uplifting and hopeful message that adds a bitter-sweetness to Anne's fate.

5 Vicious by V.E. Schwab

A deliciously dark look at what it means to be a hero, and villain. Unforgettable characters combined with Victoria's brilliant writing, and a rich, complex plot to create what is basically a perfect book. I ache to go back to this world and these characters. This one surprised me in the best way possible, and made me a Victoria Schwab fan for life. Apparently this one is also on it's way to the big screen. #DaneDehaanForVictorVale

6 Anna and the French Kiss/Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

Cute and fluffy is what most people probably think when they read the titles for these books. WRONG. They are adorable, but they are also filled with humour, heart, and a realness that seeps from the pages. The characters are so completely developed they feel like friends, and it quickly became one that I want to read over and over again. Both of them. There are plenty of swoon worthy passages throughout the novel. The stand out in both is Stephanie's attention to the little details that go into a romance. The inside jokes, the little gestures, and the moments that make everything stop. She captures that falling in love moment effortlessly.

7 Just One Day/Just One Year by Gayle Forman

A duology that when combined tell the romantic, and engrossing story of two people's journey to each other. Often romance is about the couple, but Gayle shines a light on the two individuals inside that couple. We get to know them each so well, and this is a case where each novel is dependent on the other. Allyson's story isn't complete without Willem's and vice versa. It's the kind of novel that inspires wanderlust, and might just inspire you to take a few chances.

8 We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

The less I say about this one the better. E Lockhart's gorgeous writing will pull you into the dreamy, summer vibe, but the mystery will keep you burning through the pages. Read it. Lie about it. Just make sure you experience it unspoiled as it's one that is meant to be experienced along with the characters.

9 Love Letters To the Dead by Ava Dellaira

A novel that is both heartbreaking and healing. It's letter style narration was done impressively well, and the emotions and character development impressive for this style as well. Ava's work reads gut-wrenchingly real that it feels like you're reading someone's personal letters at times, rather than a work of fiction. The celebrity angle works for the character and the story in a charming way. They become characters themselves. This was another surprise for me, but I was happy to fall under it's spell.

10 Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson

I hugged this book when I was done. It's that adorable, and fun. It's one of those books that makes you feel good. The journey you take with the characters comes complete with a musical playlist which only adds to it's charm. The characters, the writing, and the depth this novel has is wonderful. It's one to pick up this summer and enjoy by the beach.

Cover of Diamonds In The Rough by Michelle Madow

I ended up really liking The Secret Diamond Sisters and I am very excited to get my hands on this sequel. I love the cover.  It's totally fun and captures both the scandalous and sexy qualities of the novel.

TV

Bates Motel

Three episodes away from the end of season 2 and I am HOOKED. Freddie Highmore is doing amazing things with the complexity of Norman Bates. Vera Farmiga adds layers to Norma that I didn't think would be there. The show, and the cast, are only getting better with each episode. I am both anticipating and dreading the finale. They normally have a killer twist/cliffhanger, but the wait for season three is going to be excruciating. 

OTHER

Trailer for Gone Girl 

Gone Girl is one of the top books I've read since I've started blogging. The debate over the ending aside, the twist in this book is one of the single best twists I've EVER read. Ben Affleck (whom I didn't like for Nick when he was first cast) really surprised me in the trailer. The scene where he smiles while getting his picture taken next to Amy's missing poster? That IS Nick. It's a solid trailer, and shows promise as I can already pick up a few things from the book that I hoped would make it into the movie.

Trailer for If I Stay

The second they started playing Say Something I started crying. It's beautiful, and perfect. It already has me feeling the emotions I had while reading the book. Adam's line "I'm still here and I'm crazy in love with you. Please...stay'. Ugly crying right there. I have a feeling I'll be a mess while watching this one in theatres.

Some amazing things in my mailbox this week. First up, Penguin Canada delightfully made my week awesome by sending me a copy of The Merciless to review! The back of the ARC is my FAVOURITE! The whole "Forgive us, Father, for we have sinned" is chilling and fits with the story. I am looking forward to diving into this soon.

The Merciless by Danielle Vega (goodreads)

I also got a finished copy of Red Rising from Random House Canada. I've been hearing amazing things about this title, and I am excited to check it out for myself. I also picked up a copy of Entertainment Weekly this week, due to the chilling (yet beautiful) cover for Gone Girl! I LOVE this cover. SO MUCH. It's perfect. That is Nick and Amy. I am excited to see this brought to life. I am less excited about the changes, but hopefully since the author is writing the screen play, it works.

Weekly Obsessions

Here are my obsessions this week. They are movie/TV heavy because it's awards season!

MOVIE/TV

Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are on Sunday! I love awards season, and the Golden Globes kick off the countdown to the Oscars.

