Waiting On Wednesday .... Majesty

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick is Majesty by Katharine McGee

** Spoilers for American Royals**

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Is America ready for its first queen?

Power is intoxicating. Like first love, it can leave you breathless. Princess Beatrice was born with it. Princess Samantha was born with less. Some, like Nina Gonzalez, are pulled into it. And a few will claw their way in. Ahem, we're looking at you Daphne Deighton.

As America adjusts to the idea of a queen on the throne, Beatrice grapples with everything she lost when she gained the ultimate crown. Samantha is busy living up to her "party princess" persona...and maybe adding a party prince by her side. Nina is trying to avoid the palace--and Prince Jefferson--at all costs. And a dangerous secret threatens to undo all of Daphne's carefully laid "marry Prince Jefferson" plans.

A new reign has begun....
American Royals was such a fun read that I was immediately excited that there would be a sequel. The story leaves on a major cliffhanger so I am looking forward to continuing all of the amazing plot points.

This is pretty much frothy, soapy read that would make a perfect Netflix television show. It feels like beach reading but will help kick off the end of summer with a first of September release date. It'll be a perfect one to pair with Labour Day weekend.

Expected release date - September 1, 2020

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every weekend.

Another week in which this did not auto post!

BOOKS

cover by Majesty by Katharine McGee (goodreads)

I enjoyed American Royals when it came out last year. It, of course, leaves of on a cliffhanger so I have been excited to get my hands on the sequel.

The cover was just revealed and it is just as fun as the cover for the first book.

I think I like the colour scheme for this one more than the first though! It is bright and light in a way that the other one wasn't.

MOVIES/TV

Hollywood (Netflix)

We have a release date and poster art for Ryan Murphy's next Netflix series. It's based on Hollywood in the 1940's. Other than someone playing Rock Hudson I believe all the other characters are created for the show.

The post is amazing and I love that tagline. I cannot wait to see a trailer and I hope we might see some other well known celebrities of that time period worked into the story.

What are you obsessed with this week? Let me know in the comments.

Best of 2019 - Book Edition

As the year comes to a close it is once again time to reflect back on the books I read and highlight a few that I particularly enjoyed reading this year.

My reading suffered this year. I did not read nearly as many books as I hoped to. I am resolving to fix this in 2020. I did manage to read some pretty awesome books this year though.

Here are my top ten reads of this year (in no particular order). They each link to my review (where one has been written and posted) if you want to see exactly why I loved them.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

3 Stay Sexy and Don't Get Murdered by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark

4 Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

5 The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh

Transcend/Epoch by Jewel E Ann

Chase Darkness With Me by Billy Jensen

8 The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams

9 American Royals by Katharine McGee

10 A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

This list, obviously, includes books released this year and some that were not. My only criteria was that they had to be books I read this past year.

Do you agree with any of the books on list? Feel there is a book I missed this year that I should make a priority to read in 2019? Let me know in the comments.

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
What if America had a royal family?

When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne.

As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America's first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly feels stifling. Nobody cares about the spare except when she's breaking the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn't care much about anything, either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her. And then there's Samantha's twin, Prince Jefferson. If he'd been born a generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne, but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls are vying to capture his heart.
If there is one thing you should know about Katharine McGee's novels, it is that they feel like you are reading a season of one of your favourite CW television shows and American Royals is no exception. Its vivid and decadent world, the twist to USA history, and the addictive drama all add up to a novel that readers can easily visualize.

The world of the Washington family is one of privilege, power, and riches. It is this lush, and rich setting that adds something extra to the story. It makes the idea of America having a King feel all the more plausible. The celebrity like feel to the Washington's life is showcased has having both good and bad moments. They live in a gilded fishbowl and that kind of hyper surveillance and the expectations put on the characters is a huge part of the story being told.  It's fascinating to unravel how that sort of pressure would impact the family relationships and that is absolutely tackled within these pages.

The drama, as mentioned, is straight out of some of your favourite teen television dramas. It is heightened but in a way that only serves to make the storyline and characters more compelling. This is a larger than life setting and that stage requires equally high stakes and Katharine McGee delivers. The pacing of the reveals is so pitch perfect it makes this whirlwind story connect a little harder than I thought it would. She allows time for the major plot points to matter before the story races off again and that makes the reader feel a little more invested in how these events impact the characters we are spending time with.

The three Washington siblings are all so different from each other as are their relationships to one another. That dynamic was one of my favourite parts of the story and I hope we get to explore the sibling side of things a little more in future novels.

Beatrice is going to be the first Queen of America and heavy is the crown as they say. She is, naturally, having to deal with sexism and a bunch of people saying she can't do the job because she isn't a man. She feels the responsibility of becoming Queen deeply, and hears the voice of her detractors. It drives every single part of her to the point that her own needs and wants are a non factor. It is both impressive and crushing. You don't want this position that she was literally born into to control her life but the book makes the case that there is no way that it couldn't. Anything else was never in the cards for Beatrice.

Samantha is the more free spirited Washington sister. She likes to have fun, get into trouble, and is happy to drift along. She doesn't know what drives her yet. She has lived her whole life feeling like she was unimportant, just the spare. Everything from her security code name (Sparrow) to the way she is viewed and treated serves to remind her that she is secondary. Your heart breaks for her even as you see the freedoms she has that Beatrice does not.

Jefferson doesn't have a point of view in this novel and as a result I feel like I didn't really get to know him. He is a lot like his twin sister, Samantha, but also used to being viewed differently because he is a guy. He's her partner in crime and I wish we had gotten to see them together a little bit more. Jeff, if possible, has it even easier than Beatrice and Samantha because of the different expectations that are put on him because of his gender.

The other view points are the characters of Daphne and Nina. Two very different girls with ties to the Washington family. Daphne is driven and will be a divisive character for readers. Nina is probably the most relatable character in the book. She comes from a average home life and is swept up into the life of the royals because of her mother's job and the friendships that resulted from it. She is the outsider who isn't sure the life of scrutiny is for her.

Fans of Gossip Girl, anything royal, and frothy fun in book form will have a fantastic time devouring this. It has the perfect blend of romance, drama, and fast moving plot that ensures that readers will not be able to turn the pages fast enough.

Waiting On Wednesday ... American Royals

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick is American Royals by Katharine McGee

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
What if America had a royal family? If you can't get enough of Harry and Meghan or Kate and William, meet American princesses Beatrice and Samantha.

Two princesses vying for the ultimate crown.
Two girls vying for the prince's heart.
This is the story of the American royals.

When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne. Like most royal families, the Washingtons have an heir and a spare. A future monarch and a backup battery. Each child knows exactly what is expected of them. But these aren't just any royals. They're American. And their country was born of rebellion.

The duty. The intrigue. The Crown. New York Times bestselling author Katharine McGee imagines an alternate version of the modern world, one where the glittering age of monarchies has not yet faded--and where love is still powerful enough to change the course of history.
Show me a book about royalty and I will instantly want to read it. Katharine McGee's American Royals twists American history and provides the country with a royal family in the process. The idea is unique and filled with such potential that this is easily one of my top reads of 2019. The synopsis has only made me want to read it even more.

It's a long wait for this one! We will be able to enjoy it with a pumpkin spice latte which honestly seems like the perfect way to devour this one, but fall seems extremely far away as we head into spring.  Here's hoping ARCs of this one show up at Book Expo!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

A few fun things to share this week! I am also excited about spring finally being here. It's been nice to go out with a sweater instead of a winter jacket and the sunshine has been really nice!

BOOKS

American Royals by Katharine McGee (goodreads)

I was immediately intrigued by this book just from the deal announcement. It sounds like a perfect fit for anyone who is obsessed with royalty and the idea of 'what if'.

The deal announcement describes it as
A reimagining of modern-day America as a monarchy, the book tells the tale of the American royal family: the most famous family in the world, who play out their dramas on the greatest stage of all.
I look forward to hearing more about this as the fall 2019 release date gets closer.

OTHER

HappyHello Bookmarks (link)

I have raved about the bookmarks from this Etsy shop a bunch of times. I was so excited when I saw that some new ones had been added and immediately purchased the Call Me By Your Name set!

How cute are these?! They are perfect. I am (im)patiently waiting for my set to arrive in the mail.