I have a few favourites that I will be crossing my fingers for on Sunday. I want Jared Leto to take home the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. His performance was brilliant. TV wise I am hoping Aaron Paul wins for his role in Breaking Bad. Bryan Cranston certainly deserves to win for playing Walter White (Breaking Bad again) so convincingly. I would be okay with Liev Schreiber winning for his role in Ray Donovan, but I think Bryan Cranston deserves it more. I also think Jennifer Lawrence might be adding another trophy to her collection.

Frozen

I finally saw Frozen. It's amazing. Disney movies have always been a favourite of mine, and this one is no exception. There are plenty of great moments that I loved in it. The fact that it focuses on the relationship between Elsa and Anna rather than romance made me very happy. It's got some great music (Idina Menzel's Let It Go is amazing), and a rather sweet message to it. I can't wait to own it and watch it again.

Gone Girl Entertainment Weekly Cover

I devoured Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and was extremely excited when the movie was announced. Entertainment Weekly's latest cover offers a first glimpse at the direction David Fincher is taking, and to see Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as Nick and Amy.

It's creepy and SO fitting to the story. It gives me hope that David Fincher is going to do this right. I am a little concerned about the 'changes' made to the story, but Gillian Flynn is writing the script. This is her novel, and I trust her to do something wonderful with the script. The article has sold me on Rosamund Pike. She gets Amy, and even Ben Affleck seems a great choice for Nick. SO EXCITED FOR THIS.

Night Film Trailer

So, Night Film is one of my favourite reads of 2013 (so far anyways) and they just released the trailer for it. Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive, so it can be found on their website. It's creepy, and intense...exactly like the book. #SovereignDeadlyPerfect.

DYING! LOVE! LOVE! I love fairytales, and this cover is PERFECTION. It matches the other amazing covers in this series, and *bounces* it's Rapunzel! We also got a synopsis, and WHY DO I NOT HAVE THIS BOOK YET!

2014 Books

I am working on an end of the year thing that is going to be AMAZING! I can't wait to share. It's going to focus on the 2014 titles I am most excited for, and I've already started getting things in order.

MOVIE/TV

Gone Girl movie casting

Amy has been cast! Rosamund Pike will star opposite Ben Affleck in what should be a pretty good movie. I am cautiously optimistic about the casting so far. There are a few other roles I can't wait to see who gets cast for (mainly Nick's sister) and am looking forward to the first trailer/stills/etc.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie

I am loving all the footage, and details that have been released so far. We are not less than a month to release and I can't wait to see it. I am sad that it appears my city is not doing midnight showings.

The Killing

This season of The Killing is my favourite of the three so far. I am loving Linden and Holder so much, and them together is even better. Holder makes me chuckle almost every episode. SO FUNNY. The last episode  had some of the best performances and Peter Sarsgaard gave me chills. He was so good in that episode, especially those final minutes.

If you missed the announcement this week some fellow bloggers and I have started an 'online' bookclub of sorts. I can't wait to get started with our first book which is Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Expect some fun discussions, hopefully some author input and perhaps movie watching.

MOVIE

Gone Girl Movie news

 According to Deadline Ben Affleck is in talks to play Nick in the movie adaptation of Gone Girl. I loved Gone Girl. It's twisty, dark, and intense. The movie is going to depend on the casting. I am withholding judgement until I see who they cast as Amy. Is Ben my first choice? NOT AT ALL. Do I think he'll do any okay job? We'll see. Either way I am excited that casting is happening and that the movie is moving forward.

Once Upon A Time Tea

If you've visited the blog before you are aware of my Once Upon A Time obsession. I stumbled across a website that offers Once Upon A Time inspired teas. These teas are inspired by the characters and all of them sound amazing. Henry's hot coco blend sounds especially awesome. The cute tins are making me want to buy ALL THE TEA. I may have to include some of these on my Christmas wishlist.

I have resisted getting an e-reader for so long. I much prefer to read the actual book. I pretty much relented due to having to read eARCs on my computer (very uncomfortable). Also, with all these novellas that are only being released in electronic format, it gave me the perfect excuse to jump in. I so far love it, but can't see myself giving up purchasing physical copies.

My Top Ten Books of 2012

The end of 2012 is just around the corner, and with that comes a bunch of "Best" list. I offer my own best list today. The top ten books I read in 2012.

These are in no particular order, because asking me to select my favourite from this list would really be torture. It was hard enough to keep this list to ten choices.

1. The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Steamy, sexy, and filled with Noah Shaw deliciousness. A creepy and brilliant look at a potential descent into madness. Wonderfully written with humour, scares, and STEAMY romance. 