The photo is taken from the Etsy shop and belongs to Vivi who is the owner. Please check out the shop. There are a ton of different fandoms represented and she even does amazing custom orders!

Quelque Chose Ice Cream With Macarons (link)

I stumbled across this new ice cream offering in downtown Ottawa. The place is called Quelque Chose and they are mainly a macaron place, but have added these delicious looking ice cream treats to their menu for the summer.

The S'more and Cotton Candy ones are a must try for me, but the rest of them look just as amazing. Check out their website, and if you live in the Ottawa area be sure to check them out this summer.

Pages - 448 pages

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
New York City as you’ve never seen it before. A thousand-story tower stretching into the sky. A glittering vision of the future, where anything is possible—if you want it enough.

Welcome to Manhattan, 2118.

A hundred years in the future, New York is a city of innovation and dreams. But people never change: everyone here wants something…and everyone has something to lose.

Leda Cole’s flawless exterior belies a secret addiction—to a drug she never should have tried and a boy she never should have touched.

Eris Dodd-Radson’s beautiful, carefree life falls to pieces when a heartbreaking betrayal tears her family apart.

Rylin Myers’s job on one of the highest floors sweeps her into a world—and a romance—she never imagined…but will her new life cost Rylin her old one?

Watt Bakradi is a tech genius with a secret: he knows everything about everyone. But when he’s hired to spy by an upper-floor girl, he finds himself caught up in a complicated web of lies.

And living above everyone else on the thousandth floor is Avery Fuller, the girl genetically designed to be perfect. The girl who seems to have it all—yet is tormented by the one thing she can never have.

Debut author Katharine McGee has created a breathtakingly original series filled with high-tech luxury and futuristic glamour, where the impossible feels just within reach. But in this world, the higher you go, the farther there is to fall….
It starts with a fall and a scream, and ends with the devastating truth and its consequences. The Thousandth Floor reminds me of champagne - light, bubbly, and oh so good. Its the type of novel that is tailor made to be read at the end of summer. It's sudsy, filled with juicy drama, and enough secrets to make even some of the Gossip Girl characters blush. It's everything the synopsis promises, delivered in a compulsively readable package.

Katharine McGee's crisp, clean writing allows the story to be the focus. It allows the incredible world that has been built to shine brightly. The 'futuristic' element felt realistic to how our technology would progress. There are certainly elements that feel fantastical, but they fit within the world that has been created, and are similar to adding a pop of colour to an otherwise black and white canvas. They are there to be eye catching while still complimenting the whole. This element is what provides the biggest splash with some of the inclusions being just as surprising as the secrets the characters hold.

A multiple point of view novel is complicated and often hard to pull off well. Each voice should feel distinct and capture the essence of the character. It is like a tower of blocks where removing one piece impacts the entire structure. It takes skill and planning. Katharine McGee not only creates distinct characters that resonate with the reader, but has intricately woven their stories together in a way that creates a stronger story. It adds to the increasing tension as we learn things before other characters do and can anticipate the consequences to come. If the entire series is this intricately plotted and executed I will be not only impressed, but a life long fan of anything Katharine McGee writes.

The characters are the heart of this novel. It is them that kept my interest, because this is not a new story. Each of the characters has something that haunts them. Its either something they cannot have, something they've lost, or something they need a little too much. There is desperation, shame, secrets, lies, and each of the character spirals as everything begins to unravel. This novel, for me, blended the plot driven focus with the characterization incredibly well to ensure that we cared about both the plot and the characters that it was happening to.

The tension coursing through this novel is like a vice grip. It is relentless and the tightening feeling only increases as the story progresses to its inevitable end. The story is like a chess game with Katharine McGee moving all the characters steadily into position with deliberate precision. The payoff is the pulse pounding, breath stealing final few chapters that leave you dizzy. It is perfectly executed and shows the amount of planning and plotting that went into this multiple point of view novel.

Fans of Gossip Girl will immediately devour this addictive read and beg for more. I predict that even non fans will fall under the spell of this decadent, delicious and satisfying read. The wait for the second novel is going to be excruciating but it'll give you time to pick your jaw up off the floor. End your summer with the residents of The Tower. I predict you'll love it.

It's no secret that I've been excited for this book. I love the futuristic Gossip Girl vibe that this seems to have and I am already excited to read it by the pool this summer (thanks to the ARC I was lucky to get at BEA). It seems to be a perfect read for the summer and comes out just in time for you to devour it before the end of summer.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOK

Cover of The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee (goodreads)

First go read this synopsis and tell me that this book isn't begging to be read with a glass of champagne (or some kind of frozen fruity alcohol beverage) by the pool? It is basically the reason sudsy summer reading is a thing.

Now, take a look at this STUNNING cover! It's incredibly pretty.

Obviously I can already see this being a show on the CW. It is pretty much a futuristic Gossip Girl and I am already excited to check out the inevitable TV show.

TV/MOVIE

The Space Between Us trailer

Watch this trailer and tell me that this wouldn't make an amazing YA novel. I am really sad it's not a YA novel because it would be something I would immediately devour.

This looks AMAZING! I am a sucker for the romance aspect of this. The guy is FROM A DIFFERENT PLANET! This just screams YA romance and I am absolutely going to see this opening night.

Me Before You

I was lucky enough to get to see an advance screening of this and loved it immensely. If you are a fan of the novel you absolutely need to go see it. A lot of the really big moments from the novel are captured perfectly, and the casting was flawless. Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke not only have chemistry together but both of them deliver pitch perfect performances as Will and Lou. You'll laugh, cry and immediately want to watch it again.

Guilt

I have been intrigued since I heard that this show was coming to Freeform. It's a murder mystery that has echoes of the Amanda Knox case in it's synopsis. This promotional art only has me more excited to check it out.

There is something really eye catching about the bloody footprints and it sounds like perfect twisty summer drama. It's too bad that Canada doesn't have Freeform, but I am hoping another network has picked it up for Canadian distribution or that it'll end up like Shadowhunters and be loaded into Netflix.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOK

Cover for The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee (goodreads)

I am unsure if this is the actual cover. I've seen it around the internet but nothing officially announced anywhere. Either way, I love this cover. It perfectly captures the synopsis and that splash of red catches your eye. This is one I am highly anticipating in 2017!

Cover of Unrivaled by Alyson Noel (goodreads)

There is something extremely eye catching about the gold dipped strawberry. The synopsis also sounds great. I hope this series is fun, sexy and as exciting as I am anticipating.

TV/MOVIE

The Royal We movie adapation

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that movie rights for The Royal We have been snapped up. Lauren Graham and Mae Witman are teaming up to produce and Lauren Graham will be writing the script. Mae Witman is in talks to star. This news has me so incredibly happy as I loved this book so much. I am hoping that the extra attention will make the Freddie centric companion novel more of a possibility.

OTHER

BEA and ALA 2016

This is about when my BEA excitement kicks in and I am obsessed with it for the next few months. I am so lucky to be attending both BEA and ALA this year. I have flights booked, hotels (mostly) reserved, and am just waiting to obtain my passes for each of the events. It'll be my first time going to ALA (and have been told that I will love it) so I am very excited. ALA is hosted in Orlando this year and I am so excited to spend a day at Disney World and have drinks with Kelly (from Kellyvision) and see a bunch of other bloggers. Getting to see everyone is my favourite part of events like this so let me know if you're attending either one!

Extremely small Weekly Obsessions post this week.

BOOKS

The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee (goodreads)

This caught my attention as it sounds like a futuristic Gossip Girl sort of. Here is the synopsis...
Set in 2118, the trilogy follows the scandalous lives of teens in Manhattan's new 1000-story skyscraper.
I am hoping for scandal, debauchery, and lots of kissing. This is quite far away as it is slated for a 2017 release but I am very excited to hear more as it gets closer.

MOVIE/TV

Famous In Love TV Show

Rebecca Serle just announced recently that Famous In Love is becoming a TV Show. Marlene King, who is part of the Pretty Little Liars creative team/writing team, is behind the show and Bella Throne has been cast as Paige. Deadline released the announcement and I cannot wait for more casting news! Here is hoping the pilot is fantastic and it gets a series pick up!