My love affair with this series is well known. I adore Mara, Noah, and of course, the amazing Michelle for writing them.

2. Just One Day by Gayle Forman

 Yes I am teasing, but Oh My Swoon! Willem and Allyson's story had me feeling every emotion, and left me aching for more. This is easily 2013's MUST READ and more than meets expectations.

The beautiful writing, the connection I felt to Allyson, and the utter romance of this fantastic contemporary left me wanting to read Just One Year...immediately.

3. Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson

One of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. It made my heart hurt, and yet was filled with so much wonder. 

Getting to know the girl with the crow feather and her Peter was one of the highlights of my reading year, made all the more poignant because my love for this novel caught me by surprise. 

4. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

If I were to choose one word to describe Gone Girl that word would be twisted. Stunning reveals, an inciting game, and an uncomfortable look at falling out of love (just in the most extremely twisted way).  

Flawed characters that seem disturbingly real, and writing that makes you fly through the pages faster that you are capable of turning them. This one will keep you up late into the night, and leave you gasping at it's sad, yet unavoidable, ending.  

5.  Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin

A darkly decadent read where even the air you breath can kill you. Swoon worthy guys, a flawed heroine, and the seductive Debauchery Club are all stand outs in this amazingly written novel.

The dual notion of glitz and glamour back dropped against a stark decimated city make for a compelling dynamic. I fell for this one in chapter one, and couldn't stop reading.

6. Gilt by Katherine Longshore

Tudor court glamour meets high school mean girls in this engrossing historical novel. Catherine Howard paid the ultimate price for her youthful mistakes. This portrayal paints her in a much different, and more realistic feeling light. This novel feels relevant because it shows friendships, and their complexity haven't changed over the years.

7 The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Magic meets realism in this heart grabbing novel. Blue, and her Raven Boys will work their way into your heart until you care deeply about each of them.

Maggie's writing is fantastic, but her characters draw you in and that is why it's on my list. 

8 Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Another must read when it comes out. I adored Cinder, but Scarlet surpassed all my expectations. Ruggedly swoon worthy Wolf grabbed my attention immediately, and  I adored the feisty Scarlet. The mixing of Cinder's story with Scarlet's journey is done flawlessly, and the fairytale elements I loved in Cinder are just as present in Scarlet. 

9 Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood

One of the best witch stories I've ever read. A mixture of romance, suspense, and a hint of the magical storm to come leaves you under this novel's spell.

The writing flows quickly, and the characters are captivating. The witchcraft mythology that is being built has be eager to learn more. With all of this going for it, it's the bond between the sister's that shines the most. A story of sisterly love, sacrifice, jealously, and perhaps betrayal. 

10 The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

This novel left me a crying mess on my couch by the end. I believe that this will make many lists this year, and it really is one of the best of the year.

Hazel and Augustus' story stays with you long after you've finished. With humour, heart, and tears it's an emotional reminder to love as deeply as possible, and to live each second to the fullest

I do have a few others that I REALLY enjoyed this year as well, and this list was seriously torture to whittle down, but those are the ones that I think impacted me the most. What novels made your Best List this year? Let me know in the comments.

Books I Want Made Into A Movie (or TV Show)....

I made a list of these awhile ago. That list still applies, however I've read some amazing books lately. Books that I would LOVE to see turned into a movie. Some of my previous choices have even made it onto this list again (Let’s consider those books that MUST be turned into a movie).

Here are the 10 books I would want to see made into a movie (or TV show) right now…..

1 The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein series by Kenneth Oppel

A dark, adventure filled plot that would translate into an action packed movie. The characters and the entire plot gave me the same feeling as when I read Harry Potter - almost like it was made to be turned into a movie.

2 The Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin

This series has quickly become one of my favourites. The insane twists would play out amazingly on screen. The steamy romance between Noah and Mara would require chemistry between the two actors to portray accurately, but I would love to see it come to life.

3 Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

With many twists and turns that would make an incredible movie. A tense look at a messed up relationship, Gone Girl would play out wonderfully with the right actors. Luckily this one is in the early stages of being adapted for the big screen, and I can't wait.

4 The Infernal Devices Series by Cassandra Clare

Now that The Mortal Instruments is on it's way to becoming a huge hit at the box office, I immediately thought this should become a movie. I would love to see Jem, Tessa and Will brought to life. I would love for the same director, team to be involved with this one as well. The historical aspect also makes it appealing for adaptation.

5 Immortal City by Scott Speer

While reading this book, I could see the potential for a TV show or movie. It read like it was made to be a CW show. The crime noir feel would translate really well. The glitz and glamour of Hollywood contrasted with the darker side of Los Angeles would also be striking on screen.

6 Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin

I would love to see the setting of this come to life. The Debauchery Club would be electric. The fashion, the scenery, and characters could be visually stunning if done the right way. It has the potential to be one of the most beautifully shot movies with the right director as well.

7 From What I Remember by Stacy Kramer

This reminded me a lot of those fun 80's teen romantic comedies. A teenaged spin on the popular Hangover movies, with a coming of age element dealing with saying goodbye to highschool. A fun cast of characters would also play out well on screen.

8 Cinder by Marissa Meyer

This has to be a movie. My request for this one? Joss Whedon as director. He would do wonderful things with this genre and these characters.

9 Black City by Elizabeth Richards

The world of Black City would look amazing on screen. The heavy political aspect of the novel would allow for lots of tension and action. The sensual nature of the Darklings, and Ash in particular would provide the romance element. My only request is Ezra Miller for Ash!

10 Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

This novel is begging to be turned into a movie. Romance, action, and shades of the X-Men series assures that this will be a hit with movie goers. I only hope that Tahereh's beautiful writing style comes across cinematically as well as it does in the novel.

Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Girl goes missing. Not exactly your typical fairytale romance.  Amy and Nick seemed to have a charmed life, right up until their fateful 5th year wedding anniversary. Amy goes missing and Nick’s actions make him seem suspicious. Part murder mystery, and part mind game, Gone Girl is an intense, and twisted novel that will leave you reeling.

Gone Girl is a book you don’t want to spoil for yourself. It’s also one of those books that is hard to talk about without giving anything way. It is an intense experience, made all the more rich by allowing the novel to unfold and letting the twists and turns of the story take you by surprise.

Gillian Flynn takes a magnifying glass to marriage (or even dating someone) and ended up causing me to squirm a little. She heightens everything, obviously, for dramatic purposes but the gritty truth is apparent underneath. Some of what haunts Nick and Amy’s relationship is a all to recognizable. Often people expect their partners to read their minds, and instinctively know what they want and need. Often this leads to anger, because our partner doesn’t know us as well as we think they did. People tend to put their best selves forward when initially getting together, and slowly fade into their true natures as time progresses. It shows how important communication and honesty are in a relationship. However, most of these are done without thinking. It reflected a disillusionment that sometimes accompanies falling out of love. Everything you loved about someone is now the thing that drives you crazy. She also highlights the good stuff though. The inside jokes, the bonds that are ever present, the realization that you really do know your partner if you think about it. All of that is shown as well. The ups and downs of a relationships are beautifully written. The extremes in which love can drive us are also shown with utter realism.

Gillian Flynn’s ability to make me switch my view point each chapter was brilliant. I was caught up in each version of the truth. There really are two sides to every story, and the narrator gets to put their own spin on it. This dual narration makes this even more evident and sifting through the motivations and truths starts to feel like being caught in a spider’s web. The narrators are also so vastly different that each voice is crystal clear.

Neither Nick or Amy are blameless or perfect for many things in the novel. Each is flawed, and messed up in their own way. Nick’s driving desire to be liked, and Amy’s spoiled tendencies are just the tip of the iceberg in the dysfunction that is this relationship. However, each of them captured my attention and I was instantly drawn into their story. They are complex, and human.

I also wanted to point out the delightful nod to Nancy Grace. The character was brilliantly catty and wonderful. It provided some humour in an otherwise tense plot.

There is so much else I would love to say but so much is a spoiler, so I will just say READ IT. Enjoy the ride, and relish each twisted, delicious, demented second of it.

A novel that is meant to be an experience, Gone Girl packs plenty of thrilling twists, and turns. Just when you think you know what happened to Amy (and to the relationship) another delicious twist is revealed. An unsettling, tragic, and yet perfectly fitting ending that ensures the characters, and the story, stay with you long after you’ve finished reading.

I can't believe I have not read this earlier. It is dark, twisty, and f#@cked up in the best ways. This novel is most likely making it on my "Top Reads of 2012" list that is coming in December. If you haven't read it - DO SO! Just be sure to not spoiler yourself ANYTHING. It's a book that you need to experience as things unfold.

On December 8th I will be leaving to head to Florida for a week holiday with my family. We are introducing my little nieces to the magical world of Disney. I am so excited for them to meet Cinderella especially. It's going to be a wonderful experience!

Christmas Holidays

As the end of the November comes near I start to get really excited about Christmas. I am WAY behind in shopping this year (blame Disney) and I am looking forward to getting some gifts out of the way soon. I love spending the holidays with my family and it really is one of my favourite times of the year.

Kissing Shakespeare is from the library and have heard good things about it. It sounds really cute. Gone Girl is borrowed from Meaghan from Feeling A Little Bookish. I am so beyond excited to read it. I have heard nothing but good things and that it is a super twisty read.
